On Saturday more than 5,500 cyclists participated in the 30th annual Pan-Mass challenge in America, a 192-mile charity bike-a-thon. To help the PMC’s on-call accident response team navigate to incident scenes efficiently, TomTom has donated portable navigation devices to the emergency workers.

The donation of TomTom devices to equip PMC emergency response vehicles is an extension of TomTom’s ongoing commitment to the PMC. For four years, TomTom has contributed to the challenge, both with a team of riders and through employee fundraising efforts. TomTom applauds the PMC’s continued successes in contributing to the Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute and hopes to participate in the PMC for years to come.

TomTom for iPhone gets closer

TomTom has demonstrated the world’s first dedicated in-car navigation solution for the iPhone. They also announced new car kit design specifically for Apple’s infamous gadget. The TomTom solution combines two new TomTom products to provide users with state of the art in-car navigation on their iPhone:

1 – The TomTom navigation application for iPhone
This is basically an Apple version of TomTom’s award-winning turn-by-turn navigation software, which includes IQ Routes and latest maps from Tele Atlas
2 – The TomTom car kit for iPhone
This is a specially developed car kit for secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, hands-free calling and in-car charging.

TomTom Launch Designer White Pearl GPS

TomTom have just announced a brand new design of the fantastic ONE IQ Routes edition. The White Pearl edition and its EasyPort folding mount have a matching pearlescent finish and are decorated with a subtle swirl pattern making a happy departure from the typical look and feel of a TomTom portable navigation device.

Based on the TomTom ONE IQ Routes™ edition, the White Pearl ensures that driving is safe and stress-free but also includes some brand new features : special Points of Interest such as, ‘Places to be seen’ and ‘Shop ‘til you drop’. Covering everything from restaurants, bars, cafes, coffee shops, cinemas and theatres to fashion and home furnishing stores – the White Pearl gives drivers the ability to explore new places. TomTom Navigator 7 now on sale

TomTom Navigator 7 was previously only available bundled with some high end mobile phones, but it is now on sale on a microSD card directly from TomTom. TomTom NAVIGATOR 7 works on mobile phones which operate on Windows Mobile 6.1. The microSD product comes with the latest detailed maps of Western Europe as well as all of the standard TomTom features, including MapShare, Help Me!, Route Choice and POIs. TomTom and Teleatlas Split Denied

TomTom and Teleatlas have been quick to deny the rumours that TomTom will be selling off TeleAtlas in order to meet loan payments. TomTom took a considerable financial gamble with the acquisition of mapmaker TeleAtlas following a bidding war with Garmin. TeleAtlas confirmed that there had been no discussion on a possible split and that the two companies were stronger as a result of their integration.

TomTom developing for the iPhone?

Rumours abound this week that TomTom is developing its own navigation software for the iPhone. The next generation of Apple’s infamous mobile phone is to feature a digital compass, which set gadgeteers on high alert that the GPS on the device was going to evolve. In a startling coincidence, TomTom has published a job listing suggesting that the company are at work on an application for the iPhone. The advert is for an IPhone Mac OS Developer, based in Amsterdam to develop “iPhone applications relating to navigation software”. You’ll notice that TomTom is not mentioned, so it could be any of the other navigation companies located in the city…no, we don’t know any either.

Fingers crossed that the big two will come together with something exciting in time for the next iPhone release. Watch this space.

TomTom supporting national family week

TomTom has joined forces with ‘Enjoy England’ to help families around the UK to save time and money, and reduce stress, as well as helping them to find new places to explore this summer.

According to new research five million people are considering a holiday at home this year. To help them out, TomTom is offering families the chance to download a completely free set of ‘Points of Interest’ (POIs) for their TomTom navigation device, focusing on venues and attractions around the country.

With more than 17,000 quality-assessed places of accommodation, plus 5,000+ attractions around England, families can enjoy their holidays without the worry of knowing where to take the children to keep them entertained, or where to find a great hotel or restaurant – and without the arguments associated with reading a map or asking for directions!
