I have had much difficulty in deciding what I want to do with my audio education. It seems that every week there is something new I discover or find out and want to dive into. I think back to why I started all of this in the first place and that was so I could always be close and involved with the music that I love to capture and create. Somewhere along the line from when I started to play instruments to the moment I am writing this, a span of 8 years, I have come to realize that being a musician is one of the greatest tools I have in my arsenal. Then I came to realize that your job title doesn’t make the man, it’s a good worth ethic, diverse and unique skills sets and quality output that really makes the best audio guys the best.

As I shadow engineers as an intern I have come to notice that so many guys sitting in front of computers only know how to do one thing. Granted, they can do that thing really well but there is no variety in their work, their job in general, or their life. There is so much talk by these older guys that the industry has gone down hill or failed or really isn’t there anymore but I see a booming industry with so much to gain. Of course our economy and the post-production industry took a poop but I believe that a lot of people, an older crowd, baby boomers specifically, see no opportunity in the greater-Detroit Post production scene because they do not posses a variety skills to aid in their search for work.

There is this feeling unease towards new technologies and though it’s hard to keep up with it in the first place, there is an unwillingness to comply with the advent of a new technology whether its ProTools or Spotify. It becomes really difficult for someone like myself who is raised on evolving technology to accept that new tech doesn’t have a place in your arsenal of tools. If an engineer or a producer makes it a point to have a multitude or skills and tools in their toolbox there should be very few jobs they should ever turn down. There is work out there it needs to be gotten. Being a jack of all trades and a master of those trades is the way to be.

Interview with Composer John Nixon

Podcast Interview Number 2 with Ron Rose CODA Composer John Nixon.

Chip Kipps Interview -Podcast-

Here it is the first podcast!!

https://ia801403.us.archive.org/28/items/ChipKippsInterview/TonyChipInterviewWITHMUSIC.mp3

Audio for DSLR

Tascam DR-60D MKII Recorder for DSLR Cameras

Gone are the days of bad, muffled, or blown out audio from your DSLR camera. Tascam has developed a new portable recorder made especially for DSLR cameras. The Tascam DR-60D recorder has a tripod mount and intergrades perfectly with almost any camera brand. The recorder has two XLR inputs that feeds into Tascams HDDA Mic Preamps with phantom power for condenser mics. The front panel has easily accessible controls for pre amp gain and other controls for easy quick adjustments. These are recorded at audiophile resolution with premium analog to digital converters that provides quality that outshines the camera. You can plug in other sources for 4 track recording as well. Dual recording enables a safety track of the audio at a lower level, so if an actor shouts a line the camera has a non distorted back-up copy. There is also a limiter and high and low pass filter to avoid over driving the tracks.

The DR-60 records broadcast wave files time stamped with the time of day to SD card media.

Camera output allows the DR60D to be synchronized with your camera. Attenuated down to mic level to avoid distortion. The camera also has a slate function that records a tone for perfect sync.

This is the next generation of 4-track solid state recording.

Beachtek DXA-SLR for DLSR Cameras

Beachtek a proven brand for camera audio has recently come out with its DXA-SLR Pro. Tripod mountable.

There are high/low switches for both inputs depending on mic sensitivity.

This also features an automatic gain control disable function that sends a 20khz tone to the left channel tricking the camera into disabling the AGC.
