The first time this month that we went out on the Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari, was a very calm day but so foggy. After travelling out for an hour the fog got no better and the boat turned around and headed back. No way we could spot anything! Camping at one of our favourite places was great in October, although windy. Tawharanui, so close to home, yet it feels like we are away from it all! Another highlight in October was having a penguin dog come visiting the coastline at Ti Point. About 16 possible nesting sites were identified, giving us plenty of incentive for our Penguin Project.  We also enjoyed a visit to Omaio Gardens

A penguin expert came and talked to our Leigh Penguin Group which was very helpful giving us more understanding of these birds. We enjoyed a few movies and had plenty of social events to go to locally. At home we managed to get a step redone adding a small improvement to our backyard.

A highlight of our stay in Hervey Bay was going out on the whale watch boat. We saw numerous animals with some humpbacks coming right up to our boat. Our Air BnB was stunning and called Absolutely Beachfront with very friendly Japanese hosts. Our stay in Caloundra meant we were within a walk of four local beaches. Toasting Marshmellows at the Fire Station. Always lots to do including a 2-day Predator course at Wenderholm. Kawakawa We camped at the Top 10 Holiday Park at Paihia and completed the Twin Coast Cycleway. First ride was to Horeke, then a ride from Kaikohe to Opua. A very easy cycleway with most of it being downhill. We also visited the Kaikohe Heritage Museum and the Firehouse. Great weather to be away in our little caravan.

Matai Bay Our month began with 3 nights camping at Tawharanui. We did 2 night walks and saw 3 kiwi. Tony organised Sunday in the Park and we helped with the nursery on Tuesday. Great weather and we had a couple of trips away. First, in our caravan, we stayed at Glinks Gully then Kaihu. Sad to see many dead kauri trees at Trounson Kauri Park. A highlight was seeing two kiwi on a night walk. Next trip was visiting Masterton to see the Wings over Wairarapa Air Show. Many sunny days and very little rain. It has been great for snorkelling at Goat Island and swimming at Matheson Bay. We have had a few kayak trips as have some guests. As part of Forest and Bird we have placed penguin nesting boxes around the Leigh coast. An early phone call advised about a penguin in trouble at Leigh Motors. Tapu Camp was our destination for a little holiday on the Coromandel Peninsula staying in our caravan. We visited the Whitianga before continuing onto Coromandel township and back to Tapu. Then the following day we drove along the very windy coastal road to Port Jackson and Fletcher Bay. Supurb views of a most spectacular coast. Plenty of campsites on the way but we were glad not to be towing

Our birthday month again and we had a great party with many friends to celebrate significant birthdays for us both. It has warmed up so time to get away again in our little caravan. With friends we stayed at Miranda where we cycled 40km and the next day 26km the following day. So lovely to be able to soak in the hot pools at the Miranda Holiday Park.

After our small ship cruise in the Inside Passage we travelled by ferry to Haines. A magical place with beautiful mountain views. At the Lutak Inlet we watched brown bears catch and eat salmon. Bald eagles flew down to feed on the remains. We also visited a most unusual wildlife centre where we saw wolverine, bear, eagles, moose, deer and more. We returned from the Cook Islands after a couple of nice warm weeks. After staying in Rarotonga we flew to Atiu Island which was magical. Neon Party in Hamilton Winter arrived and it's been a good month for family things. Sisters and brother-in-laws, niece and family all arrived from Australia. Our Nissan X-trail We finally finished painting our roof,  moved the scaffolding and made a lovely courtyard by the front door which will be nice on sunny winter days, surrounded by hibiscus trees, plus a brazier table in the centre. Jenny had fun on a textile course for eco-dyeing and felting at the Whangateau Hall. We sold our ute and bought a great low kilometre Nissan X-Trail. Also

Mahurangi River More sunny days and still so warm. Great for roof painting. A rest was needed so we camped out at Tawharanui for a couple of nights. Lots of kiwi and morepork calls at night. Tony attended a fire service administration workshop at Te Atatu while Jenny took a trip down the Mahurangi River on the restored scow "Jane Gifford".

Tawharanui We both completed a LUV course so we can drive the vehicles at the Tawharanui Regional Park. A busy month again with bed & breakfast guests from England, USA, Australia, NZ and Malaysia. There were more sunny days and we managed to complete the painting of the roof at the back of the house and make a start with the front.

Pukeko at Tawharanui The remains of Cyclone Fehi arrive on the first day of February, dropping some rain. A small respite before Cyclone Gita made a short visit and dropped more rain. By late February the visibility in the marine reserve improved dramatically and the fish life was just amazing! We again helped in the nursery at Tawharanui on Tuesdays and enjoyed the birdlife - even the Pukeko

Goat Island Marine Reserve The year started with good conditions for snorkelling at Goat Island. Many of our bed & breakfast guests also enjoyed seeing all the fishes there. Water and air temperature very warm. One stormy day with strong winds and a bit of rain, but mainly sunny days.

Goat Island Marine Reserve A good month catching up with family and friends and going to endless Christmas functions and BBQs. Water at Goat Island so lovely and warm, so good snorkelling too. Many visitors staying in our bed and breakfast room, from Auckland, Waiheke, UK and Waikato. Hot sunny days but garden so dry. Continuing to paint our huge roof, with another large section now complete.

Crib at Toko Mouth A great month for getting away. First a few days in Miranda - cycling, birdwatching and enjoying the hot pools. Then we flew to Dunedin, picked up a hire car and drove to Toko Mouth. A lovely spot by almost deserted beach and estuary. Next day we visited and stayed at the Catlins. Still many wet days but it is warming up. We have had many bookings for our bed & breakfast room and have spent many days tidying up the garden after winter. Managed to get away camping at Wenderholm and Tawharanui. We also helped in the nursery at Tawharanui and did some planting too. Labour weekend was busy with a couple of guests who enjoyed visiting various things in the area.
