South Shore walk

Pretty dull day for a walk with the camera, but I’d been editing photos all morning so it was time to get out for some fresh air and a walk. These pics were taken along the South Shore walk, South Brighton Canon R7, EF 500 f/4 and Sigma 24 – 105 f/4 Art.

Experimenting

Decided to try some REALLY long exposures today down in Scarborough using, not one, but two ND filters. One on the end of the lens, and one in the canon EF – RF drop in filter adapter (you need an adapter if you are using an EF lens on a Canon Mirrorless camera such as the R5 that I was using). Exposure was around 180 secs at f/8 ISO 160. I was using a Sigma 24 – 105 F/4 Art lens on my Canon R5.

I decided that black and white suited the effect I was looking for. Well that’s my story anyway.

The easiest place to photograph little birds …..

Went for a walk today around the Christchurch Botanic Gardens with my mate Greg and my annoying companion, incompetence. He always seems to show up when I’m taking pictures!

It’s amazing how close you can get to the birds there, I guess because they are so used to humans wandering bye. We spoke to one of the Botanic gardens staff and he pointed out a Kowhai tree that was in flower, commenting that there was always a bellbird hanging around feeding on the flowers. Sure enough, when we wandered over, there it was, having a great time amongst the flowers. I don’t think I have ever been so close to one before .. we were photographing it from about two metres away – and that’s when incompetence showed his ugly face. I couldn’t understand why my lens wouldn’t focus! After we had left the bird to its fun, I realised that I had accidentally knocked the focus limiter switch to 3m to infinity, instead of having it set to its full range! So many of the photos weren’t quite sharp. Sigh.

To be honest, from the way it was flittering about, it looked as though it had had too much nectar and was therefore a little bit drunk!

North of Punakaiki

Over the years I have spent many happy days staying at a friends bach (holiday home) situated a few kilometers north of Punakaiki. It’s a beautiful spot to while away the hours, soaking in the aroma of succulent bush infused with salt sea air .. it’s a heady mix! Here’s a few photos of the beach scapes a stones throw away from the bach’s front door.

Dull equals Black and White

Went for a walk along Sumner beach to the clock tower yesterday. It was a dull, misty sort of day, so not much colour in the photos, and what do you do when you have dull photos .. you convert them black and white of course!

Bealey Spur, Arthurs Pass

Took a hike with some friends up Bealey Spur track a couple of weekends back. Well worth the effort as it’s an easy 1.5 hour drive from Christchurch, and a pleasant walk up through beach forest, which slowly gives way to open grass land, then open tops with great views all around Arthurs Pass National Park. Here’s a few photos from the trip. And here’s a link to my Strava Record.
