Yes. You read the headline correctly. My name is Mae West, not the actress. It just so happened I married a man, Paul, last name West. He was a smidgen older than me, like thirty years. Some said I was a gold digger, but I wasn't. He was a wealthy business man that just so happened let me quit my job as a flight attendant and enjoy long days at the spa, mall, and our home in the Hamptons.

The closest thing to camping Paul ever took me was to the Ritz Carlton and even then we ordered room service.

Then...the FBI raid in the middle of the night made me think I shouldn't've stayed at the spa or the mall all day. Paul's little business ended up swindling millions of dollars out of people in a ponzi scheme. Everything was taken. . .everything but a campground. . .in Kentucky!

Neither sounded good to me.

Apparently, Paul had won a bet when he was in college. His winning was Happy Trails Campground. It was explained to me, Paul had put the campground deed in my name. It also came with a camper. No joke! Me driving a camper?

I wanted to refuse and keep my cute convertible, but that was seized too.

Long story short, I found myself driving to Kentucky in a big ole RV that I knew nothing about. On the way, I'd gotten into a mean fight with a toilet plunger and it didn't turn out to pretty. So, going to a campground where the brochure showed photos of the amazing Kentucky Bluegrass, the backdrop of the Daniel Boone National Park, and a crystal lake to dip my toes, started to sound like a semi vacation until my lawyer could find a buyer.

I finally made it to Kentucky and you could just imagine my surprise when the beautiful Kentucky bluegrass was brunt, there was a slime film on the lake and let's just say the copyright on the brochure was from the 60's!

And if that wasn't bad enough, Paul...remember him? Well, he broke out of prison and was floating in the Happy Trails Campground lake. . .DEAD!

Have you ever been around one of those people who say there’s something coming or something about to happen? Or you’ve been thinking ‘bout her and she calls at that moment, that instant?

My best friend, Iris Peabody, she’s not one of those psychics or anything, but she does get those weird feelings ever once and a while. The first time we were in third grade. She swore to me how she’d seen a vision of Bobby Peters, the cutest boy in school, kissing me on the old rubber tire that was cemented into the ground on the playground. As soon as the teacher said it was time for recess, I darted out to that playground and perched myself right on top of that tire.

Until…

Bobby Peters himself ran by and pushed me right off, sending me to the ground and breaking my wrist. Boy, was Iris wrong.

Then there was another time when we were in high school and Iris told me she’d had one of them visions where Bobby Peters was going to ask me to prom. When I saw him walk over to our table in the cafeteria, my heart went pitter-pat.

Until…

He up and asked Iris. She went.

It wasn’t until years later, when I’d already gotten married to Richard Butler—making me Bernadette Butler, stay-at-home mom and ex-United States postal worker—and Iris was already divorced from Bobby Peters when she called me up at three p.m. one afternoon. I was getting ready to head on over to the high school football stadium to watch Grady. Oh no, he didn’t play football; he was the Sugar Creek Gap grizzly bear mascot that did get promoted to manager of the team the following year. Still, I went to every game Sugar Creek Gap High School played to watch my boy run up and down the sidelines in the ridiculous bear outfit, waving the high school flag in our very small town of Sugar Creek Gap, Kentucky.

Anyways, back to Iris. Well, she called me right before I was setting out for the game, asking all sorts of questions about Richard and whether I’d talked to him. Her exact words were, “I feel like something is wrong with Richard.”

To this day, I still get chills thinking about it.

Iris insisted I call him, but I knew Richard was away on business in our neighboring state of Tennessee, according to the online calendar we shared. There was no reason to bother him, especially when Iris’s little “feelings” had never come true yet.

I was cheering on the cute bear when I noticed the state Sheriff had showed up at the game. It was like a slow-motion scene when I recalled seeing them ask someone a question, and the person had pointed directly at me. The Sheriff officers’ eyes met mine, and my stomach dropped. Iris Peabody’s feeling about my beloved Richard had come true: he had been killed in a car wreck on his way to his meeting.

Happy October, Y'all!!!

It sure doesn't feel like fall around here. It's in the mid 90's. Although I do love my pool, I LOVE fall and really can't wait until I can wear scarves, sweaters, and then I'll be complaining about how cold it is.

Let me tell y'all..it can be 70's degrees out side and I'll be in shorts and flip flops...70's inside and I've got on a sweatshirt and cover on me! Right now, this morning...I have my coffee, a snuggy on plus another blanket on my legs! But...in about 20 minutes I'll be roasting from menopause!

Bless this hot mess!!!

Austin and Brady turned 22 over the weekend! I just can't believe it!!! We had a really nice time with family and friends. Brady's lady friend came with him while Austin brought a slew of college kids with him.

I had Sonny's barbecue cater the event and it was soooo good! We had pulled chicken and pulled pork.

I was sad Jack wasn't able to make it. University of Cincinnati basketball had their photos taken....go figure!

Are y'all on Instagram?? I stick a lot of pictures over there...it's probably gonna be a little too much Tonya but I just love them photos!!!!!!

The Daniel Boone National Forest is gorgeous in the fall. The leaves have painted the sides of the mountains with yellow, oranges, reds and browns you won't see anywhere else. That's why it's such a popular destination for weddings!

When a wedding party show up at Happy Trails Campground, Mae West is thrilled. She's all things girly and excited to assist the bride in all things southern, which is what the bride is hankering for.
Mae recognizes the parents of the bride when they arrive. They are from her past. The past she's been desperately trying to escape...especially since it was the time she was married to Paul West. This just isn't any couple, it's the owners of the famous Moonbucks Coffee Company.

Determined to get the happy couple married off and on their way, hoping to see some of her past drive off forever, Mae volunteers herself and the Laundry Club ladies to become the wedding coordinators.

The wedding is set to take place in the beautiful wedding barn at the Old Train Station Motel, only Gert Hobson, the owner of Trails Coffee Shop and providing the coffee for the happy couple, has decided there's no way she's going to help out with Tom Moon's daughter's wedding since she claims how years ago Tom Moon STOLE her coffee blend recipe known today as the special Moonbucks blend.

A public fight between Gert and Tom leaves Gert a prime suspect after a member of the wedding party is found dead at the wedding venue. There might not be a happily ever after for the bride to be or Gert Hobson if Mae West and the Laundry Club ladies don't solve the murder before the wedding party's RV rolls out of town.

This past weekend sure didn't start off like Eddy and I thought it would. It was parent's weekend at The University of Kentucky. It's Austin's senior year. After his term as his fraternity president was up, he'd decided he was done with the fraternity life so he went alumni. Since he's no longer active in the fraternity, he is more than happy to spend his weekends with his friends as normal students do. It by no means hurt our feelings when Austin decided we weren't going to do parents weekend. That meant we didn't have to go to the football. Hahha! WHICH...Eddy and I were good with that. Nonetheless, we made other plans for another day in the upcoming week to drive down there and go out to supper.

On Saturday I spent the day writing on one of the new Mail Carrier Series books and getting my 2020 publishing scheduled nailed down, emailing various employees such as my cover artist and editor as well as getting my content planned on various social media platforms. AND....getting all the new recipes for the next few books baked and filmed so we can get those up on the Youtube book channel.

It was a great working day. Cody came over for ribs on the grill and we were ready to turn in for the night...then....my bank called to ask me about a couple of charges that were out of character for me! Someone had stolen my card and charged all sorts of stuff. It happens...

Sundays I try not to work. We like to go to church and get groceries for the week. I meal plan and we just take it easy. Nope. Not this Sunday!

Oh those little stinkers! Here's how Sunday went. After we got our groceries unloaded, I said, "I think I'll get another cup of coffee and sit by the pool before I start baking." Eddy thought it sounded like a good idea so he got himself a cup of coffee too.

Rowena was looking out the window at us as she does, then I noticed she started to get fidgety. I figured she was looking at mama cat but then I noticed two little yellow ears pop out from underneath the deck. I jumped up and ran up there. THREE MORE KITTENS!!!

Y'ALL! I already had the FIVE in the window well....so this means both mama cats had babies! The yellow kitten ran underneath the deck (the small part where we can't get to) and I grabbed the two grey ones.

Eddy and I were running around like crazy! I was so stunned, I...I...I'm still stunned. I already had homes for the five and they were going there today, but I called the people and figured a couple days wasn't going to hurt. Then I checked the other two I'd just caught to see if they would eat cat food. They did! So, I gathered up all the babies. 7 total and put them in the carrier and drove them down to Lexington to their new homes....

Then we stopped by my parent's house for a nice visit with them before we called Austin. We weren't going to stop by to see him but he said, "Can you take me grocery shopping."
Of course I jumped on it! So all in all, we did end up going to Lexington during parent's weekend.

AND BEFORE Y'ALL EMAIL ME ABOUT CATCHING THE MAMAS:

We have two have a heart traps. They are covered so the mamas don't know they are traps. I can't leave the traps out overnight because the coyotes or raccoons would claw the mamas to death. When I do put out the traps (daily) they sit on top of them. It's like they know what the traps are. I've even had three animal rescues here. We do have another rescue coming in the next week to see if they can use one of those box traps with the string. You know...the old kind.

So PLEASE do not email about how I can catch the mamas. AND don't fill out the ask me a question form about how I'm going to catch the mamas.

Trust me...we are beside ourselves over.

Those giggling girls over there are a wedding party. The one with the bride sash on is obviously the bride. They aren't from here, but she wanted a southern wedding. That's something we do great around here....fun weddings. I'm excited to be catering their coffee bar. It's a thing now.

You recognize her as who? She's the daughter of Tom Moon? As in Tom Moon the owner of the huge coffee chain Moonbucks?

I'm sorry. I'm not going to be able to give you that sample after all. In fact, I'm going to have to close. Something just came up. I'm finally going to get the chance to confront Tom Moon. About?

Well...years ago Tom Moon stole my recipe for my special coffee blend that you know as the Moonbucks special roast. I can't wait to get my claws into him.....

A few months ago, I was lucky enough to be asked to come to White Pines Bookstore for a Mystery Day. It is located in White Pines, TN. The event was over the weekend and it was sooooo much fun!

One of the coordinators had made a special June Heal cake! If you've read The Magical Cures Mystery Series, you'll know how much this cake means to June and her sanity!!! Isn't it awesome???

There were 7 Kappes Krew Street members there too!! All of them had to drive an hour or more to come and I couldn't be more honored. You can be a member of the Kappes Cozy Krew group too!!! >>>> click here

While I was in Tennessee, I'd rented a cabin really in the woods! I'd gotten food and didn't need to leave for a few days. I didn't spend the time writing, I worked on my production schedule and content schedule. I had gotten a lot done that requires the time. This is really the hardest part of being a full time writer. Making sure all the business stuff is done.

I did take some hikes and just so happened to walk into a clearing where there was this little cemetery that was completely hidden, but had the most spectacular view of the mountains. In fact, I went twice to visit. It was really nice.

Then...as a writer....I did a little research when I got back. The stones had carved dates on them by in the mid 1800's. The two family names were Parton and Thompson...as in DOLLY!!! Actually, Dolly's childhood home was a stones throw away from my little one room cabin I'd rented!

It was so neat. I had no idea. I was staying on her childhood road deeeeeeeeeeeeep in the woods. I mean....deep!!!!

While I'm chatting, the neighborhood kids are starting to walk to school. I really can't believe how fast time has flown. In fact, Austin started his senior year at UK and Jack started his junior year at UC. Unbelievable how old EDDY is! Haha!

We had a family get together and I mean aunts, uncles, cousins, cousins once removed, second cousins...and three of my boys went to Nicholasville with us.

Over the course of our time spent together this weekend, I asked all four boys what they considered their childhood home.

Every single one said a house that we ONLY lived in for only FOUR years! We've been in our current house for almost 8 now. We moved here because they went to the neighborhood school and I was in six car pools.

They said it was because they had long nights outside running around and playing. When we moved to our current house, they were practically driving and then off they went....

Which brings me to yesterday...Eddy and I have been thinking about downsizing. Of course I LOVE my she-shed and my pool, but I hate cleaning this big house and five bedrooms....

So we went house hunting. We want something very secluded and private. We will add a pool and that at the new place. LOW AND BEHOLD...

We found a gem! Four acres of beautiful country, creek, and pond plus cute little bridges and look at this guard rail on the road with the awesome flower box!!! Those are TREES growing in the flower box. This is one of the many bridges to the property.

Y'all! I literally went by the house so much. We would look at one and then go back to this one. The house was built in 1910! It's a small white clapboard house and it had yet to be listed on the MLS.

Y'all!!! Again...I drove by the house so much, the OWNER came out and stopped me the last time! He said he's been seeing a little red Fiat driving by so he though he'd come out.

If you think this cute guardrail is adorable...you should've seen the rest of the property! Amazing...until...I saw the house. Oh my stars! Yeah..um..NO!

There were mannequins with wedding dresses on. I was a tad bit creeped out but really there was so much work to be done, that I'm not into that. I guess we will press on and probably end up building something on some property to fit our needs.

We spent the rest of what Labor Day we had left enjoying our pool. It ain't so bad here. I guess I'll just keep swiffering!

Rowena sure did know how to spend her day off!

I also was tweaking the plot for Stamped Out. I have to say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE creating new series and I think the Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery is going to be really fun! I hope you preorder your copy!

Seriously...curse?
Meh, I'm not scared...

especially when there is a lot of money to be found. At least that's what the treasure hunter staying at my campground had said during his time to tell a story over the campfire. Now, I know most stories told in the dark over a few scorched s'mores and a roaring flame were considered tall tales, but not the legend of John Swift and his silver mine.

Legend has it, over 400 years ago an Englishman by the name of John Swift had been a sea captain with trades when the English were taking over the land. John Swift was so mad at how his people had robed the land that he started to counterfeit the English crown and giving it to the people of the land. It just so happens, John Swift ventured into our very own Daniel Boone National Forest where he hide his operations and not only buried much of the coins, but found silver. After being put in jail for his criminal ways, his journals were left behind along with his maps and still today treasure hunters flock Kentucky to look for the treasure.

Only....few have come away without something going horribly wrong. I'm not scared. Me and the Laundry Club ladies want our own crack at finding the treasure and that means packing up my campervan and heading to a primitive campground without electricity or cell phone service.

We aren't scared! After all, we are being accompanied by one of the best treasure hunters who knows exactly what he's doing.

At least I thought he did until he fell off a cliff and died. Unfortunately, there's no way out because a big rain has flooded the roads and it appears as if we are in a little pickle. I was beginning to think we were having just a little bad luck until another person turned up dead.

Now I'm wondering if it's the John Swift curse or someone trying to scare us....

How adorable is this cover??? 

Honestly, I can't believe that I have another series coming out. Truthfully, the series started out soooooo different then what it has ended up. 

A few months ago a local town had gone up for sale. Yes! A town for sale. I was so intrigued by it and thought it would be a lot of fun for a widow to buy the town and her occupation...a mail carrier...why not??

For months I played with different plots and characters, but my mail carrier, Bernadette Davis, wasn't having any part of it. 

Then it hit me. She just needs to be a widow, a mail carrier, and have an adult son in a small town. There isn't anything particularly interesting to people outside of the town like my other series, but it's the characters and town itself that will be the big draw for my readers. 

It doesn't hurt that a nursing home is on Bernadette's route which is home to a few savvy elderlies.  

Once I got all of that established, the story just poured and felt like it was natural. I have to say that I'm beyond thrilled with it and I can't wait to share Bernadette with the cozy mystery reader world!

When I decided to become an author I had ONE goal in mind and still live by that goal: REACH ONE READER!!

What I mean by that is that I want to make ONE person smile everyday, one person get lost into a world of laughter, light mystery, and forget about life for a while.

No matter how easy or how hard your day is, we still need the down time. That was what reading a book did for me. I've never claimed to be a literary great or a read that you have to think really hard to follow the plot. I'm like a beach read. Something that you can pick up and know that you will smile, laugh, and think how on earth does Tonya come up with these crazy characters.

That was and still is my number one goal. So...when I decided to become an author, I wanted to connect with readers the way I would want an author to connect with me. I like hearing how authors work, but I LOVED hearing about their everyday life and things they enjoyed because I felt like I was stepping inside of their world. If I liked that, then I hoped my readers would like that. Of course I have to talk about writing and books, but mostly I'm about everyday life on social media and on my blog. Plus I LOVE giveaways and I love giving them away. I'm a giver...so sue me!

What does coffee have to do with all this? I LOVE COFFEE!! I'm addicted. It's bad. Six years ago I started posting a daily good morning coffee photo on my Facebook. It took off like gossip in a small town and I found a fun way to connect with my friends and readers on social media. I've even gotten a lot of fun coffee items mailed to me from my reader friends. (BTW..I don't use the word FAN because that word rubs me wrong. Readers are readers, like me!)

Every night I look forward to getting up the next day because I know I'm going to get to have coffee with a few thousand of my friends!

Hi do there! I'm Coke and I'm the owner of the Old Train Station Motel. Welcome to our grand opening. I've got you in guest room eight. So if you'll follow me, I'll tell you about old station along our way.

I don't know what I was thinking when I decided to buy the old train station just north of Normal in the Daniel Boone National Park. It'd been run down for years. It was a beautiful station in it's day and I had a crazy idea I'd turn some of the space into ten guest rooms.
Like I said....crazy!

The middle has been restored to a gorgeous courtyard area. I've even put in telescopes for the motel guests to enjoy the constellations after they eat in the Caboose Diner.
There are five rooms on each side of the courtyard. I have two barns on the property. One I'm using for the hoedown tonight. I really hope you can make it. Blue Ethel and the Farm Boys is the name of the band. I've got good food and plenty of sweet tea. So bring your partner and come for the Do-Si-Do.

As you can see, we've got plenty of room to sit and fill your tummy. It's a good time to socialize with the locals. If you run into someone old gizzer by the name of Jay, don't pay him any mind. He's mad because I bought this place from his family. It's been in his family for years and it's also under bankruptcy.

He's got a thorn up his youknowwhat because I'm making him move out of that stable in the back. He trains locals how to rope and compete in horse competition. It's a big deal in Kentucky and many college offers scholarships. I know it's his livelihood but I've got to make a go of this motel. The stables will be a perfect place for a wedding venue.

I've given him three weeks to move his clients to a different stable. That should be plenty of time, but he don't see it that way. Of course, he insists on arguing with me...oh...do you hear that?

It sounds like music has started. Go on now, get your things in your guest room and come on out back to the hoedown.

(Y'all this is really Tonya's family on a Sunday. Yep....I write what I know. These are my family. I hope you enjoy a little big of southern Sunday family fun!)

Battle at Camp Wildcat, Normal, Kentucky

Hi there! I'm so glad you're visiting our little town of Normal. Right over there is where the Camp Wildcat happened between the north and the south on the morning of October 21, 1861. 

I'm Queenie French the Foundation of Camp Wildcat president. We met at The Laundry Club yesterday. We've been doing the reenactment for years and this year is going to be the best yet. 

If you take a gander at the map, you'll see you're standing where the red star is located. 

I know the battle was in the fall, but Colonel Theophilous Garrard had started to form his unit in the spring of 1861. 

Besides, the weather in Kentucky in the fall is so wonky and unpredictable, I asked the committee to change the reenactment to the spring. Plus, look at this weather. Gorgeous!

Granted, the outcome of the reenactment is the same year after year, but I have to say that the actors I've picked this year will be fantastic and on their mark. It takes a lot of skill to drop dead and lay there for an hour or two until the reenactment is over. 

I know of few of my actors are a little. . .um . . .nervous since Greaser Gadie has escaped prison and they were on the jury. I'd be nervous too if I was a juror and he turned to me and say, "I'm taking a minute to remember your face so when I get out of here I'm going to find you and kill you."

But I'm sure he's long gone by now.

Right? I mean, if I escaped from prison, I wouldn't hang around to make good on a silly promise. . .would you???

CAMPFIRE BANANA BOATS

Ingredients

4 small bananas

1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup miniature marshmallows

Directions:

1. Leaving skin on, cut the banana down the middle without cutting through the bottom of the skin.

2. Open the banana like a taco and add some chocolate chips and miniature marshmallows.

3. Wrap the stuffed banana in foil.

4. Sit the foiled banana on a grate over the open campfire.

5. Check the banana in five minutes and continue to check until the marshmallows and chocolate chips have melted to desired taste.

Good morning! Get on in here. Welcome to The Laundry Club. I heard some rumblings y'all might be stopping by. I've invited the Laundry Club gals to join us. Let me introduce myself. I'm Betts Hager. I own this laundromat and a cleaning service. Not that you're going to need a cleaning service, but you might fall in love with Normal and decide not to leave. 

That's what happened to our very own Mae West. 

Don't you just love her? We do. Well, we didn't, but we adore her now. 

Mae singlehandedly brought Happy Trails Campground back to life and started up tourism again in the Daniel Boone National Park. You do know that's where Normal is located. Right in the heart of the national park.

Anyways, our economy was headed straight in the toilet. When Mae got here, she was going to sell the campground and scatter right back to New York City. We weren't so welcoming since it was her ex-now dead-husband had taken almost everyone in Normal for their retirement. Still, everyone deserves a second chance. We gave Mae one and she gave us one.

She never left. 

Goodness gracious, enough of my gabbing. Let me introduce you to the Laundry Club gals. They are hanging out over there by the coffee bar. We love coffee and I keep it freshly brewed all day for anyone who meanders off the street or here to use the laundromat.

Girls, say hello to our new friend. Don't mind Dottie Swaggert with her sponge curlers in her hair. She's loves a tight curl in that red head of hers. That right there is Abby Fawn. She's so smart. That's probably what makes her a great librarian. If you have any questions about social media marketing, she can help you. If you have any leftovers while eating here in Normal, you can also see Abby for your Tupperware needs. 

We do have some good home cooking around these parts and if you're not careful, you just might gain a few pounds. That's why you need to meet Queenie French. That's why she's wearing that hot pink spandex suit. She teaches Jazzercise down in the undercroft of the Normal Baptist Church.

Now that you've been introduced properly, you can head on over to the puzzle station in the corner where you'll find some games while you wash and dry your clothes. Or you can enjoy your coffee in the family room area up front and watch a little tv. Or you can head on back to the reading corner where we have a shelf full of amazing books. You should check out Tonya Kappes. She's a Kentucky author. We try to promote our own kind as much as we can. 

Or you can just hang out with us. 

I guess I could tell you how we formed the club. All us gals come here to chit chat and it evolved into a book club. It was fittin' we name it The Laundry Club after the name. It stuck and that's what we are known for around Normal. 

We were just gossiping...er...I mean discussing the big reenactment tomorrow. Queenie is in charge and she's having a hard time finding a replacement for someone who can't make it. Plus, we heard one of the prisoners just broke out and the Kentucky State Police is all over Normal. 

Anyways, top off your coffee cup and sit a spell.

Mae West, owner of Happy Trails Campground, never thought she would become an actress like her namesake. Calling herself an actress might be far stretch as she plays a minor role in the local Civil War reenactment BATTLE AT CAMP WILDCAT.

The motorhome owners have filed a lawsuit and suing her for the deed to Happy Trails Campground. Mae has embraced Normal and there's nothing or no one going to take her campground. She's determined to find the motorhome and return it to the owners before she hands over any deed to anyone.

Mae just might find out that tapping into her namesake just might come in handy when coming face to face with a serial killer.
