I attended my first ever software launch yesterday and I wasn't disappointed. It was the premiere of Vista, Microsoft's new operating system and it was held in downtown Toronto... in an ice house!

I recently created a vlog (video blog) for our community. The federal election provided me with the perfect start to what I hope will become an informing and entertaining web site. The idea is simple: I am welcoming everyone who lives in Toronto's Beach community to participate by shooting & editing their own Beach stories.

There are a lot of creative people in the Beach™ – many of them expert in the arts. Lets see how many of them get involved!

I work from home and my wife works downtown. Every Tuesday it's my turn to watch the kids of two other work at home dads. My afternoon is spent shuttling kids: Gadgeteers for the boys and gymnastics for the girls. Sometimes I manage to squeeze a medium sized shop into the eye of the storm. After the JK/SK express I head home to make dinner. I usually get home just in time to stop one of our three teenage boys from consuming the next two night's dinner or a box of cereal or both. Five kids converge to act out their day. Somewhere in the chaos chores get handed-out, homework gets started and the dog gets walked. In the middle of this circus on the counter that separates the kitchen and the family room sits our goldfish bowl.

Who say's bedtime can't be fun for kids? I cut this on iMovie and hammered out the beats using Logic Pro. TIlly (our dog) had to see what all the laughter was about so she has her cameo. NO KIDS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO.

Some thoughts…

"Television's magnetic hold on us…" is facing competition.

The traditional business model for television is threatened by the internet.

Viewers that at first gravitated towards the speciality networks (and away from the traditional networks and local channels) did so on the promise of a steady stream of themed programming 24/7. Food Network is always about food, etc.

As viewers become spoiled with the notion of always available content (to suit their interest) they will eventually turn to the internet for a richer experience. This in part may explain why advertisers are gravitating towards the internet: always on, always relevant and few gate keepers.

Advertisers don't have to negotiate with a broadcaster to associate themselves with quality programming – they just need to go out and produce it themselves.

Eventually viewers may rely on traditional television for quality sports and entertainment (high definition of course) and the internet for everything else. One-stop channels organized by interest, religion, etc. will flourish on the internet.

In the not to distant future, instead of a phone call from my mother telling me what i missed on Oprah – she will email me the link to download (for a fee or with advertising) Oprah's best ever episode…
