Odd Nosdam is a hip-hop producer. David Madson, the mastermind behind the project, is supposedly one of the founders of Los Angeles independent hip-hop record Label Anticon.

Nosdam has a heavy history with some notable bands such as cLOUDDEAD, Sage Francis and even produced a soundtrack for Element Skateboards' video "This Is My Element".

He has a very eclectic style that normally stays within the realm of hip-hop but ventures to other genres. His productions are all over the place but are generally very good. Earlier this year he produced Serengeti's "Kenny Lewis LP". Check him out!

My first exposure to Dead Meadow was on Emerica's ground-breaking skate video "Stay Gold". They have at least three songs in the whole video. Perhaps the best moment that utilizes Dead Meadow on the soundtrack is in the intro. The introduction is a gnarly time-lapsed video introducing all the members of the team throwing down huge tricks. It works well due to the band's honed psych-rock feel. The song is "Sleepy Silver Door", a seven minute straight up jam with fuzzy guitars and slick vocals proclaiming "I'm washed upon the shore of reality". From that moment on, I was a Dead Meadow freak. I immediately snagged their fifth studio album "Feathers" and listened it on repeat. If your a fan of classic rock, psyche-rock, or anything that rocks, check em out. You won't regret it.

No Joy has always been one of those bands I was somewhat reluctant to listen to. Once again, not really sure why. As some of you know, I am an avid Pitchfork user. Earlier this year they gave No Joy's second full-length album a solid 8.0 rating, and if you're familiar with Pitchfork, you know that anything from a 7 up is really good by Pitchfork's standards. Even Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast tweeted about how good they are. So upon that rating and their fair-reviewed E.P. "Pastel and Pass Out", I had to finally check em out. And I'm glad I did.

No Joy is a Montreal based duo that makes dreamy shoegaze music. "Here Tarot Lies" is a perfect example of what they are all about. It wastes no time, jumping right into the gaze as the song begins with great emphasis on fuzzy guitar and reverbed vocals.

Check out "Here Tarot Lies" from "Wait to Pleasure", one of my favorite songs of 2013.

When I first listened to Weekend's debut album "Sports", recommended to me by cousin Kirk, I was hooked. My ears hurt for the majority of time I listened to them but I refused to turn the music down. That is one requirement that comes with listening to Weekend; they must be listened to VERY LOUD in order to really receive the full experience they create on their albums. Which brings up another great point about Weekend in general; they create albums with their own individual atmospheres. "Sports" was a beautiful, fuzzy, dark world surrounded in saw like distortion, a strong bass, and vocals blended with perfect reverb.

Then there was their "Red" E.P.
"Red" was a solid little E.P. of five songs that conjured lighter moments on "Sports" but with faster tempos and clearer...well, everything! Vocals were clearer, guitars were cleaner but still bathed in their perfect dose of reverb, and drums were still loud and proud. "Red" also produced one of my all time favorite roadtrip songs with "The One You Want". However, looking back now; "Red" was a transitional album. The 80's pop influence was beginning to show. And on "Jinx", boy does it show.

"Jinx" is a dream-pop/rock album. And a pretty darn good one. They sound like a mature 80's pop band with influences of Tears for Fears, The Cure, and even New Order. While the album didn't quite leave me yearning to re-listen to it as much as "Sports" did; it did produce some killer singles. "Celebration, FL", probably my favorite song on the album, is a dreamy, synth-laden, wonderland of 80's pop. It's not that I didn't like the album, I actually still listen to it often, it just didn't feel as unique or consistent as "Sports". It is also their most accessible album. It's fun, it's loud... my ears hurt... I've been listening to them for the last half-hour. My ears need a break.
It may have something to do with Kendrick's beast verse on Big Sean's "Control" with Jay Electronica. Kendrick literally drops the names of some of the best rappers currently, including Jay Electronica AND Big Sean (who he raps with in the same song), stating that he's trying to make them irrelevant and unimportant. It was a historical moment for hip-hop and shifted the focus from the typical nonsense you hear in hip-hop to keeping it real and taking things back to the way hip-hop was.

This is probably my favorite discovery of 2013. I remember scanning through RateYourMusic, and seeing this album pretty high up on the list for 2013. I had no idea what to expect upon my first listen to the orchestra. What I was met with was an overwhelming, exciting, and somewhat unsettling album of experimental, loose...jazz music?

That's right. Jazz music.

"Exit!" is a two song album stretching to roughly 45 minutes. The first song is nearly 20 minutes long and second is nearly 25. However, to get the absolute full feel of this album I recommend listening to it straight through without interruption. The dynamics in this release are to die for. Spastic brass, drums, and guitar create a world of madness that can last from two minutes to five. And just when you think you can't take it anymore, they completely shift things. "Part One", the first track on the album, highlights this feature very well. Half-way through the song the saxaphone, drums, and piano all come to a halt allowing one of the female vocalists to croon "Fire stay with me" atop one of the sickest bass lines I've ever heard.

Give it a try. I beg you. And let us know how you feel about it!

2013 has been an absolute great year for Hip Hop. We've seen new releases from Kanye, Jay-Z, Eminem and Drake to Earl, Pusha T, and Danny Brown. This list is going to present some of our personal favorite songs from this year and why.

Pusha T - "Numbers on the Boards"

"Numbers on the Boards" was my first experience of Clipse member Pusha T. His flow and lyricism is out of this world. Especially on top of a killer Kanye-produced beat.

Danny Brown - "The Return Ft. Freddie Gibbs"

"The Return" is a direct sequel to Outkast's "The Return of the G" off of Danny Brown's new album "Old". This song deals with the idea of Danny Brown's "image" as being weak or soft. This is something that Andre 3000 experienced aswell. The beat is in the bass on this song and flow is ridiculous. Gibb's part is probably my favorite. Danny kills it too though.

Black Milk - "Sunday's Best/ Monday's Worst"

This is Detroit rapper Black Milk's two part single from his new album "No Poison No Paradise". It's a story covering his bring up and the contrast of his older years compared to his younger. "Sunday's Best" explains being a kid in a religious family. Milk is woken up in order to make it to church. "Monday's Worst" is his older years trying to survive by theft and stick ups.

This album might be from a year ago, but it definitely still worth bringing attention too. This is, in my opinion, one of the most overlooked albums of last year.

I discovered this album through The Needle Drop, a great YouTube channel headed by Anthony Fantano (The internet's busiest music nerd) who reviews a wide genre of albums and rates them. Most of you probably have discovered his videos, and if you haven't, YOU SHOULD. I was watching his review of this album I just remembering how intriguing the album cover was. So after hearing Anthony praise the album, naturally, I had to check it out. What I was met with was a strange form of rock. It feels like 90's grunge music but with more finesse. The songs are very loose and don't seem to stick to a straight path which creates some very impressive dynamics. Even more impressive and interesting, Pile is simply a conventional rock back. There are no effects other than sharp guitar distortion. The drums are intricate and sync well with the heavy guitar. In another review of the album at Sputnik, the reviewer makes a very good point about the chemistry of the band on this album. As stated in the review, the drums and guitars seem to fluctuate with lead vocalist's crackly, full vocals. Combine this element with their uncanny song structures and you've got yourself one hell of a rock album.

Check out the killer opening track "Baby Boy"

Death Grips. Even their name is crazy.

Consisting of MC Ride "Stefan Burnett", drummer Zach Hill, who has been in many acts such as Hella and Marnie Stern, and Andy "Flatliner" Morin, Death Grips blends hip hop, noise, and punk rock creating a truly unique style. Death Grips arrived on the scene with their free mixtape "Exmilitary". From there they only got bigger and bigger. "The Money Store" their second full length release was met with high acclaim and positive feedback. Their third release "No Love Deep Web" found them ditching their labels wishes and releasing their album for free and before the expected release date.

Well, now they have a new album. It's free. And once again it pushes all the limits that have been previously established by Death Grips. On this release we hear even more truly bizarre beats and Zach Hill's spastic drumming. However, MC Ride takes a different route on this release. The feel is much less "Hip Hop" and more so "Experimental".

If you haven't experienced Death Grips, I highly recommend you give them a listen. They raise the bar with every release and do so with a passion for making music.

Ty Segall is the man. With at-least four or more bands/sideprojects and his solo efforts, Ty is keeping rock alive. Ever since I first heard "Caesar", an uncanny, fuzzy, and just plain weird song, I've loved Ty Segall and just about anything he is in since.

This album, "Fuzz" has all the attributes you would expect from a Ty Segall album: rock riffs that sound straight out of the 70's, fuzzy (no pun intended) and prevalent guitar distortion, and Segall's patented vocals. However, Segall is drumming on this thing. That's right! The majority of his endeavors feature him playing lead guitar. But on this thing he gets to show-off just how good of a musician he is by drumming and doing vocals.

You can't leave out Charlie Moothart, though. Moothart is the riff-man. You might have heard some of his influence on The Segall Band's "Slaughterhouse". The riffs are slower than most Segall projects, but this what they want with "Fuzz". Moothart provides face-melting riffs and has some solid fuzzy leads over Roland Casio's exceptional bass playing.

Check this thing out if your a fan of: Rock, Ty Segall, Black Sabbath, Face-melting riffs that keep you humming for days.
J-Zone is not your typical rapper. He doesn't care about rims, swag, or even texting. He's an old rapper/producer out of New York City and he's doing everything he can to do what he loves to do. Rap and make music.

Peter Pan Syndrome is J-Zone's first LP in nine years. That's right, nine! And while this thing was released in 2013, he sounds like it's straight out of the late 80's early 90's. There are crackly old samples of drums, real drums, movie samples and much more.

It's a fun record that covers topics that are relatively new to hip hop. Zone talks about nasty cribs, faking a slip-and-fall in a Whole Foods store, and how tired he is of seeing girls in the club more worried about their cell phones than mackin'. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about this album is how much J makes fun of himself. Throughout the whole album Zone pokes fun at himself for his less-than-glamorous career as a rapper.

Zone is obviously keeping it real. This album was largely created in his house, the majority of drums are played by him, and he used antiquated and outdated equipment/software to record it. "Peter Pan Syndrome" is a record of passion, and it exemplifies just how much he loves to make music and he won't let anything get in his way to do it.

I have missed blogging since the minute I left it. Thankfully, my Convergence and Social Theory teacher had us start a blog about a topic of interest. How could I not take the opportunity to blog about music for a grade!? So here we are. 2013. There has been an insurmountable amount of new music coming out. New bands, new songs, new albums. So with that said let's jump right in and get this started.

True Widow - "Four Teeth"

True Widow is a three piece band from Dallas, TX. I had heard about them from my cousin a couple years ago but never got around to checking them out. Their third, and latest album "Circumambulation" is a gloomy, shoe-gaze, rock album that handles both the "rock" and "gloom" aspect exceptionally. While the whole album is good, "Four Teeth", the third song on the album, is probably not only my favorite song from the album, but probably my favorite song from 2013. The song has this heavy but subtle guitar delay that plays this killer melody, all the while bassist Nicole Estill sings smoothly over. Check it out and lemme know what ya think!
However, though it is ridiculously fun, it is very time consuming. Anyways, who cares about me, let's talk about the music of 2010! Here are my picks for the top albums of 2010.

--10--

Sonny and the Sunsets - "Tomorrow is Alright" / "Gorillaz - Plastic Beach"

As I was making my list I was struggling to choose between these two albums. Gorillaz' "Plastic Beach" is like a playground of different songs and Sonny and the Sunsets' "Tomorrow Is Alright" is just a straight up folk jam! So I just combined the two for the #10 spot.

Sonny and the Sunsets - "Death Cream"
Gorillaz - "White Flag"

--9--

Laarks - "An Exaltation of Laarks"

I'm not really sure what a "Laark" is but what I am sure of is that Laarks' debut album "An Exaltation of Laarks" is a promising debut album. This album is chalk full of energy, synthesizers and one hell of a drummer. Lets say....Postal Service meets The National. Probably not a very good comparison but it'll do. Laarks may have an ordinary and similar sound to most bands, but they have a unique of constructing and delivering their songs.

Laarks - "All the Words You Can't Say Right"

--8--

The War On Drugs - "Future Weather EP"

Even though this EP was released at the end of October it reminisces summertime. These ambient, folk jams that feel like they are played in a stadium, urge to be played while traveling on summer day as the sun dies into the hills.

The War On Drugs - "Comin' Through"

--7--
Damien Jurado - "Saint Bartlet"

I could have added this album for the opening song "Cloudy Shoes" alone. However, the whole album follows in "Cloudy Shoes"s.......shoes. Subtle, simple and sad but easily enjoyable folk songs fronted by Jurado's Neil Young esque vocals. "Love is not painless, it's poison"!

Damien Jurado - "Cloudy Shoes"
Damien Jurado - "Arkansas"

--6--

Menomena - "Mines"

"Mines" is another chapter in Menomena's avante-garde approach to music. The songs that make up "Mines" require multiple listens in order to catch the quirky 2-measure sounds that pop up and leave. From straight forward jams like "Queen Black Acid" and "TAOS" from inconsistent, head-scratchers "Killemall" and "Lunchmeat", "Mines" will have you indubitably (pretentious word, I know, really wanted to use it though) listening closer and closer with each listen.

Menomena - "Queen Black Acid"
Menomena - "Killemall"

--5--

The Black Keys - "Brothers"

"Brothers" is a rock album. A damn good rock album. With the exception of "Too Afraid To Love You" and "The Go Getter" it's evident from the opening track (probably my favorite on the album) "Everlasting Light" that The Black Keys wanted to relax and make an enjoyable rock album. Though there are deeper stories within some songs they are usually masked by an accessible bluesy rock outfit. Whether you want to indulge in the stories and lyrics in context with the music or just straight up jam, this album delivers.

The Black Keys - "Everlasting Light"
The Black Keys - "Tighten Up"

--4--

Tame Impala - Innerspeaker

If I had a list of top summer albums, Tame Impala's debut album "Innerspeaker" would probably top it. I'll never forget starting the album with no expectations to go by and hearing "It Is Not Meant to Be" begin. I was in love with the band from the opening track. But to my good fortune that rest of the album continued to deliver just as good atmospheric, classic-rock sounding songs. "Lucidity" sounds like it is coming straight from the Beatles, only better and "Solitude is Bliss" sounds like a Phoenix song, only better. Aussie's Tame Impala is definitely one of the best new bands to arrive in 2010.

Tame Impala - "Runaway, Houses, City, Clouds"

Tame Impala - "Lucidity"

--3--

Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest

Halcyon Digest is the name of Deerhunter's latest album, and is an apt description for the album. Everything about this album suggests a halcyon feel, whether it's upbeat, headboppers like "Revival" (one of my favorite songs of the year) and "Desire Lines" or slowed down indulges like "He Would Have Laughed" and "Helicopter" (even though I prefer the live BBC version to the studio version).

"Sisterworld" is probably the most unique album of 2010, in my opinion. Throughout this entire album there lingers this subtle, eery feel. Just listen to opening track "Scissor" and you will know what I'm talking about. Songs like "No Barrier Fun" and "Drip" are straight up 100% chillers, while "Scarecrows On A Killer Slant" and "The Overachievers" are in your face rockers. Nearly every melody is creepy and unusual. Standout moments on the album arrive with creeping violens, whispers, and harmonized vocals. This is one of those albums where you have to listen to it from start to finish. Near the end you might feel creeped the hell out, pumped on how awesome the album is....or like me.... both.

The Walkmen - Lisbon

Ah yes, The Walkmen. My most anticipated album of 2010. I was somewhat apprehensive to listen to this album. You know when you look forward to something so much and find out it's not what you expected? That's what I was afraid of. But oh boy did these guys deliver. I love every Walkmen album, but this is probably one of my favorites, up there with "You And Me" and "Everybody Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone". This is a much cleaner and polished album than its predecessors. Don't get me wrong, their earlier albums were meant to sound a bit rugged and that's is what I loved about them. But this album is a more clear version of the Walkmen. Still the same unique melodies with additional horns and tingy guitar all the while fronted by Hamilton Leithauser's somewhat whiny and raspy voice. Some songs on the album reminisce old gloomy 50's style songs like "Torch Song" and "Stranded" which is something The Walkmen have always been competent in doing. Lisbon is a polished, accessible album that continues The Walkmen's signature sound.

I urge, nay, beg you to listen to this song "Red Lights" from their latest album Latin. It's funky, groovy, echoic and a straight up jam! Enjoy it. Shimmering Stars are a group from British Colombia, Canada who play lethargic 50's reminiscent rock pop music. They currently don't have much out but what they do have is definitely promising. It's evident that they have a sense of humor and enjoy what they play. Their song "I'm Gonna Try",begins with a sunny and beachy introduction and follows suit with harmonized happy vocals that ironically sing the opposite. The first words you hear are "Walking down the street and I wanna kill everyone I meet" which are sung in a skippy, fun melody. Check Em Out!
I came upon this song randomly while searching for information on Aesop Rock. I was searching through the Anticon website (label of Aesop Rock, Why?, etc.) while a pop-up player started playing this song. I disregarded it for about the first 30 seconds and kept reading. Eventually this sick little melody started looping and waves of percussion backed it up. I immediately stopped reading and searched around for the player to see what song was playing and was fortunately introduced to this song. Check it out!
Our Orthodox is the moniker of Los Angeles resident Neal Harris who recently released his first self-titled album. Does the album artwork style look familiar? Yes? No? Well, keen eyes might notice a similarity in record artwork of Okkervil River. Why? Because they both were created by the hands of William Schaff. However, the similarities between Our Orthodox and Okkervil River reach much deeper than just the artwork; the lay in the sound as well.

Our Orthodox brings music back to its sincerity and authenticity. Like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, the most you will hear on the album, with exception of the first song, is pure acoustic guitar, vocals that sound as if they are sung directly to you through your speakers, and occasional percussion. Just some good ole' country jams. However, the album follows a story of, according to his synopsis, a young man whose own distaste for religion conflicts with his love for a genuinely spiritual girl.

So, what we got here is a return to music in its purest and most basic form. No pretentious vocals and no excessive sounds or instruments. Just a boy and his guitar. Harris manages to avoid the common mistakes of beginning one-man projects by simply recording what’s in his heart and not what he feels others want to hear. So let him tell his story, let him explain how he can't listen to songs from his golden age on "My Records". His blood is thin and his heart is too small he proclaims, but by the end of this album you'll notice that his heart is quite big.

A couple weeks ago I came across a song called “Death Cream” by a band called Sonny and the Sunsets. I began listening to the song and was immediately hooked. The song starts with a lethargic and sunny plastered guitar strumming along with a simple drum beat. Eventually a piano and bass slyly creep in and this folky jam is created. Sonny Smith, lead singer and founder of the band, begins singing about a small tube of cream he finds in his car and how he puts it on his arm. After applying himself with the cream he decides to take his little tube and “spread it all around”. “De-De-De! De-De-De ! De-De-Death Cream!” is what is eventually heard.

This incredibly humorous yet eerie anecdote is a perfect example and feel of what Sonny and the Sunsets are all about: clever, witty lyrics, good ole’ simple folk jams and all around fun. With their debut album “Tomorrow is Alright”, released under Soft Abuse Records, they sprinkle each one of these characteristics into every one of their songs. For example, on “Planet of Women”, Sonny sings about his experience on a planet where “all the men were slaves” and “dressed up in chains” and a queen who goes by the name of Queen I-Like-It-Like-That. Other songs like “Stranded”, “Bad Vibes and Evil Thoughts” and “Strange Love” all contain catchy, easy-going melodies with rather simple but sharp lyrics.

Tomorrow is Alright is a straight-up summer album, musically and lyrically. It is very accessible and will more than likely put you in a good mood. Not to mention it features members of Thee Oh Sees, the Fresh & Onlys, Citay, and Kelley Stoltz on the album. The album is out now and a 7’’ EP from Future Stress Recordings is available in black or blue-yellow vinyl. The EP features three unreleased but just as good (trust me) songs as well as “Stranded” from their LP. Free digi-download codes are included and for a dollar more you can snag a super-limited comic book penned and illustrated by Sonny himself! All of this for under 10 bucks man. Pretty sweet.
