One of the more popular questions we get asked from time to time is how do we come up with new diaper cake designs. Well the truth of the matter is that the customer is our guide. For example, if someone knows exactly what they may want then it is our job to bring their idea to reality, a challenge we gladly welcome.

But as often times is the case, they usually have a color or theme in mind and then rely on our expertise to do the rest. Anything can serve as an inspiration, from an adorable outfit like the ladybug dress shown above or a fun invitation, a favorite place etc.

The best inspiration though, is the Mom to be herself. We earnestly try to get each diaper cake as personal as possible and for that we love to learn a little bit about the gift recipient. Answers to questions like what's her general style i.e is she modern or traditional ? Even the music she is listening to on her ipod can be an important design guide.

We are absolutely in our element when we get custom orders because we get a chance to try out new ideas and it allows for more customer interaction which is always great. We do afterall owe some of our most popular diaper cake lines to custom order requests. It was a memorable customer named Kristen who in October 2006 asked us to design a diaper cake to match the Mod Mom baby shower she was throwing for her sister. We bought a few of the Mod Mom items to observe and then decided to highlight the main features of this modern baby shower theme including the bold dots and the chic design.

We had a lot of fun creating this custom order Turtle Diaper cake this past week. Believe it or not,even though we have to date made over a thousand diaper cakes, with countless custom designs,this was actually our very first turtle diaper cake, so it was very special.

This diaper cake was made with 45 Pampers Swaddlers ,a 2 pc boutique baby outfit , 1 baby fork, 1 baby spoon, 1 baby washcloth, 1 8 oz baby bottle and 1 pair baby socks. It was topped off with an oh so plush Turtle toy that will make a great keepsake for years to come.

The Tropical Trendy Baby Shower Collection at Toodles Gifts

Ok, so according to the calenders summer is not technically here yet. However, it is memorial day weekend, kids are almost on holidays, its 80 degrees outside, pools are opening, grills are fired up,and every magazine is offering swimsuit tips. Let's face it winter is now a distant memory and we are now in full fleshed summer mode.

What is really great about summer is that everything thing and everyone goes outside. For those hosts who are planning,it is important to know that baby showers are no exception. In fact , summer showers are arguably the most fun because you can actually make the entire season your theme and seize the opportunity to make your party fun, festive and colorful.

One great theme to consider is the Tropical Trendy Baby Shower Theme. As Mom to be nears the end of her pregnancy, there is probably nothing more that she would like than to be whisked away to a relaxing tropical retreat. But with the real option probably a financial impossibility for most, not to mention being against doctor's orders, you can give that special Mom the next best thing and bring the islands to her.

There are so many advantages to using the tropical baby shower theme including the fact that you have many vibrant colors to choose from. This wide array of colors makes it ideal for baby showers where gender is unkown. This neutrality also makes this fun theme great for co-ed showers.

From the guest invitations that you can send in a bottle ,to the fruit smoothies you can serve up as refreshment,there are so many little things you can do to make your theme come alive.

Another bonus to having a tropical soiree is the fact that it can be very budget friendly. For party hosts,alot of your usual summer home decor typically put in place already can be incoporated into the shower. The freshly planted flower garden or the newly cleaned pool can serve as a geat backdrop for your event. On the actual day, greet guests with an inexpensive hawaiian lay found at most party stores or simply give them a flower from your garden as hair accessories. Again, the possibilites are endless.

You may decide to make it a general tropical theme or, do as we would here at Toodles Gifts and add an even more personal touch. Find out if Mom to be has a favorite destination that she either has been to or would like to visit and then make that specific place the shower theme.

For example, our favorite tropical spot is Jamaica. A very simple and easy way to pull off a Jamaican baby shower would be to play reggae music at the shower. This would immediately set the tone for the arriving guests as they are welcomed into a fun filled, rhythmic affair. In fact, there are some really great Bob Marley songs that would work well at showers including, "I wanna love you" and "One Love".We would include some Jamaican food, even if it is not a complete entree, (bearing in mind Mom to be probably can't handle spicy food) , just serve your food on home made palm tree placemats and you'll have the same great effect. You get the idea, have fun!

What about shower games and activities you may ask? Well here's an idea, have the guests pad themselves with a pillow to mimic Mom's pregnant belly and then have them all play calypso limbo. The aim would be to see who can go the lowest in their current "pregnant state". Can't you just picture the laughs!!

You get the point, by selecting just the right theme, you have so many ways to create a fun , personal and memorable baby shower, so go on...let your creativity be your guide.
