I have two reasons for this post.  First to show you the difference between an impact driver and a drill/driver.  Second to show you how well the newest lightweight compact units can work for you.

The new lithium tools are so much lighter and smaller than tools of even two years ago that many people don’t believe these tools can possibly be strong enough to do real work. Because of that I choose two of the smallest and lightest lithium tools available for this comparison.

Small & Light Weight

The  Craftsman NEXTEC 12 Volt Lithium Drill/Driver Model 11812 and the  Craftsman NEXTEC 12 Volt Compact Impact Driver Model 17428 are about as light as you can get.  The drill/driver and the impact are about half the weight of the 4 year old DeWalt drill in the picture below.   The 12 volt lithium batteries in these tools are interchangeable with the Craftsman Hammerhead Auto Hammer and Multi-Tool.

Thank you Sears for letting me use a 11812 and 17428 for this comparison. I own a NEXTEC multi-tool, but not these. I am still using the 16 volt Craftsman lithium drill/drivers I bought a year and a half ago.

Tools Used

I used my own spade bits, ships auger and Milwaukee Quik-Loc Bit set. If you like any of these tools you can order them at the end of this article.

I threw my Dewalt “Compact” into the picture so you can get a size comparison.  The Dewalt was a light drill four years ago and weighs in a 5.8 lbs.

Let’s begin.  The first video shows the NEXTEC Drill/Driver boring a hole using a 1/2 inch auger bit.   Ships augers are designed to cut fast and at slow speed so the drill is in the low range.  As you can see 185 inch lbs is plenty of power to drill this hole.

The second video is another test for the drill.  I intentionally over-drove the screw into the wood to again show you the power of these small drills.  This drill has a clutch that you can adjust so you can drive a screw and have the drill stop before it damages the wood like it did in this example.

This next video shows a comparison between the drill/driver and the impact driving screws.  While the drill/driver does the job, you can see the impact driver is faster and you have complete control setting the screw. If you are building a deck or other job where you have a lot of screws to put in the impact driver is the way to go.

This next video shows a comparison between the drill/driver and the impact removing screws.  Here is where the impact really shows it’s speed.  Watch how fast it removes the screw.  With speeds up to 2400 rpm the impact makes short work of this task.   I have also found that when using an impact to remove screws I don’t break as many off as I do using a drill/driver.

This last video shows a drill/driver and the impact driver using a spade bit.  As you can see the drill is faster.  Everyone runs their drill on high speed when drilling with a spade bit but using it this way takes a lot of power and I know of more than one drill that was “smoked” because the spade bit got stuck in the hole.

If you notice the drill stops part way through and I have to let go of the speed trigger and try again.  THIS IS A NORMAL SAFETY FEATURE FOR LITHIUM DRILLS! Instead of over loading the drill motor and burning it out, the new lithium drills will shut off before that happens.  Usually you just release the trigger and try again and the drill will finish the job.  If the bit is stuck and you repeat this a few times most of the lithium batteries will shut down completely.  Don’t bring them back to the store ………………. just let the battery sit for a while and put the back on the charger.  It will reset and you are ready to go again.

This article covers homeowner and professional Security and regular screwdriver bit sets.

Gone are the days when you needed three slotted screwdrivers and three Phillips screwdrivers to remove just about any screw.  Today there are many different types of screwheads including Phillips, Slotted, Phillips ACR®, Robertson, Slotted, Pozidriv®, Povidriv ACR®, French Recess (BNAE), Socket Head (Allen) standard and tamper resistant, Square Access, Torx® standard and tamper resistant, Torx Plus®, Spanner tamper resistant, Torq-Set®, Torq-Set Plus®, Tri-Wing®, Tri-Wing ACR®, Hi-Torque®, and Mortorq®

Manufactures are using all these types of screw heads for basically three reasons:  Automated Assembly, Safety and Security

Automated assembly.  Today’s manufactures use robots and automated assembly lines to build most of the products you buy.  The old slotted screw just doesn’t work for high speed assembly.  The Philips head is a lot easier to insert and remove than the slotted head but it still is not a good choice for automation.  Each of the types of screw heads listed above has it’s own advantages, but that is outside the scope of this article.  You just want to know where to get the screwdriver to remove the screw.

Safety.  Fifty years ago when the toaster quit you grabbed a screwdriver and a pencil eraser took the bottom off the toaster and cleaned the contacts with the eraser.  Then somebody tried doing that and forgot to unplug the toaster before they tore it apart.  Their surviving relatives sued the toaster manufacture and today when you go to open the toaster you are confronted with warning stickers and screw heads you have never seen before. If there is a screw head you don’t recognize preventing you from tearing your appliance apart there just may be a good safety reason why.

Security. Today there are many reasons why the manufacture doesn’t want you to go inside your device.  You see the big warning sign “No user serviceable parts inside”  For example, with most of todays electronics can easily be ruined by you touching the components.  Just the static that you build up walking around the house is enough to ruin the insides of most computers, flat panel TV’s and appliances if you touch the circuit board or components without proper grounding.  Keeping you out of the unit and only letting a properly trained service tech in can be very cost effective for many of today’s manufactures.

Another example, a lot of the small engine carburetors today have adjustment screws with no slots.  The manufactures have EPA qualified these engines based on a specific fuel mixture and to keep the government happy (and your lungs) these carburetors are set at the factory and no one really wants you messing with them without the proper measuring equipment.

I Still Want To Get Inside!

OK, with the exception of the screws on your phone, (it takes a #6 Torx) the easiest way to get the proper bit to remove that strange screw is to buy a set of bits.  Trying to find a screwdriver with the exact style you need can be a very, very frustrating experience.  Buy a bit set and be done with hunting for the proper screwdriver.

This article is going to cover what makes a quality pliers and I wil use slip-joint pliers as the example. But it doesn’t matter if it is a slip joint, pump, tongue & groove, arc joint, needle nose, or long nose pliers. Good quality pliers all have the same characteristics.

Bright & shiny is not always good.

Many cheap pliers look great. They are usually bright silver in color. If you look closely at the cheap pliers underneath the shiny coating the metal is rough.

There are no smooth surfaces anywhere on the pliers. A quality pliers usually has machined surfaces on at least two sides. While some quality pliers are plated (usually a bright silver color) many of them are not. Some of the best pliers are not plated at all. The parts are usually a dark gray and if you look at them after a few years they will turn to a deep brown. Most quality pliers will rust if left outside. The rust doesn’t harm them. Just scrub them with a scotch-brite pad and rub on a light oil. Even if they get really rusty you can sand them with sand paper to remove the rust.

So how do you tell a quality pliers from a cheap pair.

1. The teeth on the jaws are sharp.

For example, Let’s say you want to take the end off a curtain rod. You decide to use a slip-joint pliers to hold the round part of the rod while you unscrew the end. With a cheap pliers it will slip and ruin the finish on the rod. With a quality pliers it will grip the rod and not slip. Yes it will make some score marks, but they will be small and you won’t see them when the rod is put back up.

The easy way to understand this is to go to your favorite hardware or big box store and look at the cheapest slip-joint pliers and the most expensive ones. On the most expensive pair the teeth or grooves on the jaws will be sharp to the touch. The teeth  are not sharp enough to cut you but they will be noticeably sharper than the cheap pair. You want the teeth sharp so they will grip the item you are using them on. The good pair will grip well and let you hold the item without gouging or scraping it. Yes, pliers will leave a mark on the item they are grabbing, but a good pair will grip well and not slip easily and mar the surface. DON’T USE A PLIERS ON ANYTHING YOU DON’T WANT SCRATCHED.

A good pair usually has ground sides.  They don’t look as “pretty” but the grinding actually make the edges of the tool better. Click on the quality pliers picture to see an example of the grind marks.

2. The hinge joint is close tolerance.

On a solid joint pliers like a needlenose grab a handle in each hand and try to wiggle the joint. A quality pliers will have no “wiggle” in the joint. If you have an older set and the pliers get stiff and hard to open and close, spray the joint with a penetrating oil like “LiquidWrench” or “PB Blaster”. Leave it set for a few hours and it will loosen up.  If the joint gets “loose” replace the pliers.

On slip joint pliers you can “slip” the joint which increases the capacity range of the pliers. The joint of a quality slip-joint pliers will also be tight like a solid joint pliers. The joint should “slip” easily when you move it intentionally, but not be “sloppy.”  A sloppy joint will slip when you are least expecting it and pinch your hand.

3. Handles

On a quality pliers, the handles have a knurled grip or a cushion grip. The knurling should be rough, but not sharp. In other words, the handles should fit your hand. If they are not comfortable, you won’t want to use them. Cushion grips are molded to the handle. Don’t buy a pliers where the cushion grips are slipped on. They will slip off when you try to use the pliers.

If you do automotive work where you get everything greasy, stay away from the cushion grip handles.  Many cushion grips get slippery with oil and grease on them.  You can actually grip a good bare metal handle like the Crescent 6 pliers better and they are easy to clean.  If you get them really dirty they clean easily with a little diesel fuel (parts cleaner) and Dove dish detergent.

4. Size

Slip-Joint pliers come in three basic sizes. 6 inch, 8 inch and 10 inch.  While the 6 inch is the most common you may find the 8 inch is the best pliers for you.  Even for small hands the 8 inch size gives you good leverage to do most of the tasks and it is small enough to fit in your kitchen drawer or toolbox.  Contractors and farmers like the 10 inch for rebar work and fence repairs.

Stay away from straight handle pliers.

Most pliers have an arch in the handle.  This arch gives you the most torque  for almost any task.  Stay away from the straight handle slip-joint pliers.  I tend to pinch my hand (it hurts) more often with this type.

A few good choices for you.

Lastly, Don’t go for hype.  There are many new pliers introduced each year with fancy names and advertised as the “best” pliers.   If it is advertised as the best invention since the wheel … it probably isn’t.

I purchased this saw in October 2007.  The saw in this review is the silver version.  Since then Sears has changed the color scheme to black and silver. I will go through the changes they made with the new color scheme.

Introduction:

I was unsure if  this saw would meet all my requirements but I was willing to give it a try.   I had to install two arches in my kitchen, remodel an area around the washer/dryer in the basement and I wanted to build my wife a potting bench.  I had about 3000 board feet of 1 x 10 and 1 x 12 long boards that I wanted to use for building Adirondack chairs. My table saw is set in a corner and I was tired of having to move it every time I wanted to cross cut a long board.  This article goes through my experience with this saw for the last two years.

Warning: I included in this article all of my expectations, concerns, fixes and positives about this saw over the last two years.  So it’s pretty long.

Setting up the Saw:

I wanted a saw that would do the normal cross-cutting for home remodeling and a saw that could do exact finish work for a furniture items I wanted to build.  So, I was very critical of the Model 21237 and the tolerances of the cuts it could make.  I knew the $600 dollar sliders would meet my expectations but I wasn’t sure if this one could meet them.  At $250 retail I was a little cautious and took a lot of extra time checking the tolerances and going through the mechanical attributes of the saw.  After assembling the saw, the first thing I did was anchor the saw to my work bench. I had a friend buy a slider and broke it in half on the first cut he made by pulling the head forward and having it tip off his workbench. So from him I knew that sliders must be bolted down.  I planned on using it out in the garage in the summer and bringing down the basement in the winter so I used threaded inserts in the table and 1 1/2 inch long 1/4 inch bolts and washers. I mounted it so the front feet were near the front of the bench with the slider hanging over the edge. That way I could easily adjust the horizontal angle without banging my knuckles.

One item they changed with the new black and silver 21237 is the location of the feet and mounting holes.  The front feet are the same, but the rear feet are longer and protrude another 2 inches to the rear.  They also eliminated the wire support on the bottom rear of the saw. These positive changes make the saw easier to mount and more stable overall.

The next thing I did was check the accuracy of the fence. I knew about one out of every 1000 saws or so had a warped fence. If the fence is not perfectly parallel you can never get accurate cuts. The bevel and angle markings will be off and the saw will drive you crazy. I used a good engineer’s rule to check the accuracy and it was dead on.

Then I checked the 90 and 45 degree detents. I set the saw at 90 degrees, lowered the blade and then locked it down (there is a button on the back of the head to lock in the down position for transport) Then used and engineer’s square to check the angle and then repeated this step at 45 degrees left and 45 degrees right. Everything was correct right out of the box.

Time to Make My First Cut:

I took a 1 x 6 oak plank that I knew had a straight edge and using the engineer’s square, made a 90 degree mark. I turned on the saw’s laser and then placed the board on the saw and using the screw clamp that came with the saw clamped it down. I put my mark where I thought the blade would cut using the laser.

I made my first cut using the way I was taught to use a slider. Pull the saw all the way forward, turn it on, lower the saw, and then push the saw through the board. I missed my mark by 1/16 of an inch. After playing with the saw, I realized I should line up the mark with the RIGHT edge of the laser mark, not the left side as I had done. (After using the saw for two years I now realize that lasers are just guides. If you are cutting 2 x 4’s they are accurate enough but if you want exact measurements you need to lower the blade to your mark and then set your clamps to that.)

The supplied work clamp is too much work. It takes too much time to adjust it, tighten it down, and then release it for the next cut. I set up a Kreg Bench Clamp to the left of the saw and I use that when I want to clamp my work. I move the clamp to the basement with the saw in the winter.

Ok, so far so good. EXCEPT the saw did not cut all the way through the board! It left about 1/4 inch on the backside of the cut.  After looking at the saw and playing with it I saw that even though the fence was lined up perfectly, whoever aligned it at the factory had pulled the fence all the way forward in the adjusting slots.  I thought about returning the saw, but before I did I decided to play around a little.

I went to loosen the four screws that hold the fence.  They are hex (Allen).  No problem, I have one of those.  When I went to loosen the screws though, they were so tight that I couldn’t get them loose.  I was afraid if I put to much effort on them I would strip out the heads and then as far as I was concerned the saw would be junk.  So I found my old impact screwdriver (it’s the kind you hit with a hammer and it gives a little twist to the screw.)  The screws easily loosened with that.

So I moved the fence all the way to the back, and the used my engineer’s square to align it back up with the blade.  I was careful to tighten the screws evenly so I didn’t warp the fence.

I checked the new black and silver saw and the fence was in the right position.  It will cut correctly out of the box.  I also checked it for square and it was right on. It still has the same hard-to-use clamp. I wish they would supply the same clamp they have on the MiterMate.

My Second Cut:

I made my second cut and everything worked perfectly.  I dropped the blade to my mark and then clamped the board and cut it.  The saw cut all the way through the board, the cut was right on my carefully placed mark.  Everything looked good except the face of the cut.

I realized that the blade Sears supplied with the saw would not work for me.  It works ok for normal construction and remodeling tasks but I wanted a perfect cut everytime.  I headed back to Sears and bought an 80 tooth Freud Blade.  This blade cuts cleanly and is so good on hardwoods that I never need to sand the edge.

Since then I have found a better blade.  When the Freud blade wears out I will replace it with a Tenryu Saw Blade.  To most of you these blades may seem expensive, but the quality of cuts they produce are worth every penny especially when you want an accurate cut with almost no tearout no matter what wood you are cutting.

What I learned about the saw over the last two years:

Pro: I use this saw just about everyday.  I have made at least 5000 cuts with it.  I have cut everything from 1/4 plywood, pine, hard maple, and plexiglass.  I even used it to cut a 3 1/2 inch walnut log into 1/2 inch slabs for coasters.  It will easily cut two stacked 2 x 12’s and a Menards 4 x 4 (3 1/2 in)

Pro: I keep it tied (screwed) to a workbench and move it to and from the basement twice a year. I am careful with the saw when I move it, because I know I could damage it by throwing it around and dropping it.  To treat a sliding compound miter saw with respect and care is just common sense to me.  When I read other reviews about other people breaking their saw, I wonder if the problem is the saw or the way they are treating it.

The best way to move this slider is to lock the blade down, slide the saw all the way to the front of the slider and lock the slider thumbwheel located behind and under the slides.  It then easily balances on the front and rear handhold. On the new black and silver version Craftsman moved the slider thumbwheel up and on the side of the slide so it is easy to reach and use.

Pro: As part of my routine I check the accuracy of my saws at least every six months. (my table saw needs adjustment every so often.) The Model 21237 I have has never needed adjustment since the initial setup.  I even “caught” some hard maple in it a few times (the wood I was sawing was too short and kicked out of the saw) and the alignment stayed perfect.

Pro & Con: I leave my laser on most of the time now.  I turned it off and on for the first year every time I used the saw and I noticed the switch starting to fail.  Instead of loosing the switch, I just leave it on.  I also have a switch box out in the garage where I supply power to my router, vacuum, miter saw and belt sander.  I have it wired so only power goes to one device at a time (for my safety) so the laser does get turned off, I just don’t use the switch on the saw to do it.  On the new 21237 Craftsman installed a sealed switch that should last a lot longer than the old rocker switch.

Con: (This has been fixed with the new saw) Where the laser is located on the saw the sawdust blows directly over it.  When cutting pine the sticky sawdust covers the laser and you have to clean it all the time. My model 21237 is the all silver one.  On the new 21237 Craftsman moved the laser up out of the way of the sawdust and enclosed it in a more durable housing. It shouldn’t collect as much sawdust.

Con: Dust collection.  This saw is one of the “normal” homeowner saws as far a dust collection is concerned.  Very little sawdust makes it into the little dust collection bag.  Even with a shop vac hooked up to the saw instead of the bag most of it is spread all over the work area.  I compensated out in the shop by placing a 12 inch “wall” around the backside of my bench.  This  wall keeps the sawdust from blowing off the back of the bench and falling down where it is hard to vacumn up.  I plan on placing a dust collection hood behind the saw when I install a permanent collection system this summer.  I can’t see any changes on the new version so expect most of the sawdust to be everywhere but in the bag.

If dust collection is a concern for you, I would suggest buying a Professional Sliding Compound Miter Saw.  The professional versions all have a much better collection system than the homeowner versions.

Con: Kick.  I didn’t realize it when I bought this saw but I now do.  All the direct drive homeowner saws “Kick” when you turn them on.  The motor spins up so fast and there is so much torque that the handle kicks in your hand.  If you are not expecting it you may let go of the saw in shock the first time.  This is normal and just something to get used to.  Professional saws use a belt drive, soft start feature.  It takes a couple more seconds for the blade to come up to speed and this produces a lot less kickback than the direct drive homeowner models.  On the new version Craftsman installed a thumb-lock for the switch.  As a safety feature it is very easy to use and actually keeps you from inadvertently starting the saw with just your hand resting on the handle or sliding the saw into position. (yes, I’ve done it myself a few times)

Con: The extension wings work well as a work support.  They extend much farther than the wire supports found on most saws.  But I never used the stops that were on them because I found with the one locking screw on one of the two rods the stop would move over time.  I either couldn’t tighten the screw down enough or the wings would wiggle just a little.  It was ok for remodeling work, but for cabinetry and fine woodworking it was unacceptable.   The revised version fixes this.  There are two tightening screws on each side and the steel on aluminum screech you used to hear when moving the wings is gone.  Craftsman installed nice bushings to eliminate the sound.

Pro: Overall I really like the Model 21237 saw. It cuts accurately and consistently for me.  I have used it a lot and it is holding up well.  There is very little sign of wear on the dual slide rail system and all of the hinge points and moving pieces show no signs of wear.  I feel I have gotten a good saw at a great value.  I would recommend this saw to anyone who needs a slider and is a great first saw for everyone who thinks they need a miter saw.  It will do all of the miter and cross cut tasks for most of us.  In addition the slider really is nice.  Being able to cut up to a 12 inch board makes this saw many times more useful than a traditional miter saw.

The new version of this saw fixes all of the cons I had with my version except the sawdust issue.

Yesterday I was installing a curtain rod in the kitchen. I asked my wife for a flat bladed screwdriver and she reached into her tool drawer and handed me one. After 30 seconds of frustration I handed it back to her and went out to the garage, grabbed a different screwdriver from my toolbox, returned to the kitchen and finished the job in no time.

Why did I get a different screwdriver? Simply, the one she gave me was junk. When I put the blade of her screwdriver into the slot of the screw and went to turn it, the screwdriver immediately jumped out of the slot. I pushed harder on the screwdriver on the second try and all it did was round off the edges of the screw slot. After I got one of my screwdrivers from my toolbox I was able to remove the screw easily even with the slot on the screw damaged from the first screwdriver.

The difference was the quality of the screwdriver. The one she had came from some no-name home toolkit (like the ones in pink toolkits). It was just a steel rod with an end stamped to look like a flat blade and a plastic injection molded handle. The screwdriver that I had was made from a forged steel rod, the tip was ground to an exact tolerance and designed to grip the inside edge of the screw slot. The handle was molded onto the shaft of the screwdriver and was made of a shatter resistant plastic. There was also a rubber covering (cushion grip) over the plastic handle that allowed me to easily grip the screwdriver and turn out the screw.

Screwdrivers are one of the most important items in your toolbox. When you need to use it, you need to use it correctly and it needs to do the job correctly. There is nothing more frustrating to the homeowner than trying to remove a screw and have the screwdriver strip out the head. Buying a quality screwdriver is important for just this fact.

Here a few things to look for when selecting a quality screwdriver.

It doesn’t matter if the screwdriver has a flat blade, Phillips, Torx, or square point end.

1.  First, most consumer manufacturers make two or more grades of screwdrivers. Even if the name is one you trust like Craftsman be aware of this fact. The red, blue, and clear handled ones at Sears are not the same quality as the red and black handled professional line.  If you want long lasting screwdrivers select from the professional grade line or buy from a manufacture like Klein that only makes professional tools.

2.  A quality screwdriver has a tip that is forged steel and ground to precise tolerances for an exact fit on the screw. Many of the good screwdrivers have a hardened tip. (the tip is a different color usually a flat black or flat gray

3.  The handles are made of a shatter resistant plastic. The shaft has large flanges inside the handle to hold it securely

4.  I prefer a cushion grip handle (and most of you will too). The cushion grip is a rubber sleeve that fits over the plastic handle. It makes the handle larger and easier to grip.

5.  Be aware of the warranty. Many homeowners abuse their screwdrivers. They use them to open paint cans, pound on them, use them as chisels and digging tools. They also use the wrong size screwdriver and twist the tips of the flat bladed ones and round the ends off the Phillip’s ones. If you break a screwdriver how do you get it replaced? Most manufactures today will only warranty screwdrivers for defects and will not warranty them for abuse. By purchasing a quality screwdriver you at least have a tool that when abused will last longer that the cheap ones. Craftsman is one of the few that will replace a Craftsman screwdriver for any reason.

Ten years ago it was harder for the typical homeowner to buy quality tools. You had to find a store that carried the specific brand you were looking for and most of the time you had to order and wait for a tool. Today, if you are reading this article on a computer, you have a much better access to quality tools. You can easily order them through Sears, Amazon or many other places on the web.

I’ve selected three grades of tools for you that I recommend.  My selections are based on my many years of using tools both around the home and professionally.

A full set of electricians tools. This would make a good set for a home that will last a lifetime (my set I bought in 1972) By the way the adjustable wrench in this kit is the only true parallel jaw “cresent” wrench I know of.

DO’S AND DON’T WHEN USING SCREWDRIVERS

1.  Don’t hold the work in one hand while using the screwdriver with the other. If the screwdriver slips out of the slot you will cut yourself. (a trip to the emergency room!)
2.  Don’t use a screwdriver with rounded edges or tips; it will slip and cause damage to the work or yourself. (another trip to the emergency room!)
3.  Don’t use a screwdriver near a live wire or for electrical testing. (Unless you like having your heart restarted with the paddles!)
4.  Don’t use a screwdriver to check a storage battery or to determine if an electrical circuit is live. (electrical burns are not fun. another trip to the emergency room!)
5.  Don’t use a screwdriver for prying, punching, chiseling, scoring, or scraping. (another trip to the emergency room!)
6.  Use an offset screwdriver in close quarters where a conventional screwdriver cannot be used.
7.  Don’t use pliers on the handle of a screwdriver to get extra turning power. Some larger screwdrivers have a portion of the shank just below the handle that looks like a nut that is specifically designed for that purpose.
8.  Don’t expose a screwdriver blade to excessive heat as it may reduce the hardness of the blade. (Don’t use it to stir your campfire coals)
9.  Don’t use a screwdriver for opening paint cans or stirring paint. (that will break the tip)
10.  Don’t use a screwdriver with a split or broken handle.  (another trip to the emergency room!)
11.  Keep the screwdriver handle clean; a slippery handle is apt to cause an accident. (another trip to the emergency room!)
12.  A screwdriver should never be used as a pry bar. If it is over-stressed in this manner, the blade might break and send a particle of steel into the operator’s arm or perhaps even an eye.

Choice is great but sometimes it can be overwhelming.  With over 65 pieces, accessories and kits available in the Craftsman C3 19.2 volt  line, it can a real challenge to find and pick the tools that are right for you.  On top of the huge selection,  if you go to Sears.com or your local Sears you WILL NOT find all of the C3 19.2  items.  Some items are labeled wrong on the website and the stores do not carry all of the items.

This article is an attempt to organize the line for you.  Scroll down if you want to get right to the tools. For the thousands of you who already own a Craftsman C3 19.2 volt system you can see if your favorite drill or light is still available or if it has been upgraded to a better model.  I’ll also tell you about the gems and lead bricks in the line and let you in on a few new tools Sears says are coming soon!  Warning! This is one of the longest articles I have ever written.  It will take you a while to get through it and see everything available.

What is a “C3″?

C3 is Craftsman’s homeowner line of 19.2 volt cordless power tools.  The line is one of the most extensive in the home repair and home improvement industry and for most of us the best value for the money. The Craftsman C3 19.2 volt line of cordless tools has been going through quite a few revisions and updates in the last few months.  In light of the changes and new items coming out it’s time to review the entire line.

The best feature of this line is there are over 32 individual tools that all use the same 19.2 battery. (with many more to come in 2010)

The second best feature is Craftsman is dedicated to upgrading the line as new battery and motor technology becomes cost effective.  They are intent on keeping the same battery “platform” as far into the future as I can see.

The third best feature is you can order your new item online and in many cases walk into your nearest Sears store within the hour and pick the item up.  Right from your computer you can see if they have the 19.2 volt tool you want in stock.  If they don’t, you can order it, and pick it up when it comes in.  No need to make a special trip to the store to see if they have it and no need to make a trip just to order it if they don’t.

Is The C3 19.2 volt Line The Best? or do you really need a MACK dump truck when a good pickup does the job most of the time?

No.  Simply stated the C3 line is not the best line of cordless tools (just like a dump truck is better at hauling dirt than a pickup).  There are other lines of cordless tools out there that are more rugged (and expensive) But it is the best value for homeowners, tinkers and many repair techs. Other multi-tools lines of cordless tools like the Makita LXT line focus on the construction trades.  For example, many of the tools in the Makita line you would never need (concrete vibrator) or only need once (autofeed screwdriver) as a homeowner.  I personally like the Model# 2601-22 Milwaukee drill better than the Craftsman Compact Lithium-Ion Drill / Driver  Model 17310 , but the Milwaukee is much more expensive and the batteries only fit that drill and an impact driver (yet).  The Craftsman C3 19.2 batteries fit all the cordless tools I may want in the near future.

The 19.2 volt line is even a good value for contractors and builders who need a cordless tool, but don’t need to use it 10 hours a day, everyday.  An HVAC contractor recently told me: “I have about 40 of the 19.2 drills and they are very cost-effective for me.  My guys don’t use a drill that often, but they are really hard on them.  They throw them around, drop them, and lose them regularly.  The 19.2 volt is strong enough to do all their work and it doesn’t hurt my wallet as bad when I  have to replace them. ”  He was really excited about the new 4 place charger.

Another contractor wrote me after this article was published saying, “Some things about lines such as Craftsman C3 are inaccurate.  They say that they are not the best and only for home users.  I’m a contractor and I use the C3 line everyday.  I take offense to someone saying they arent rugged enough.”  I don’t have a problem saying, “Thank you, I was wrong!”

Please Note: I believe I got all the specs right.  The information here is taken from Sears.com, and I looked at the actual boxes at my local Sears.  But some of the online descriptions are so cryptic that I may have gotten a few wrong.  If you don’t get exactly what you want, just return the item within 90 days to your local Sears and order a different model.  If you find a mistake, please leave a comment at the end of the article and I will correct it. I will also update this list as new items come out. One last note: Sears changes this line a lot.  If the price you see on their website ends in 88 it is a closeout and is only available while supplies last.

It is in your best interest to purchase the Drill/Driver with battery and charger first.  (Or a combo kit IF it has the tools you need) The drills usually have the best sales.  The model 17310 gives you a great start with a light weight compact lithium battery and multi-chemistry charger so you can add on as you need to.

This is the best drill in the line right now. 340 in-lbs of torque. 1/2 in. single sleeve keyless chuck. 2-speed gear box. 24 position adjustable torque clutch. One Model 11371 Lithium Battery. One Model 25926 Multi-Chemistry Charger.  It is the new compact frame, lightweight, high torque model.  It compares nicely to the DeWalt and Milwaukee compact drills.  For 90% of us homeowners this is exactly the drill we need.  I highly recommend this drill.
