'Tis the Season..

Hello everyone! I found a little time in my week to post, and thought that since it's December...I would share a tiny bit of Christmas decor.

As I put up our tree, and brought out the season's decorations, I reflected on sentimental items and days gone by.

This season is a difficult season sometimes. This year we will be adding several loved ones to the list of those we remember and miss.

November in particular brought us some heartache as we lost not one but two very special people. While we miss them very much, we are grateful for the time we had, and know they would not want us to be sad at this time of year.

So, we carry on.

This year, because life has been so busy, my very special helper and I decided to keep the Christmas decor to a minimum.

My Boss and I....We work well together ... hahaha...

This is Ginger. We live in HER house.

She is the boss of everything that happens here.

She insists on being included in anything and everything I do, and because she is a senior citizen, and we know our time with her is limited, she gets to help.

We tested the lights... we sorted the decorations and chose the ones we would use...

She tested the old chair and checked to make sure it was just the right angle.

She must be satisfied with the finished result as she claimed her spot behind and under the tree. You can't see her, but she's in there snoring loudly.

I like a tree that is dressed in pretty sparkly things. This tree is my favorite as it is quite neutral and not over the top. The colors I used are pewter, sage and brushed gold.

I hope to put up another one that is a little more woodsy/natural, but just in case I don't get time to share...

Happy Thanksgiving American Friends!

Hey everyone!

Just popping on to say hi! I have been really busy these last few days, and don't have anything written and ready to share so I thought I'd send my regards to all who are celebrating this weekend!

Here in Canada our thanksgiving is just a memory as we celebrate a few weeks earlier than you all do.

I want to wish all of my American Friends a very safe and happy thanksgiving weekend!

I have been jumping from site to site and enjoying all of the tablescapes for the thanksgiving feast...and I am looking forward to seeing everyone's Christmas decor!

Saw it. Loved it. Made it! Zero Dollar Room Re-do

I love our little house. It's not a huge flashy house, but rather a 1950's farmhouse. We have been here now for just a little more than 8 years, and we love it.

From the moment we moved into this house, we have been on the run. Work, kids, life...just seemed to swallow us up! I did find time to repaint the whole house (the colors were disturbing when we moved in lol) and decorate the public areas of the house, but there never seemed to be enough time in my week to work on anything else. So the master bedroom was put on the back burner. I had told myself a million excuses....I don't know what I want, I might change the furniture, I was hoping for a different bed cover...we might renovate...just a whole lot of me telling myself it was okay to have a bedroom filled with leftover pieces and a mish mash of decor that was not thoughtfully placed...but rather set down and forgotten. So when I finally decided it was time...it was actually LONG overdue.

I totally forgot to do a decent before photo. So I dug around and found this one. It is an old photo of the day I made the blanket that you see on that bed. I had put it on the bed to test for size and had a little 'help'. I had taken it because my 'helper' was just so in love with that blanket that he refused to leave. Marty has since passed away so I am glad I took the photos of him that I did. I never took any pictures in this room...because who wants to see a drab space?

ANYWAYS...this is the gist of it. Two enormous old schoolhouse windows shoved behind the bed...I tossed the headboard I had in the trash and had intended to build a new one but never had the time, so I used those...(what the heck was I thinking???? lol)

This bedroom was BLAND. BORING. BLAH.

This room needed help but I could not decide what I wanted to do. I loved a lot of the different stuff I'd seen, and I just could not decide...I also have been burned by beautiful photos on the sales pages, but poor quality when the item arrives. I wasn't in the mood to be disappointed. So I just kept putting it off.

One day, I was online in one of my favourite groups and I saw a challenge to redo a room on a $0 budget. Just use what you have on hand...and see what you can create! I got excited. I was IN!

We have been in deep purge mode around here, getting rid of what we just don't want anymore, so I was excited to reclaim a few of my treasures that might have hit the chopping block. It was exciting to FINALLY be inspired to do a little makeover on my bedroom.

I did an assessment on the space and everything in it. I decided what was staying and what needed to find a new home.

First I moved my beautiful old school house windows. They are HUGE and they also hold a nice memory of my parents...so they stayed. I pushed them over to each side of the bed .

I then hung some of my bird cages above the bed. If you are a long time follower you know I love wire baskets, birdcages, old bikes....and well anything rusty, old, rustic and nostalgic feeling.

I then went to the storage shed and pulled out an old headboard that I found a few years ago in the old house my Cowboy grew up in. It is not in perfect condition, but it is perfect for my space. I LOVE the distressed metal...so I cleaned it up, sealed it and with a little help- popped it into place.

I decided that I wanted to layer the windows, so I hung some pictures on them.

So far so good- But that big heavy plaid fleece winter blanket that (I made a few years ago) we love so much, needs to be covered up. It is just not the look I want.

I pulled out all of the bedding and curtains and tossed them into the wash. I deep cleaned the entire space and then it was time to focus on that bedding.

I searched the internet for ideas...and then I saw it. The bedding style I wanted!

I could have just ordered it...but I had committed to the Zero Dollar Challenge....and I knew I could do something similar.

I was INSPIRED!!

YAY!!!

I am a girl who has taught herself to sew over the years, and actually had a little sewing business, I have bolts of all types of fabrics kicking around. I went to my stash, and pulled out the bolts of unbleached heavy cotton that I had on hand and went to work.

FIRST- I washed and preshrunk the entire bolt of fabric, so that I would not encounter any nasty surprises in the future. My fabric was extra wide but not wide enough so I sewed two long pieces together to make the base, and then cut and ruffled 4 different widths of the same fabric to create the layers of ruffles.

I even added a little row of lace to finish the top row. I then used the same fabric to make some pillow covers. The throw pillows are made from an old quilt and a couple scraps of fabric. (I do think I will add a few more pillows, but haven't had time to do it just yet)

It took over 10 meters of fabric and several days of trial and error- but I settled on my plan and got it done. I then created some pretty pillows, made myself some little curtains and added a few accessories and I was done! The first set of curtains I made for this room ended up being pulled out and set aside as it was just too much cotton...so I will be re-purposing them for another room. I liked the lighter weight and complimentary pattern of the brown and cream sheer plaid. I don't really need privacy curtains or black out curtains as we have a large cedar tree in front of the windows that offer privacy.

Guys- I just can't be happier with the finished project. Even my Cowboy loves the new space.

This room is not a big huge room. Every inch counts. It is now pretty, functional, cozy and comfortable.

I LOVE our master bedroom now and I am really quite pleased with how it all came together.

This little makeover cost me ZERO dollars. I used only what I had kicking around my house.

I am lucky that I had the fabric for the bedding and curtains kicking around, but it would be quite easy and inexpensive to recreate this bedding if you wanted to. The possibilies are endless...you could use a pretty quilt, and add ruffles made from coordinating bed sheets...you could dye the cotton to custom make a color scheme...use your imagination and make your perfect style!

I used bolts of cotton from a fabric shop, but as a girl who has a crush on canvas drop cloths, I think I could have used them to create this look as well!

I have used drop cloths for a lot of different things...but that is a post for another day...

The "Way" We "Live"

I recently had someone comment about the "way" we "live". Considering the source, I believe it was meant to be an insult- but it actually got me to thinking about the "way" we "live"! The more I thought about it, the more I realized perhaps it was an insult born from envy and it just made me feel bad. Not for the way my family lives- but bad for the person who made the comment in the first place.

Our home is not always magazine perfect and that's okay. We "LIVE" here. We make messes, we make memories and we LOVE our time together here. Our house is not flashy and filled with fancy expensive trinkets bought only because we are trying to keep up and illusion of grandeur, perfection or style. I don't DO trends...and most certainly don't do fads. You probably will never see me post about a viral anything.

I do practical I do antiques I do sentimental

I do family I do feelings I do functional

I do realistic I do humble I do authentic

I do modest I do handmade

We do US

...and after years of experiences and learning how to...

We DO happiness

Our house is not a place staged to show off the illusion of a perfect home filled with a perfect Stepford Family. This house is a home filled with things we love. Things we have collected in our travels, thinks I have made, things kids have made, things that make us feel good and remind us of memories made together. Our home is a modest, clean, warm, comfortable, inviting place that reflects who we are.

I have been working on my writing space, a bedroom, a sewing room, a studio room, and loads of other little projects, as well as spending time writing, and enjoying time with friends and family. Life is just so precious and can get quite busy around here.

I tend to hand write all of my posts before I put them into my computer. It has been quite some time since I regularly shared anything so it is taking me a little bit to gather my thoughts into articles. I have so much to say, that it is taking me a little more effort to be focused, and I have about 15 posts already partially written...so hopefully I will get everything finished and scheduled to share with you!

I'd also like to thank all of you who have sent me a few tips and tricks with the changes to this platform. I can say a LOT has changed and it is still challenging me to get my groove back. Any and all suggestions and tips are welcome! Just pop them into my comments and I will be certain to look at them all. I have my comments moderated at this time, so I can keep whatever ya'll say private if you like.

So to the one who gave me the beautiful comment about the "Way" we "Live"...thank you. I also hope that one day you will be as comfortable and authentically as happy as we around here are.

And So The Adventure Begins...

Hello there!

It's so good to see you all.

I have been MIA now for quite a long time and I think it's time to change that.

I really have missed my Tootsie Time, and when it came time to decide to renew my domain name, or to let it go...I spent a few days deciding what I wanted to do, and here we are! I am excited to resume sharing what living our best life looks like!

I have been getting emails and messages from lots of my followers asking where I am and if I am okay, or if I will ever be back...

Well that's a very loaded question.

One that I will simply answer with...I was surviving. I was healing and I was growing. Over the last 3 years a lot of things happened. Some good, some not so good and some just bad.

The last three years has brought a whole lot of challenges and much heartache to our family. In total we have lost 15 loved ones in this short span of time. We have lost several very close friends and family, in this time, and we are acutely aware of how fragile life really is. In the blink of an eye, anyone of us can be taken and there is nothing we can do about it. This made us appreciate everything and everyone who matters just a little more, and to walk away from people, things and situations that are not healthy for us.

It hasn't been ALL bad - There's also been a few very wonderful changes to our lives in the last 3 years.

We are empty nesters!

Our "little Busy" has graduated high school, finished her first year ( of 4 years) of college and has flown the coop! Busy is our youngest baby. She has been dating the sweetest young man for several years now and this summer they moved into their first home! They are all grown up now and doing adult things like mortgages and car payments, pet ownership...and they are knocking it out of the park! The cowboy and I could not be prouder of them.

My 'Georgie Girl' has graduated hairdressing school and is a very good little hairdresser, but she decided that it just wasn't filling her heart with joy or challenging her enough so she moved on to a new and fun career that she is really enjoying. She also has a really nice young man in her life...we are so proud.

Becoming an empty nester is one of those things every mom dreads but at the same time looks forward to. It is a bittersweet thing! It was either feel sorry for ourselves for raising strong independent and ambitious kids...or grab on and have some fun with it...so...we got our butts in gear and got to work.

The cowboy and I have been super busy with a full purge of anything we no longer need, want or have time for...and it has been incredibly satisfying. We donated, sold, tossed out and burned a LOT.

After the grand purge, I started deep cleaning, and catching up on things around the house that had not been done in a while. (because we just did not have the time) It was such a good feeling to get my house in order again, and somehow it helped my imagination to return. WHEW!

You see, my last three years have been filled with trauma. That trauma has affected my ability to imagine, or visualize projects the way I used to so easily do. It literally paralyzed my imagination. I was afraid it would never return, and was SO excited when ideas started to flow in my mind again. I can't even tell you how relieved I was. If I was able to cry, I probably would have. Yes...I lost my ability to shed any tears at all since mom and dads funeral. It will come. I just need to be patient.

We have begun to reclaim our lives. Find our joy and move forward. IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE GETTING BACK TO OURSELVES AGAIN.

We have walked away from so much drama and have focused ourselves on the beautiful things our lives have to offer. We are appreciating every single day.

I've started doing a lot of writing, designing, doing makeovers on rooms, refurbishing/ re-purposing furniture, and creating all kinds of things.

I am excited to eventually share some of these fun projects with you very soon.

Now, you guys need to be just a little bit more patient...I have been away from this for so long that a lot of things have changed and I need to relearn how to make posts!

I also need to update the look and feel of Tootsie Time, so there may be some test posts on the horizon lol

So stay tuned...there are some fun things coming!

Thank you for Thinking of ME!

Hey guys.

I just had to take a few minutes to post because I just cannot let what happened today go by without sharing. Sometimes the gardening community shows how loving and kind it can really be.

As you read in my last post, our family suffered a tremendous loss recently. Both of my parents (who, if you follow me regularly, were featured here several times) lost the fight with covid in December and it has been challenging to come to terms with for our family.

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from a gentleman named Mark. He is from England, but Tootsie Time was recently recommended to him to help him understand gardening in Canada.

Mark was touched by my post, and asked if he along with his Canadian counterparts could put together a box of seed packets for me to plant in honour of my mom and dad.

FIRST of all...I am HONORED that people in the UK even know I exist...much less that they consider me a good source of information!!! That is the highest flattery I could ever ask for!

SECOND of all...I am touched that he reached out to me and even offered such a beautiful gesture!

THIRD...The box of seeds that Mark and his colleagues here in Canada put together arrived today. I had just arrived home from checking on mom and dad's business and home. I was feeling a little down and this absolutely cheered me up.

Guys, I cannot even tell you how amazed I was when I opened this package.

My heart is SO full! There is a mix of herb, flower and vegetable seeds in this box...and it is FULL of all kinds of wonderful things!

I am just so touched that members of the garden community have reached out to me in such a generous and thoughtful way...THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart Mark and all the thoughtful people at Mr Fothergills in Canada and the UK!

I usually purchase many of my seeds from Mr Fothergills as they are very good quality, and have a huge selection to choose from in veggies, herbs and flowers.

I always have good results from their products. Knowing that the folks there are so kind makes this brand that much more of a favourite for me.

I look forward to finding the perfect spot, and planting something special in memory of my parents.

I don't know how to express what Mark's gesture meant to me, but I hope he can see how he touched my heart with his thoughtful gesture.

RIP Mom and Dad

Friends, I'm struggling to find my way through grief while trying to hang onto hope.

On December 7th 2021 our lives were forever changed.

My little household had, until then, eluded Covid.

We were happy and doing what we needed to do to get by in the world the way it is.

I had actually commented at how happy we were and how much I loved my life.

And then everything changed.

Not one, but both of my parents became seriously ill with the deadly covid virus and needed to be hospitalized.

We lost Mom on the 17th.

My sister and I were there with her as she took her last breaths and made sure she knew how much we love her.

On December 30th, again with me and my sister by his side, we also lost Dad.

The damage caused by covid was too great and we were forced to made the decision to say goodbye to them both.

There is some comfort in knowing that they are together forever in heaven, but their deaths have left a hole in our hearts.

My parents did everything together. They were rarely apart for more than a few hours. They were soulmates.

Our family has been devastated.

Their community is in a state of shock.

My dad was a very gifted mechanic. He was creative and fun loving and could fix almost anything. He loved nature, junkin, music and being silly. He and my mom were active in their community.

My Mom was so many things, a mother, daughter, sister, friend, grandmother…but what she was best know for was being an incredible business woman. She took a store that many would have walked away from and built it into a very successful enterprise.

Her business sense was inspiring to so many. Her store is known near and far and her contribution to the community will never be forgotten.

We will be holding onto all of the good memories of both mom and dad as we learn to live in a world without them in it.

This has been such a challenging time. Trying to balance grief and hope while going into autopilot to do things that need to be done regarding their home, and business.

So, needless to say, We have not made any new progress on the old house, and are waiting until things settle down to get started.

If there’s anything I have learned from all of this, it’s not to take anything for granted.

Tomorrow is not promised.

Be careful to always make sure your words are kind and that a person’s true character is revealed during times of crisis. There is NEVER an excuse for abuse.

Rest In Peace mom and dad. We love you and will miss you both.

Friends… I hope your family’s are safe and healthy. That you enjoy time together and appreciate every minute. Stay close to the ones who love you and love them back.

Life is incredibly short. Live your best life and lead with a gentle heart.

The Knotty Seat

In your mind, imagine the sound of a telephone ringing.

“Hello?”

“Hi…nothing important, just working out in the yard. ……….ok….see you in a few”

And off I went.

I arrived at my destination to see this: The tall one is my Dad…we call him Grampie…That little one…well…you guessed it…it’s Grammie…My mom.

They had to remove two huge trees that died and they wanted me to haul away the stumps. The old man next door to me wants them for his wood stove.

Lets just say that the “little one” was not a happy Grammie…she was ticked about the loss of those trees…Isn’t she stylin and gorgeous today? I told my kid not to get too close…was fearful she might be wild! hahahaha!

We loaded the first bunch to take to the guy next door. There would need to be two trips…for sure! These ones didn’t feel the least bit heavy. I was confident that I would be able to get this done quick and easy. Who would have thought this was gonna take a turn for the “silly”

I know what you are thinking….

I just KNOW what you are thinking.

You are asking yourself how the heck I can be surprised that anything take a turn for the “silly” when this man is involved!!!

I know…hahaha….I kinda laughed too when I caught myself!

The second load was stumps that had been cut so that if I wanted to use them for something in my gardens I could…if not I was supposed to drop them off for my neighbor to burn…with the exception of one piece. Ya…I said it…there was one piece that was reserved completely and totally just for me!

Scared yet???

THIS is that piece…it is the KNOTTY SEAT! Grampie made it JUST FOR ME!

See how happy the “short” one is that I have a Knotty seat??? Ya…Mother’s Day is just around the corner missy!!!

We finished loading my truck…and I must say…those stumps are HEAVY!

Grampie had to help this time…and we got smart and used a dolly.

Grammie is super human and she just carried hers…hahaha!

I tried my best to change the subject…I even tried the hey…look over there!!!…technique. It didn’t work…

..I got sent to the Knotty seat. It is too tall for my legs…and it is a tad crooked…makes for a slightly uncomfortable sit…but hey…it’s a knotty seat…

...at least the back is tall!!! hahahaha!

Grampie made sure there was room in my truck for the seat…and off we went! They followed me home to help me unload…”cuz they are fairly heavy” was the excuse...

I think they followed me home to make sure I kept the Knotty seat…ha ha ha!

I did keep quite a few pieces…I will find some place to put them…if not…my neighbor can have them.

Now I Just need to give some serious thought to find a spot for the knotty seat!

From this Not so secret location you will get a sneak peek at the changes I have made in my yard this weekend! I am using today to “tweek” them a little bit and get ready to share! WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE!!! oops!! My Bad…ha-ha

There is a little confusion that has come to my attention in the last couple of days, and I think it is important to clear it up!

Who ARE Grammie and Grampie and WHERE are Tootsie’s Parents???

Well…I am happy to say that I can clear up this little mystery once and for all in one fell swoop!

Grammie and Grampie…ARE my Mom and Dad! The day they became grandparents…they ditched their real names and became known as Grampie and Grammie. That is what they, and everyone around them calls them…even the staff at their store! If you call them by their real names…My kids have no idea who you are talking about…and sometimes they don’t even answer! Grampie and Grammie are very special.

This man is my Dad. His real name is Glen…but…prefers to be known as Grampie. He has many faces to him.

The silly and fun little flirty face!..

The goofy great sense of humor face…

This is the face he’s wearing right now as he reads this…(glad I am three hours away right now…ha ha…love you Daddy?) ha ha ha!

He is My Dad…he is a hard working mechanic, creative and fun man…and I am so glad my kids have a Grampie like him.

This lady is my Mom. Her real name is Iris. She, like my dad has a name she prefers. Grammie. It is one of her claims to fame! She also has several faces…

Her professional face…this is one heck of a business woman!

This is my Mom. She is the strongest woman I know. If there is something that needs doing and no one to help…she finds a way. She is creative, smart, classy, eloquent and very talented. I am thankful that she is who she is and that my kids can have someone so admirable to call Grammie.

I hope that this post will clear up any confusion as to where my parents are and who Grammie and Grampie are!!!

His Favorite Word is “NO”

Here we are again.   Celebrating Father’s Day.
I can say that I honestly tried to take some serious photos of my Dad, (AKA Grampie) but HE chose NOT to co-operate, so…I had to use what I could find. Anyone who knows my Dad, will know that he is not known for his co-operative nature.   His favorite word is NO…no matter what the question. He loves to be as difficult as he possibly can, to get under all of our skin!

Since he didn’t co-operate, I, as his daughter, was left with NO choice.   I had to take matters into my own hands and just simply work with what I could find.
If you are new to Tootsie Time, I would like to introduce you to my Dad.   There are many sides to Grampie…

For as long as I can remember, I have always been a Daddy’s girl. To me, my Dad could build, fix or do ANYTHING!    He was so many things to me, and now he is those things to my kids.

…he’s magical and imaginative …(love the bling)

…he’s serious, and sometimes a little cranky.

he’s a husband…

…who sometimes ends up in the dog house…

…he’s a jack of all trades…(I come by my love of tools honestly!)   This photo kind of makes me wonder what he was thinking…he almost looks surprised!

He’s a thorough mechanic…he gets right into his work…(literally)
He’s an outdoor-sy kind of guy.   He loves the farm…and has put his heart into making it a beautiful place to live.

He has his Amish side…(I think maybe his hat is a little tight)….

…there! That’s better!   hahahahaha!   He's sexy and he "gnomes" it! hahaha

…there is some family resemblance.   uh huh!

He is the coolest Grampie any kid could ever want.

My kids adore him…and my son wants to be like him when he grows up…I will say that kind of makes me nervous…hahaha!

If The Walls of This Old House Could Tell a Story…Another Trip To the Bathroom…

In my last post in this series, I finished showing you around My Cowboy’s 108 year old house.

Until today you all have only seen the BEFORE photos…and have taken a weekly tour through the progress in each room.

Today…we are going to start the best part of the tours to date….TODAY WE START THE DECORATED SPACES!

I have so much to show you guys, that I had a hard time deciding where to start!   I could have started with the first small bedroom that I showed you weeks ago…or the master bedroom…or the living room…or the hallway/staircase…or the kitchen…or the bathroom!   They are all looking SO good that it was a hard choice to make!

After much deliberation…I decided that in spite of the fact that it is not completely finished yet…(there are still a few little things that the Cowboy needs to do,) I would pick up right where I left off…in my favorite room of the house…the one where I got to have as much fun creating it as I wanted to …the bathroom.

Lets get started:

Let’s decorate!!!

The first thing I did when the construction part of this room was finished…was head to the storage unit and grab a few things that I had been plotting and scheming to use in this house.   I am a decorator…and that means I more than likely have a few things kicking around that are not in use in my own house right now…(I like to rotate things once and a while…that way I don’t get sick of them…) What? Doesn’t everyone do that?

Once I had a good selection of “stuff” to choose from established…I loaded up and headed back to Minburn to get the fun started!    I unpacked the boxes of my Cowboy’s things that he had collected to use in this house…and after I mumbled several times about his ‘cowboy taste’ and how silly some of his decorating items were…I got to work.

Do you recognize the piece holding the towels ?   Yep…it is the one I used in my old house in the main floor bathroom!   I don’t have any space to use it in my house right now…and I love it…so…why not use it in this house???   I added some towels in the color scheme of this room…and finally added some ‘hunting towels.’   Yes…you are seeing things correctly…that IS a hand towel with Deer on it.   Yes it is for real…it is one of the Cowboy’s favorite towels….and NO I was not surprised that he had it.

A wooden tool box tipped upside down, becomes a great place to hang towels, and the top can be used as a shelf!

We found this old wooden crate in the basement of the house. It came from a grocery store that used to be in Minburn a long time ago…makes a great display for old medicine bottles and his Deer toothbrush holder…

This baby hangs in the bathroom above the door.

I had to do a little imaginative thinking when it came to the shower area of this room…The tub is teensy…but we intended it that way.   We need some type of shower curtain that will go all the way around, and since we live in a small town... we could not find one that was already made…so…

…Until such time, that we find one, I made my own!
It works great…just not as attractive as the ones you can buy…but for now it is just right.

Since we don’t have a traditional tub and shower…the shower curtain that Cowboy has, needed to be put up as a decoration.   I found this old wooden hanger in a closet upstairs…it works great as a fun way to hang the “loyal to the hunt” shower curtain. I simply drilled a hole in each end and added some twine.

Ta-Da!

I went outside and found myself a fairly decent looking chunk of tree trunk in the fire wood pile…cleaned it up and sprayed it with a sealant. It will be PERFECT to hold…

..This baby!

The original plan was that we were going to plumb the old pump in and make it the water spout for the tub…but decided against it as there were no fittings that we could find to make it work…so…it is there as a decoration…and placed so as to appear that it is the tap.

This old ammunitions box from the military base here in our town, was a gift from the old poop that lives next door to me…I cleaned it right up…and put a sealant on it.    It now not only functions as a bench to sit on…

It now holds the towels and spare toiletries for the bathroom.

I still need to put something on to finish the countertop around the sink, but we are not sure if that sink stand is going to stay, so I am waiting.

This bathroom is coming together!

Everyone who walks into it LOVES it. It is filled with such personality...and so much whimsy!

I will leave you with a couple of photos of the interior of this room.   I had SO much fun creating this bathroom!!!   It just makes me smile to look in here and see all the fun finishing touches…it’s definitely a room with a great sense of humor…

I searched and searched my computer for even ONE good photo of the Cowboy’s bathroom that did NOT have the toilet seat up…but to no avail…so I have to share this photo…and start training that Cowboy to PUT THE SEAT DOWN!!!!!

I am excited about the piece that I picked to use as a shower head…it is super fun…I wish we had not run out of time to do all of the finishing touches before our deadline…but that gives me something to do in the spring…baseboards, trims etc are things that a Cowboy can live without for a few months.   (I guess that means that I will be taking you on another tour of the bathroom once there has been more work done) Hopefully by the time the photos of the completed work is done…one of us remembers to PUT THE DAMN TOILET SEAT DOWN!

For WEEKS now…I have been sharing a project that I am so very proud of with you all. If anyone had asked me if I was capable of doing something like this 2 years ago, I would have laughed at them and said NO!   It has been a labor of love…of gigantic proportions…and I have enjoyed every minute of it so far.

Those who are new to this series are probably wondering what is the project I am referring to?   It is the inside of this old house of course!!!

Up to this point I have shared before photos…small bedroom photos….kitchen photos…living room photos…master bedroom photos…stairwell/staircase photos…all of which have shown huge changes…but today you are about to see the start of the biggest change in the house…the most original Tootsie Change that I have ever had the chance to do.

The house is owned by my very own Cowboy…He had been wanting this house to be fixed up for years…but really didn’t have any encouragement, help or ideas as to what it should look like.   Then…I arrived on the scene and BOSSED that boy ALL around…(hee hee…just kidding…) I arrived, and fell in love with the house. When he mentioned that he wouldn’t mind making the old house where he and his siblings grew up live-able again…I was ALL over that!   My imagination went to work…and we have shocked and amazed all who have walked through the door since we started.

Today I am going to show you the beginning of my favorite room in the house. The Bathroom.   This room was such a fun project…The Cowboy was nervous I am sure when I told him of my plan, but he was also excited as it was something no one else in this area has, and he had never seen anything like it.

I ALMOST skipped this post and went straight for the finished room…but there is so much that went into the making of this space, that I didn’t want to miss one detail..and let me tell you …there are details…loads of them...and they are good ones!

Lets get started.

I didn’t manage to get a photo of the original bathroom…but you should probably be happy that I didn’t.   It wasn’t pretty.   I did however, happen to get a photo of the fixtures that were in there when we got busy working in this house.   There you have them…all robins egg blue and chipped, rusted and GROSS!

This is what it looked like after we took out the tub, toilet, sink and other odds n ends that were in there.

This photo was taken before we put the living room panels back on the wall. Cowboy had some electrical to do before we closed it off again. He also had to build a false wall where you see the black pipe going up the wall…so the bathroom just got a little smaller…

Once the false wall was built, and insulated…we did the wood planks on all of the walls of the new bathroom. The floor boards were not in good shape to be painted or used in the décor, AND we had a little plan made for the shower…so he also added a false floor to the room…complete with a little raised area where the shower would be.

Lookin’ good so far!   I absolutely love the planks done in the rusty vinegar treatment.

While I was waiting for the Cowboy to finish putting the floor down, and put the electric in, and the TOILET…(yay) and the rest of the plumbing…I decided to address the PINK door that is part of the current décor!

It’s just NOT going to work in this color…that is pink… and I am pretty sure that PINK is not rustic, or manly, or even an option for this house in any way shape or form…especially NOT on the bathroom door!…

So…I got to work.

I took it outside on a warm, sunny, fall day in September…I layed it on it’s back and spread paint stripper all over one side at a time.

Years and YEARS of paint quickly began to curl up and show itself on the door.   I spent an entire afternoon stripping this door completely down to it’s plain wood beginnings.

The stripper worked like a charm.   Almost every speck of paint was gone!

All it needs now…is a little rust treatment to make it mesh with the rest of the house!

I will do that as soon as the Cowboy comes outside and cuts the bottom of the door down so that it fits into the new bathroom!

Ta-Da!

I put one coat of rusty vinegar on the door…let it dry and applied another.

It looks sensational!   We both love the way it looks!

Next up…the “tub”…the beginning of the most fun part of this room.

One day while we were out picking up supplies for the house renovations, I steered my Cowboy towards the livestock section of the store.   I showed him this feed trough.

You should have seen his face when I first suggested that this would be his new bathtub!!!   hahahaha!   I wish I had had a camera!   He almost looked confused at first…but, when I explained…he had a huge grin on his face…he likes the idea ….a LOT!

Now, my original plan was to have a big old wooden barrel to use as a tub…but we could not acquire one…so my next choice was readily available…and cost us less than $50!

All this baby needs, is a drain….and that will be easy enough to do.

DONE!

I really wanted the “tub” to be on an angle in the left corner of this photo…but that would make other “features” of this area of the room either awkward, or impossible to do…so I agreed to keep it in the middle of the platform.

I am LOVING the little ‘tub’!!!

Now I know what you all are thinking…

‘HOW THE HELL IS ANYONE OTHER THAN A TINY CHILD SUPPOSED TO BATHE IN THAT TUB????’

RELAX guys…it isn’t supposed to be a bathing tub…it is a shower tub.   No one is going to be having long luxurious bubble baths in there…it is a quick shower type bathroom. This house isn’t going to be a full time living space…it is a weekend, and hunting retreat.   This feed trough is perfect for the scheme that my imagination has cooked up!

My next task, after the bathroom sink was installed was to tackle the floor.

…DONE!

Very sorry that the pic is so blurry…I used simple peel and stick tiles…the same kind of thing that I used in the kitchen…just a little lighter color.

This is where it’s at so far!

Up to this point…I have touched every single element of this bathroom…every board on each wall…the tub, the toilet, the sink….but I have not touched one surface…and it needs me…

…it needs me really bad.   The ceiling is NOT attractive in any way shape or form.

I needed to come up with an idea to make that just a little less hard to look at…and a little more comfy and warm feeling.

I popped into the hardware store, and picked up one of these babies!   It will be just the right size…and won’t require me to do anything but use it!

I also picked up some of these curtain hangers…and three shower type tension rods.

Then I got busy…

I hung that drop cloth from each of two of the tension rods and installed them at each end of the room….right close up to the ceiling.    I then took the third tension rod and just popped it right there…nice and tight and high in the center of the ceiling.

That hides the ugly..warms and softens the space and looks not too bad!

So far…this bathroom is coming together nicely.

I am so pleased with everything working out without any major complications.

I love it!

Now…

...I am really tempted to keep sharing the transformation…but this post is already really getting long, AND…The Cowboy, and Grammie figure I should end it at this point.    SO…This is all I am sharing today…BUT…I may be back in a day or two with the rest of the bathroom….You will LOVE what I cooked up “under my hair” (the way we now all refer to my imagination) :)

For weeks now…7 to be exact, I have been sharing one of the biggest and most enjoyable projects I have ever had the privilege to work on! For those who missed a few posts, I have been working on a total transformation of the inside of this wonderful little old house in Minburn Alberta!

The house is owned by my very own Cowboy…a kind, sweet, gentle, practical, and simple man.   He did not want to see the old house where he grew up, go to waste, nor did he want to see it get restored to original…or worse…to frilly excellence.   What he wanted for the old place, was a transformation into a rustic, relaxing, country retreat.   He does not intend to live in the house full time, but does want it to be “liveable” for weekends, and during hunting season.

The work in the old house began in Sept. of this year, and has been ongoing.   We were working to have 2 of the 4 bedrooms, the bathroom, living room and kitchen renovated for the month of November…hunting season.   We pretty much achieved our goal, and that Cowboy is right now in his old house with one of his 7 siblings, for hunting season!

I am currently sharing the transformation of the house, to BEFORE furniture state, and today I will share the living room.

This is the living room during the clean out.   It was filled with all sorts of “lovely” things…such as a huge bathroom vanity, a bunch of nick nacks, old books, boxes of papers…and a huge pile of cheap laminate flooring that was given to the cowboy by someone.   He didn’t have the heart to say that he didn’t want it, so here it is.     We have our work cut out for us, just getting the room cleared.

We also had to remove the wall in the living room for a bit, so we could fix the electrical and get some power into the bathroom…(I am so excited to share that bathroom…you have no idea)

I think the biggest improvement in this room…might be the removal of this carpet! I suppose at the time it was put in, it was very trendy…the 70’s are not known for their good taste now are they…haha

Carpet gone…stove pipe still needs to go…but I can work around it for now.

We are not sure exactly WHAT this is on the living room floor…but we ARE sure it needs to be removed…It is hard as a rock and didn’t really seem to have a purpose…lol

The way this room happened…was sort of funny. I finally got that Cowboy on board to do the transformation of this house.   We managed to get a little work on the bathroom done…toilet installed…YAY! (no more Tootsie being forced to pee in the trees!!!) …we got the living room emptied out, and that carpet ripped off the floors…then the Cowboy had to go back to work for his 2 week shift.

By this time I was super excited to get this ball rolling and see some shifts in the way the old house was looking…so…I sneaked out to Minburn a couple of days in a row…and I painted in the living room…

This is the very first room I painted in this house.   I just could not wait to show my Cowboy!

When that Cowboy got home from his shift at work…here it was!   All painted and looking rather different from what he left behind!   He was pleasantly surprised!

After getting the thumbs up on the walls…I started working on the floors. Lots of little bits of carpet backing to remove.

LOTS

The floor would have to be painted, as there were a few too many issues for us to resolve if we were to try to restore it.
So I whipped out our “accidental color” and got busy!

Looks okay with the primer on…
…but even better with the top coats!

I have been doing a lot of planning while I paint in this house…and I have a few items that I cannot use in the house we live in right now, so I think they might be happy additions to this living room…

I think this rug seems to fit right in!

I also have some pretty curtains, and a few odds and ends kickin around that I think I will bring to the project house and see what I can do with them!

Each time I come to work on the house I bring a few little items from the storage unit that belong to the Cowboy.   His Rocking chair…and a few of his trophies are already in the room. I am not a fan of the dead things on the walls…but that is what he wanted this place for…so that is what he gets.   I am glad they are hanging, as I don’t want to ruin them when I add other items to the décor!

That is ALL I am sharing with you all today!!!

I can’t wait to hear what you think of this room so far!

The next share of this old house is going to be of the bathroom…I am MOST excited about it…as it is a room like none I have ever had the chance to do.   I LOVE the bathroom in this old place…it is WAY fun!

It's Tailgate Time!

I've been MIA for a couple of weeks, but there is a great reason for it. I have been SWAMPED with work!

So...I reordered...and they finally arrived at the beginning of September. OMG you guys... you would not believe the response I have had!

They have a built in lined drink holder and a key chain with bottle opener attached to the inside of the regular pocket! I am IN LOVE with these hoodies...and apparently I am not alone...lol I have been overwhelmed with orders for these.

Several businesses have ordered for their company logo to be put on, and I am the official supplier of Grad hoodies for a few schools in the area...and I am even doing the staff hoodies for a nearby town!

I am so excited...lol

and this on the back! The kids are really loving their drink holder (tailgate) hoodies!

If The Walls of This Old House Could Tell a Story…The Staircase/ Hallway of The 108 Year Old House

I am so glad you stopped by!

Those of you who have been following the transformation of my Cowboy’s 108 year old house, have seen the kitchen, and two bedrooms…up to a point.

You have seen the before photos…and the first stages of a change that has knocked my Cowboy’s socks off.   The shares so far have not included much along the lines of decorating.   They have only included the “bones” of the rooms…walls, ceilings, floors and sometimes curtains on the windows.

Today, you are in for a treat!   I am going to share the most charming space(s) to date. You are going to see what I consider two areas-- the staircase and the hallway!   Now, I know you are probably thinking that it isn’t such a treat…but once you see how much work went into these two spaces…you will agree…it is a special little area.   I also considered it two spaces as it had a lot of work…and the stairs are an entity all their own…lol

Allow me to explain:

This is the stairwell…yes…it is well worn to say the least.

At the top of the stairs there is the most adorable set of windows…and a huge mess.

I had already started filling in some of the damaged areas when this photo was taken.

This is the door to that wonderful little balcony…Don’t you just LOVE the knife in the door thing the Cowboy has going on in this house?

When my best girlfriend came for a tour she commented that she “loved the locks” lol

Maybe we should address the “locks” as we go through this house reno…what do you think? lol

…you remember this little balcony…I can’t wait to put a chair out here!    BUT…it is winter now, and it is cold…so I am focused on the inside of the house.

I got myself started with the wall patching…

My GOODNESS (and I didn’t say it quite that nicely when I was here alone)   did I have a lot of patching to do…I went through one full large pail of filler just filling in all the holes in the hallway and stairwell.

This area…didn’t need to be perfect as we decided to put some panel board up all the way down the hall on this side of the stairs as the original plaster was in horrible shape.

There was a lot of filling to do on the actual stairwell walls as well…

I felt like it would never end! lol

While I grumbled and moaned and cursed and complained about the filling and sanding, my cowboy put up the panel board over the original plaster walls. That means MORE filling for me to do!   He used a lot of screws to make sure it was secure.

I am not impressed.

Have you noticed that filling holes and sanding are not my favorite tasks???   I can honestly say I HATE IT!

I thought it would never ever end!

I finally finished up…got all the holes filled in and started to paint!

The original plaster walls are not exactly the smoothest…lol…but we are just painting them as is…My Cowboy and I kind of like the character that the old walls have with all their ‘waves’.

We decided to use the wooden planks on the wall and ceiling in the hallway, so my cowboy got busy and put up this wall around the windows and the ceiling….

To my utter dismay, he damaged the walls a little bit when he put the planks on the ceiling. That was a long reach…and the wood was cut to be a tight fit…and my Cowboy is only an inch or two taller than me…(I am about 5’4”)   …so that was a really long reach. lol   (Sorry Cowboy…I had to say it out loud) lol

I needed to figure out how the heck I was going to fix that mess without getting paint on the ceiling!

One day while the Cowboy was away at work, I drove the hour up to Minburn and set up the ladder.   I made it as tall as I possibly could…and I tried to get up there and fix that damage on the ceiling.

I climbed up to the top of the ladder, and still was about 3 feet too short to reach!   So I grumbled, and complained and worked my way back down.

HOW THE HECK AM I GOING TO FIX THAT!????!

Then it came to me!

YEP!   I did…I taped my cutting brush onto the handle of a broom…

ta da!

This isn’t the first time in my life that I have taped the brush to something so I could reach! lol

It worked like a charm!

After I did that little touch up…I decided to take the ladder out of the stairwell…and ended up getting stuck!   That ladder is as heavy as they come…and it is not easy to maneuver on the stairs…somehow I managed to get it twisted and leaning on me…in a very awkward position…and I almost could not get out!   I had gotten it condensed down, but had one arm stuck in it...and I was in a very bad position! I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t figure a way to work my way out of that little predicament…there is NO cell phone service in the stairwell most of the time…and I locked the door behind me when I came in…No one else had a key and my Cowboy was not expected to be home for 2 full weeks!   I would have been hooped!   I finally got myself un-stuck…and man was I sweaty and tired after that! lol   Every time I walk down the stairs, I think of the day I had gotten myself wedged between the wall, the steps and that heavy ladder…and how I didn’t even ding the walls getting myself out! hahaha!!!

Anyways…enough with my clumsy story…back to the project.

With all the touch ups on the main walls finished, I then got busy and put the planks on the wall around that door!   That sure did make a difference!

Things are looking much better up here!

I put another coat of paint on all the walls…and stood back and looked at my handiwork!

So far…

So good!

It looks so much better…but still something isn’t quite right…

It needs something …

…ya…that staircase…it needs me… BAD!

Cowboy was very happy to hear that I was going to address this area…he said when he was small, he would often have splinters in his little feet from the wooden stairs and floors in the house. He was not interested in getting any more!

So…I went home for the night and made a plan.

The next morning I got up early…and drove back to my special project house.

Have I mentioned I am in love with this old lady?   Ya…the more time I spend here the more she seems to have gotten me hooked.

I spent the entire day staining and sealing the railing and staircase!!!   This was an enormous job…it took me 7 full hours to do all of it!   I was as high as a kite on the paint fumes too! lol

I have to admit…it did turn out fantastic!

To celebrate my success…I hung some sheers on that adorable little set of windows…and stood back to admire my work.

Yep…I totally nailed it.   That staircase looks fantastic now…not perfect…but, again, perfect is not what we are going for.   We wanted to spruce up the area…but hold some of the fond memories my Cowboy has of this space.

The end result was TOTALLY worth the huge paint hangover I got from staining and sealing the stairs!    hahaha!

I just had to share the curtains with you guys up close…They still need to be “primped” a little bit…and I think a cute valance would be a good idea.    I just love these old windows…they have so much charm.

I know what you are thinking…you are saying to yourself…”Toots…those curtains are NOT rustic, or Cowboy in any way, shape, or form! How BIG is that paint hangover…or are you still high????”

Well…quite frankly, I decided that I don’t care! hahaha!   My Cowboy will have to suck it up, and have a little Tootsie in this space. hahaha!

Besides…if I go completely rustic, it would be nothing but hard, repetitive and boring…so I decided that we are going to add a little softness to the spaces in this place.   There is nothing wrong with that!   The Cowboy actually likes the curtains on the windows…so it’s all good! (lucky him…or he’d have had some curtains he didn’t like on his windows…FOREVER!) HAHAHA!

Just this last week, the Cowboy stopped at his Mom’s new place on his way back up to work. He took his computer out and shared photos of the old house with her.   Cowboy’s Mom spent a lot of years cleaning up after her brood in this house. She knows this place like no one else does…(I am starting to know it almost as well as she did…I seem to have touched pretty much every inch of it in some way, shape or form so far)   I don’t think she had time to look at the house quite the way I do, she was a very busy mom…8 children plus all their friends is a handfull!   I honestly do NOT know how this woman stayed sane, or how she did all that she did…I only have 3 kids and I am exhausted, annoyed and overwhelmed by them a lot of the time!    She might just be a super hero with the patience of a saint!    lol   The more stories my Cowboy tells me about his childhood…the more I have to say I admire this lady. She sure worked hard for her family.

When the Cowboy started showing his Mom the before photos of her old home…she knew exactly which room every photo was of…even though it had gone down hill a lot since she moved out all those years ago…she still recognized it.   BUT when he started showing her the AFTER photos…she didn’t recognize some of the rooms!   She was amazed at the changes we have made…and she really liked them!   That in itself made all the filling and sanding worthwhile!   I have to admit that I was a little nervous to hear her opinion of my work to this point.   I was hoping she didn’t hate it, or get upset that it had changed so much. The relief I felt was huge!

Over the past month or so, I have been sharing the biggest project I have ever done. I have been working on a 108 year old house in a tiny little village called Minburn Alberta.   This house is owned by my Cowboy. It is the house he and his 7 siblings called home since he was born, and it holds a lot of memories for him.

We spent some time discussing what this house used to look like…and what he would like to see it as, after we fixed it all up.   He did not want it to be restored…as he wanted it to reflect his personality today.   So…the plan was made…to renovate and fix up this old house to be a rustic retreat, filled with his rodeo/cowboy memories, hunting trophies and comfortable soothing colors, textures and style.   My Cowboy is one of the most gentle, patient, calm people I have ever met. His personality is not one of an extravagant man…but one of a hard working simple country boy…with a love of family, nature and a heart of gold.
While I have been diligent in working on the upper level of the house, fixing and fine tuning two of the four bedrooms, Cowboy has been changing the light fixtures, and repairing/ upgrading the electrical, and upgrading the plumbing to the kitchen and bathroom…he has been doing all the parts of this project that I do not know how to do myself, and/or refuse to learn or attempt to do!
When my Cowboy finally had enough of “his work” done in the old kitchen, I was able to do some of MINE! Today I am going to share the kitchen.
Lets get started.
I need to say that my photos are lacking in this room…I was excited to get this done, and simply forgot to take as many shots as I should have.   Bare with me…

This is the kitchen…it is NOT pretty.   In this photo, we have got all sorts of tools and supplies laying around…there is a lot of space in this room. It has great potential.

The fridge and stove still work, but not reliably. They need to go. The upper cupboards are not overly functional anymore…and are not going to stay either.

There is the start of a nice big window on this wall. It will stay, and we will have a window made to fit the space. That porch, if you remember me mentioning it before, is going to be removed in the spring…so that window will look out onto a deck and into the back yard. It will be wonderful!

I am sure that the Cowboy won’t miss the pink paint or wall paper in this room…lol

This table has seen a lot of family meals, and has been repaired several times…but will not make the cut.   It will be taken out when we get started on the floors.

The floors…I think this photo pretty much says all that needs saying. There are nails, lifts, tears and damage all through out the kitchen lino.   It will be removed for sure!

The ceiling is just as bad as the floors…so it will need to be changed.
As you can see…this room will offer a challenge.   It needs a lot of work.
We got started…

OUT goes the old damaged linoleum…revealing…

…and equally ugly tile floor.
This tile floor would not be removed.   It would serve as a base for something much nicer…and more comfortable.

There!   That’s much better! It is just simple peel and stick tiles from the hardware store. They were inexpensive and will do what we need them to do! They will also look great with the wall treatment we decided on.

The walls…are being covered with an overlay of 1x6 spruce boards!   They are treated with the same “brew” of rust, vinegar, baking soda and black tea, that I used on the dresser that I re-dressed to fit into this house.   I brushed the mixture onto each board one at a time, and let them dry.   Once they were dried enough, they were cut and pieced onto the walls to create a wonderful rustic look!
We originally wanted them to look like old barn board…but this is what we got.   We both love this look and decided that it would be a nice treatment for the ceiling too….
So…I got busy and did more walls, and the Cowboy did the ceiling and the remaining walls. We are very happy with the look.

Now…the cupboards…

We ripped the top cupboards out…removed the old appliances…and finished the wall with the wood treatment.

Where the old appliances and upper kitchen cupboards used to be, I put up plank shelving. These will be on the walls on either side of the kitchen window, and will hold all kinds of wonderful things.

My Cowboy installed a couple of new light fixtures, and we are almost ready for furniture!   All that remains, is to put some finishing touches to the wood walls…and clean up the mess that construction seems to create in spite of how careful we try to be! lol
That’s all I am going to share for today…I can’t hardly wait to share the finished room…it is SO perfect! I also have lots of great photos! lol

Four weeks ago, I began sharing the most wonderful junkin’ project of my life thus far.   The renovation/ transformation of a 108 year old house that my Cowboy grew up in, and now owns.

The house was in a nasty state of disrepair inside and out, and in desperate need of some attention.   I spent a little time chatting up my Cowboy, talking him into Tootsifying the old place a little bit…okay…who am I trying to kid here…Tootsifying the place a LOT. He finally agreed…and we got started.

The Cowboy is an avid hunter, and always wanted to have a place to crash during hunting season. He tends to hunt in Minburn county, (where the old house is located) and having an option to stay would be wonderful, as we live in another town about an hour away.

The old lady is getting a renovation, cleaning and total make over. She is going from a ruin…to a cowboy/hunting/rustic hideaway.

The transformation has been fun - fun - fun!!!

Since I shared the small bedroom last week, I am going to share the master bedroom today.

Lets get started!

THIS nasty mess is the master bedroom!   The wallpaper is faded and falling off…the plaster is crumbling and it needs a LOT of work.   The kind of work that we do NOT have the time to do right this minute as hunting season is almost here.   I need to come up with a way to make this room suitable to sleep in…and I need to do it fast!   My Cowboy is certainly lucky that his Tootsie has a very good imagination…and a pile of energy.

I contemplated this room while I cleaned out the clutter and garbage on the floors….

I had a lot to do in this room, so I brought in the “troops” to help!   My two oldest kids were happy to help me clean out the room and pull off some of the hanging wallpaper.   In all honesty, they were absolutely delighted to pull OFF the wallpaper…They are normally not supposed to be touching the walls of any house…so demolition type activity is a real treat for them! lol

Since we are planning to do some serious work on these two walls…but not this month, due to time restrictions, I decided to seal in some of the ICK with a nice thick coat of paint. I was happy to use up the last of the old red paint that I had kicking around, so that part of the project was free…! YAY!    I then painted the baseboards, and the other two walls with the plateau gray that I painted the walls of the small bedroom with.

Once the walls were dry…

I grabbed some of these…

….and attached them to the walls like this.

I put up several across the top and the bottom of the red walls.

I then cut some copper pipe.

I just know you are wondering what the heck I am doing…so I will just get to the point.

I had several sets of sheer curtains left over from my old house. They are in a taupe color and right now I am hnot using them. They are taking up valuable storage space in my house, and I just knew I could make them work in this room.

Lucky for me, the Cowboy had replaced all the plumbing in the house the week before, while I was working on the small bedroom, and he had a nice pile of copper pipe sitting in the back yard on the scrap pile. I needed some nice strong curtain rods, in a nice long length…and that copper pipe was just screaming my name!

I headed out to the pile…and brought a bunch of those lengths of copper pipe into the house.   I cut it, and pieced it together with pipe collars that we picked up at the hardware store, and made myself a custom curtain rod!

I threaded the sheer curtains tightly onto the copper pipe that I cut, both top and bottom.

I then set the top rod of the curtain on TOP of the L brackets that I set up earlier.   The nut and bolt are there to hold the rod from rolling off the bracket. I then put the bottom rod UNDER the bracket…the nut and bolt are pointing downward to hold the rod in.

The bottom will look like this!

This is what the two walls that we will not have time to repair completely look like now!

The curtains cover the red paint that seals the walls…and it softens the room nicely!

I then added some nice cream colored bed sheet curtains the same way that I did in the small bedroom…and was good to go!

Walls, ceiling and trims are all done in Plateau Gray…and the floor got the rosy color that we like to call a happy accident…as we ended up with a custom color…and the room is ready for furniture!

My Cowboy was away at work for two weeks, while I was playing in this room among other things.

When he got home, I took him on a little tour of his old home…

He was certainly surprised to see the changes I made to this room…he loves the curtained walls!   He even commented that maybe we should just leave them up for good!

So?   How did I do?   Do YOU think this quick fix will make this room comfortable enough until we get some time to get in there and fix those nasty walls???

If the Walls Of This Old House Could Tell a Story…The Small Bedroom in the 108 Year Old House.

I recently started the biggest project of my junkin’ life…and am loving every little minute of it! To most it may seem like a lot of daunting, overwhelming work, but to me, it has been nothing but the most fun!

I love painting, decorating, and designing.   I crave the feeling that comes when I see a project come together. I get excited when I can share something that I have put my heart and soul into, and have it turn out just the way I had hoped!   That is what this house is to me.   It is a labor of love…and an absolute delight to play with.
I didn’t know where to begin… You see, I didn’t just take this house project room by room. I kind of started in one room, and if I happened to be painting…I kept on going.   It was just one of those things, where if you were filling holes…you filled ALL the holes…if you were painting…you kept painting…and while you waited for something to be ready for the next step in one room, you worked on another room…So…you can see where my dilemma is at. It took me a bit, but I finally decided where to start the sharing.
My Cowboy, wants to be able to stay in the house during hunting season this November.   It will make things much easier for him if he doesn’t have to drive the 60 or so minutes home every night, so I am charged with getting things “ready” for him and his hunting companions. (one of his older brothers and his daughter)
There are 4 bedrooms in this house.   We decided to work on 2 of them for immediate use.   The other two are going to take a little more work, and are not a necessity right at this time. They can wait until after hunting season is over.
Today I am going to share the progress that has been made in the small bedroom. After I played with it a little bit, it is pretty much finished…Now it is just waiting for some furniture.

This is the smaller of the two bedrooms BEFORE I got my grubby little hands on it.   Out of all the rooms on the second floor, it was in the best shape.   I was happy to see that pretty much all this room would need was a good cleaning, and some paint!    The walls were a dingy white with very bright blue trims. That should be an easy enough fix.
The photo above and the one below are both a little fuzzy, as they were taken with my cell phone camera.   I got excited about starting this project, and forgot the usual camera at home.   Ya…I know…I am not proud of it either…blonde moment!

With that in mind, my Cowboy and I sat down and decided on a color scheme.   Okay…lets be honest…I told this sweet man what the color scheme was to be.

WHAT!?   I KNOW what you are thinking right now.   You are thinking that Tootsie is BOSSY!

Well…okay…Yes I sort of am…but I do know what I am talking about when it comes to paint colors…and that Cowboy…well…lets be honest…he only knows what Camouflage looks like…he hasn’t got a clue how to choose colors for a wall!    He’s not used to having choices…or noticing colors…he’s a guy!   He does have pretty good sense of colors though, So…we went to the store and I pulled a couple of paint chips out…and gave him a some choices.   Eventually, we chose and purchased a color called Plateau Gray.   This color is perfect.   To the Cowboy it is gray…to me…it is almost an olive green-ish color…I like it a lot.
I was so excited…I got right to work.

I painted the walls, trims, and ceiling in the plateau gray.   I am very happy with the outcome.   It looks very nice.   In this photo you can see the color choice.   You can also see that I needed to replace one piece of trim on the window, paint the window frame, and then move my attention to the floor.

The floor…The floor in this room is not in terrible shape.   It is actually in very good condition in comparison to the other rooms in the house.   I think this floor might be newer than in the rest of the house …or something. I COULD get away with just scrubbing it, and perhaps staining it…sealing it and calling it done…BUT…the wood floors in the rest of the house are in a lot worse condition. There is paint, gouges, and splinters everywhere.   My Cowboy said that he remembers the splinters ALL too well.   (As a little boy his mom would have a needle within reach to remove the splinters that the wood floors would leave in his teensy feet.)   There is no way we can salvage the original finish on the floors in the entire house…it is just not reasonable.   We don’t want to cover them up…just spruce them up and seal in some of the splinters.
The floors need to be done…but there is no way they can be the same color as the walls, ceilings and trims.   So…I dragged that Cowboy back to the store…and we chose a paint color (together this time) to use on the floors in the old house.

As luck would have it, our original paint choice sucked monkey butts!   I put it on the floor…and we both hated it…it sort of looked like a very sickly salmon color.   It was SO ugly that I didn’t take any photos of it!   Yep…it was THAT bad!   NOT at all what the paint chip showed…SO…we headed back to the store…and got them to add 3 oz of black to it…and ended up with the color you see in the photo above…So…I have no name to give you to reference this paint color…it is an original…by mistake type color.
The photo is once again, a little fuzzy…Yes…you guessed it…the photo above was taken with my cell phone, since, as luck would have it, I forgot the camera at home…sorry!

Here is a better look at the floor color…and the paint color…AND the curtains I added to the window!   Those are the simplest curtains ever!   Can you guess what they REALY are?
If you guessed that there are two twin size flat sheets on that window you are absolutely correct.   I used bed sheets!   I simply cut a little slit in the top part of each end of the hemmed cuff at the top of the flat sheet, and slipped the rod right through.   EASY PEAZY…not too frilly…but still quite pretty…FAST and CHEAP!

Right now there are two cheezy looking tassle tie backs on the curtains, but they are going to be changed out as soon as I get my hands on some burlap or twine or something a little better suited for a casual, cozy rustic space.   For now, the tassles will do.
I picked up a couple of very inexpensive runner rugs, and was testing the colors…I like the way that looks too!
You can see a mattress on the floor to the right…There is going to be a bed frame and some other furniture type items added to this room in the next week or two…but for today…this is the way it looks.
This concludes my peek into the small bedroom in the 108 year old house that My Cowboy owns, (and is letting me play with!)   Remember, he asked for rustic, cozy, hunting lodge, country cowboy style.

SO, I RACED TO THE KITCHEN, FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR,

GOBBLED UP TURKEY AND BUTTERED POTATOES,

If Walls Could Tell A Story…The 108 Year Old House…On The Inside

I recently introduced you to my latest project.   The biggest most challenging junkin’ project I have ever taken on.   I shared with you the exterior and yard space of the 108 year old house in Minburn Alberta. When I posted about the old place that my cowboy owns, everyone was very excited to see what we were up to. There were many comments anticipating the tour of the inside of this house...so today I am going to share just that with you.

If you are following this series, you will remember that this is the property that My Cowboy, and his 7 older siblings (one sister and 6 brothers), his mom and dad, and whoever else needed a place to crash lived. Cowboy says that there were always a few extra kids staying with them...Their home was open to whoever needed a place to stay.   (personally, I think his mother was a superhero...she already had 8 of her own kids, and she was open to caring for extras???   That to me is amazing)

My Cowboy bought the property after his mother decided that she no longer wanted to live here, and moved to a slightly larger community.   The place stood empty for the better part of 10 years…empty except for the leftovers that no one really wanted to claim.   Time alone without heat or any real maintenance took a little bit of a toll on the old house. The inside can only be described as a stale mess.

Today’s tour will include a look the interior rooms before we got too much started.   I have a lot of photos to share today, and in an effort not to make this post painfully long, I will share just a few shots of each room. After today's total tour, you will only see a glimpse of each room as it is progressing with the clean up and transformation.

Grab yourself a coffee…it’s going to be a long one! I have to say...that the photos I am sharing seem to somehow make the inside of this house not look so bad.   Trust me...in spite of the fairly nice look in the photos...it is a mess, and a stale smelling disaster area! Cob webs and dust are just the teensy tip of the iceberg!

Shall we begin???

To give you a better idea of what you are looking at, I am putting this picture of the exterior of the house up first. This may help you see where you are as we walk through the house.
First, look at the gray slanted addition on the side of the house.   This is the addition that was added to give this large family extra space. It eventually became a porch, and a bedroom.   For many years it has just been a space to drop off equipment or things that needed to be locked up and stored. It is an ugly eyesore!

Now…it is our work space…and in the spring it is going to be ripped off, an a patio put in it's place.

You can see that before I remembered to take some photos, we had already removed the old bath tub and toilet…they were robin’s egg blue…Yes…there were a lot of bright and “wonderful” colors used in this old lady.   The orange on the back wall there is another cheery addition to the layers and layers of paint on most of the walls in this old house.

For right now, this porch is a great spot for us to cut wood, mix paint and store supplies while we work on the rest of the interior, that will be transformed into something completely different.

When you walk into the porch, you can go directly into the kitchen…

You can see the doorway into the porch and to the right, there is a gigantic hole cut into the wall.   That big hole is there intentionally…We are going to put a large window into this spot.   Once the porch is removed, a picture window will be a nice addition to the room.
The wood in this house is fir, and it is OLD…which means cutting it is a nightmare.   I don’t know how many blades Cowboy went through to cut this wall…but it wasn’t pretty. lol

There is wall paper, which is falling off…and lots of it.   Layers and layers of it! There is ick and old grunge everywhere…and then there are all the paint colors.   We have a lot to do in this room.

It is just a darned good thing that what goes on ‘under my hair’, as my youngest calls it…(meaning my imagination) is active and very very big.   I am gonna need it!

The first and by far the most important thing we needed to do, was to get a toilet installed in this house!   I was sick to death of “roughing it”, and with fall coming there would be no tree cover to hide my bare bottom if I needed to pee!   So…Cowboy got busy and was working on the bathroom as I took all the photos.

The living room was full of just about anything and everything you could imagine.   There was a huge pile of very cheap laminate flooring, a nasty bathroom vanity, a filing cabinet, boxes and boxes of greeting cards that the family was given over the years, books, papers, you name it…I bet it was there.   We sorted through it all and either burned or sent most of it to the dump. We tried to sell the laminate flooring and the vanity in a garage sale, but no one wanted it, not even for free... so we tossed it. Anything that was sentimental in value is now in storage.

By far the biggest improvement in this room will be the removal of this carpet…which has seen much better days…although it was ugly even when it was new…haha.   You have got to wonder what inspired the style of 70's...well other than drugs...haha

We now are heading up to the second floor.   I need to figure out what to do about the steps. Cowboy thinks we need to try to keep as much of the stairs and railing original if we can. It is going to be a challenge...they are very well worn.

At the top of the stairs, we have an adorable set of windows just screaming for me to put some pretty little curtains on them.   However that will only come AFTER we get some of this other stuff dealt with.   As you can see...the plaster walls in this area have seen MUCH better times.
A few years back one of Cowboy’s older brother’s decided to start to remove the plaster.   That idea was short lived however, when big brother realized how much work that would entail…and now we need to decide how to deal with this mess!

There are holes in the plaster everywhere…and I do mean EVERYWHERE.   This house is going to take a lot of drywall patching compound.

At the end of the hallway, we come to a door.   This is the door out to that fabulous little balcony on the front of the house!
Something pretty needs to happen in this area too I think.

I don’t even think words can describe my thoughts on the mess in this room.   We cleaned it up to take this photo. Be glad it’s blurry…Be VERY glad. This room is going to take a lot more work than other's...so it will not be on the top of the list...it will wait until after Christmas.

This…is one of two bedrooms that are getting immediate attention. This one, for some unknown reason is in good shape!   The floor, and walls seem to be almost fine. Perhaps all it will take is a few simple coats of paint to smarten this room right up!

This bedroom is not as lucky as the other smaller one. Several layers of peeling wall paper, and crumbling plaster are making me wonder what I have managed to get myself into.

I need to come up with a plan…and I need that plan FAST.   It was September when I took these photos…and my Cowboy wants to be able to stay overnight here in this house in November!
He is an avid hunter, and wants to be able to crash here after a long day in the bush.   Since he does do most - if not all of his hunting in the Minburn area, it kind of makes sense… to go home from here IS an hour away, so having a place to stay if necessary is a comforting thought.

So…what I need is a little time to scheme…and plot and plan.   Not too much time, as we are getting to a crunch here...Cowboy works away from home 2 weeks at a time, and that isn't going to make things go any faster!
I do know that my Cowboy wants this place to be a hunter’s hideaway….not a frilly Victorian palace.   So…I have to come up with an idea…that will be comfortable, rustic and still have a little Tootsie style in it too!   Is that even possible?????

I just don’t know how the heck I am going to incorporate MY style of decorating into this house   There are a lot of challenges for me to incorporate some of the items that Cowboy is insisting on having in this place…did I mention that he has deer heads and other dead things that he is going to use in the décor? He is a guy...and has a few cheezy "guy" type things too. Ya…this is going to be a challenge of my Tootsie skills like you have never seen before!

Wish me luck…I think I am going to need it!

If The Walls Of This Old House Could Tell A Story…The Saddest Chapter Is About To End.

Hey guys! I'm here today to re-publish the series many of you know as the 108 year old house series. It was originally published 8 years ago and shares the story of how the Cowboy and I began our journey to restore/ renovate the old house we have in a tiny town in Alberta Canada. There is a wonderful reason for refreshing your memory of this process ....we have finally gotten back to work and it is so exciting!

So...sit back, enjoy the next few posts and get ready for the next stage in our journey to revive the old girl.

Have you ever gone for a drive and focused your attention to the old homes in your area?   Some of them are so grand…and others humble. Some, when you look at them, almost scream with happiness and pride, and others look sad and forlorn. If these houses could tell a story, I bet every one of them would have a sad chapter or two within.
My Cowboy owns a property about an hour from where we live in a TINY little village called Minburn Alberta. The population of Minburn is at best 75 people.   This property is where he and his 6 brothers and 1 sister grew up.   The old place holds a LOT of memories for my Cowboy, and it has a very special place in his heart.
About 15 years ago, my Cowboy’s mom decided that she had lived there long enough and moved to a little larger community in Northern Alberta.   It was at that time, that my Cowboy, (the youngest child of the family) decided to purchase this place from his mom. He had a plan that he would fix it up slowly, and use it as a weekend project place.
Life is hectic…work, kids, rodeos and life made time of the essence and the empty house stood alone for the better part of those 15 long years…and those lonely years took a toll on the place. Members of the family occasionally would stop by the place to drop off unwanted items…and eventually it started to look a little dumpy.
Last year, when my Cowboy and I started dating, he took me to his old stomping grounds.   I noticed how sad he seemed when he looked at the place…he even mentioned knocking her down, and either leaving the enormous lot empty, or putting some sort of mobile home on it.   Now, if you know me, you know how much I LOVE a challenge…and if it involves junkin’ of any kind…I’M ALL IN!   This old lady does not deserve to be knocked down…she needs to be Tootsified!   It took a little talking, and encouraging, but that is just what is happening!
I would like to now introduce you to the Cowboy and Tootsie’s BIGGEST junkin’ project EVER!…and my Cowboy’s childhood home:

This house 116 years old!   She is sound, and pretty much solid as a rock. The roof doesn’t even leak…(this surprised me as it needs to be re-shingled in the worst way!)

There is no way my Cowboy should knock down this old lady…She is just way too pretty to send to the dump.

I adore the little balcony on the upper level…I NEED to stand out here and enjoy the view!

I have a plan…and it’s a big one…that will take a lot of elbow grease and determination…but I do have a plan…and I am absolutely going to see this old house brought back to a beautiful state!   I can’t wait to see my Cowboy smile when he comes here…I hate that sad look he gets in his eyes.

The original house is all covered in ceramic tile shingles…there is a nasty addition on the back there…which will eventually have to go…but can stay for now.   It will become our workshop as we tackle the HUGE undertaking of fixing up the inside of this house!
We started in the summer of 2012.   We worked on the yard all summer long.
The following photos are what we started out with AFTER we mowed down the tall grass.
Cowboy had been paying someone to mow the lawn there…but that person did not take much pride in the job, and slowly the place got over grown and awful!   It took us a long time to get that enormous lot mowed properly!

This is just a portion of the yard…the west side of the yard.

There is the the east half! That old skinning shack will be burned this winter.

The trees are everywhere…there are some very pretty private areas in this yard…

I am in heaven in such a place…the possibilities are endless …my imagination is getting a great work out!
We worked about 6 days each month last summer getting all the scrap cleaned out of the yard…and thinning some of the Caragana bushes and overgrown Poplar trees thinned out, dead branches pulled, and the tall grasses pushed back to the property line.
The whole family got involved…me, kids and cowboy…we all worked our little fingers to the bone…but ended up with a beautiful yard to enjoy our visits in…

I have some flowers in mind for this place…

I have a lot of plans for the whole yard…I just need the time to do it! lol
When the winter came, I took the opportunity to chat up that Cowboy about the potential inside this old house!   All my chatter and encouragement worked.   I had a bunch of ideas on file, and showed him lots of them…I also kept some to surprise him with when he goes away to work and I am on my own in the project!   I really wanted my Cowboy to restore this old lady.
To my absolute delight, when spring arrived this year, we got busy and started to work on this place. We decided to start to work on the inside of the 108 year old house first, and then tackle the outside next year.   If we fix up the inside a little bit, we can spend the night here and not have to drive the 60 minutes home after a long day. It is finally time to take this old lady from her sad sad look…to something much more inviting…something comfortable, and happy.
Come along with us, as we dive right in and start one of the biggest junkin’ adventures I have ever been on.   We are re-purposing, and salvaging, and creating in every room of this old house.   It is going to be a most enjoyable journey…and I can’t hardly wait to share each time we get a little more done!

Well HELLO THERE! So glad you popped by today!

I have something new to share with you...and it's super fun! I have been one busy girl the last few weeks, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down AT ALL! I am NOT complaining though...it's a VERY good thing. Being this kind of busy means my little store is thriving! Between all of you and my wholesale accounts, I am running!

Before I get on with things, I want to address a few of the emails I have received since I got back to posting. I had turned off commenting on this site a few years ago for several reasons. 1. I don't like spam. 2. I am not here for people to use my comments to advertise their own businesses on. 3. I am not interested in abuse, drama or nasty comments from those who are selfish, unhappy, hateful or over confident in their ability to spread negativity! 4. I don't do politics, and don't appreciate those who try to make EVERYTHING political. Yes, these things have been an issue at some point. That said, because several of you have asked me to, I am turning on the comments, but having them moderated so I can spare you all from seeing things that don't belong. SO...if you write to me, and it doesn't appear immediately, it is just waiting for me to approve it...don't panic! I will publish them as soon as I get the chance!

Over the last several months, I have actually begun stocking 90% of the inventory in a very busy store in Saskatchewan Canada, and have lines in several others. I am loving every second of my life and it is amazing. Those of you who have followed for a while will remember a time where I thought I would never be happy again. I am the perfect example of no matter how dark it is right now, there is always a bright light coming if you just keep going!

Let's get to the good stuff!

I have been tossing this next idea around in the back of my mind now for a few weeks, and decided that it was time I tried it, tested it and perfected it, so I did...and it worked! Hello AGAIN! It feels SO good to be back trying to post again! Today I am super excited to share my latest! If my post is a little scattered, it is because I am multitasking. As I wait for my machines to finish (for my product line) I am posting. It is also 5AM. My day started 2 hours ago. Yes...I am up before dawn for two reasons. One...the Cowboy had to leave super early to travel to work. Two...It is supposed to be another hot hot hot day here and I will be using heat presses, ovens and irons again today, so I like to work when it's cool outside and in. Here in Alberta, air conditioning is a waste of money. We don't generally have HOT weather for more than a day or two at a time.(except this year where it's been nothing but HOT lol) Bare with me. By the afternoon I should be exhausted!

Lets get on with it. You guys are about to see what makes a girl like me swoon...I am SO excited.

The other day I was running a few errands with my "Miss Busy" (AKA Ashlyn) who is now a 16 year old girl who on occasion will go shopping with her mother, but in general she prefers the company of other 16 year old girls...and boys...and they REALLY like to drive around endlessly. (insert eyeroll here)

Anyway...I ended up in a little store owned by one of my friends. She ALWAYS has what the Cowboy and I call 'the good stuff'. Her dad has a fairly good stash of antiques and what we consider REALLY good junk that he will on occasion bring into Angie's shop to sell. When I know he's added new stuff, I rush over to check it out and I rarely am disappointed. Angie often laughs at my excitement over what she considers ridiculous junk. Did I mention Angie's daughter is also 16 and is Miss Busy's best friend?

A few days ago I got the tip off that she had new stuff...and I dropped everything, grabbed Miss Busy and we headed over to the shop. I wasn't in there 2 minutes and I was squealing with excitement!

I love containers...wooden boxes...crates...anything that I can arrange things in to make displays...but never have I had the chance to buy a round crate until this day. Did I mention I was excited? Well that's an understatement! Not only did I find an old wooden barrel, and an old grape box, but I found a wooden Christmas orange box! ....and ...AND I found an antique round wooden cheese box!

I did not know Japanese oranges came in wooden boxes! The Cowboy is only a few months older than I am and he said he remembers this...I do not. So...I am enjoying this one!

It will most likely not get changed in any way, but will become fun storage in my work room. Have I mentioned that I LOVE boxes and canisters, and containers of all sorts? Ya. I have always loved to be organized, and pretty storage containers are an obsession of mine. I probably have enough canister sets in my possession to outfit an entire apartment building. Definitely not something my kids needed to purchase as they struck out on their own. (insert eye roll from them here lol)

anyway...back to the good stuff....

Angie told me what she knew of these pieces. When he was a young man, her grandfather started a grocery store in Hudsons Bay Saskatchewan. These boxes were saved when he received shipments. They have been around for decades. The grocery store business was good to the family. Eventually, Angie's dad took over for his dad, and then Angie and her husband kept the business in the family and own it to this day. The barrel, grape box, orange box and cheese box were on display in the store for years. They have done some changes and no longer needed as many so here I am! Playing up a storm.

I love grape boxes. I already have several. My favourite is one from inside the old house we have and are working to renovate. I found it in the attic a few years ago. I have it sitting on my dining room table. I just picked up a three small flower arrangements and plopped them in it, I also have a coffee cup in the back that holds pens and paper for quick notes. The two at the front hide the ugly from the cup of pens, so it works perfectly for us! There is another one that I hung on the wall in the old house in the bathroom. It works as a rustic shelf for decorative antique medicine bottles.

I decided to find out a little bit more about my most beautiful find. The round cheese box. From what I can tell, this box is most likely from between 1930-1950. Cheese boxes were originally a tool used for transporting cheeses in branded boxes with lids. The brand on this one seems to be Swift Canadian Co. I tried for several days to learn about the Swift Candian Co. in Yorkton Saskatchewan, but there was nothing at all that I could find about them online. Obviously there was a creamery there, as it says so right on the box, but I could find nothing.

Round cheese boxes were first used in 1890 to ship cheese from Europe. These boxes were typically made of maple, ash, or hickory sides which were nailed to pine wood pieces on the top and bottom. The wood was usually printed with the name of the farm or factory and the type of cheese. The box helped protect the cheese from tipping over during transport.

...And now it's MINE MINE MINE!

Did I mention all the eye rolling Miss Busy did when her mother was excitedly rushing to the till with her treasures? Oh yes...she was...and still is. (She was texting Angie's daughter probably looking for someone to rescue her)

I adore this piece and can't wait to find the perfect location in my house to show it off. I did consider placing it in the Cowboy's office, but decided that it just didn't mesh with all of the taxidermy and trophy heads he has hanging all over the place in there. (ya...I am not overly crazy about all the dead things he has in there...but I love that man, and he doesn't complain that my little business takes up a lot of space in our house, so he can have them. And... as long as I don't have to touch any of them...I'm a happy girl)

The lid removes easily, and it is clean and odor free...I can't wait for inspiration to hit and the perfect spot to reveal itself! It's quite large...I could put one of my bigger sergers in it to store...or a huge silk flower arrangement...I just can't decide.

That's it for me today! I'm off to get some work done! I am making some fabulous new giftware pieces to add to my line today!

TIC TAC TOE...I WIN!

Today I am sharing a project I have done through my company for one of my biggest accounts.

I had picked up a few of these for a friend last month, and they were a hit!

The person for whom I got them, loved them so much that she asked me to see if the original maker was interested in making some for her gift shop. Turns out, that the person who made the ones I bought was not interested in making more to sell, so I blurted out "I could TOTALLY make those...they would be simple to do" ...and here we are!

It's camping, lake, cabin- well OUTDOOR season here in Canada, and that means we need to have things that are durable and can be left outside, even when it's windy or wet. We love to sit around and relax and hang out on our beautifully decorated decks ...so why not have something to do?

If you have ever been out to eat with a kid, and the server brings the placemat with all the games on it, you know there will be a game of tic tac toe on there somewhere and it will FOR SURE get played...WHO DOESN'T like to enjoy a quick game every now and then?

Well...now some lucky customers are going to have a rustic wooden version of tic tac toe to play while they hang out in the great outdoors! What a fabulous way to get us to put our phones down and do something with ourselves once and a while!

I started out with a 4x4 post, and some scraps of fence/deck board. I measured the width of the deck board, and used that number to determine the size of the 4x4 blocks I would cut.

I cut 9 blocks and put them in a square. 3blocks X 3blocks.

I then measured the width of the blocks from both directions to be sure that they could be placed in any order, I added 1/2 inch to that number and cut two pieces of the fence board to size. I then added the depth of the fence board to my measurement of the blocks and cut two more pieces to create the sides of the box. I screwed them all together in the shape of a square and made sure it fit around the blocks.

I then cut two more pieces of deck board to create the bottom of the box and attached them to the square.

After I was sure everything fit into the box, I proceeded to add a bit of stain to the cut ends of the wood to make it all look nice.

I then added an "X" and an "O" to the ends of each block. (each block got an X and an O)

Done!

I love the look of these! They are functional decor! Rustic, and durable and perfect for outside...or inside if your decor allows for that!

This project was SO easy to do too! Anyone could do it! The hardest part of this project for me was not making them PERFECT. They are supposed to look rustic and kind of primitive. I had to keep reminding myself that a few flaws are important to complete the look!

Where would you put one? I think I might need to make one for our family- just so that we have one around for the grandkid(s) to play with when they visit, or for us to enjoy when we have a minute!!

I have several more sets in various colours to do up for my customer...and she anticipates that they will fly off the shelves in her gift shop!
