Paying with Your Face

Face-detecting systems in China now authorize payments, provide access to facilities, and track down criminals. Will other countries follow?

Shortly after walking through the door at Face++, a Chinese startup valued at roughly a billion dollars, I see my face, unshaven and looking a bit jet-lagged, flash up on a large screen near the entrance.

Having been added to a database, my face now provides automatic access to the building. It can also be used to monitor my movements through each room inside. As I tour the offices of Face++ (pronounced “face plus plus”), located in a suburb of Beijing, I see it appear on several more screens, automatically captured from countless angles by the company’s software. On one screen a video shows the software tracking 83 different points on my face simultaneously. It’s a little creepy, but undeniably impressive.

Over the past few years, computers have become incredibly good at recognizing faces, and the technology is expanding quickly in China in the interest of both surveillance and convenience. Face recognition might transform everything from policing to the way people interact every day with banks, stores, and transportation services.

Technology from Face++ is already being used in several popular apps. It is possible to transfer money through Alipay, a mobile payment app used by more than 120 million people in China, using only your face as credentials. Meanwhile, Didi, China’s dominant ride-hailing company, uses the Face++ software to let passengers confirm that the person behind the wheel is a legitimate driver. (A “liveness” test, designed to prevent anyone from duping the system with a photo, requires people being scanned to move their head or speak while the app scans them.)

The technology figures to take off in China first because of the country’s attitudes toward surveillance and privacy. Unlike, say, the United States, China has a large centralized database of ID card photos. During my time at Face++, I saw how local governments are using its software to identify suspected criminals in video from surveillance cameras, which are omnipresent in the country. This is especially impressive—albeit somewhat dystopian—because the footage analyzed is far from perfect, and because mug shots or other images on file may be several years old.

Facial recognition has existed for decades, but only now is it accurate enough to be used in secure financial transactions. The new versions use deep learning, an artificial-intelligence technique that is especially effective for image recognition because it makes a computer zero in on the facial features that will most reliably identify a person (see “10 Breakthrough Technologies 2013: Deep Learning”).

“The face recognition market is huge,” says Shiliang Zhang, an assistant professor at Peking University who specializes in machine learning and image processing. Zhang heads a lab not far from the offices of Face++. When I arrived, his students were working away furiously in a dozen or so cubicles. “In China security is very important, and we also have lots of people,” he says. “Lots of companies are working on it.”

Employees simply show their face to gain entry to the company’s headquarters.

One such company is Baidu, which operates China’s most popular search engine, along with other services. Baidu researchers have published papers showing that their software rivals most humans in its ability to recognize a face. In January, the company proved this by taking part in a TV show featuring people who are remarkably good at identifying adults from their baby photos. Baidu’s system outshined them.

Face++ pinpoints 83 points on a face. The distance between them provides a means of identification.

Now Baidu is developing a system that lets people pick up rail tickets by showing their face. The company is already working with the government of Wuzhen, a historic tourist destination, to provide access to many of its attractions without a ticket. This involves scanning tens of thousands of faces in a database to find a match, which Baidu says it can do with 99 percent accuracy.

Jie Tang, an associate professor at Tsinghua University who advised the founders of Face++ as students, says the convenience of the technology is what appeals most to people in China. Some apartment complexes use facial recognition to provide access, and shops and restaurants are looking to the technology to make the customer experience smoother. Not only can he pay for things this way, he says, but the staff in some coffee shops are now alerted by a facial recognition system when he walks in: “They say, ‘Hello, Mr. Tang.’”

“Go, go!” was the thought racing through Grégoire Courtine’s mind.

The French neuroscientist was watching a macaque monkey as it hunched aggressively at one end of a treadmill. His team had used a blade to slice halfway through the animal’s spinal cord, paralyzing its right leg. Now Courtine wanted to prove he could get the monkey walking again. To do it, he and colleagues had installed a recording device beneath its skull, touching its motor cortex, and sutured a pad of flexible electrodes around the animal’s spinal cord, below the injury. A wireless connection joined the two electronic devices.

The result: a system that read the monkey’s intention to move and then transmitted it immediately in the form of bursts of electrical stimulation to its spine. Soon enough, the monkey’s right leg began to move. Extend and flex. Extend and flex. It hobbled forward. “The monkey was thinking, and then boom, it was walking,” recalls an exultant Courtine, a professor with Switzerland’s École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.

In recent years, lab animals and a few people have controlled computer cursors or robotic arms with their thoughts, thanks to a brain implant wired to machines. Now researchers are taking a significant next step toward reversing paralysis once and for all. They are wirelessly connecting the brain-reading technology directly to electrical stimulators on the body, creating what Courtine calls a “neural bypass” so that people’s thoughts can again move their limbs.

At Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, a middle-aged quadriplegic—he can’t move anything but his head and shoulder—agreed to let doctors place two recording implants in his brain, of the same type Courtine used in the monkeys. Made of silicon, and smaller than a postage stamp, they bristle with a hundred hair-size metal probes that can “listen” as neurons fire off commands.

To complete the bypass, the Case team, led by Robert Kirsch and Bolu Ajiboye, also slid more than 16 fine electrodes into the muscles of the man’s arm and hand. In videos of the experiment, the volunteer can be seen slowly raising his arm with the help of a spring-loaded arm rest, and willing his hand to open and close. He even raises a cup with a straw to his lips. Without the system, he can’t do any of that.

Just try sitting on your hands for a day. That will give you an idea of the shattering consequences of spinal cord injury. You can’t scratch your nose or tousle a child’s hair. “But if you have this,” says Courtine, reaching for a red espresso cup and raising it to his mouth with an actor’s exaggerated motion, “it changes your life.”

The Case results, pending publication in a medical journal, are a part of a broader effort to use implanted electronics to restore various senses and abilities. Besides treating paralysis, scientists hope to use so-called neural prosthetics to reverse blindness with chips placed in the eye, and maybe restore memories lost to Alzheimer’s disease (see “10 Breakthrough Technologies 2013: Memory Implants”).

And they know it could work. Consider cochlear implants, which use a microphone to relay signals directly to the auditory nerve, routing around non-working parts of the inner ear. Videos of wide-eyed deaf children hearing their mothers for the first time go viral on the Internet every month. More than 250,000 cases of deafness have been treated.

In this video made by EPFL researchers, a monkey with a spinal cord injury that paralyzed its right leg is able to walk again.

But it’s been harder to turn neural prosthetics into something that helps paralyzed people. A patient first used a brain probe to move a computer cursor across a screen back in 1998. That and several other spectacular brain-control feats haven’t had any broader practical use. The technology remains too radical and too complex to get out of the lab. “Twenty years of work and nothing in the clinic!” Courtine exclaims, brushing his hair back. “We keep pushing the limits, but it is an important question if this entire field will ever have a product.”

Courtine’s laboratory is located in a vertiginous glass-and-steel building in Geneva that also houses a $100 million center that the Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss funded specifically to solve the remaining technical obstacles to neurotechnologies like the spinal cord bypass. It’s hiring experts from medical-device makers and Swiss watch companies and has outfitted clean rooms where gold wires are printed onto rubbery electrodes that can stretch as our bodies do.

The head of the center is John Donoghue, an American who led the early development of brain implants in the U.S. (see “Implanting Hope”) and who moved to Geneva two years ago. He is now trying to assemble in one place the enormous technical resources and talent—skilled neuroscientists, technologists, clinicians—needed to create commercially viable systems.

Among Donoghue’s top priorities is a “neurocomm,” an ultra-compact wireless device that can collect data from the brain at Internet speed. “A radio inside your head,” Donoghue calls it, and “the most sophisticated brain communicator in the world.” The matchbox-size prototypes are made of biocompatible titanium with a sapphire window. Courtine used an earlier, bulkier version in his monkey tests.

As complex as they are, and as slow as progress has been, neural bypasses are worth pursuing because patients desire them, Donoghue says. “Ask someone if they would like to move their own arm,” he says. “People would prefer to be restored to their everyday self. They want to be reanimated.”

Elon Musk’s new Tesla compensation plan only pays if he delivers

Elon Musk’s new Tesla compensation package is the CEO equivalent of putting your money where your mouth is: He’ll only be paid out if he manages to raise the value of Tesla as a company to certain milestones, kind of like Kickstarter project stretch goals on a grand scale.

Per the New York Times, Musk’s compensation will start at zero, and will increase based on incremental targets beginning at a $100 billion market value threshold, with boosts coming at every $50 billion increment after that, going all the way up to a total valuation of $650 billion for Tesla. Put in perspective, the company is currently worth just under $60 billion based on its share price.

Musk’s compensation, should he hit these targets, will be paid out in the form of stock awards, and under the terms of the deal, even once his awarded shares vest, he has to hold them for five more years prior to selling in order to satisfy the conditions of the agreement. That means he can’t do anything tricky like artificially inflate the value of the company in the short-term in order to profit personally.

This isn’t a drastic departure from Musk’s existing plan, as the Times points out. Instead, it’s structured very similarly, but with much larger market value targets to hit. If Tesla can manage to make the top one, for instance, it’ll be among the highest valued companies in the world. Even so, Musk managed to meet all but the very highest of his payout thresholds for that plan.

The pay plan seeks to keep Musk around for the long haul, and it works out for shareholders because the only way they pay out is if the Tesla CEO delivers. It’s definitely good news for fans of Musk and what he’s done with Tesla thus far.

Apple grows fleet of self-driving test cars to 27

Apple has expanded its autonomous vehicle test fleet, according to Bloomberg, jumping from just three cars registered with the California DMV last year, to 27 vehicles in total now.

The fleet consists entirely of Lexus RX450h SUVs, a popular choice for anyone working on autonomous car tech because they can be fairly easily retrofitted with aftermarket sensors to complement those on board and be ready for testing. Apple has been adding new cars to its fleet since around July of last year, according to the report.

Apple’s efforts around AV development have focused primarily on software and machine learning, according to earlier reports, papers published in machine learning journals and other signals. Observers who’ve seen the hardware Apple is testing out in public on California roads near its Cupertino HQ theorize that the array Apple uses atop its cars includes not only sensors, but also computer hardware, too.

It’s not clear yet whether this would suggest what Apple intends to ultimately ship is some kind of aftermarket modification for existing cars, but earlier reports about it scaling back some of its efforts and Tim Cook’s own previous statements indicate that it’s focused primarily on systems, rather than vehicles themselves.

Imagine if one day your blog just disappeared.
It’s a terrifying thought, right?
You put all that work into writing amazing content and developing an audience. The last thing you want is for it all to go up in a puff of smoke because of some technical issue or hacker.
But if you don’t back up your website regularly, that’s exactly what would happen if something ever went wrong.
Thankfully, I have some good news for you:
Backing up your website isn’t something you need a developer for. Heck, it’s not even that complicated.
And with the right WordPress backup plugin, you’ll be able to sleep easy knowing that no matter what happens to your site, you can always have it up and running again in no time.
To help you get started on the right foot with WordPress backups, I’m going to spend this post going through six WordPress backup plugins and helping you choose the one that’s right for you.
But first…

Here’s What to Look For in a WordPress Backup Plugin

While the backup plugin that you eventually choose will depend on your personal preferences, there are a few key features you should at least consider when making your choice:
Does the plugin offer automation? Automated backups let you “set it and forget it.” In other words, it keeps you from having to remember to do it manually every week/month/whatever time frame.
Does the plugin take full or partial backups? All the plugins on this list offer full site backups. But if you search elsewhere, you will find some plugins that will only back up specific parts of your websites, like just your database or theme.
How does the plugin handle restoring from backups? Some plugins give you built-in tools, while others require you to manually upload the files and import your database.
Does the plugin work with remote storage? If the plugin doesn’t let you back up to remote storage, you’ll be entirely responsible for keeping your backup files safe. Some plugins will store your backups on your server, which can still be useful, but won’t help you if your server gets wiped clean.
Does the plugin offer site migrations? This is the least important question. But if you think you’ll move your site often — like from a local staging site (that you use for tests) to your live site — this feature comes in handy.

The 6 Best Backup Plugins Compared in Detail

In order to help you make your decision, I want to give you an actual idea how these plugins function in the real world. So, in addition to giving you each plugin’s feature list, I’ll also show you the actual process for how you can use the plugin to back up and restore your website.
Let’s dive in…

#1: UpdraftPlus

By the numbers, UpdraftPlus is the most popular backup plugin at WordPress.org. It also has a staggering five-star rating on over 2,672 reviews to help explain its popularity.
So, why do so many people like UpdraftPlus? Probably because it gives you nearly all of the points I discussed above without charging a penny (though there is a premium version with more features).
Here’s what you get with UpdraftPlus:
Manual or automatic backups (based on a schedule that you define)
Full-site backups or backups of specific parts of your site (like your database)
Easy restore from backup via a dedicated tool
Off-site backup to Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3, and more
UpdraftVault dedicated backup storage, which is basically a dedicated cloud storage service for UpdraftPlus (storage costs extra, though)
In fact, the only feature that you might miss in the free version is a dedicated site migration tool. If you do want that migration feature, though, you can always purchase UpdraftPlus premium starting at $70.

WHO IS UPDRAFTPLUS GOOD FOR?

UpdraftPlus is the plugin I recommend for most casual bloggers because it strikes a good balance between flexibility/features and ease of use.
But while it’s easy to use, it’s not the easiest to use. We have other plugins on this list that simplify the process even more. (Of course, those may have other downsides for you.)

HOW TO TAKE A BACKUP WITH UPDRAFTPLUS

Once you install and activate UpdraftPlus, you can access its settings by heading to Settings → UpdraftPlus.
To run a manual backup, you just need to click the big blue Backup Now button:
Then, you can choose whether to back up your entire site, or just a specific part:
And that’s all there is to it! Depending on the size of your site, the backup may take a few minutes to create.
Once it’s finished, you can download the files to your computer by visiting the Existing Backups tab:
Something to note about UpdraftPlus is that it divides its backups into different files. You need to download all five files to have the full backup of your site.
Of course, one of the benefits of UpdraftPlus is that you don’t actually have to manually run your backups.
If you want to set up automated backups and/or off-site backups, you can do that by going to the plugin’s Settings tab, and choosing how often you’d like to run a backup:
As you can see on the image above, you can also choose a remote storage option, so you don’t have to rely on the backups on your server.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR SITE FROM BACKUP WITH UPDRAFTPLUS

UpdraftPlus lets you restore from backup in two ways.
First, you can run a one-click restore by going to the Existing Backups tab and clicking the Restore button:
Note: This only works if the backup you want to restore from is still on your server.
Second, you can upload a set of backup files from your own computer or from remote storage. You’ll need to upload all five backup data files to get a full backup.

#2: BackWPup

BackWPup is another popular WordPress backup plugin with over 600,000 active installs.
Here’s what you get with this plugin:
Full or partial site backups
Automated backups via a few different methods
Off-site backup to Dropbox, email, S3 services, and others (Google Drive is not available in the free version, though)
And here’s one unique, though niche, BackWPup feature:
The free version works with WordPress MultiSite. Most WordPress backup plugins lock MultiSite support behind their Pro versions.
You may notice one feature missing from this list, though — BackWPup does not offer a tool to restore from backup. You’ll have to do that manually.

WHO IS BACKWPUP GOOD FOR?

BackWPup is more flexible than UpdraftPlus in certain aspects as it offers more customization options when it comes to how and what to backup. But those same customization options make the plugin less user-friendly than UpdraftPlus and might feel overwhelming to casual bloggers.
For example, you can run backups via WP-CLI, export backups as WordPress XML files, trigger backups by visiting an external URL, and more.
If you’re a WordPress beginner, that might all sound like gibberish to you, which is okay, because you won’t need those options. But advanced WordPress users should appreciate them, especially the WP-CLI integration.
So unless you want those advanced options, I recommend you choose one of the simpler backup plugins on this list.

HOW TO TAKE A BACKUP WITH BACKWPUP

To start running backups with BackWPup, you need to create a Job. A Job is basically any task that you want the plugin to complete:

As well as whether to run that job manually or via some type of automation:
From the screenshots above, I think you’ll be able to see why I don’t recommend this plugin for beginners. Unless you’re a power WordPress user, terms like WordPress cron and WP-CLI mean nothing to you.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR SITE FROM BACKUP WITH BACKWPUP

Again, BackWPup does not currently offer a dedicated restore-from-backup tool. Instead, you’ll need to manually restore your site by uploading the actual files via FTP and importing your database.
While that’s not too hard to do, this is another reason why BackWPup is not a great option for beginners.
The developers are working on adding a restore tool to their plugin, though, so this may change in the near future.

#3: VaultPress/Jetpack

VaultPress is part of the Jetpack plugin from Automattic, the same company behind WordPress.com. It’s designed to make things as easy as possible for you to both back up and restore your site (if needed). Essentially, it puts your backups on autopilot.
That means:
Automatic daily and real-time backups. Yes — real-time means that any time you make a change on your site, that change gets synched right away.
30 days of backup storage in the VaultPress cloud
One-click restores from the VaultPress interface
Easy migrations — restore to different sites with the click of a button
And beyond backups, on the higher tier plans, VaultPress also scans your site for vulnerabilities and helps you fix any problems that it discovers.
Sounds pretty slick, right? So what’s the catch? Well, unlike all of the other plugins on this list, there’s no free version.
If you want to use VaultPress, you have to pay their yearly fee.

WHO IS VAULTPRESS GOOD FOR?

In terms of pure ease of use, VaultPress is the best option for beginners and casual WordPress users. It’s simple and pretty much hands-free. There is a small one-time setup to enable one-click restores, but once you complete that, VaultPress requires essentially zero manual input.
So if you’re looking for the absolute easiest WordPress backup solution, this is it. Just remember that you’re going to pay $39 per year for that ease of use, whereas something like UpdraftPlus is almost as simple without the price tag.

HOW TO TAKE A BACKUP WITH VAULTPRESS

Even though VaultPress is part of the Jetpack subscription plan, it’s technically a separate plugin. So before you can get started taking backups, you’ll need to install and activate both Jetpack and VaultPress. The process is straightforward, but if you need help you can find instructions for both Jetpack and VaultPress.
Once you have both those plugins up and running, VaultPress automatically starts working. While you don’t technically need to configure anything for it to take your first backup, if you have a large site, you might want to give VaultPress remote access through SSH or FTP to speed up the process:

Once VaultPress completes your first backup, you can manage all your backups from the VaultPress interface. If you want, you can also download physical copies to your local computer for safekeeping:

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR SITE FROM BACKUP WITH VAULTPRESS

To enable one-click restores, you’ll first need to give VaultPress remote access to your site (if you haven’t already configured it to speed up your backups).
Again, if you’re not sure just how to do that, give this support article a read. Or you can always reach out to Jetpack/VaultPress support and/or your host’s support team.
Once you complete that one-time setup process, all you need to do to restore your site is click a button in the VaultPress interface:

#4: Duplicator

Duplicator is a popular and well-rated WordPress migration plugin. Because there’s a good deal of overlap between what happens when you migrate a site and what happens when you backup/restore a site, Duplicator functions great as a backup tool as well.
That said, many of the backup features that come for free in the other plugins are only available in the paid Duplicator Pro plugin.
Here’s what you can do in the free version of the plugin:
Download a full site backup
Fairly easy restore from backup (though it’s not a one-click restore)
Easy site migrations
And if you upgrade to Duplicator Pro, here’s what you’ll get:
Scheduled backups
Off-site storage at Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3
Special support for extra-large websites

WHO IS DUPLICATOR GOOD FOR?

Duplicator is a good option for intermediate users and above.
As someone who works with WordPress for a living, I find it convenient and often use it to move sites around and back them up. But I don’t believe it’s as good an option for beginners as tools like UpdraftPlus or VaultPress.
Here’s how it shakes out:
If you’re comfortable using FTP, you might enjoy this plugin for its convenience and flexibility. But if you just want a simple backup utility, some of the other plugins are better suited for you.

HOW TO TAKE A BACKUP WITH DUPLICATOR

To back up your site with Duplicator, you’ll need to create something called a Package.
A Package consists of two files:
Installer — contains a setup wizard that helps you migrate or restore your site
Archive — contains a complete backup of your WordPress site
Put together, those two files are all you need to completely back up your WordPress site.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR SITE FROM BACKUP WITH DUPLICATOR

Whether you’re migrating your site or restoring your site from backup, Duplicator uses the same process.
It’s not as simple as something like UpdraftPlus, but it is more streamlined than the completely manual process offered by BackWPup.
Basically, you’ll need to use FTP or cPanel to upload both files to the server where you want to restore or migrate your site.
Then you can go to yourdomain.com/installer.php and follow the plugin’s four-step wizard to restore your site. The only slightly technical thing that you’ll need to do is create an empty database for Duplicator to connect to (here’s how to do that in cPanel, the most common hosting management tool):

#5: BackUpWordPress

BackUpWordPress is a backup plugin from Human Made, one of the largest WordPress development agencies. In addition to working with enterprise clients like USA Today, they’ve also created some of their own products like BackUpWordPress.
With BackUpWordPress, you can:
Take complete site backups or database backups
Create separate schedules for complete backups and database backups
If you upgrade to the Pro version starting at $29, you’ll also get the ability to back up to off-site storage like Google Drive, DropBox, Amazon S3 and more.

WHO IS BACKUPWORDPRESS GOOD FOR?

BackUpWordPress is a great option for casual users who want something that works out of the box. There’s literally nothing you need to configure — just activate and go.
On the other hand, it doesn’t currently offer a dedicated restore function. That means the simplicity only extends to actually backing up your site, not restoring it.
Also, in the free version, you don’t get remote storage, so you have to manually download your backups on a regular basis.

HOW TO TAKE A BACKUP WITH BACKUPWORDPRESS

As I mentioned, you don’t actually need to do anything after activating the plugin. By default, BackUpWordPress starts off with backups already scheduled.
It will:
Back up your database every day
Back up your entire site every week
If you want, you can always manually create a backup by clicking Run now:
And you can also change the default schedule by clicking on Settings:
In the free version, you’ll then need to manually download your backups to your local computer in order to ensure that you always have a working copy available. While the plugin will store backups on your server (according to your settings), this is not a safe way to store your backups long-term because if something happens to your server, you’ll be unable to access your backups.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR SITE FROM BACKUP WITH BACKUPWORDPRESS

Again, BackUpWordPress does not have a dedicated restore function. To restore your site from backup, you’ll need to upload all of the files via FTP and import your database via phpMyAdmin.

#6: All-in-One WP Migration

Like Duplicator, All-in-One WP Migration is a migration plugin that serves double duty as a backup plugin. One thing that’s nice about All-in-One WP Migration, though, is that it offers a simpler restore process than Duplicator.
The plugin gives you:
Full or partial backups
Easy restore from backup
Functionalities that make migrating your site a breeze
You can also purchase individual premium extensions for off-site backups at cloud storage providers like Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and more.
There’s no way to put your backups on an automatic schedule, though.

WHO IS ALL-IN-ONE WP MIGRATION GOOD FOR?

Because it lacks scheduled backups, All-in-One WP Migration is good for users who are willing (or even prefer) to handle things manually.
One advantage that All-in-One WP Migration has over some of the other backup plugins is that it gives you a good deal of control over which files you export, which is helpful if you only want to take partial backups.
Most of the time, you’ll probably want to take full backups anyway, so this isn’t a huge advantage for casual users. But partial backups can be helpful if you’re running an especially large site where taking a full backup every day takes up too much space and/or processing power.
For example, if you use tons of high-resolution images that don’t change very often, it’s a waste of resources to back up those files every single time you take a backup.
For most casual users, one of the plugins that focuses specifically on backups will offer a more streamlined solution.

HOW TO TAKE A BACKUP WITH ALL-IN-ONE WP MIGRATION

To create a backup of your site, you need to Export it. You can export your entire site or exclude certain elements by using the Advanced options:
Once you export your site, the plugin will prompt you to save the file to your computer (or your offsite location if you purchase a premium extension). And the files will also show up in the Backups tab of the plugin.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR SITE FROM BACKUP WITH ALL-IN-ONE WP MIGRATION

To restore your site from a backup, you have two options.
First, you can go to the Backups tab and click the restore button:

Mark Wahlberg and his agents at WME have spun hard into damage control mode today, announcing that the actor—who was recently blasted in the public sphere for negotiating a $1.5 million reshoot fee on Ridley Scott’s All The Money In The World, while his co-star, Michelle Williams, was paid only a few thousand dollars for the same rushed work—will be giving the entire paycheck to Time’s Up, as a donation in Williams’ name. This is per The Hollywood Reporter, which quotes a statement from Wahlberg: “Over the last few days my reshoot fee for All The Money In The World has become an important topic of conversation. I 100 percent support the fight for fair pay and I’m donating the $1.5M to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams’ name.”

Critics were quick to bash Wahlberg after a USA Today piece revealed the pay disparity between himself and Williams, which only worsened when anonymous sources reported that he’d leveraged his contractual ability to approve or veto co-stars’ casting to finagle a bigger paycheck, by threatening to refuse to authorize Christopher Plummer’s replacement of Kevin Spacey. All of this was only exacerbated by the fact that Williams and Wahlberg are both represented by WME—albeit by different agents—with the agency apparently a whole lot better at pushing Wahlberg’s interests as a “blockbuster movie star” than Williams’ as merely a highly respected, Oscar-nominated actress. (Meanwhile, the agency is also making its own “please stop yelling at us” donation to Time’s Up today, to the tune of $500,000.)

If there are kids in the family, you should download either Tynker (Android/iOS) or the Hopscotch app for iPad and they can learn the basics of programming through games and puzzles.

There’s also Scratch, an MIT project that allows kids to program their own stories and games visually. Scratch is available as a web app or you can download it on your Mac/Windows/Linux computer for offline use. Microsoft TouchDevelop, Blockly and Alice are some other web apps that will introduce the concepts of computer progamming to your children.

The interest in PHP has dipped over the years, JavaScript has more or less maintained its position while the popularity of Python & Node.js is on the rise.

Google Adsense users were surprised on October 10 by stopping the account of views and profits and clicking after the accounts and then started to return on October 11, and on October 12 was issued a new interface for Google Adsense and to see the new interface will appear at the bottom of the page a new button name Try the new adsense interface , Click it, as in the following image

The page then starts loading and a pop-up window appears, press Start to start using the service as shown in the following image

Intel tried desperately to change the subject from Spectre and Meltdown at CES

Intel had a bad week last week.

It was so bad that the chip maker has to be thrilled to have CES, the massive consumer technology show going on this week in Las Vegas, as a way to change the subject and focus on the other work they are doing.

For starters, CEO Brian Krzanich had to deal with the elephant in the room at the company keynote on Monday. Spectre and Meltdown patches were coming to 90 percent of the company’s affected chips by next week. That was good news for a company under siege for what my colleague Ingrid Lunden described without exaggeration as “…perhaps its biggest security scare in its history.”

It didn’t help matters when Intel’s patch proved buggy and caused some systems to reboot.

In case you don’t know what that trouble was about, it began last week when The Register, a U.K. tech publication, published an article blowing the lid off an Intel kernel security problem in their CPU chips. This is not a small matter.

It has the potential to allow hackers unimpeded access to the chip’s kernel where information like your passwords and encryption keys are stored in a supposedly secure area of the chip architecture.

It later turned out there were actually two chip vulnerability problems, one that had an impact on mostly Intel chips called Meltdown (a single ARM chip is also affected) and one called Spectre that affected Intel and other chips, including AMD and ARM processors and even IBM’s Power chips. We also learned that another Intel rival, Nvidia, also announced several of its chips have been affected. (If you were running a Raspberry Pi computer, you were spared.)

Mitigation efforts have been coming fast and furious from every corner: from chip vendors, from the OS vendors like Microsoft and Apple and from very nearly everyone else. There is concern that the mitigation solutions could in fact slow down computers substantially. While it’s still not widely known just how much that will affect individual computers and servers, Microsoft published a blog post this week outlining their benchmarks showing various degrees of performance degradation after implementing the Spectre and Meltdown mitigation solutions on machines running Windows. So did Intel, which found some performance hits and Google, which claimed it didn’t have any.

While this wasn’t just an Intel problem, it is, as Lunden pointed out, “one of the world’s biggest chip makers,” and as such it bore the brunt of the bad reaction. It didn’t help that the company had been aware of the vulnerability for some time or that Krzanich had sold a substantial amount of stock in November, and had filed the intent to sell those shares after the company had learned about the bugs.

This week at CES, the company addressed the problem (at least to some extent), as Lunden reported, but a show like CES has the advantage of being a stage for a number of new technologies. The company began making a flurry of announcements, planned long before the chip flaws became public last week.

It started with the announcement of a 49 Qubit quantum computing chip. If you want to change the conversation, building one of the fastest quantum computing chips in the world is one way to do it (IBM announced in November that it had built a 50 qubit prototype).

In fact, the company made a total of six announcements that we covered at TechCrunch this week involving drones, autonomous cars and cinematic VR, among other things.

All of this seems to me to be about using various degrees of showmanship and technological acumen to try to change the subject. It’s likely that Meltdown and Spectre will continue to haunt Intel and other chip makers for some time to come.

While it’s important to note that there haven’t been any documented breaches from this vulnerability, it has created a serious perception problem for Intel and its competitors, especially since they have chosen from an engineering perspective to optimize their chips for speed over security for many years, paving the way for these vulnerabilities.

Given all of this, Intel has little choice but to keep dancing as fast it can, just like the drones it showed off earlier this week at CES.

Eliza Dushku accuses True Lies stunt coordinator Joel Kramer of sexually assaulting her when she was 12 years old

Eliza Dushku has accused a well-known and prolific Hollywood stunt coordinator of sexually assaulting her during the filming of True Lies, when the Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse actress was only 12 years old. Dushku posted a lengthy essay on Facebook last night, opening up about an incident from 25 years ago in which she says Joel Kramer—whose recent credits include high-profile projects like Blade Runner 2049, Star Trek: Discovery, and Westworld—first earned her and her family’s trust during her time on the Arnold Schwarzenegger action vehicle, and then abused it by luring her to a hotel room in the guise of letting her swim at the facility’s pool.

I remember vividly how he methodically drew the shades and turned down the lights; how he cranked up the air-conditioning to what felt like freezing levels, where exactly he placed me on one of the two hotel room beds, what movie he put on the television (Coneheads); how he disappeared in the bathroom and emerged, naked, bearing nothing but a small hand towel held flimsy at his mid-section. I remember what I was wearing (my favorite white denim shorts, thankfully, secured enough for me to keep on). I remember how he laid me down on the bed, wrapped me with his gigantic writhing body, and rubbed all over me. He spoke these words: “You’re not going to sleep on me now sweetie, stop pretending you’re sleeping,” as he rubbed harder and faster against my catatonic body. When he was “finished,” he suggested, “I think we should be careful…,” [about telling anyone] he meant. I was 12, he was 36.

Dushku goes on to outline how Kramer allegedly used his position as the film’s stunt coordinator—and, thus, the man responsible for her safety on the set of James Cameron’s stunt-heavy action thriller—to threaten and silence the 12-year-old child he had loudly, publicly nicknamed “Jailbait” in front of his co-workers. Specifically, she recalls how, on the same day a “tough adult female friend” confronted Kramer about his actions against Dushku, a stunt on the film’s set went “wrong,” putting the child actress in the hospital with broken ribs. “On a daily basis he rigged wires and harnesses on my 12-year-old body,” Dushku writes. “My life was literally in his hands: he hung me in the open air, from a tower crane, atop an office tower, 25+ stories high. Whereas he was supposed to be my protector, he was my abuser.”

Dushku says she told her family about Kramer’s actions, and that she had been under the impression that he had been “found out” and quietly ostracized from Hollywood. She says she decided to speak up about his treatment of her in light of the #MeToo movement, when she realized that he was still actively working, and not long after she says she saw an internet photo of him “hugging a young girl.”

Update: The Wrap has gotten a comment from Kramer on the accusations, with the stunt coordinator denying all of Dushku’s charges. “Wow. That’s news to me. I never sexually assaulted her,” he said. “She’s a sweet girl. We all looked out for her, that’s surprising,” he added, calling Dushku’s statements “absolute lies.” “I liked Eliza. We took care of her. Nobody every called her ‘Jailbait.’” He later “scoffed at the details of the story,” saying, “That’s a pretty good memory. She could ruin my career.”
