Buying ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 10.5 Hour Battery Life

I bought this to use when traveling within a developing country, where I need lots of battery life and don't feel like lugging around my conspicuous (and now heavy) 15" notebook.

I do a lot of LAMP work, so I wanted something I could set up to mirror my server. This machine is great for that. A small plug for Linux: I've installed 2 GB of RAM, but running Apache mpm-prefork, PHP, mysql, eCryptfs, compiz, Gnome, Firefox, OpenOffice, and JEdit under Ubuntu 9.04, I almost always have 1GB of RAM free. I haven't hit my swap yet in several weeks of heavy use, and performance has been more than satisfactory for what I do with it.

Pros:

Relatively easy to install Linux (just Google/Bing for "perfect ubuntu jaunty asus 1005ha"), if you know what you're doing and have access to another internet-connected computer (and 1GB+ blank USB drive) at the time. With a bit of tweaking, pretty much everything works, including all the hotkeys (except that as of this writing, bluetooth cannot be disabled in software to save power; try disabling it in the BIOS before boot). I can even run Compiz with "Normal" effects, including 2 virtual desktops and an excellent ExposÃ© knock-off. One caveat: Let the BIOS, not eeepc-tray, manage the fan speed. The BIOS knows best.

Good battery life under Linux (about 7.5 hours under light use).

Compact and portable without being too small.

Surprisingly readable screen for the size.

Good webcam.

Cons:

Glossy screen. Most of the time it's not an issue, but if you do any work outside, be prepared to squint and squirm.

Glossy everything else. The lid, palm rest and bezel start out glossy, then end up looking like the inside of a bus/train window where people regularly rest their greasy heads and hands. I've found that regular Turtle Wax CAREFULLY applied in multiple coats can limit, but not eliminate, this. Warnings: 1) Do not use "Polish Wax": it is abrasive; not sure what it would do to your computer. 2) Obviously, just apply the wax dry, no water. 3) If you get wax inside your computer, it can melt and break things, stop buttons/keys from working, etc.; be reasonably cautious. 4) DO NOT GET WAX ON YOUR SCREEN. I'm not sure what would happen, but I certainly don't want to try it with mine.

Single mouse button/bar. The mouse button is annoying. It's pretty (and also, shiny and then greasy), but I sometimes find myself hitting the middle by accident and getting frustrated. 2 buttons would be best; at the very least Asus could put a slight bump or dip in the middle to demarcate. It is a bit firm, but otherwise, it would be too easy to hit by accident.

Microphone and speakers are a bit weak, but that is expected in a power-saving machine like this.

Requires purchase of Windows, and thus, per Microsoft's desire, cannot include 2 GB of RAM. If given the choice, I would prefer to spend the money on the RAM (which I did anyway). It turns out that the Windows license and the RAM are about the same price at wholesale, so I would rather have the choice.

Upgrading the hard drive voids your warranty and is relatively difficult. I haven't done it yet, but I would just like the freedom to do it. If you want to upgrade your drive (to a 256GB SSD, e.g.), look into the 1000HE. It's bigger, heavier, and has less battery life, but it is much easier to upgrade internal components.

Advice:

As noted by at least one reviewer, add a 2GB 800 MHz (PC6400) SO-DIMM. If you're running Linux, this is a very well-supported netbook, like the 1000HE; if something's not working, wait a couple of weeks, and someone will probably get it working. I am deeply well impressed with this machine. It is small and light, but not too small, and yet light enough for you to carry anywhere at any time. The screen is just the right size and I got used to the keyboard size after just a couple of strokes. It truly delivers 10.5 hours of battery! I didn't believe it. I thought they said 10.5 hours to deliver about 8 hours nominal, but no, you charge it at home and you can spend the entire day working with it and the battery will last. Windows starter loaded in it is just enough, I have had if for 2 weeks now and still have not seen a missing feature I couldn't live without. I used to have a Sony Vaio 11.5" screen notebook, which was light and fast, but this ASUS is just as fast, lighter and packed with resources. My Vaio has become a desk ornament! From a person with very simplistic knowledge of computers, I wanted to add my comments because I rely so heavily on comments when making decisions on items to purchase. After all of the reviews I knew that this was the netbook for me. However, SAM's club only had the Acer D250 and it was cheaper, so I tried it for about 3 days. No major complaints, but felt like I married the wrong guy. I took it back and purchased this one. I could not be happier! I use the computer for writing (working on a big written project) and for browsing the internet, checking e-mail, and uploading pics of my children. I love this little thing so much, especially the fact that I don't have to plug in all day! That's the absolute greatest feature. However, there are other great features, including the keyboard, the general look, the speed of the machine on and off line, touchpad is okay-even better if you keep the plastic on it that covers it when you open the box, the weight is perfect. I'm so pleased that I chose this one and thanks to all of you who contribute your opinions and your knowledge. It's extremely helpful!!! ... Yes its a 300 dollar laptop. But the experience sucks. What you save in cash you pay for in frustration. Painfully slow. Tiny screen. Awful linux interface. Tiny postage stamp of a mouse pad. Keys that trip you up and cause you to delete whole sentences in a single slip (thank god for undo). Unimpressive battery life leaves you tethered to an outlet.

A year ago I bought this computer to write with, and my experience with it has taught me the value of not skimping on things like screen size, keyboard size, and mousepad size. It's not really feasible to reread your work on a monitor this size, and editing is so key for improving your writing. Forget web surfing. And if anything goes wrong, good luck fixing it, linux is still for techies, and completely unapologetic for the non technical crowd. Installing software feels like you're hacking the system.

Yes I still use this thing, so it can't be that bad. It IS light, you won't even notice it in your backpack. It's a nice color. It is relatively stable (but when it crashes it goes down hard).

When it works, it connects to the internet reasonably fast, and I can use google docs to write stories. But its painful to use this thing. Writing is hard enough.

As soon as a I can, I'm going to sell this thing, sell my imac, and get a macbook pro. ...

... I've had this Wind 100 for a little over a week and have yet to find a reason not to love the little guy. I added a Microsoft Blue Tooth mouse so as to leave the USB slots clear and that works well. During a presentation - real time video off a wireless hot spot projected on a Proxima no problems. At same time I used a pair of Logitec USB-powered mini speakers to pump up the sound. Worked flawlessly. Overall, the Wind seems to be a great value and with enough muscle to do most all of my daily tasks. ...and it's such a pleasure to be rid of Vista! ...

... This is one of the best cost-effective items I have ever bought. Have used for more than half a year. I used it heavily daily for a lot of the different tasks. Surfing web, watching movies, listening music, making video IP calls, I also use it to do Java and windows development. People doubt about the performance of a netbook, I believe it's un-necessary worry. I run Visual Studio 2008 for windows development without feel any pain. The machine is quiet, light. Use very less of power < 12w compare to normal laptop 30~40w and desktop 100~200W, it generates very less heat.

I always bring it during my travel, without feel any burden. Just like a small book put into my baggage. The size is just nice, a full size keyboard, you can type as fast as on a desktop. The screen size can view most of the website without any problem.

The machine builds in everything we need, Bluetooth, camera, wireless card, SD card reader which make me so confirmable when doing most of the tasks, such as using a Bluetooth earpiece to make a video call, you don't need to plug-in any extra cables.

It removed all the un-necessary things such as CD/DVD drivers make it so light and small. I can read PDF e-Book vertically just like hold a normal book. With that machine, you will never feel pain of reading e-book on a computer, you never need to make print copy of eBooks.

If for some task you really need large screen, you can just plugin an external LCD monitor, the video card is not bad, can support high resolution without any problem. No problem to play HD movies.

... I have a secured WIFI in my home, but this ASUS computer can not access it. [Three other computers do not have a problem with accessing it and neither do other people visiting with their own laptops or two wireless printers.] The ASUS documentation is limited. The verbatim steps given to sign on to a wireless network are:
"3. Select the wireless access point you want to connect to from the list and click 'Connect' to build the connection. Ensure that the box before 'Enable wireless' is checked.
"4. When connecting, you may have to enter a password.
"5. After a connection has been established, the connection is shown on the list."

Please note that the documentation assumes that one will never have a problem establishing a connection since it does not offer any suggestions or diagnostics if (as in my case)the connection lands in a indefinite state of "CONNECTION PENDING." Call the help desk? No telephone number or on-line help address is provided anywhere. To obtain this closely held corporate trade secret, I had to contact the vendor. Forty-eight hours after I sent an e-mail, the vendor sent me the elusive telephone number -- which of course is limited to only Monday through Friday, 9:00 PM TO 9:00 PM [Your guess is as good as mine as to the time zone for the ASUS service center.] Don't bother asking about whose nickle pays for the call. Reflective of the customer-be-damned orientation, it is not a toll free number. So be prepared to run up a lot of minutes waiting for the help desk response. To ASUS' credit (after a lengthy telephone call during which the help desk had to transfer me to a software enginner employed by the operating system provider), I got connected to the WIFI at my house. Since that one time, I have been unable to do so. And I don't think that the software engineer really knew what was the problem or what magical trick finally solved it. And lest you think that I have an esoteric off-brand WIFI system, the router is a very generic Netgear from Staples.

I want to return the item and go back to a local brick-and-mortar national chain and get a device that is designed to toss into a suitcase so one can merely check e-mail and access the internet while traveling. This or course means a capability to access the widest variety of WIFI networks. I thought that was the purpose behind this ASUS laptop, but someone forget about the importance for connectivity.

My problem is that there is a security block on the network at my house (which I do not know about) that the ASUS machine can not get around. And no one (the vendor, the manufacturer, the manufacturer's subcontractors or myself) knows how to diagnose or solve the problem. ...

... I tried the HP mininote and it is awful compared to the acer aspire. I got the mininote hoping the expresscard would save me time with data transfer but the first e.c. I bought didn't see the external drive I bought. The mininote's keyboard is horrid compared to the a.o.'s as they are like tiles and to hard to press down, not that they can't be pressed down but too hard for what a keyboard should be. The mininote is also ugly, it's a ugly silver-gold color. I bought a sticker for it to cover up the ugly shell but the sides and keyboard are still ugly. If you want more speed just wait for USB 3.0 or expresscard 2.0 to come out, I keep finding that expresscards are buggy and finnicky and can possibly ruin your internal and external drives if they are disconnected when in use. The mininote's screen is ugly no matter what resolution it's at, it has this flickering-like grainy look that reminds me of CRT's. The plastic covering over the screen is also ugly and makes the mininote appear to be cheap.

One more thing I utterly detest about this laptop is the ugly bright green-blue leds on the left and the bright blue led on the right which both face forward. They are always on except the blue one if your wi-fi is off I think and if the laptop is off of course they are off. Anyways those things make watching movies and just using the laptop a horrible nauseating experience as besides being ugly and a distraction, they remind me of nasty jelly-bellies and other jelly candies of the same color, EWWWWWWWW! Seriously. The lights are even on when the laptop is closed unless you turn the LT off completely. Another annoyance is that it wouldn't upgrade to SP3 if it wasn't connected to a power source (why?), I suppose this was to prevent bad installs, but the update feature has an automatic pause and recontinue feature so why doesn't it do this for the SP3 update? Also let's say you lost your power cord, so you have to wait for this till you buy or can borrow one? Absurd.

Pros: Great camera, great mic, decent speakers for the price. ...

... I've had three Aspire Ones now. The 3-cell battery 160 gb, the 3-cell battery 8+8 SSD and a 6-cell 160 gb (purchased and returned in that order). I love the Aspire One with a HD. The keyboard isn't all that bad, considering, it's very lightweight, and it really manages multitasking admirably given the size. (Logging in as multiple users at one time, however, is not such a good plan.)

The version I had with a SSD, however, was HORRIBLE. Completely unacceptable times to boot up and shut down. Half the point of a netbook is mobility, which typically means not just having it on you but also being able to whip it out during a 10-minute coffee break from your meeting. If the thing takes more than 2 full minutes to start up, it's not suiting that purpose.

On an aesthetic note, I originally had a white netbook and switched to sapphire blue. Found it darker than expected, could barely tell it was blue in many conditions under which I used it. I ended up switching back to white. More "pop," surprisingly, and I liked the white with white keyboard better than blue/black pairing. ...

Small, lightweight, portable with good screen resolution. Good sound thru headphones.
Con's:
No optical drive, keyboard not easy with big hands. With I should have gone with the 8G model.
General:
I changed the OS to eee Xubuntu which feels more familiar although not much more useful.
I carry the eee along with an external dvd burner, 110V and 12V(an option) power cords, an external HDD and a few discs in a Targus dvd carry case.

... I bought this little Asus 1000 to carry with me on my many motorcycle adventure trips. I wanted the ability to either transfer funds; pay bills while away, communicate with friends and relatives via my email capability and store the many photographs I take along the road during my trips, without having to worry about carrying multiple cards for my digital camera.

My biggest concern (or worry) was not having MS Windows and all of its attractive software to go along with me. I had never used Linux, nor did I know much about it. So therefore, it actually scared me. But being the daring individual I am, I bought it anyway!

I am so happy with this little system, I will try my best to list the many features that makes me feel the way I do about the little Asus 1000. The very first thing I noticed about it, is how clear and bright the screen is. It's almost as nice as my high-end Mitsubishi LCD HD television. Next, you can't help but notice how long the battery lasts. Although I have not actually timed it, I know I watched two full movies with my wife while I played with the functions and surfed the internet and I still had about a third of its time left on the battery. Wanting to test the wireless ability, I took it to my wife's place of employment where it captured 18 different WiFi signals, some as far away as 3-4 football fields. It plays music and videos perfectly, even without Windows Media Player. Nothing special to do, just click on a video that was emailed to you and it plays instantly fast. I really like the internet radio system it comes with. While camping at a KOA, I found over 20 stations that I liked, with three outstanding Country stations that I listened to with my head phones on while reading my email from friends. Although it has not yet happened yet, the only problem I can foresee is if someone sends me an email with a .doc file attached, I will not be able to open or read it because I don't have MS Word loaded. But that is fine with me. I use the Word type program to write my emails, being able to use spell check, then simply copy and paste to my email for sending.
Some other little things I really like:

1) Very attractive case.
2) Small and portable; easy to pack away.

4) Bright, clear and HD like screen.
5) Boots from startup in less than 20 seconds.
6) Shuts down in about 10 seconds.
7) Pretty much "Virus" un-impregnable.
8) Case holds Net book, charger, cables, memory sticks and mini-mouse.
9) Long range distance on the WiFi.
10) Bluetooth enabled
11) All programs very user friendly and upgradeable.
12) 3 USB ports
13) Large keyboard for a net book.
14) Easily added addition 1Gig of RAM, making it 2gig.
15) Great unbeatable price & very high quality!!!

Small, lightweight, portable with good screen resolution. Good sound thru headphones.
Con's:
No optical drive, keyboard not easy with big hands. With I should have gone with the 8G model.
General:
I changed the OS to eee Xubuntu which feels more familiar although not much more useful.
I carry the eee along with an external dvd burner, 110V and 12V(an option) power cords, an external HDD and a few discs in a Targus dvd carry case.

... We've had the MSI Wind for about a month now and so I feel its a good time to put in for a review on this great little mini-laptop, or what they call a "netbook".

I purchased the netbook for my wife after we had discovered these new mini laptops on the market, and had joked about getting one for our kids (7 and 8) who had asked for laptops last Christmas. At their affordable price ranging from $300 to $500, it was not that far out. We did end up agreeing that it was quite an expensive item for young kids to own but my wife has always wanted her own laptop and so she decided she'd like one.

Although it was her Christmas present and its technically her laptop, it is used for the whole family and the kids still get a big kick out of being able to use it and with our other two computers, the three boys can all play online simultaneously without fighting (as much). Its been very durable and powerful enough to do what they want to do, play games.

The wife gets her use out of it online with her shopping and such, without having to sit at one of our desks. She absolutely adores it and generally speaking it is perfect considering she doesn't have to do anything major on it at this point.

Now for a short technical opinion. I have only had one problem with the computer and it was not hardware related. Somehow the kids, being typical kids, downloaded something that may or may not have been malware infected, and it rendered the computer useless where it would not boot completely. Here's the great pitch: The restoration on this laptop was extremely fast and painless. Although my wife and kids had to wait til I got home to fix it, when I did so it took less than an hour to finish. The Wind comes with a 1.6 Ghz Atom processor (typical of new netbooks regardless of brand) and 1 gb of memory. The video is build in and does not handle some of the really high end games of course but I did a test, connecting the computer to an external usb 2.0 hard drive with WoW installed on it and it ran absolutely beautifully! The screen is 10.2" so its not as small as some of the other netbooks out there (usually 8.9") but still, for WoW, you'll probably have to have a good set of eyes to play it well without getting a headache. It didn't bother me at all. It also has a 120gb hdd on it, which remains mostly empty as my wife hasn't installed a lot on it. Hope that gives a good idea as to the power of this mini system.

Anyone that wants to have a laptop for portability, and for cheap, should consider the wind as their choice. ...

... I was in the market for a netbook that can play 1080p video and has HDMI out port. Incredibly, it was very hard to find one that fits the bill... and then I bumped into Asus N10J...

I picked up a slightly more beefed up Canadian version off eBay -- it is the same as N10J-A1 but has a bigger 250 GB hard drive and a "bilingual" keyboard which has a few French symbols on it (makes no difference to my typing experience whatsoever).

The laptop looks great and feels sturdy. Keyboard is slightly cramped. Smaller shift keys bothered me at first, but I am now back to typing without even looking at the keyboard.

Vista runs fine. 2 GB Ram and dedicated video card can handle the glassy shiny Aero without any problems. The only occasional slowdowns occur under heavy multi-tasking... which is not what netbooks are intended for anyway. Overall, I'm very happy with the performance.

What I really like is the ability to use N10J as a media center PC. First, it can play 1080p video with no issues whatsoever given it is set up properly. Here's a very helpful tutorial on how to get smooth full HD playback on this little monster:

Second, it delivers 5.1 sound via both HDMI port and a hybrid mini/SPDIF audio port. To get 5.1 audio via HDMI, you'll need to select nVidia Audio Output device via Control Panel => Sound.

Mini to SPDIF adapter is required for digital audio via the mini audio port. Actually, I recommend getting mini to SPDIF cable since there's signal loss with adapter + SPDIF cable combination.

Last, but not least, be sure to check out Asus N10 user community forums at [...] for helpful tips and tutorials.

I highly recommend this very portable yet very capable netbook. The price premium over less powerful machines is well worth it in my opinion. ...
