The latest X-Men movie from director Bryan Singer opened on Memorial Day weekend and made $233 million while it was in theaters. Despite a horrendous title and an often convoluted plot, the movie benefited from great performances by its stellar ensemble cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellan, and Patrick Stewart. With a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, many critics said Days of Future Past is the best film so far in the X-Men franchise. This was also one of the rare movies this year to exceed expectations. Over the four-day holiday weekend when it came out, the movie made $110.5 million, which beat studio Fox’s estimates that it would pull in around $100 million. The Jin Mao Tower is 10th tallest skyscraper of the world. Jin Mao Tower literally “Golden Prosperity Building” is an 88-story landmark supertall skyscraper in the Lujiazui area of the Pudong district of Shanghai, People’s Republic of China. It contains offices and the Shanghai Grand Hyatt hotel. Until 2007 it was the tallest building in the PRC, the fifth tallest in the world by roof height and the seventh tallest by pinnacle height.

9. Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago)

The Trump International Hotel and Tower is 9th highest building of the world. The Trump International Hotel and Tower, also known as Trump Tower Chicago and locally as the Trump Tower, is a skyscraper condo-hotel in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The building, named after real estate developer Donald Trump, was designed by architect Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Bovis Lend Lease built the 92-story structure, which reached a height of 1,389 feet (423 m) including its spire, its roof topping out at 1,170 feet (360 m). It is adjacent to the main branch of the Chicago River, with a view of the entry to Lake Michigan beyond a series of bridges over the river. The building received publicity when the winner of the first season of The Apprentice television show, Bill Rancic, chose to manage the construction of the tower.

Being 8th highest building Guangzhou West Tower is an extremely tall public building. The energy efficiency evaluation of its façade should be different than that of ordinary public buildings. Based on the national code GB50189-2005, “Design Standard for Energy efficiency of Public Buildings”, typical meteorological yearly data for Guangzhou were used and revised according to architectural character of Guangzhou West Tower. The energy efficiency design of a single skin facade and active airflow curtain wall was analyzed by a dynamic energy simulation tool and modified weather data. The payback period of initial investment in the facade system was evaluated based on simulation results. In addition, the results confirm the façade system scheme of Guangzhou West Tower.

7. Willis Tower (Chicago)

Willis Tower, formerly named Sears Tower, is a 108-story 1,451 feet (442 m) skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois. At the time of its completion in 1973, it was the tallest building in the world, surpassing the World Trade Center towers in New York. Currently, Willis Tower is the tallest building in the United States and the fifth-tallest freestanding structure in the world as well as the fifth tallest building in the world to the roof. Although Sears’ naming rights expired in 2003, the building continued to be called Sears Tower for several years. However, in March 2009 London-based insurance broker Willis Group Holdings, Ltd., agreed to lease a portion of the building and obtained the building’s naming rights as part of the agreement. On July 16, 2009, at 10:00 am Central Time, the building was officially renamed Willis Tower.

The Nanjing Greenland Financial Center is a 89-story, 450 meter (1500 foot) tall skyscraper being constructed in Nanjing, China. The tower is the fifth tallest building in the world and second tallest in china behind the Shanghai World Financial Center.The 72nd-story observation floor, at 287 meters (940 feet) off the ground, will offer a panoramic view of the city of Nanjing as well as the Yangtze River, the Ningzheng Ridge mountains and two nearby lakes.

The Petronas Twin Towers (also known as the Petronas Towers or just Twin Towers), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia are twin towers and were the world’s tallest buildings, before being surpassed by Taipei 101. However, the towers are still the tallest twin buildings in the world. They were the world’s tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004 if measured from the level of the main entrance to the structural top, the original height reference used by the US-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat from 1969 (three additional height categories were introduced as the tower neared completion in 1996).

International Commerce Centre is a 118 floor, 484 m (1,590 ft) skyscraper under construction in West Kowloon, Hong Kong; as part of the Union Square project built on top of Kowloon Station. Shanghai World Financial Center is a super-tall skyscraper in Pudong, Shanghai, China. It is a mixed use skyscraper which consists of offices, hotels, conference rooms, observation decks, and shopping malls on the ground floors. Park Hyatt Shanghai is the hotel component containing 174 rooms and suites. Occupying the 79th to the 93rd floors, it is the highest hotel in the world, surpassing the Grand Hyatt Shanghai on the 53rd to 87th floors of the neighboring Jin Mao Tower.

Taipei 101 also known as the Taipei Financial Center, is a landmark skyscraper located in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan. The building was the tallest building in the world (with occupiable floors) until it was surpassed in height by the Burj Khalifa on July 21, 2007. The skyscraper was officially the tallest building until the opening of the Burj Khalifa on the 4 of January 2010.

Burj Khalifa formerly known as Burj Dubai, is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the tallest man-made structure ever built, at 828 m (2,717 ft). Construction began on 21 September 2004, with the exterior of the structure completed on 1 October 2009. The building officially opened on 4 January 2010. The building is part of the 2 km2 (490-acre) flagship development called Downtown Burj Khalifa at the “First Interchange” along Sheikh Zayed Road, near Dubai’s main business district. The total cost for the Burj Khalifa project was about US$1.5 billion. The tower’s architecture and engineering were performed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill of Chicago. Adrian Smith, who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill until 2006, was the chief architect, and Bill Baker was the chief structural engineer for the project. The primary contractor was Samsung C&T of South Korea, who also built the Taipei 101 and Petronas Twin Towers.

What a daunting task it would be to write a list like this, but fortunately for us, Norton (of the Norton Anthologies) asked 125 of the greatest living writers to select their top 10, and then (using statistics) produced a final list of the ten greatest books ever written. I certainly agree with the majority of the selections. This is a list of the top 10 fictional books of all time – needless to say, if you have not read these books, you probably should.

10. Middlemarch

Middlemarch is considered by many scholars to be one of the most important novels of the Victorian era. It was written by George Eliot (pen name of Mary Anne Evans) and was first published in 1871 to 1872. It is set in the 1830s in Middlemarch, a fictional provincial town in England, based on Coventry.

9. The Stories of Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov was a Russian short story writer and playwright. He was born in Taganrog, southern Russia, on 29 January 1860. His originality consists in an early use of the stream-of-consciousness technique, later employed by Virginia Woolf and other modernists, combined with a disavowal of the moral finality of traditional story structure.

8. In Search of Lost Time

Marcel Proust

I appreciate the great artistic merit in Proust’s writing, but I have to be honest and say that I have never managed to get more than half way through the first book of this multiple-book novel. I found it extremely slow paced and boring. This is Proust’s most prominent work, it is popularly known for its extended length and the notion of involuntary memory, the most famous example being the “episode of the madeleine” in which he describes in great (boring) detail, eating a madeleine dipped in tea.

7. The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald

I agree with the inclusion of this book – it is one of my favorites and one of the best examples of Fitzgerald’s writing. The Great Gatsby is a tale from the Jazz age of Gatsby – a wealthy man whose life is surrounded by mystery. A brilliant read.

6. Hamlet

William Shakespeare

It is no surprise that Mr Shakespeare is on the list. I am not sure that I would have picked Hamlet as his best book, but who am I to debate 125 brilliant authors? Hamlet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, probably written between 1599 and 1601. The play, set in Denmark, recounts how Prince Hamlet exacts revenge on his uncle for murdering Hamlet’s father, the King, gaining the throne through this treachery, and subsequently marrying his mother.

5. The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnMark Twain

It is good to see such a great book for the younger generation on the list. Huckleberry Finn is commonly accounted as one of the first Great American Novels. It is also one of the first major American novels ever written using Local Color Regionalism, or vernacular, told in the first person by the eponymous Huckleberry “Huck” Finn, best friend of Tom Sawyer (hero of three other Mark Twain books).

4. LolitaVladimir Nabokov

Lolita was first written in English and published in 1955 in Paris. The novel is both internationally famous for its innovative style and infamous for its controversial subject: the book’s narrator and protagonist Humbert Humbert becoming sexually obsessed with a twelve-year-old girl named Dolores Haze.

War and Peace was first published from 1865 to 1869 in Russkii Vestnik, which tells the story of Russian society during the Napoleonic Era. It is usually described as one of Tolstoy’s two major masterpieces (the other being Anna Karenina) as well as one of the world’s greatest novels.

2. Madame BovaryGustave Flaubert

Madame Bovary was attacked for obscenity by public prosecutors when it was first serialised in La Revue de Paris between 1 October 1856 and 15 December 1856, resulting in a trial in January 1857 that made it notorious. The novel focuses on a doctor’s wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel’s true art lies in its details and hidden patterns.

Anna Karenina is widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered this book his first true novel. Although most Russian critics panned the novel on its publication as a “trifling romance of high life,” Fyodor Dostoevsky declared it to be “flawless as a work of art.” Tolstoy’s style in Anna Karenina is considered by many critics to be transitional, forming a bridge between the realist and modernist novel.

อันดับ 10 คือ "ลิง" ญาติห่างๆ ของมนุษย์ ซึ่งโดยทั่วไปแล้วลิงจะมีอายุเฉลี่ย 25 ปี

อันดับ 9 ได้แก่ "ช้าง" ซึ่งมีอายุเฉลี่ย 60 ปี โดยจะขึ้นอยู่กับการดูแล อาหารการกินและความเครียด ทั้งนี้ นักวิทยาศาสตร์ได้เปรียบเทียบอายุขัยระหว่างช้างเอเชียและช้างแอฟริกาแล้วพบ ว่า ช้างแอฟริกาที่ต้องผจญกับสัตว์ป่านานาชนิดและอาหารการกินที่ขัดสนกว่า ทำให้พวกมันเครียดและมีอายุขัยน้อยกว่าช้างเอเชีย อย่างไรก็ดี มีบันทึกว่าประเทศญี่ปุ่นเคยมีช้างที่มีอายุมากที่สุดในโลกคือ 86 ปี

อันดับ 8 คือ สัตว์ที่ไม่มีใครอยากให้มันมีชีวิตที่ยืนยาวนัก เพราะมันมักได้รับบทตัวร้ายในละครเสมอๆ นั่นคือ "อีกา" นั่นเอง ด้วยเหตุผลที่อีกาจะมีคู่เพียงตัวเดียวตลอดอายุขัย ทำให้มันไม่เหนื่อยล้าจนเกินไป นอกจากนี้ การสืบพันธุ์ยังเป็นตัวกำนันนาฬิกาชีวภาพให้หมุนเร็วขึ้นด้วย อีกาจึงมีอายุขัยสูงถึง 90 ปี ซึ่งพบอีกว่านกหลายๆ ชนิดก็มีอายุที่ยืนยาวไม่ต่างจากอีกามากนัก เช่น นกกระตั้ว

อันดับ 7 คือ "กุ้งก้ามกราม" ด้วยอายุขัย100 ปี ถือว่าอายุยืนที่สุดในสัตว์จำพวกมีเปลือกแข็งด้วยกัน ด้วยเหตุผลที่มันมีการเคลื่อนไหวและเผาผลาญพลังงานน้อย

อันดับ 6 คือ "หอยมุกน้ำจืด" ด้วยพฤติกรรมการใช้ชีวิตที่เผาผลาญพลังงานน้อย กินน้อย ใช้ก๊าซออกซิเจนในการหายใจน้อย ทำให้มันสามารถคว้าอันดับ 6 มาครองได้ ด้วยอายุขัยมากกว่า 110 ปี

อันดับ 5 คือ มนุษย์เรานี่เอง โดยมีอายุขัยสูงสุด 120 ปี ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับความเชื่อที่จารึกไว้ในคัมภีร์ศาสนาคริสต์และฮินดูที่ว่า มนุษย์จะมีอายุขัยได้ไม่เกิน 120 ปี อย่างไรก็ตามระยะหลังมานี้ มนุษย์มีแนวโน้มที่จะมีอายุทะลุ 100 ปีมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ เคล็ดลับการมีอายุยืนของผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่ทั้งหลายล้วนระบุตรงกันถึงการบริโภค อย่างพอดี การออกกำลังกายแต่พอดี ไม่ใช้ร่างกายอย่างหักโหมและมีทัศนคติที่ดี

อันดับ 2"เต่า" ถือเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตอายุยืนอันดับ 2 ที่มีอายุขัยประมาณ 250 ปี โดยเต่าที่มีอายุยืนที่สุดในโลกขณะนี้คือ "เต่ากาลาปากอส" ที่มีชื่อว่า "แฮเรียน" ตัวเดียวกันกับที่ "ชาร์ลส์ ดาร์วิน" นักวิทยาศาสตร์ชื่อก้อง จับมันมาใช้ชีวิตเมืองเมื่อหลายสิบปีก่อน โดยชาร์ลสเองก็ได้พิสูจน์ให้เห็นแล้วว่า สิ่งมีชีวิตชนิดนี้มีอายุยืนกว่าเขาเองเสียอีก โดยสาเหตุที่เชื่อว่าเต่ามีอายุยืนยาว สืบเนื่องจากการเคลื่อนไหวที่เนิบช้า และความไม่เดือดเนื้อร้อนใจใดๆ นั่นเอง
