Ponyo

Ponyo, the latest from anime king Hayao Miyazaki, is based on the Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. It tells the story of 5-year-old Sosuke (Frankie Jonas), who discovers a magical goldfish stuck in a jar in the heavily polluted Japanese harbor. The fish, who the boy names Ponyo, ran away from her father Fujimoto (Liam Neeson), a wizard whose daily job is to manage the balance of nature. Fujimoto is none-too-pleased with the treatment of the oceans by the “black-souled” humans and harbors deep-seeded prejudices against them. Regrettable for the undersea sorcerer,Ponyo, having licked Sosuke ’s wound and becoming best-est pals with him, wants to become a human. It’s understandable. Being a human is the best next to being a giraffe or emu. Maybe an impala.

As Fujimoto’s grave concerns over the ramifications of Ponyo’s wishes prove real, Ponyo’s sea goddess of a mother (Cate Blanchett) reveals that Ponyo’s wish can come true but it is ultimately up to Sosuke.

The voice cast also includes Tina Fey, Matt Damon, Betty White, Cloris Leachman and Lily Tomlin.

Ponyo quickly endears itself through its fanciful imagery and messages of friendship. It’s easy to see why the movie is already a huge hit in Japan and even easier to see why Disney picked up the distribution rights. Ponyo is rare because the story, while appealing to anyone with a heart, doesn’t have the adult-oriented jokey jokes that typical American animated flicks usually have. In fact, it’s downright kid-ish. Yet, despite its solidified stance, it’s anything but unintelligent. It’s magical and in a cinematic environment that takes childhood memories (and toys) and turns them into lobotomy surgeries, Ponyo is a triumph and a magnificent entry into Miyazaki’s revered-library.

The Informant (DVD) Movie Review

If you're about to dig into a mid-'90s "period piece" about a plain nebbish at a food additive company who decides to blow the whistle on his corporation's illegal price-fixing practices, well, you better get a few interesting people to bring this sort of story to the screen. With a leading man less reliable than Matt Damon and a director less colorfully unpredictable than Steven Soderbergh, a flick like this could play like a well-meaning but hopelessly yawn-worthy docu-drama. Happily, since The Informant! boasts both of those filmmakers (and a big handful of others), it turns out to be a seriously entertaining film ... about a seriously plain man.

Damon plays Mark Whitacre, a high-ranking suit for a chemical company called ADM. Essentially, these guys create all sorts of wonderful food additives, and the focal point this time around is a corn product called lysine. Only problem is that ADM and virtually all of its executives, not to mention their competitors, are knee-deep in a global "price-fixing" scheme, which (in case you didn't know) is all sorts of illegal. But while Mark seems more than willing to narc on his colleagues, simply because it's the right thing to do, it quickly becomes evident that our semi-hero is hiding more than a few skeletons inside his own closet.
Plus, as humorously realized by Damon's frequent inner monologue, Mark Whitacre is clearly a very naive man. And probably bipolar, too. Based on actual events and a book Kurt Eichenwald, and adapted with slyness and subtlety by screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, The Informant! is a tale of '90s-era corporate malfeasance that, quite successfully, aims to be a '70s-era boardroom thriller in the vein of Sidney Lumet or Alan J. Pakula. (Plus it features a fantastic Marvin Hamlisch score that is both playful and strangely old-fashioned.)

And while The Informant! will most certainly end up residing in the comedy section, don't mistake it for a fall-down laugh riot of any sort. The film has a dry and laconic demeanor, but it's (mercifully) lacking in "set up, punch line, repeat" machinations. Most of the humor comes from Matt Damon's quietly odd performance (his frequent inner monologues are quite randomly amusing), and much of the fun is derived by watching the corporate noose slooowly slither its way around Whitacre's neck.

Bonus points for a few unexpected twists in the tale, a great supporting performance by Scott Bakula as a noble fed, and just enough quirk to keep things from getting too dry. Fans of the reliably eclectic Steven Soderbergh will find The Informant! a "happy medium" between the filmmaker's "star-laden" Hollywood flicks and his smaller, yes slightly brainier, movies. And obviously that's a good thing.

When I saw the previews for this movie, I was sooo excited. I love Vince Vaughn. But then, just as Kelli and I were planning on going to see it, Rotten Tomatoes declared it totally rotten and we decided to wait for DVD. And, believe it or not, I actually managed to wait.

Basically, this is about a couple (Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell) who are going through some marital problems and contemplating divorce. They are on a wait list for this top-notch therapy program at a tropical resort. When there is finally an opening, they can't afford the program without the group rate. Promising their friends that the therapy part is optional, they get 3 other couples to join them on the trip.

Of course, upon arriving, they find out that the therapy is not optional and if someone doesn't participate, the whole group will be sent home. They also find that the resort has a "singles side" that is the wild, crazy party most of the group had hoped for on their vacation. Of course, they are also not allowed to go to that side of the island. So, in order to help their struggling friends, they agree to participate in the therapy. Sure enough, the therapy starts to reveal cracks in the other relationships. Chaos ensues...

Overall, I liked the movie. I didn't love it. Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau are usually my go-to guys for obnoxious humor. There was some obnoxious humor but not up to par for either of them. Don't get me wrong, the funny parts were really funny... there just weren't enough of them. Maybe this movie could have worked better as a follow up to Wedding Crashers... like Vince and Owen Wilson and the two sisters they married go to island therapy. That could have been hilarious. This was just okay. It had some good one-liners. (I've been looking for something to say to David when his explanation of things go around and around without ever getting to the point. I will now instruct him to "land the plane".) All in all, worth watching, but I am glad I waited for DVD. If nothing else, the scenery is pretty. I'm sooo ready for warmer weather. Anyway, average movie. I give it a C.

In Spike Jonze’s big screen adaptation of the much beloved classic children’s picture book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, he takes many liberties to expand the few sentences of the book into a full length film. Instead of only “making mischief of one kind and another,” Max (Max Records) has serious reason to act out. His mother (Catherine Keener) has begun seeing a new boyfriend (Mark Ruffalo), and it is obvious by his actions that Max needs a father figure. Max’s older sister is too busy hanging out with her friends to play with him in the snow so he plays by himself. In a particularly heartbreaking scene, one of his sister’s friends crushes his carefully made snow fort by jumping on top of it, with Max inside. Max acts out one night by wearing his wolf suit and screaming insults at his mother.

Hurt and confused, he runs out of the house “and an ocean tumbles by with a private boat for Max, and he sailed off through night and day and in and out of weeks and almost over a year to where the wild things are.” In the book, the wild things are pretty frightening looking. They tower over Max and have various horns, hoofs, and claws. In the movie, they are just the same. They threaten to eat Max up, until Max proves that he can be scary and becomes the king of all wild things. The Wild Things of the movie mirror the characters of Max’s real life. Carol (James Gandolfini) is Max, wild and unruly and unsure of himself. KW (Lauren Ambrose) is Max’s sister, who is trying to find herself in other ways and finds her friends more interesting than her family. Judith (Catherine O’Hara) is a pessimistic leader who is also unsure of what she needs to do. Alexander (Paul Dano) represents another side of Max, the lonely, scared side.

Carol and Max have the best chemistry, and some of the best scenes occur when the two are discovering and talking. KW though has some very tender scenes with Max, and it is obvious in talking with her that Max looks up to his big sister greatly. But as tender as Jonze treats childhood, the film is not completely perfect. As a film experience, it can seem a bit unresolved. There is really no climax, no typical storyline. Max simply goes to the wild things, experiences things, builds things, then goes home. He doesn’t even really go on a journey that ends with him figuring things out. Like any kid, he just knows that he misses his family and wants to go home. Jonze has succeeded in every way with his adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are. He kept it simple, honest, and has captured a part of childhood that most grown-ups don’t remember, or don’t want to remember.
