The debate about the existence or non-existence of extraterrestrial intelligence can be an exhausting one. Regardless of whether or not it can be proven, there are any number of strange stories that make the existence of E.T. visitations seem plausible. Some of them are so well-recorded and inexplicable that they might just have been genuine close encounters.

McMinnville Incident

In Oregon, in May of 1950, a farmer named Mr. Trent saw a UFO at his farm outside McMinnville. According to Mr. Trent, his wife Evelyn first spotted the object, a silvery, metallic disk. She was outside feeding her rabbits when it appeared in the early evening sky. She called out to her husband, who came outside and watched for a couple of minutes. He then went and got a camera, and took two pictures before the object sped off to the west.

The most striking thing lending credence to the story is the Trents’ behavior. They never made any money off the photographs, and actually had to be convinced to let them be published by a local reporter—apparently, they were afraid of getting into trouble with the government.

There are disagreements as to the veracity of the photos. The Condon Report, a 1967 study into UFO phenomena conducted by the University of Colorado, concluded that relative photographic densities of objects in the photos suggested that the subject was distant, meaning they were somewhat likely to be genuine. A much more recent examination concluded that the object’s geometry was consistent with a small model hanging from a wire. But that wire has never been spotted in either photo, and Evelyn and Paul Trent earnestly insisted, until their deaths in 1997 and 1998, respectively, that the photos were of an actual UFO.

Mariana Incident

In 1950, on the night of August 15, minor league baseball manager Nick Mariana became the first person to capture film footage of a UFO. It happened as he was inspecting the diamond before a game in Great Falls, Montana, which has since become a hotbed of UFO sightings, and is close to a US Air Force Base.

Mariana was able to capture two bright dots streaking across the sky on his 16mm movie camera, which he says he routinely kept in his car. After sending the film to be developed, he began to contact local newspapers—significant, as he had not yet seen the developed film and so would not have known if any fakery looked convincing. In October, he wrote a letter to the Air Force and was interviewed at Malstrom Air Force Base.

After examining the film, the Air Force concluded “possible aircraft” and dropped it. While two fighters were on record as having landed at Malstrom at around the time of the sighting, Mariana insisted that he saw those, too—in a different part of the sky. He also claimed that upon his film’s return, several frames that showed the spinning discs more clearly were missing—presumably cut by the Air Force. While the debate has never been resolved, the incident kicked off decades of over 100 sightings in Great Falls, and prompted the renaming of the minor league baseball team to the Voyagers.

Chicago O’Hare Incident

When several people state flatly that they observed a saucer-shaped aircraft hovering around before bolting into the sky at incredible speeds, it is tempting to assume that they don’t know much about aircraft. But when just such an incident occurred in Chicago in 2006, it was pretty difficult to make that case—it took place at O’Hare International Airport, and most of the people who saw it were United Airlines employees.

No airline officials, air traffic controllers, or radar records indicated anything out of the ordinary, though a United supervisor did call the tower to ask if any saucers were hovering nearby. The FAA has declined to investigate, which has proved irritating to those who insist that they witnessed the incident. Officials have tossed out the usual balloons, optical illusions, and weather phenomena as possible explanations.

As for the witnesses, they counter that none of those could explain the hole that the craft punched in the clouds while making its quick ascent, which lingered for several minutes. All witnesses agreed that the craft was dark gray, didn’t have any lights or markings, and maintained its position steadily before blasting off.

Edwards Air Force Base Sighting

One can’t blame the US Air Force for being sensitive about matters involving UFOs—in 1957, one supposedly landed at Edwards Air Force Base. If that sounds like an insane myth, keep in mind that it was allegedly caught on film and was reported by Gordon Cooper, a test pilot and astronaut in the United States’ first manned space program. He was at Edwards supervising the installation of a new precision-landing system at the time, and his account of the incident was pretty unambiguous.

“I had a camera crew filming the installation when they spotted a saucer. They filmed it as it flew overhead, then hovered, extended three legs as landing gear, and slowly came down to land on a dry lake bed. These guys were all pro cameramen, so the picture quality was very good. The camera crew managed to get within 20 or 30 yards of it, filming all the time. It was a classic saucer, shiny silver and smooth, about 30 feet across. It was pretty clear it was an alien craft. As they approached closer, it took off.”

The camera crew reported this incident to Cooper and turned over the film. Cooper says that he reported the incident to his superiors, and was told to develop the film and send it to Washington, which he did after watching it and finding it to be exactly as described. He says that, after that, the film vanished and didn’t come to light even when the Air Force began Project Blue Book. He suggested using it as evidence and was told it had been lost—not that it would have mattered much. According to Cooper, “Blue Book was strictly a cover-up anyway.”

Socorro Encounter

On April 24, 1964, several witnesses in different parts of Socorro, New Mexico, reported different sightings of the same event. Some saw a low-flying object in the sky, some heard loud sounds reminiscent of the takeoff and landing of a powerful craft. But one man swears he actually saw it land and that it could only have been an alien spacecraft. His name was Lonnie Zamora, and it was such an astonishing encounter that it distracted him from the high-speed chase he had been engaged in when he first caught sight of the craft—at the the time of the sighting, Mr. Zamora was an on-duty Socorro police officer.

What grabbed Officer Zamora’s attention was a gigantic cone of blue light rising thousands of feet into the air, which he took to be flames. Abandoning his pursuit, he went in the direction of what was presumably a crash or a miners’ shack explosion—and that was when his day got really intense. He spotted a vehicle in a gully, then two small humanoids glimpsed from the corner of his eye seemed to “jump” at his approach before disappearing. He parked the vehicle and got out, then heard a series of metallic clangs coming from the gully. The source was a huge, metallic oval object standing on girder-like legs. Immediately, a bluish flame shot out of the bottom of the vehicle, and it rose before taking off quickly and silently, vanishing into the distance as the officer got on his radio to report what he had just seen.

A fellow officer responding to his call also saw evidence of the incident—angular indentations where the “landing gear” had made contact and burned foliage from its takeoff—and several witnesses in the area reported either an egg-shaped craft or a blue flame in the sky, some immediately afterward and independently of Zamora’s report. Several who have interviewed the officer about the incident, including journalists and Air Force officials, have similar conclusions to draw, such as former Project Blue Book head Hector Quintanilla Jr. “There is no doubt that Lonnie Zamora saw an object which left quite an impression on him. There is also no question about Zamora’s reliability. He is a serious police officer and a man well-versed in recognizing airborne vehicles in his area. He is puzzled by what he saw, and frankly, so are we.”

5The Westall UFO

On April 6, 1966, in Melbourne, Australia, witnesses say a silver, disc-shaped craft was spotted whizzing around, and that it then landed in a paddock near a high school and took off again. It would be a somewhat typical report of the type that is normally just a prank or misidentification of something else—except that this incident was observed by over 200 people in broad daylight, and no explanation has ever been offered.

Though eyewitness accounts vary, that is not unusual even in non-paranormal events when so many people are involved. What witnesses agreed on was that a large group of students were finishing their physical education class when several of them pointed out a silver or silvery-green craft about twice the size of a car, buzzing and hovering around a group of pine trees behind the school. After some time it landed among the pines. By that time, more students had come outside to see what was going on and some witnesses claim that private aircraft were approaching to investigate. In full view of this crowd, the craft rose from the trees, tilted at a 45-degree angle, flew into the sky at a rate of speed the private planes were unable to match, and vanished.

The nearest airport reported no private planes taking off in the area at that time, and neither did the military confirm any activity. Those who propose conventional explanations for this event are confounded by the fact that the object was in full view of hundreds of people for over 20 minutes, and was clearly not a plane or weather balloon—yet, no photographic or film evidence exists, and no pilot has ever claimed to have participated in the “chase.” The Westall incident remains one of Australia’s most debated unsolved UFO cases.

The Portage County Chase

According to Project Blue Book and the aforementioned Quintanilla, half a dozen or so police officers chased a communications satellite—and then, after losing sight of that, the planet Venus—into the Ohio wilderness and across the state line into Pennsylvania in the pre-dawn hours of April 17, 1966. When this official report was released, the police officers involved had a less-than-receptive response—in fact, they were infuriated by the insinuation that they could be that stupid. Especially considering this statement, signed by Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur, one of the first to observe the object.

“We found an abandoned car on the berm on Rt. 224 between Atwater and Randolph. We left our car to routinely investigate this vehicle. Spaur noticed a light over the trees on the hill next to the berm, and called Neff’s attention to it. As we watched, the light came closer and a large, self-illuminated object was seen as its source. The object came directly overhead and hovered above us. Its light lit up the ground where we were standing, and our cruiser, P-13. It was too bright to look at without hurting the eyes.”

After they understandably retreated to their patrol car and called it in, at least five more officers assisted them in pursuing the object for over half an hour before finally losing sight of it. But it gets stranger still—shortly before Spaur and his partner’s encounter, Police Chief Gerald Buchert saw a saucer-like, illuminated object hovering near his yard at home and snapped a picture of it. While he kept the original photo, he was persuaded to send the negative to Quintanilla, who dismissed the image as a processing defect. The negative, of course, was never seen again.

Trans-En-Provence Incident

The French version of NASA documents UFO sightings a little more diligently than its American counterpart. The incident that took place at Trans-en-Provence in January 1981 has been called the most carefully documented sighting of all time. While the incident doesn’t seem spectacular at first glance, its simplicity leaves little room for interpretation.

Retired farmer Renato Nicolai was working in his garden when he heard a sudden whistling sound, accompanied by the appearance of something that he immediately took to be an experimental aircraft. In broad daylight, he watched as a saucer-shaped craft between five and six feet in diameter dropped out of the sky, stopping to hover for half a minute about two meters (six feet) off the ground. Then it rose into the sky, a plume of dust in its wake. Nicolai was about 30 meters (100 ft) away.

The French government’s study found evidence of compacting and heating of the soil near the landing site, depleted chlorophyll in plants around the site, and “black material” that was not oil or residue from combustion, but metallic in nature. A technical report stated, “It was not the aim of the author to identify the exact nature of the phenomenon observed on January 8, 1981 at Trans-en-Provence. But it can reasonably be concluded that something unusual did occur that might be consistent, for instance, with an electromagnetic source of stress.”

Warren Air Force Base

Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, has been the site of a number of alleged UFO visitations since 1965, when red and green flashing lights reported by civilians in the area had local missile sites like Warren on high alert. That’s right—Warren’s UFO problem is part of a troubling larger trend of instances where nuclear missile armories are visited by unexplained objects, and it’s happened several times there.

In a famous 1976 incident reported by retired Minuteman missile launch officer Bruce Fenstermacher, a bright white object with flashing red and blue lights was seen to the North. Guards stationed at the base observed the object, a cigar-shaped craft a little under 20 meters (65 ft) long, moving near the missile silos. Military and police personnel frantically converged on the site, by which time the craft had disappeared. The craft kept switching positions, with the police experiencing car trouble every time they started to get close. Finally, more than two hours after the incident began, the craft departed at blinding speed, becoming a bright white speck on the horizon.

Though several witnesses agreed on this account, it was not included in any official report. None of the other other alleged sightings at the base have been either. As recently as 2010, a power failure to 50 intercontinental nuclear warheads at the base meant that over 10 percent of the US nuclear arsenal was offline for nearly an hour, prompting renewed speculation from UFO enthusiasts.

Piney Woods Incident

One December night in 1980, friends Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum, along with Vickie’s grandson, Colby, were driving along a lonely highway through the Piney Woods of Texas when they saw something none of them would ever forget. It was an encounter that left its mark on them all—mentally, emotionally, and physically.

The three came up on a water tower–sized, glowing, diamond-shaped object in the middle of the highway, blocking their way. Flames periodically shot from its underside, making it rise slightly before settling back down. It radiated intense light and heat. The two women, who exited the vehicle to examine the object—the seven-year-old boy wanted nothing to do with it—would later say that they had to use their coats to avoid being burned on the door handles when they re-entered their vehicle, and the plastic dashboard was soft enough to leave a handprint in. As they watched the UFO ascend, one to two dozen military-style helicopters buzzed overhead, surrounding it—a Dayton police officer also confirmed seeing helicopters of this type near the same area at the time. The women drove on, watching the craft and helicopters recede into the distance.

All three suffered bizarre symptoms reminiscent of radiation poisoning or chemical contamination for some time afterward—weakness, nausea, and the feeling of having been sunburned. Betty Cash’s symptoms were bad enough for her to be hospitalized, and as such the Cash-Landrum encounter is one of very few UFO incidents to result in litigation. Citing the presence of the helicopters, the family sued the US government for $20 million—and lost. The military denied deploying any helicopters to that area, or possessing a gigantic, diamond-shaped UFO, and the judge ruled in their favor.

5. PAKISTAN CRICKET SPOT FIXING SCANDAL

Pakistan Cricket spot fixing scandal is the famous cricket scandal which took place in 2010. It accused certain team members of Pakistan’s national cricket team of taking bribes from a bookmaker named Mazhar Majeed to under-perform deliberately and thus influence specific events in a match which are opposed to an actual match result. This scandal occurred in a test match held at Lord’s Cricket Ground, London. This information was used by gamblers to place bets as they had inside information. Majeed was arrested by Scotland Yard for match fixing. As a result International Cricket Council (ICC) banned three players namely Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir for terms of between 5 and 10 years. It is alleged that Tabu and her co-stars of the movie – Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan – went for a happy hunt near the protected village of Jodhpur. So, charges were filed against the celebrity hunting gang under wildlife preservation act. Though Salman Khan and others escaped verdict by not appearing before the Jury, Tabu was forced to. But adding to that, Saif Ali Khan has also been found guilty for assaulting a NRi business man at the Taj in Mumbai.

People who are known as criminals are called so because of their bad deeds and the bad things that they have committed. But we can’t stoop to the same level in order to teach them a lesson. Then what will be the difference left between us and them. There can be many different ways in order to make them realize their mistakes and the effects of their wrong doings on their’s and the victim’s families. Providing them with death sentence will never make them understand the effects of their ill doings as they will not be here to see the consequences. Thus, capital punishment is not the solution for a crime, no matter how big it is, as we can’t lower ourselves to the level of criminals.

This money which is wasted, to keep a criminal under special supervision, can be utilized to help the victims families. So, it is better to provide life imprisonment rather than death penalty to the criminals, in order to help the families of the victims.

The actual process when that person is killed is known as execution while the name of the punishment is death sentence. There are crimes. And then there are crimes against women. This latter category is the worst outcome of living in such a heavily patriarchal world. Women all over are paying the price for being the “fairer sex”, the “weaker sex” and many more liberally applied adjectives that have little to do with science and more with sound ignorance of the mind. Though women have been oppressed over centuries, the past few decades have seen crimes against women to be particularly on the rise and become obscenely brutal. There was a time when rape was the worst fate imaginable for a woman. Today given the way criminals have advanced their play, the mere act of rape no longer ignites outrage out of an audience that initially faced despair and now are simply apathetic. Now what makes headlines are gang rapes, being stoned to death, honour killings, acid attacks, etc. The truth is far worse than your imagination.

Ironically the myth was that women in western first world countries are at par with men, have equal rights and are infinitely more better off than their third world country counter parts. On paper, some these are even true. The millions of women world over who survive daily without any semblance of the most basic human rights dream about freedom, about escaping to a country where they can live like humans. Then the Steubenville rape case occurred and reminded us that even women in America share the problems of their third world sisters. In general they may be treated with some semblance of equality, but when a tragedy like this occurs it strips of the facade of civilization that we wear with such impunity. While the victim’s naked body was parodied and riled on social media, the media had nothing but sympathy for the two rapists. It felt remorse at how their promising future and potential will now be wasted because of this “stupid incident”.

This incident is a horrific reminder that we girls are on our own at the end of the day. Our safety is our responsibility. You cannot depend on your constitutional rights, your democratic citizenship or a free and fair media that had promised to deliver justice. Being cautious is not a choice anymore. It is a necessity born out of the cruel times you live in. Be careful where you live, where you work. But most importantly, be careful when you travel. 10. Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi was not always as dangerous as it is today. Despite the danger warnings, it still remains a popular tourist spot. In fact Prince William had proposed to his then girlfriend Kate Middleton in a secluded mountain spot in Kenya. The country has long been a favourite holiday destination of the royals and Nairobi with its hotspots and cosmopolitan culture is not far behind. But the country is not what it used to be anymore. The sinking economy has increased the numbers of criminals on the street. Night time mugging, robbing and rape incidents are tremendously high. Al Shabab militants have promised to launch attacks during the holy month of Ramzan. The city is on the verge of terrorist activities. A woman’s safety cannot be gambled on the terse situation of the country right now.

A litany of political figures have been assassinated and though the area is stable for now, the tension brewing below the surface is explosive. The local Yemeni man carries a Jambiya or a huge dagger in preparation of the violence he is likely to meet or create. Tourists returning from Yemen have frightful tales to tell.

The gangster wars of Ciudad Juarez may have inspired a whole slew of Hollywood action flicks along the lines of Desperado and Once Upon A Time in Mexico, but the reality of having to live there is far from a movie. Innocent citizens are ceaselessly caught up in the crossfire between the warring drug cartels Sinaloa and Juarez. Police and government authorities have very little say in the matter. In 2010, three thousand people were killed in the city whose population is no more than 1.3 million. In 2011, armed gunmen entered a bar and murdered seven women. Incidents like this are more the norm than the exception. Though Ciudad Juarez is only a few miles away from the US border, its intense drug culture and open lawlessness should be a clear warning to any woman, or man for that matter, attempting to get a taste of Latin America.

Haryana is a state, not a city. But barring it from this list on a condition of technicality would be an error. Few places have crimes committed against women as chronically as Haryana. Despite raising alarm bells all over the country, little measures have been taken to curb their constant abuse of justice. It is not the capital city of Chandigarh that women need to stay wary of. Rather, Chandigarh is quite an advanced metropolitan. It is the beautiful but treacherous rural backyard of the state that should have warning signboard placed all over, lest women think of entering. The following incident happened not in Haryana but a little known village in Madhya Pradesh. A Swiss woman was bicycling when she was attacked by local youths who robbed and raped her. My reason for mentioning this incident here, as well as for including a state instead of a city, is because north Indian rural areas are deadly traps for single female tourists. Haryana is a typical example. For the past many decades, infanticide and female foeticide have been so common here that the male female sex ratio is 834 females per 1000 males. This has caused such a terrible shortage of women in the area. Men are forced to remain unmarried. Women are trafficked from other parts of the country and the world to meet these impossible demands. Single females travelling on their own are doomed. Several stories have been reported where young brides are passed between different men of the same family in lieu of lack of other eligible women. Haryana also has the dubious honour of the highest rate of honour killings.

Being featured at number six on this list is actually quite a promotion for Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Up until very recently, it was unanimously voted the most dangerous city in the world and occupied that position for a long time. The area was known for its inherent crimes against women as long as Al Qaeda backed militants ruled the roost here. The last fully functioning government had collapsed in the early nineties, following a coup of sorts. The UN and other embassies pulled out soon after. After two decades of continual lawlessness the Somalian people, and especially the women, had had enough. In 2007, African Union Fighters pushed out the militants and started the tenuous task of rebuilding. Since then the city has become much safer than what it was, but still not safe enough to be a woman in.

Pakistan is infinitely better off in its treatment if women when compared with other fundamentalist Islamic countries. However, much remains to be desired. A western female tourist might be relatively safe travelling in Karachi, Islamabad or Lahore. But venture into rural regions or the Swat valley at your own risk because all bets are off here. Peshawar is a frontier city of Pakistan and the place is so rife with violence that it is unsafe for people of all gender, caste, creed and colour. Foreigners are special targets though. Petty tribes fight among each other and with local warlords to establish superiority. Heads of authority change frequently and government laws and rules have little say in matters of local administration. Suicide bombings are a daily event here. An American woman travelling here would be a sitting duck.

If I could put every city of Afghanistan on this list, it would still not completely convey how dangerous a country this is for women. Kabul is by no means the only or the worst city for women in Afghanistan. Since it is the capital of the country, it is named the best example to cite. As far as safety of women are concerned, Kabul is perfectly interchangeable with Kandahar or any other Afghani city. In 2008 American teacher Cyd Mizell was kidnapped. No ransom demands followed this and she has not been found to date. She is believed to have been killed. In 2009, a law was passed in the country that made rape within marriage legal. Aisha Bibi is an Afghan girl who had been married at thirteen into a Taliban family so her father could pay off personal debts. After years of bearing intense physical and mental torture, she tried to run away from home. She was found, captured and tried in a court of law which deemed her guilty. As a punishment they cut off her nose and ears and left her to die in the hills. Beheadings are rampant in the country. Christians are openly prosecuted and murdered. Women found guilty of the slightest conceived misdemeanours are lashed publicly or simply stoned to death. They are required to wear heavily intrusive Burqas at all times and not allowed to travel without the permission of their male overlords. As the US troops prepare to vacate the country by 2014 and the Taliban keep gaining stronghold day by day, one can surmise that the situation is only going to get worse. Like Afghanistan, Riyadh being the capital of Saudi Arabia is a mere example of what hell the country can be for women. Sharia laws are prevalent and enforced throughout the country. The Mutaween Committee of the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice troll around malls, coffee shops, fair stalls and other public spaces to detect and punish anyone (mostly women) whom they deem to be dressed or behaving indecently. Girls and boys socializing together are severely officially penalized. A young girl dressed in the proper Islamic attire was walking in a mall and listening to music in her iPod. She was arrested, especially when the religious police noticed that she was wearing nail polish as well. In 2009 a court upheld an eight year old girl’s marriage to a fifty eight year old man, declaring that the police would keep an eye on the man so that he cannot have sex with her before she reaches puberty. In the same year a seventy five year old woman was sentenced to forty public whip lashes because she was seen in the company of two men who were not relatives. The fact that one of the men was her baker and delivering her bread did not count. A father had been raping his five year old daughter for years and one day she succumbed to her injuries. The imposed a measly fine and let him off with no prison sentence. Laws of the country also prevent women from doing basic activities like driving or going about unaccompanied. This exotic holiday destination is a death trap for women. The divide that exists between the rich and poor classes of society here are so extreme that the crime figures are really no surprise. One part of the city is home to the most luxurious homes and hotels, the swankiest clubs and restaurants of the world. The other part of the city is rife with slum dwellings where people can barely afford a meal a day. The poor are treated obnoxiously, denied any privilege of healthcare, decent wages or fair treatment. Instead they are relegated to their crowded huts from where they watch the glittering lights of the fancy people swallow their livelihood. Out of this rage and anger is born a resentment to hurt and take by force what is denied to them by right. The pattern has been so embedded that horrific crimes are routine here. Unfortunately, the most hapless victims are the women. Though hushed statistic speak of a terrible state of the local women, these are rarely revealed to the international media. That is why Anni Dewani thought nothing of the fact when she decided to take a ride through the slums of Cape Town in a bid to see the real Africa when she went there on her honeymoon in November 2010. Her subsequent brutal murder and the ensuing heightened media coverage around it shed light on exactly how unsafe Cape Town is for women. This idea was reinforced in February 2013 when a seventeen year old girl Anen Booysan gang raped so violently that it caused her death. Her throat had been slit, her body mutilated and disemboweled her hands and legs broken and her fingers smashed. Her funeral was attended by hundreds of citizens who chanted “Enough is enough” as a means of protest.

New Delhi is the capital of India. Of late though it has earned a new epithet. Given the huge rise of rapes and other crimes against women that the city has been steadfastly witnessing, it is now termed as the Rape capital of the country. It is going to be very rare to find a young working girl in Delhi who has not faced some degree of harassment, be it eve teasing, stalking, molestation or the most dreaded rape. This title is further carried forward when the few daring victims who do step forward to register a complaint or an F.I.R. face the torture of police questioning. They are treated as the criminals themselves. After quizzing them intensely on what they were wearing while the crime occurred, why they were out so ate at night in the first place, were they with other boys, intimate questions about the nature of the attack, etc., then either they penalize them even more or simply refuse to register the complaint. In Rajasthan, the neighbouring state of Delhi, a ten year old girl had been raped by a 35 year old man of a higher caste. When the little girl’s mother took her to the police station to report the crime, the police advised them to drop it. When they refused, the police arrested them instead. Justice they call it.

Of course the reason Delhi really lands this coveted position is because of the gang rape of 23 year old student Nirbhaya. This incident jolted the nation into action. A flurry of protests occurred, policies were enacted and the girl’s fate was universally lamented on all news channels. Did it really make any difference? , It did not deter the number of rapes in the city. A British national was attacked in her hotel room by the owner. She jumped from her balcony in a bid to save herself and injured herself severely.

A few months later a five year old girl was raped by her neighbour who shoved candles and plastic glass bottles up her body. Last week a six year old girl’s sexually assaulted body, with her throat slit, was found near a men’s toilet. But you haven’t heard everything yet. In 2004 a couple of men came across a cow munching grass in a field. They tied her legs to a tractor and sexually assaulted her repeatedly. Then they mutilated her hide with a butcher’s knife, carving into it over and over again till the gentle animal was able to feel pain no longer.

Where there is kindness there is cruelty. Some believe that these two opposing forces must necessarily co-exist to balance each other in the world. However, there are certain acts so vicious, so brutal and so insensitive that they are truly unforgivable. This article does not intend to promote or propagate any kind of heinous crimes or criminal acts. Even if the truth does come out later, the victim’s reputation remains tainted for a prolonged period of time, if not forever.

A woman of Australian origin, Katherine had an abusive childhood. She was aware of her abusive father raping her mother upto 10 times a day. A member of the Julio- Claudian dynasty, Gaius- commonly known as Caligula- was a Roman emperor from 37 AD to 41 AD. His hunger for sexual adventures was huge, and a brain fever had left him feeling that he was God. For him, murder was a fun activity. More than 150,000 animals were butchered for his amusement, early in his rule. He also ordered the murder of countless people, and made it compulsory for the victim’s family members to be audience to the murder. Caligula was a psychotic, and liked chewing the testicles of his victims. He had sexual relations with numerous women, including his own sisters. He forced men to send their wives to him for sexual pleasure. Under his rule, many people died of starvation.

7. Tracey Wigginton

Also known as the “Lesbian Vampire Killer”, Wigginton is a self-claimed “human vampire”. Another blood-crazy lady, 650 young women were reportedly killed during her reign, as Bathory had them beaten, pierced, killed and drained their blood, in which she would take a bath as she felt it made her skin softer and made her younger. Some of her most horrid acts include burning the faces of her servants with hot irons when they failed to work up to her expectation, freezing young women to death by stripping them naked on cold winter mornings and having ice-cold water poured on them, and piercing her victims with needles. Bathory used to bite the flesh of her victims, biting their faces, hands, and even private parts. Some of her victims were even forced to eat their own flesh. It is not a confirmed fact, but Bathory may have also eaten up some of her servants.

5. Ivan

Czar of Russia from 1533 to 1584, Ivan has been called one of the most evil men in history. Known to be aggressive right from childhood, he liked beating up, torturing and killing both animals and people alike. He ordered the murder of many children and forced their parents to watch the murder. He was brutal in his style and often had his victims strangled, beheaded, blinded, stabbed, hanged, buried alive, and even boiled and fried. There exist records stating that he pulled out people’s ribs using red hot pinchers. Once, in a fit of rage, he murdered his own son.

4. Saloth Sar

More commonly known as Pol Pot. Prime Minister of Cambodia from 1976 to 1979, he is the only man in history known to have ordered a genocide against the entire country, killing about 3 million Cambodians in his rule of four years. He and his group, Khmer Rouge, took it upon him to bring ‘civilization’ to Cambodia. They shut down almost all the schools and ordered an evacuation. During his tenure, Pol has been credited with ordering the people, no matter what age, gender, class, and even pregnant women, to work in fields during the rainy the rainy season, standing in neck-deep water. As a result, their hands and feet would swell-up and bleed. People had no right to eat, and of found eating, they were flogged and even beaten to death. Pol had numerous babies killed, many of them literally “torn limb-by-limb”. Prisoners were forced to drink human urine. To top it all, Pol liked keeping the skulls of his victims, and their lives were of no value at all to him.

3. Vlad Dracula

Also known as “Dracula the Impaler”, he was the prince of Wallacha. His favorite method of torturing his victims was through impalement. He would have his victims tied up, and then impale (or insert) a blunt rod through an orifice (opening) in the body. The orifice was sometimes the stomach or abdomen, and many times, the buttocks. Vlad would order that a long rod be impaled into the buttocks of the victims, and kept being pushed in till it emerged out of the victim’s mouth. This completely damaged all internal organs and many of the people- be it men, women, or even babies- would suffer for hours or even days, and finally, bleed to death. One condition laid out by Vlad was that the rods be blunt, because if they were sharp, they would penetrate more, and the victim would die sooner and suffer lesser. He also had his wife killed and her vital organs cut off.

We all have different type of parents, some are good some are bad. Some are extra caring, some are extra strict. But one thing is common we never like our parents we generally feel that our friend’s parents are nice and our parents think that neighborhoods child is nice than us. Parents and children both are right on their own place. But still we find many cases where it’s unbearable for any child to handle the abusiveness of their parents. I don’t say that every parent is abusive if they shout or beat their child. Because we know parents are the one who take care of us, who love us and they are also the one’s who make us aware from bad things and sometimes bring us on the right path in life. But if the abusiveness of any parent is uncontrollable and most importantly ‘unreasonable’, then you need to focus on reasons, solutions and most importantly find out ways to handle this very delicate situation. Let me tell you as a child if your parent is really abusive on that serious stage then you have to learn the ways if still it doesn’t work then take the appropriate action. Hence, to help you out from this situation, I am going to list out ten different ways to handle an abusive parent as a child.

10. Don’t Pay Attention

Yes, seriously! I mean you if you start bothering about so small abuses by your parents you will go on taking more and more stress. So the best way is, Why the hell do you pay attention to them? Keep calm by counting in your mind, ten to one that is descending it would definitely help you to cool down. Don’t argue with them, go to your room instead to be quite mentally. 8. Discussion

Firstly, in every bad situation you should always give this method that is discussion a try. Discussion helps you to lead to solution or sometimes find reason behind the problem. 6. Take Elders Help

Take help of your family relatives and the elder one’s because when they will talk to your parents, your parents will take your matter seriously and will be in control. 10. Kanaklata Barua

Year: 1924-1942

Kanaklata Barua was an Indian Freedom Fighter from Assam. She joined Quit India Movement. According to the programme during the movement, National Flag had to be hoisted at the court and police station, as they were the main spots of the Britishers. Kanaklata Barua joined the programme, holding a national flag in her hands in the front line. She tried to convince the policemen by saying that they came to just hoist the national flag for the cause of the nation. But the police force prevented her by pointing gun towards her and the other volunteers involved in this noble duty. As she marched ahead, she was fired by the police force. She laid down her life for the freedom of the country. She was only 17 years of age at the time of her martyrdom.

9. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

Year: 1900-1990

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit , was a sister of Jawaharlal Nehru. She was the first woman in India to hold a minister position. She was inspired by Rani Lakshmi Bai and Sarojini Naidu’s work changed her thoughts and she decided to join the freedom movement. She took part in Non-Cooperation movement and Civil Disobedience Movement. She was the first woman to become president of the United Nations General Assembly. She pledged to win back her country from the British through any means. She was a dynamic personality who served the country. She was an all-rounder. She attended numerous public lectures and represented India in many of the conferences abroad. Her work is etched in the minds of Indians.

8. Indira Gandhi

Year: 1917-1984

Indira Gandhi, daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru and grand-daughter of Motilal Nehru. Indira Gandhi was influenced by her father and decided to work for India and its people. She was marked by firm resolution and determination. She was appointed as a First Women Prime Minister of the country in the year 1966. During her tenure as a Prime Minister, Indian society had undergone profound changes. She nationalized banks and also green revolution occurred during this time. 7. Padmaja Naidu

Year: 1900-1975

She was one of the few women who were elected to the Constituent Assembly. She was a firm administrator who bought credit to the Indian womanhood through her courage and personality. She was the first woman to be elected as the Chief Minister. Even after the independence, she served India diligently and dedicated her life for the improvement of the lives of the Indians.

5. Sarojini Naidu

Year: 1879-1949

Sarojini Naidu, “The Nightingale of India” devoted herself to get freedom for women, united Hindu and Muslims and improved the status and lives of Indians . She regained the self-esteem within women in India and rejuvenated the spirit of courage in the hearts of Indians. She was the admirer of Gandhiji and followed him and his principles with true heart. She went along with him to England where she criticized the British rule in India and disparaged their views and system. She even stayed in jail for 21 days during ‘Quit India’ protest with Gandhiji. 4. Kasturba Gandhi

Year: 1869-1944

Kasturba Gandhi was the wife of Mohandas KaramChand Gandhi and was fondly called as ‘Ba’. She joined her husband Mahatma Gandhi in political protest and stood by him during all the facets of life. Begum Hazrat Mahal was known as the Begum of Oudh. She rebelled against the British East India Company during the India’s First War of Independence with the zest to win. After her husband Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was sent away in exile to Calcutta, she took the charge of the affairs of the state of Awadh (Oudh) and worked incessantly to revive the fortune of the state. She fought against the British with perspicacity and fortitude. Indian government issued a stamp in her honour on 10th may 1984.

2. Rani Lakshmi Bai

Year: 1835- 1858

Rani Lakshmi Bai was the queen of Jhansi and was one of the most important women of the revolt of 1857. The brazen bull was an enormous metal replica of a bull which was hollow. The victim’s tongue was cut out and then he was shut inside this bull. People then lit a fire under this bull and the wait for the heat to reach its peak intensity and kill the victim. This disturbingly but cleverly thought out device makes us question the mental sanity of some people in those ages. The victim would be stripped and made to hang upside down. This is done so that the brain is oxygenated and the victim does not pass out due to the surrounding circumstances and thus experiences pain in its entirety .A saw would then slice the body vertically starting from the crotch. The saw would slide down till the navel area or beyond till the victim was no more.

4)Judas cradle / chair

This device consisted of a pyramid with a sharp point where the victim was hoisted above this sharp point and the control of this would be with an interrogator who could lower the individual in order to increase intensity. The peak of the pyramid would enter his/her private region and the victim could be swayed or made to repeatedly descend on this sharp point. The sadistic desires of the torturers might make them add weights to the legs of the victim to aggravate the pain. Some versions also suggest that they would leave the victim in mid-air supported by the ropes for the entire night and then torture him with pyramid by morning.

3)Pear of Anguish

The much feared torture device also referred to as the “choke pear” was the pear which was a metal instrument in the shape of a pear consisting of closed up prongs. This would be inserted into a vagina of a woman or anus of a man and then cranked open so that it opened within the body. This completely destroys organs internally and was used for those accused of being homosexuals or heretics. Sometimes this device was also used in a victim’s mouth leading to breaking of the teeth and eventually heavy bleeding. This was usually done for those who were accused of blasphemy and lying. Some of these pears also had extra metal spikes.

It was one of the most horrific inventions of the middle ages. It was a wooden frame with a pulley, wheel and ropes. The ropes would be used to tie down the arms and legs of the victim in opposite directions of the body and with the help of the wheel, the body of the person would be stretched until his limbs were dislocated from the joints. To make this worse, sometimes a fire was also lit below the victim so that he also burnt during this gruesome process. Also since the victim could hear his own ligaments tearing and joints snapping, he would go through high stages of psychological trauma. The Exxon Valdez was basically an Exxon Corporation tanker containing crude oil inside it. The spill saw the dispersion of almost 11 million gallons of crude oil over more than 100 miles of the Alaska shoreline. This crude oil spill destructed huge amount of wildlife resources, salmon fishes, sharks and whales. Capt. Joseph Hazelwood was mainly blamed for this oil spill accident as he had apparently been drinking and it was due to his carelessness that the Exxon Valdez tanker ran aground and destroyed natural resources at large. The Exxon Corporation ended up paying a huge amount of more than 2 billion dollars for the clean-up of the spill.

This incident took place in the United States of America on March 25, 1911. 8. Deepwater Horizon (Gulf of Mexico)

A massive explosion which took place on the April 20, 2010, had rocked the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, and that’s when the biggest marine oil spill began to take place. No one knew, and no one realized until in the next few months till September, one notices at least thousands of barrels of oil being leaked into the Gulf of Mexico, turning the whole water body into dark brownish colour, indicating the presence of oil. By the time the oil well was sealed and obstructed in September 2010, almost 5 million barrels of oil had already destroyed the economy and ecology of the Gulf area, spilling large amounts of oil and destroying marine life.

This place has been a witness to one of the worst mining disasters and accidents which took place on March 10, 1906. The Courrieres mine which is located near the Pas-de-Calais hills went through a massive explosion, leading to the death of more than a 1000 men and injuring several more others. Reports claimed that toxic gas and smoke was already mixing in the air days before the explosion actually took place, but the miners continued their work at the mine. When the explosion finally took place, the mine owners couldn’t trace a lot of their men, who were found dead after a couple of days of their search. There was an unrest and huge criticism about this mining accident, where survivors were seen coming out of the mine, badly injured and in worse shape, even after 20 days of the explosion.

6. Fukushima Daiichi (Japan)

The Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan gave the world one of the worst and biggest nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011. The complex’s backup power generators were damaged by the tsunami waves, which was triggered by an earthquake, leading to a widespread havoc and the release of substantial and good amount of radioactive material. The waves disturbed the power and backup system of the plant greatly, though the reactors were shut down so that the cooling system of the plant could work. But the cooling system failed due to the great waves of tsunami, leading to a high rise and ejection of radioactive substances. More than tens of thousands of residents were evacuated from the nearby areas and the workers spent almost a month trying to make things fall in place and eliminating the radioactive leakage from the areas.

5. Oppau Explosion (Germany)

The Oppau explosion which took place on the 21^st September, 1921, in Oppau, Germany, saw a heavy loss of lives and property, and major destruction and damage to the social and economic condition of Germany. The BASF plant located in Oppau saw the explosion of their storing tank, which contained huge amount of Ammonium Nitrate and Ammonium Sulphate. The explosion led to the release of these chemicals, destroying all building and resources in that particular area and also in the areas nearby, leading to the death of all workers and a lot many people around the plant. Reports say that the sound of the explosion could be heard at a range of more than 300 kilometres away from the plant.

4. Monongah (United States of America)

Another worst mining disaster took place in a coal mine in Monongah, West Virginia. One of the worst accidents in the history of U.S., an explosion took place in this coal mine on December 6, 1907, leading to the blockage of ventilation systems. The main entrance of the coal mine had collapsed due to the explosion, and the ventilation systems had got damaged due to which the workers were suffocated to death. This happened on one of the busiest working days at the coal mine, when poisonous gases leaked out in the mine leading to the death of many young people, the number rounding up to almost 400 people.
