Do you want to make money blogging? If you do – you’re not alone. More and more bloggers are finding that blogging is a profitable medium. Whether it be to earn a few extra dollars a week to feed their coffee habit, or making enough money to stop them having to get a part time job to get through college, or whether they’ve got it to a point where they are able to make a full time living from their blogging – there are tens of thousands of bloggers who make money blogging.

How to Make Money Blogging

In this page I want to share some information for beginners on how to make money blogging. For a very quick and broad visual intro – check out this Make Money Blogging MindMap which visualizes just SOME of the ways bloggers make money blogging.

First – let me start by sharing my own top Money Making Methods (updated regularly) but below that point you to some great resources and teaching on how to increase your income from blogging.

What follows is a quick summary of my main income streams from blogging. Before you read it though – keep in mind that every blog is unique in how it can make money. Some of the following income streams will work on some blogs a lot better than others – the key is to experiment with as many as possible and see what works best for you.

The following income streams (from a number of blogs) have helped me to earn a six figure income each year for the last 5 years from blogging. I’ve ranked them from highest to lowest.

I hope you find it useful to see the mix and variety of ways that I earn a living from blogging.

1. AdSense

Despite not using it here at ProBlogger any more (here’s why) I continue to use AdSense with amazing effect on my other blogs. I have them all set to show image and text based ads and find that 250×300 pixel ads work best (usually with a blended design). I don’t have much luck with their ‘referrals’ program but their normal ads work a treat and continue to be the biggest earner for me.

2. Affiliate Programs

I run a variety of affiliate programs on my blogs – most of which bring in smaller amounts of money that don’t really justify a category of their own (but which certainly add up).

These include recommending quality products like these here on ProBlogger: Thesis WordPress theme, Yaro’s Blog Mastermind Coaching Program and How to Launch the F*** out of your E-Book (and others) as well as some great products on my photography blog including 123 of Digital Imaging, David DuChemin’s amazing Photography E-Books and Mitchell Kanashkevich’s great ebooks.

The great thing about many of these programs is that they are of such high quality that they sell themselves and I am being emailed from readers who sign up to them thanking me for the recommendation!

3. E-Book Sales

Last time I did a wrap up of how I make money blogging this category did not exist for me – I didn’t really have any of my own products to sell at all. However in the last year or so I’ve released 3 E-books – 31 Days to Build a Better Blog,The Essential Guide to Portrait Photography and Photo Nuts and Bolts: Know Your Camera and Take Better Photos. While these products all only sell for under $20 they certainly add up and some months this has been my biggest category of income. The reason they were only ranking at #3 in the last month was that I didn’t do a product launch (I wrote about one launch which brought in $72,000 in a week here). This is an income stream I see growing as I add more E-books to my range (expect 3 in the coming few months).

4. Continuity Programs

This is another newer category for me but one that continues to grow.

A continuity program is a site where you earn a recurring income from people who subscribe to a service you offer.

For me this includes two sites – ProBlogger.com and Third Tribe Marketing. Both programs are membership sites and generate monthly income from the thousands of members that they have as a part of them.

5. Private Ad Sales/Sponsorships

Private ad sales directly to advertisers have fallen for me in the last year (they previously ranked #3 on this list). This is partly due to a change in my own focus but also partly due to the economy as it is. I should note that this area does vary a little from month to month depending upon the campaigns we’re asked to run – we’ve had a couple of months where it actually ranked #2 in the last year.

This includes ad sales of the 125 x 125 ads here at ProBlogger as well as a campaign or two atDigital Photography School.

6. Chitika

Chitka continues to be a great performer for me on my blogs. They traditionally have worked best on product related blogs although theirPremium ad units now convert well on a larger range of blogs.

While I’ve focused a little less on Chitika in the last 6 months (mainly as I’ve released my own products and moved a little away from advertising) they do continue to perform well where I use them and over the time I’ve been using Chitika they’ve now earned me over a quarter of a million dollars – as a result I can’t recommend them enough!

7. Amazon Associates

Amazon’s affiliate program has been one of my big movers in the last 12 months. I used to make a few odd dollars from it – however in recent times it has become a significant earner for me (in fact it’s now earned me over $100,000 since I started using it). Christmas time (and the lead up to it) is a particularly good time for Amazon – last December it would have ranked #2 on this list.

8. ProBlogger Job Boards

The job boards here at ProBlogger continue to grow each month in the number of advertisements that are being bought. This enabled me to invest most of the money that they’d earned a while back into getting a new back end for the boards and to redesign them. These job boards now bring in over $1000 a month in revenue which is pretty nice considering that they are so low maintenance to run. They also offer a service to readers and add value to the overall blog.

The only problem that I face with the job boards is that there are so many bloggers looking for work that the demand for jobs far exceeds the supply. On the good side of things is that advertisers are reporting getting amazing quality of applications.

9. Speaking Fees

I get asked to do a lot of speaking and increasingly they are paid opportunities. I’m not able to do as many as I would like (mainly because I live in Australia and most of what I’m asked to do is overseas and I only travel 2-3 times a year) – however in April I did a couple of events and the income was enough to include in this list.

Other Income

In addition to all of the above there are many smaller incomes. Many of these are from smaller advertising programs that I test but none are big enough to really rate a mention here.

The other income stream that there was no actual money from in April was book royalties from theProBlogger Book. These are only paid every 6 or so months (not in April). It’s probably also worth mentioning that authors don’t tend to make a whole lot of money on book royalties – you don’t write books to get rich (unless you sell a lot of them).

When looking for ways to make money online you will certainly come across countless opportunities in affiliate and network marketing. To a newbie or not so newbie seeking home business opportunities, it’s easy to get confused over the many terms and definitions used. There are distinct differences and it’s essential to understand them. The best way to explain them is in terms of how compensation is paid. Knowing this information can help you decide which one is a better fit for you.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

In affiliate marketing, you are marketing the products/services of another merchant. You get paid a commission when a customer purchases that item through you.

Some affiliate marketing programs feature 2 levels, meaning you not only make money on the sale; but you can also make commissions on the sales of that customer should they sign up to become an affiliate as well.

For example, you will earn commission when you sell the product to customer A and if customer A signs up to be an affiliate and manages to sell to customer A1, you get compensated too, in addition to person A. You will not make any money from the sales of Customer A1, should they sign up as an affiliate too.

Most affiliate programs are free to join and the products are easier to sell because they are typically low-cost. There are thousands of products that you can be an affiliate for and commissions can range from 20 – 75% per sale.

However, it’s a one time transaction only. So you must continually look to promote the next big product since there is typically no income from residual sales.

A “super affiliate” is one that is able to generate thousands of commissions by himself. An affiliate marketer is in business for themselves and by themselves. They do not have the benefit of leveragingthe work of others.

Affiliate marketing also does not require you to interact with people, so you are not really building a rapport with your customer base.

Although as a bonus from buying through them, some affiliate marketers may offer personal coaching or some one-on-one time, that is not the objective. It’s all about the sale.

Plus, they understand that most people won’t take them up on the offer anyway. It’s like the rebate offer. How many of us actually take the time to fill them out and mail them in? A very small percentage, which is why stores offer them mainly by mail only. They too understand that the objective is only the sale. So they offer a discount by rebate, knowing all the while, you won’t even turn the darn thing in.

What Is Network Marketing?

With network marketing, you must like people and want to build residual long-term income while leveraging the work of others. The main difference between network marketing and affiliate marketing is that in network marketing you are building a downline of distributors.

You cannot build a downline of affiliate marketers to have residual income. Consider network marketing if building a large organization is attractive to you.

In network marketing you not only get get paid to sell products, but you also make money as products move through your downline.

This includes reps you personally sponsor and your downline distributors which can go several levels deep. Exactly how many reps and levels you can earn money on will differ from one mlm company to the next. It can be several levels or unlimited.

The advantage of using multi-level compensation is that you are able to leverage the work of your downline. It was John Paul Getty who said “I’d rather have 1% of the effort of 100 men than 100% of my own effort.”

This is not an easy feat however. There are many factors at play, chief among them being choosing the right mlm home based business, with the right product and leadership.

Retention and recurring customer use is what provides true residual income in network marketing. After an initial investment of 12-36 months of hard work, the network marketing business model can generate earnings for a lifetime. With a solid network marketing company, residual income is almost guaranteed.

Network marketing is essentially a people building business. You build people and people build your business. As you continue to help them meet their goals and develop strong relationships, your ability to make huge sums of money will increase substantially as your network grows.

With affiliate marketing, your income is limited. With that being said, if you truly have no interest in connecting with and helping others or if you’re solely driven by making money, please for the sake of the network marketing industry, become an affiliate marketer.

However, if the idea of long-term residual income, the ability to meet new people, build great relationships, the fulfillment you get from helping your team members build their business, and steady growing paychecks sounds appealing to you, then be a network marketer.

Within this example a 'merchant' is an online retailer with a transactional website where you can buy products or services. An 'affiliate' is an online publisher or partner who has access to traffic.

Affiliates are traditionally website owners who can send traffic, via links to your site. They do this on the basis that any sales generated from this traffic will earn them an agreed commission. This reward model is commonly known as Cost Per Action (CPA) and is more transparent and accountable than the older Cost Per Click (CPC) model.

There are many different affiliate types to work with and these relationships are facilitated by a merchant joining the network and using the promotion tools available. In every case the affiliate takes the risk of sending you traffic at no cost to you as you only have to reward them if their traffic completes a purchase.

A consumer visits an affiliate's website (for example a shopping portal or directory)

The customer finds a product (or retailer) and clicks the link to be taken to the merchant's site to review or purchase (this click-through stores a network cookie on their PC). *

The customer completes the sale online. Tracking software records the key purchase data such as sale amount, IP, date and time, etc and reports this to Affiliate Window. The customer journey has now concluded.

The merchant is able to allow a period of 'grace' to consider the sale complete and pays commission due to the affiliate for sales generated.* This cookie lasts for a predetermined period set by the merchant allowing any sale to be attributed to the referring affiliate as long as the unique visitor completes a transaction within this cookie period.

The value of affiliate marketing

Online shopping has been predicted by to account for 40% of all UK retail sales by 2020*. Currently households spend 10% (£980) of their annual shopping budget online typically on holidays, electronics, clothes and gifts items.

Affiliate marketing in the UK grew by an estimated 45% during 2007, taking the total value of online sales generated by this channel for that year to over £3 billion**. With a conservative estimate of commissions and fees paid out to affiliate networks amounting to £186 million, an increase of 40% on 2006. This covers both the affiliate commission and network override.

The same report** found that UK merchants involved in affiliate marketing drive 16% of their online sales via this channel and that 78% of them expected to be "more reliant" on affiliate marketing by 2009.

In light of these statistics and predictions it is clear that affiliate marketing should form part of an integrated and successful digital marketing strategy.

Simply provide context sensitive advertising for your website. So they try to match the best ads for the content of your pages. If they cannot find any suitable ads then they display advertising from Google AdSense (theirs not yours!) When trialled on this site they performed only about half as well as Google AdSense.

CPAway.com

CPAway a USA based affiliate network (based in Florida), and they run campaigns for visitors from the USA, Canada and UK as well as some which are for Internationals (i.e. not country of origin specific).

They vet every application so the application process is not quick. They also ask for more information as part of this vetting process than any other network reviewed to date, presumably not all of which is strictly necessary as our reviewer declined to give some information and was still approved.

Once approved you are assigned your own affiliate manager should you wish to avail yourself of their services. They also send out regular campaign updates by email to inform you of what offers (i.e. ads) are expiring and which ones have been added to their network.

Easy AdSense for Your Blog

Blogger provides a simple way for you to make money with your blog. AdSense is Google's content-targeted advertising program. This means that you don't select keywords or categories for your ads. Instead, Google's servers determine what your posts are about and display the most relevant ads to your readers. 1. Sign up for a Google Affiliate Network account.

2. To sign up for advertiser programs, click Advertisers, then click the Join tab.

3. Check out our Help Center content on generating links for your advertisers.

4. Once you've chosen which links to post on your blog, copy and paste them into Notepad, Text Edit, or a similar program.

5. Log into your Blogger account and go to the Layout page.

6. Select HTML/Javascript under 'Add A Gadget.'

What is an XML Sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a quite easy XML file that contains information regarding one or more URLs on your Web site. The information that is stored there helps search engines better spider your website. All it requests to be is a list of URLs for your Web site, but to get more out of it, you want to take account of other information as well.

This allows search engines to crawl the site more cleverly. Sitemaps are a URL addition protocol and match robots.txt, a URL exclusion protocol.

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo united to support sitemaps, a standardized method of submitting web pages through feeds to the search engines. Today, the three are now joined by Ask.com in supporting the system and an extension of it called autodiscovery. This is where the major search engines will automatically locate your sitemaps file if the location is listed in a robots.txt file. Announcements are up from Google and Ask now Yahoo and Microsoft.

Information on how to create sitemaps files can be found at the Sitemaps.org site. Aside from the sitemaps XML formal, you can also provide RSS 2.0 or Atom 0.3 or 1.0 feeds. That’s handy for those with blogs that already generate these feeds.

Sitemaps XML files too complicated? Don’t run a blog? Note that the site has newly expanded information on how you can submit a simple list of URLs in a text file.

In the past, if you created a sitemaps file, you then had to manually tell the search engines where to find it. With today’s announcement, search engines will check your robots.txt file for a link to a sitemaps file, then get the file from that location. This is a big plus because all the major search engines regularly check robots.txt files as part of their ordinary crawling.

Sitemap: LOCATION-OF-SITEMAPS-FILE

Replace the LOCATION-OF-SITEMAPS-FILE with the actual location. For example, if you ran a site at mywonderfulsite.com and had a sitemaps file called allmypages.xml in your top level, the reference would be like this:

Have more than one sitemaps file? Ideally, you’d create a special "sitemaps index" file that links to all of them, then put a link to the sitemaps index file in your robots.txt file. If that sounds like too much work, you can have more than one sitemaps URL listed in the robots.txt file.

Aside from autodiscovery, you can also ping Google and Yahoo with the location of your file. The Sitemaps.org site has more instructions on this in general. For specifics:

Google: See here. Note that this pinging is different than the pinging Google also supportsfor blog search.

Yahoo: See here and here. Unlike Google, the same pinging system is used for both web and blog search, to my understanding.

Both Google and Yahoo also allow you to manually submit sitemaps files. In both cases, doing this via their Google Webmaster Central or Yahoo Site Explorer systems gives you access to specialized monitoring and reporting tools or information on how they crawl you.

There are some common mistakes made by advance or new users of Google Adsense. These mistakes lead to block account and give nothing from Google other than wastage of time and tension.

1. Never click your own ads in whatever way

Coincidentally this is number 1, because i want to tell you 85% of why Google Adsense ban you is because you either tried to be fun to test the system by clicking on your own ads or you gave an accidental click on your site. For those who tried to test the system, good luck, as for those who gave an accidental click, there is a way to help you not get ban, give Google Adsense a courtesy mail and tell them you accidentally click on your own ads and they will help you in some ways. 2. Never Change or implement new codes in your Adsense

When you have configured your Adsense code, make sure you do not meddle with the script nor the ads codes. The only code that you may change are the color and banner size code, again i warn those who are not proficient in HTML to not try this, go back to the product and reset the configurations.

3. Open 1 Account for 10 websites

If you have 10 websites which you want to use Adsense, then 1 account is sufficient, there is no requirement for you to open another 10 more, even with 10 more a small mistakes can land all your accounts into the "publisher burying sections".

4. Give labels like sponsors or advertisements only

Do not misled your ads to your audiences, that is one of Google's principle, place labels like Sponsors, advertisements are fine but not "Click here for more" or "Great offers". Don't get banned by Google for such acts.

5. Never let your ads launch in a new browser

It is not advisable for your to change the coding in the first place and by adding a code like target ing ads to open in a new browser is against the TOS. Some publishers uses ads code in "Target=_blanck" that is against Google policies.

6. Do not join click farms that provide you click on your ads

They claimed that they’ll deliver clicks to your ads and all you do is to join and pay them by certain amount. Always keep in mind that using such methods to earn your clicks is highly prohibited. Don't pay money for things that don't return

7. Using 3rd party programs to improves impressions

Like how you should never use Click ads program, you should not use auto surf or paid surfing program to increase your impressions with Google, this will get you out of Adsense program.

8. Encouraging Clicks

It is not advisable that you encourage others to click on your ads, sentences like "click on mine ads and i will click on yours" or "click on my ads to discover more" is all prohibited and can cause your Adsense account to be disabled.

9. Pop-up or pop-under ads are not allowed to work with Adsense

Adsense discourages having both their ads with pop-up or pop-under ads from external services.

10. Never send your Adsense ads out through email

If you are one of those who are trying to outsmart Google, they beat you first. Using HTML emails and delivering your Adsense is not going to work, it might just give you a slap on your own face and prepare for your Adsense to be closed in the next few days.

11. Do not use directive methods to lure clicks

While placing images with borders to separate ads is not a problem, having images like arrows or other graphical gimmicks that directs others to click is also not allowed.

12. Ensure you are language supported

Presenting irrelevant ads on other languages is also not allowed so make sure your ads actually supports these languages “Chinese (simplified), Japanese, Danish, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, English, Polish, Finnish, Portuguese, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Swedish, Italian and Turkish”. Do not use Adsense if your language is not stated here.

13. Do not mask your Adsense ads

While blending your ads with your content is one of the way you can improve your earnings, take note that Google does not allow you to blend the color of the url with the background. Do not hide away relevant components that are shown by Google.

Google Adsense sends a PIN code to every new publisher when their earnings touch $10 mark. Google needs the publisher to enter the PIN code mailed to them by standard mail in order to verify the address details of the publisher. However, there are circumstances where publishers don’t get their PIN code by mail even after trying for three times. This problem is happening mostly with the Asian publishers who belong to countries such as India, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan etc.

Whenever a publisher earns $10 by displaying Adsense ads, Google send an PIN code to the publisher by standard mail. Publisher need to receive the PIN code and enter it to validate the PIN verification purpose. It normally takes 40 days for the mail to reach the publisher after reaching the $10 revenue mark. Now if the publisher does not receive the PIN code within 40 days, he can request for an reissue of PIN code. Again, if the publisher does not receive the PIN code after the second attempt, he can request it for the third and last time. But what if he does not receive it this time also?

You will be taken to an page where you need to enter your Google Adsense publisher ID, you can get it from the top right corner of your Adsense interface. Enter your publisher ID and submit your request. Once you submit your request, Google Support Team will contact you by email shortly (generally within 2 days). They will ask you to provide either your NIC or Bank statement or Utility Bill by email attachment as scanned copy. Simply scan one of those documents and send them.

Within 2-3 working days you will get an another email from the support team with the subject as “Your Adsense Account has been Validated”. That’s it. Now your Adsense account has been officially validated by

Google, you don’t need to enter the Adsense PIN code again and you will receive all your earnings till date in the next payment cycle.

Over the past few years the biggest hurdles I can see for any business to succeed online is their ability to be able to measure the traffic to their website. It seems alien to me that a company would spend hundreds, thousands if not more on building a website but fail to add the basic features of a web analytics like Google Analytics to track the ROI of their website.

It will be a sure path to failure if a business decides not to track their website visitors and they lose valuable business intelligence. I have found there is no common element in not installing web analytics as I’ve seen the smallest single page website to the largest retailers in Australia have all at times been caught with their eye off the wheel. There is no excuse why your web developers should not add in the ability for you to track the performance of your website unless they have something to hide or you don’t care about business intelligence.

If you use Java script drop down menus, image maps or image links, be sure to put text links somewhere on the page for the spiders to follow.

Videos that show up in Google blended search results don’t just come from YouTube. Be sure to submit your videos to other quality video sites like Metacafe, AOL, MSN and Yahoo.

Use the words “image” or “picture” in your photo ALT descriptions and captions. A lot of searches are for a keyword plus one of those words.

Enable “Enhanced image search” in your Google Webmaster Central account. Images are a big part of the new blended search results, so allowing Google to find your photos will help your SEO efforts.

Add viral components to your content. Things like reviews, sharing functions, ratings and visitor comments, etc. Anything that brings a reader back or would make the reader recommend the page to others.

SEO Keyword Tips

The SEO mantra is "Content is King", so be sure to have good unique content that will focus on your primary keyword or keyword phrase. Not only will it make it easier to focus a keyword organically, but it will act as link bait for the creation of real organic backlinks.

Give each page a focus on a single keyword phrase. Don’t try to optimize the page for several keywords at once.

Check your server headers. Search for “check server header” to find free online tools for this. You want to be sure your URLs report a “200 OK” status or “301 Moved Permanently ” for redirects. If the status shows anything else, check to be sure your URLs are set up properly and used consistently throughout your site.

Be sure you have a unique, keyword focused Title tag on every page of your site. And, if you MUST have the name of your company in it, put it at the end. Unless you are a major brand name that is a household name, your business name will probably get few searches.

Use captions with your images. As with newspaper photos, place keyword rich captions with your images.

Surround video content on your pages with keyword rich text. The search engines look at surrounding content to define the usefulness of the video for the query.

If you are promoting a physical location, focus on search phrases, not single keywords, and put your location in your text ("Hertfordshire Wedding Dress Shop"; not "our wedding dress shop") to help you get found in local searches.

Use keywords and keyword phrases appropriately in text links, image ALT attributes and even your domain name.

Search engines want natural language content. Don’t try to stuff your text with keywords. It won’t work. Search engines look at how many times a term is in your content and if it is abnormally high, will count this against you rather than for you.

Not only should your links use keyword anchor text, but the text around the links should also be related to your keywords. In other words, surround the link with descriptive text.

Off Page SEO Tips

LINK BUILDING TIPS

Build a network of backlinks using your keyword phrase as the link.

Give link love to Get link love. Don’t be stingy with linking out. Why would others link to you if you wouldn't link to them?

Be sure links to your site and within your site use your keyword phrase. In other words, if your target is “green oysters” then link to “green oysters” instead of a “Website” link.

Links (especially deep links) from a high PageRank site are golden. High PR indicates high trust, so the back links will carry more weight.

Use absolute links. Not only will it make your on-site link navigation less prone to problems (like links to and from https pages), but if someone scrapes your content, you’ll get backlink credit from it.

Some of your most valuable links might not appear in web sites at all but be in the form of e-mail communications such as newsletters and e-zines.

You get NOTHING from paid links except a few clicks unless the links are embedded in body text and NOT obvious sponsored links.

Links from .edu domains are given nice weight by the search engines. Run a search for possible non-profit .edu sites that are looking for sponsors. That said, .GOV and .EDU links are not as powerfull as reported by many bloggers and sales sites. If they were you would never get into the top 10 of a search engine in the first place.

Give people reason to link to your site. Linkbaiting is simply good content.

When link building, think quality, not quantity. One single, good, authoritative link can do a lot more for you than a dozen poor quality links, which can actually hurt you.

Got a new web site you want spidered? Submitting through Google’s regular submission form can take weeks. The quickest way to get your site spidered is by getting a link to it through another quality site.

Google SEO Tips

Don’t be obsessed with PageRank. It is just one part of the ranking algorithm. A site with lower PR can actually outrank one with a higher PR.

To create the best chances of your videos being indexed, make a video sitemap and list it in your Google Webmaster Central account.

Optimize the text in your RSS feed just like you should with your posts and web pages. Use descriptive, keyword rich text in your title and description.

Pay attention to the context surrounding your images. Images can rank based on text that surrounds them on the page. Pay attention to keyword text, headings, etc.

You’re better off letting your site pages be found naturally by the crawler. Good global navigation and linking will serve you much better than relying only on an XML Sitemap.

There are two ways to NOT see Google’s Personalized Search results:

(1) Log out of Google

(2) Append &pws=0 to the end of your search URL in the search bar

See if your hosting company offers “Sticky” forwarding when moving to a new domain. This allows temporary forwarding to the new domain from the old, retaining the new URL in the address bar so that users can gradually get used to the new URL.

The most important of the SEO Tips to bear in mind are Text, Links, Popularity and Reputation.

Make sure your site is easy to use. This can influence your link building ability and popularity and, thus, your ranking.

Search engines like unique content that is also quality content. There can be a difference between unique content and quality content. Make sure your content is both.

If you have your main page as a splash page that is all Flash or one big image, place text and navigation links below the fold.

SEO is useless if you have a weak or non-existent call to action. Make sure your call to action is clear and present.

SEO is not a one-shot process. The search landscape changes daily, so expect to work on your optimization daily.

Don’t design your web site without considering SEO. Make sure your web designer understands your expectations for organic SEO. Doing a retrofit on your shiny new Flash-based site after it is built won’t cut it. Spiders can crawl text, not Flash or images.

Check for canonicalization issues www and non-www domains. Decide which you want to use and 301 redirect the other to it. In other words, if http://www.domain.com is your preference, then http://domain.com should redirect to it.

Check the link to your home page throughout your site. Is index.html appended to your domain name? If so, you’re splitting your links. Outside links go to http://www.domain.com and internal links go to http://www.domain.com/index.html.

Ditch the index.html or default.php or whatever the page is and always link back to your domain.

Frames, Flash and AJAX all share a common problem - you can’t link to a single page. It’s either all or nothing. Don’t use Frames at all and use Flash and AJAX sparingly for best SEO results.

Your URL file extension doesn’t matter. You can use .html, .htm, .asp, .php, etc. and it won’t make a difference as far as your SEO is concerned.

If you are on a shared server, do a blacklist check to be sure you’re not on a proxy with a spammer or banned site. Their negative notoriety could affect your own rankings.

Be aware that by using services that block domain ownership information when you register a domain, Google might see you as a potential spammer.

If your site content doesn’t change often, your site needs a blog because search spiders like fresh text. Blog at least three time a week with good, fresh content to feed those little crawlers.

When optimizing your blog posts, optimize your post title tag independently from your blog title.

If you have pages on your site that are very similar (you are concerned about duplicate content issues) and you want to be sure the correct one is included in the search engines, place the URL of your preferred page in your sitemaps.

The whole search engine optimization industry is still affectively in its infancy. To begin with, SEO has been around only since about late 1996, early 1997.

This lays to bed the claims of a lot of companies that they have been in the business for years. It simply isn't feasible for someone to claim they have been performing search engine consultancy for 15 years or more, and if they have, then the stuff they were working on 15 years ago is a totally different kettle of fish to what we have today.

This cost of entry to this industry is so cheap that the skill levels of a lot of the "SEO Specialists" is questionable at best, and their offerings may as well be classed as an SEO Scam due to them even pretending to be able to provide a service.

Unfortunately, there are a growing number of bad SEO companies and SEO scams that prey upon naive site owners. Before you consult with an SEO company protect yourself from falling prey to an SEO scam artist and educate yourself first.

If you're in the market for either advice or a consultant to perform SEO on your website then there are some very easy things to do that could save you a lot of grief later.

Don't be afraid to ask some questions!

If they can't respond to you in the language of your website perfectly, then they probably won't be able to optimize the site for customers to read it properly. Bad English on my site is allowed (it's my site!) but if I'm looking at a professional site, this turns me off right away. I don't doubt that this will be the same for any language

Can they give examples of sites they have worked on in the past?

While this is the bit that most people are scared off it's the most important.

Don't be worried about not understanding the jargon. SEO is the same as ANY technical field, in that half the jargon is there to make the engineers look clever. They aren't and it's all ABA (another bloody acronym). Don't trust anyone to perform anything on your site that they can't explain. It either means they don't actually fully understand what they will be doing or they will be performing some kind of bad SEO.

What sort of reports can you expect to get for your cash? With the number of free tools and utilities available in this market, they should get something that makes sense to you. When they send a report to you, make sure you understand what it actually means. If they can't tell you then they have just run your site through a reporting program for the look of it. You could have done that yourself.

Social bookmarking is a key element of Web 2.0, and it is a great way to get a great deal of traffic, in a very short amount of time. It is very easy and fast to do, and it’s also free.

Social bookmarking sites are essentially places where people who are registered can list – or bookmark – their favorite sites. Those bookmarks are shared with all other users of the social bookmarking site as well. Millions of people use these sites on a daily basis.Here is what you do. You go to http://www.onlywire.com/ and register.

Again, it’s free. Once you’ve registered and logged in, you will be presented with what looks like a form. This is actually a list of social bookmarking sites, and you need to open up each of those sites (in a new page or tab) and register with them.

Go back to the page at onlywire.com and put in the username and password you used for each of those sites, and click the save button. Now, follow the directions on the site, and move the onlywire.com icon up into your toolbar. You are ready to start social bookmarking!

You can also ask others to add your page to their favorite social bookmarking site. Unlike search engines, where there are a variety of factors in play that determine how high you rank, with the social bookmarking sites, when more people add your site to their bookmarks at the social networking sites, the higher your page appears in the search results at those sites.

You can’t pay them for a higher listing. So, ask friends and relatives to bookmark your site, and also post an invitation to do this on your website directly as well.

You will also be building inbound links to your site, which will aid in search engine optimization. Remember that these sites are considered ‘important’ by the search engines, which makes those inbound links very valuable.

Note that many people now use social bookmarking sites to find information that they are interested in more than they use search engines. The search engines seem to have become polluted with advertisements that may not even be related to the keywords.
