Schalke 04 forward Jefferson Farfan will be out until next year after sustaining a knee injury in Peru's World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, the Bundesliga club said.

Schalke said in a statement that Farfan, who has scored 22 goals in 102 Bundesliga appearances, had torn an anterior ligament in his knee and would have to rest for four weeks before starting two weeks of strengthening work.
In another blow for Huub Stevens's team, captain Benedikt Hoewedes sustained a similar injury in Germany's 3-0 win over Netherlands.
He limped off injured during the second half of Peru's 2-0 defeat in Quito on Tuesday, although returned to the pitch to join in a melee following the final whistle.

Schalke, fifth in the Bundesliga, said the length of Hoewedes's absence would be known after tests on Thursday.

Struggling Mexican giants America named Miguel Herrera as their coach and charged him with restoring the team to the top of the first division.

Herrera, a former defender, has been most closely associated with Atlante, having had four spells with them as a player including retiring there and two as coach, from 2002 to 2004 and from last year until this appointment at America.

"I have it in my head to start off with a title... We'll sit down to look at those transfer-listed players to see which players can help us," he added.
Herrera comes in for Alfredo Tena, sacked last week along with sporting vice-president Luis Alves after America finished one from bottom of the standings, failing to make the eight-team knockout phase of the Apertura championship.

"It's the greatest club in Mexico. My challenge is the recovery of the team as a unit. We need results at once because this team must recover the place they've had in history," said Herrera, 43.
