De-Vision "6 Feet Underground" Album Review

Not as great as I thought...
I expected more from them this time around but it seemed that they mellowed a bit too much on this album. It's more on the slower/softer side of De/Vision.

The title track was boring as dripping molasses. The rest of the songs faired a bit better. Nothing grabs you from the onset. Get to listen to it a few more times to appreciate some of the tracks here.

Good De/Vision album overall though.

Definitely not for casual listeners.

Assemblage 23 "Let the Wind Erase Me" Album Review

Good but I'm Nervous About the Album Now
This is a really good song but not nearly as strong as the lead singles from 'Failure' ("Disappoint") or the last album ("Document"). Outside of the mesmerizing chorus nothing grips me here. The music is solid but it's more of a backdrop to the lyrics than a force on its own. In that respect, it reminds a bit of "Drive". It's a great song but not quite a powerhouse - Perfect as the #2 or #3 song off an album as "Drive" was. I should be getting the album in the mail in a couple of days and am anxious to hear it.

The main issue I have with this is that it doesn't come out and scream "This is Assemblage 23!" The better songs from 'Failure' did that; You knew who it was and it defined a new twist in Elektro / Futurepop. Since then Tom has continued to put out good music but the sound is moderating to the scene. It doesn't help that bands like Seabound and Imperative Reaction, good bands no doubt, sound very similar to the new A23. Now on this song I actually don't know if anyone could really tell the difference if you didn't already know who it was. For instance, you take a friend to a club, this comes on and they've never heard it. Let's assume that they are knowedgeable in the scene. Tell them, "Oh, it's the new Imperative Reaction single." They won't question you. They may say, "It's sounds a bit like A23." Then again, that's exactly what they said when they heard Imperative Reaction's last album. Maybe this is not a clear knock on A23 then, but the point is that these bands' sounds are converging a bit too much at the moment and A23 isn't doing enough to differentiate themselves. Hopefully the album will prove me wrong.

The Prodigy "Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned" Album Review

Not 100% but still ok
After the successful Fat Of The Land, this new album just doesn't really have anywhere near the interest. Fat Of The Land had trippy songs that pushed music to its highest boundaries. Always Outnumbered... on the other hand still has a handful of well developed songs. The best song without a doubt is 'You'll Be Under My Wheels' which reminds me alot of 'One Man Army' off the Spawn Soundtrack. This song is energetic and true to the Prodigy sound and vocals. Also check out the Smokin' Aces Soundtrack for a new Prodigy song called 'First Warning', it is an excellent track and I hope their next album is all in that style.
Another song on Always Outnumbered that is worth mentioning is 'Medusa's Path', now this song is very much like the song 'Narayan' from Fat Of The Land, with its ambient atmosphere that just takes you on a journey into another world. It's impossible to stop this track before it finishes, it's like a nice dream.
Hopefully the next Prodigy album won't have songs like 'Get Up Get Off', that song is not The Prodigy! It sounds like The Black Eyed Peas, and they p!ss me off. 'Pheonix' is a good song though, but there's this one sample in it that p!sses me off a bit (it's a chic saying lalala in a whispering tone). 'Spitfire' is a good song aswell but a bit too long (3 minutes would have been enough. 5 mins is just a bit too much). But one thing's for sure this album is not an epic one like The Fat Of The Land.

I would change the order of the songs aswell as remove some. It would look like this:

Nothing that special, just not as bland as most of the genre

Mildly impressive set of dance tracks rarely step outside of their methodical pulse pounding ways to show the talent that does make this outfit better then just another DJ. Though the majority are vocal laden, catchy numbers, intercut with a few more eclectic tracks, the album hardly rises above it's head bobbing notions to glue any melodies too the picture. When they are not busy ripping off artists like Depeche Mode (Keep It Coming) or sounding like a second rate Junior Boys, Swayzak moves along enough to merit a listen, but hardly.

Review
While early glitch music experiments were the central feature of "Dream Cell" 's stylistic mix, it's successor "Silvermandalas" concentrated on drone and trance directions. By contrast, "Requiem Settings (1-6)" is a more linear work, with a greater emphasis on subjective association. Despite the title, a September 11 Requiem it isn't - at least not by design (the CD was already completed by the time of the attacks). Two factors determined the project's theme: my father's death, and the place where I lived at the time these recordings began. I was renting an apartment amongst the rolling hills of Groesbeek in Holland, and after finding two WW II grenades (one German, one American) in the woods behind the house, I began to discover the significance of the area. These killing fields marked the battles that began Europe's liberation from the Nazis. Two metal fragments, possible shrapnel) discovered in this same area revealed a pleasing bell-like quality when struck together. This bell-tine provides the static association in "Requiem Settings", while the train sounds heard throughout the work represent the aspect of movement - the sense of journeying to another existence. This sense is never more apparent than in the final setting - the Requiem itself, where the choirs drift in and out of radio static, all the time underpinned by a grandiose musical funeral procession.

AFX "Analogue Bubblebath 3" Album Review

A great bath, but the fourth one was better.
First of all, I'm not sure where the titles for these tracks came from. My copy of the album didn't have a track list. Maybe they came from a previous issue of this record...

Anyway, this is a great work of raw techno. My personal favorites were track 1, 4 through 8, 10,(an intense short track,) and 13. I love the first song! It makes me want to take on the world,(in a good way, if that makes sense). The second track is a long, repetitive string of alien notes with an awesome bass track to follow. 3 isn't too interesting. The fourth is an awesome piece fit for any mind numbing rave. Track 5 is really good, but it seems to come out quieter than the other songs, so I just turn it louder. 6 seems to have an oriental flare of some sort, pretty neat actually. (I'd bet anything that the sample at the beginning is a vacuum cleaner). Track 7 presents a really good loop of synth percussion. The eighth song is really pretty, I like it a lot, it's very comforting. Like 3, 9 isn't too interesting either, but grows more entertaining towards the end. Track 10 is half-a-minute of something really intense. Track 11 sounds like it should have been on Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2, and 12 is a minute of what sounds like rain and a man hyperventilating. The last song is quite sinister, like an angry synthesizer gaining revenge on humanity. All the way through I can't help but think that AFX put more effort into producing Analogue Bubblebath 4. Sure there are only five tracks,(the last being a snippet of an interview with Evel Knievel,) but they just seem much more thoughtful. I haven't gotten to buying the first bubblebath yet so I can't say anything about that one. Both 3 and 4 are great buys, especially 4. Thanks for reading.

I bought about a month ago finally I got in today, It's a great example of the "Berlin Sound", with tracks as awesome as "Everyone deserves to be...." to "Lost in La Playa". Sex in Dallas are the perfect soundtrack to what it should have been an amazing summer. A great cd with some eletro pop oriented sounds, a couple of more electro. Landau's debut disc for Merck, thepicompromise is the first album in a long time that has kept my head un-still for its entire run of playfully complex, skittering tracks brimming with original textures and melodies that toy with the idea of overexposing too much classic IDM influence, but maintain their composure in that respect.

"Six Ways To Sunday" sets the precedent with eager mid-tempo rhythms emerging from static electricity as bright melodies fade in and out expressing their sentiments with somber flute on "Brokenfader Break" and antiqued pads on "Spring Showers." The jazzy "About Face" could be easily confused with an out-take from Double Figure-era Plaid, yet Landau manage to keep it original with an inventive use of a vocal sample that makes it another piece of the sonic puzzle rather than a separate entity on its own. If truly unique rhythm-contortion with some flair interests you, give "Fondue" a stir and listen as its creamy loops fold and collapse into each other with mind-bending effects. Landau completes their set of collected emotions with the perfectly complex "Independence," where the best elements of their melodies and rhythms all mesh together for a fitting end to an impressive start.

thepicompromise is buttery emotional electronica 6 years in the baking for those of us with a taste for deep dish that fails to disappoint. Call in your order and see for yourself.

The two girls moved in Athens on 2000 and on 2003 they made MARSHEAUX in order to express their love for the electropop of the 80's and the sounds of synthesizers and drum machines. The problem of naming the band was easily solved by combining the first syllables of their names, MARIANTHI and SOPHIE. Their first release was a cover of the classic HOT BUTTER's Popcorn with a great success in Greece. They make synthpop music in the tradition that YAZOO, HUMAN LEAGUE, DEPECHE MODE and OMD did.

Good stuff, as usual
I Feel Loved is obviously wonderful on here, especially the extended Instrumental, but Dirt is probably the best thing about this nice little CD - Single, Any true fan would have this single in a second. True, only three tracks, but Dirt and the I Feel Loved instrumental make up for that.

I've been a Pink Dots fan since I can't even remember when. Probably 10 years or so. And I never knew this album existed until now, and lemmie tell you...this album is just unbelieveable. It has more of the older sounding instruments that you would expect to hear on the album, "Curse". Except this album is far more atmospheric and abstract. A perfect mixture of both. Songs that are happy and sad simultaneously. I LOVE it! Edward Ka-Spel is, and always will be, a musical genius. Not one bad song on here. Of course you'd never really expect to hear a boring pink dots song anyways. I know everyone that are fans of whatever band always say, "This is a MUST HAVE for fans". But when I say it, I'm damn serious. This really IS a MUST HAVE if your a fan of Ka-Spel/Pink Dots/Tear Garden/MIMIR etc etc...

For his 25th CD as Nocturnal Emissions, Nigel Ayers has created a work that balances noise and vocal samples against a wild array of loops and rhythm tracks. It's a tantalizingly spicy cocktail that sounds nothing like an out-of-control hip-hop dump truck being driven backwards through an octogenarian's barn dance. "Collateral Salvage" is beat-oriented toe-tappin' music constructed from hundreds of different samples of indie guitar-pop, interspersed with fragments of song and surreal speech. Strong bass lines run throughout, and the rhythms are a blend of funk and exotic eastern promise. Subtle tonalities, acoustic guitar flavors, swingin' saxophones, flutes and horns are piled high over tabla and soaring vintage analogue synthesizers. Mbiras mix with driftwood marimbas, wicky-wicky guitars and pitch-shifted sitars in a swirling belly-dance dub sock-hop. "Collateral Salvage" was inspired by the sounds of modern Morocco. Late at night, lying in a bath, listening to the output of three different nightclubs, each with their own blend of local music mixed with international pop hits, all in a constant struggle for dominance, with water running in and out of the ears. The resourcefulness of human endeavor in the Third World and its contrast with the luxuries and carefree wastefulness of the developed world provided the foundation for the album. This is the music of resistance against the constant war being waged by the powerful elite in rich nations against the poor. When Bush says "you're either with us or you're against us" Ayers replies "There is no separation. Social divides are socially constructed. A forgotten branch of the avant-garde once suggested that art can direct thought along new lines and enable us to generate more positive patterns of social behavior."

Various Artists "You Know How We Do" Album Review

I waited for this for five years
Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

PETS GO!!!!
Anyone who doesn't have a taste for the absurd will hate this. How does one go about describing the salacious sound of DAT Politics? Imagine the following: Take a CD of self-affirming children's songs, scratch the back with a razor blade to ensure maximal skipping, then speed it up and play it simultaneously with fuzzed-out hardcore electronica beats. Think Four Tet on ether in Las Vegas doing Unicorns covers. Now, you should have an idea of what's in store. (The band self-describes themselves as "Laptoppianists" on one track; this is another particularly apt description.)

DAT Politics is by far my favorite deconstructionist musique concrete pop group, occupying a small subgenre alongside glitch masters like Chicks on Speed, Max Tundra, Blechdom/Blectum, and kid606. Anyone who likes any of the previous will love this with a passion.

(sidenote: the reviewer who said this sounds like Aphex Twin has no idea what s/he's talking about.)

Soothing Psychotic Barks
I have been listening to Hex for almost 2 years now, and I've never gotten sick of it. The sounds that Bark Psychosis create were something new back then...and as my tastes have changed I've stuck with Psychosis Barking's more steadily than almost everything else in my collection. I have been short of cash for a long time, but once I got my finances in order I ordered a Bark album (I hadn't realized they had made more)...this album shows that the Barking Craziness has been no fluke. This is an expansion of their sounds, but not diluted, not refined, just a widening of an already grand vision. I love this. Like Mogwai except more inventive, like the best of Low except with a wider palatte, the most sublime of electronic acts. It's the 90's, but its palatable. Beside their pure mastery of tone, mood and texture, their greatest feat is their play of structure. Imagine Tool, except they love your ears, they want to express their angst by creating a world you want to live in and never leave. Yo La Tengo meets Bladerunner. It is an emotional experience. Whatever it is, ambient, postrock, I never tire of it. I'm going to get my hands on everything else they've done as soon as possible!

Mouse on Mars "Radical Connector" Album Review

Not My MoM
Sorry, but I've been a MoM fan for over ten years now, faithfully absorbing every hint of a nuance of a warble that this crew could fascinate me with, and their latest album, Radical Connector, IS BARELY LISTENABLE! I mean, who are these guys and what have they done with my MoM? I agree with the reviewer (Willinger) who considers this their worst work to date. I hear them on satellite radio from time to time -- only songs from this album -- and it's all I can do to sit there and shake my head in disgust. Don't get me wrong... MoM is, like, a top five all-time favorite of mine... Niun Niggung, for me, is the pinnacle of their amazing, original sound, and Glam is a thing of beauty in its own right. If Radical Connector is the only MoM you know, do yourself a favor and give those a few listens. Once they grow on you a bit, you'll know what these guys are all about (or at least so I thought).

It took me a very long time to break down and write this review, as I feel passionately about MoM's music. But alas, it's time for me to face the music and openly declare my dislike for Radical Connector -- well, the vast majority of it. I won't even waist the time to try to report on diamonds in that rough, even though they do exist... cubic zirconia at least.

Prodigy "The Fat of the Land" Album Review

One of industrial metals calling cards
Bursting onto the scene in 97 with this breakout album Prodigy in many ways took the baton of industrial metal from Trent Reznors NIN and ran with it. It really is inconceivable that without NIN paving the way for them Prodigy could of had anywhere near the impact they had on the mainstream. This album is killer stuff, taking a range of traditional hard rock/metal shadings and giving them a new set of clothes and really adding a serious dose of accessibility to the industrial metal pantheon.

Starting up with Smack My Bitch Up the band show themselves to be no record company darlings. I mean it's not the most subtle way of starting up an album is it? The album moves along from there to Breathe, one of the hits off this release and belting the listener up front with two of the best songs on the album is a clever bit of conventional track listing. And in many ways, music aside, this is a very traditional metal album. The whole shock rocker look of the band and the `hey look, I'm a borderline nutcase' shenanigans of the frontman fitted perfectly the mood of the mid to late 90's and the bands videos had just enough of a touch of the gothic to rope in some goth metallers for a bit of a boost to album sales.

Further down the playlist of the album we get a series of songs that by themselves aren't world beaters but they are solid and they hang together very well and bludgeon the listener. Except of course for Firestarter, a slow burn industrial nugget that uses it's hypnotic repetition to good effect and it's this catchiness that probably inspired the band to put this out as the lead single, paving the way for the albums climb up the charts in a number of territories.

Personally I would perhaps have finished the album with Firestarter as by the time Climbatise and Fuel My Fire set out their respective stalls the listener has pretty much heard it all. Not that they are bad tunes, but they aren't up to the same levels of frayed sanity as Firestarter.

Prodigy never managed to better this album and it still stands as one of the most commercially successful industrial metal crossovers ever and for good reason. The guitar textures and the relentless backing beats create a textured wall of sound that sucks the listener in. The shock rocker act seems fresh and about as real as it ever is and this is, without a doubt, pretty much the most humanly connective industrial metal album around, the band sending forth concise blasts rather than the more downbeat musical labyrinths of NIN.

This is a rather ambient affair. It is very abstract. Maybe more like some of Plaid's and Autechre's more non commercial things. A lot of spooky sounds for an hour. Maybe more like soundtrack music. It is relaxing. It's shocking to hear some guitar on "Blue Eyed Bitter." It is post-industrial, post-hiphop, and post-techno. Probably what the characters in the film Minority Report listen to. After listening to something mentally bankrupt like Royal City. this record is wonderful.

Far Superior Than Any Aphex Twin Album of the past 5 years....
Is it just me or isn't anyone as sick of Aphex Twin as I am? Thank God for Mr. 76ix. The whole drill 'n' bass aka hardcore glitch aka whatever-it's-called-this week scene has become painfully stale. Aphex Twin's recent Analord series has proven how self-indulgent, pompous and elitist some electronic musicians have become. I bought the first 4 Analord 12"s, listened to all of them once and were never listened to again. Sold 'em on Ebay and I cared less for the future releases. All I can think about Aphex now is how he pats himself on the back every time he releases the same single or album every 6 months, only to say, "Hey, look! I'm Richard James! See how cool I can punch that 808 or that rare Roland that only 6 people in the world have!" This is not meant to detract from Aphex's genius over the past 20 years but one must admit, he's too busy believing his own press...

Mr. 76ix enters stage left. A relative unknown until Skam records signed him up, released 200 unmarked promos known only as "The Hits of Mr. 76ix". The rest is history. "Hits" was not as revolutionary as Skam had hyped. However, 76ix (known as P. Wood) was definitely different. His driving, peak-hour sound, is at times harsh but never overwhelming. Even though the first "Hits" was a moderate success, his sound was still too unpolished and amateurish. I still did not understand Skam's hype over this guy. Only "Hits Part 2" gave me all the answers...

After frequent delays from the label, "Hits Part 2" gives the listener a more polished, more exact 76ix. Several cuts on the CD sound like an old-school 8-bit Nintendo game that decided to get wicked with Super Mario on the mic. He also shows us his versatility with "Streetbeatz", a hip-hop throwdown of "Prefuse-sian" levels. Track 8, "Another Planet" is both an homage and an immense improvment over any Analord single. The CD is not in-your-face like the original. Even "Paradise Unearned", one of the more aggresive tracks, has beauty and rhythm, thanks to a fun 70's riff plus some good beats a-la Kraftwerk or early LFO. The bottom line is if you want something other than Aphex or Autechre and you desire to try a new sound that you will dig? "Hits Part 2" is a great bet. This is one of the best electronic releases of 2005!

Pure & Majestic Music!!
Very original and i think unlike any of their other stuff. Very loose and organic music. The drums really pound away and we can't forget danny fleischer's intuitive and unique drumming; The guy drums unlike anyone else! Oh if he only got the credit he deserves! Rapid tom fills -smashing away at the crashes and coupled with Florian Frickes intense piano progressions ...the music is very majestic and seems to glorify the human spirit in every way. The last song, 20 minutes in length or so, is really where these guys Rock Out- Its definitely not 'NEW AGE' !!! These guys are pummeling their way to an ecstatic state!! And when I listen closely I could hear them singing and moaning and yelling and they even seem surprisingly swept away by the Power and Intensity of their own creation.. One of my favorite songs of all time is the last one, it has to be heard to be believed! Pure Music, mistakes and all!! The music touches a piece of my heart that no other music seems to get close too! I like putting on their last song REALLY LOUD and just sit in amazement at the beauty and power that the piece of music conveys, it builds, climaxes, builds and climaxes and leaves me with a momentous feeling of what the human spirit could achieve! Great melodies, great theme, great piece of music, period.

The Alpha Conspiracy "Cipher" Album Review

Two brilliant songs, but not much else.
I've been listening to Necros since 1998, long before he embarked on his professional career in the music industry. Even in those days, I knew he was going to make his mark sooner or later; despite his limited equipment, despite the primitive recording techniques he had to use, he still wrote at least half a dozen songs that could easily stand up to any mainstream dance hit and beat it at its own game. Necros had an ear for melody like nobody does anymore, and I still listen to his old songs to this very day. When I learned (a bit late) that he had finally opened his own label, Diffusion Records, and started releasing albums under the name The Alpha Conspiracy, it was like a dream come true. I immediately bought both his albums, of which Cipher is the first.

When I got the album, the first thing I noticed was that it contains "Martian Lovesong." This is one of Necros' old tracks, recorded anew especially for the album. It isn't one of my all-time favourite songs by him, and I didn't even like it that much when I had first heard it long ago, but this new version is astounding. It's clearly an electronic track, but it's impossible to categorize into any of the numerous styles of electronic music. Nothing else sounds like this: a dense swirl of mournful synthesizer notes, a flickering keyboard lead immediately followed by a harsh, distorted guitar counter-melody, and a powerful, varied rhythm that generally follows one of the standard techno patterns, but adds numerous fills and details in between the beats. These days, when it seems like electronica has just about given up on memorable hooks and riffs, this song sounds even more fresh and vital than when it was first recorded.

The other big standout is "Winter," a new track. Here, Necros uses his expanded recording opportunities to add vocals, which were previously lacking in his songs. Three songs on the album feature his voice, but "Winter" is by far the best. A distorted, airy vocal sample introduces the propulsive beat and the fast but serene melody, which break to make way for the singing. In the lyrics, a conversation with some girl is used as an occasion to meditate about the prospect of growing old and the fear of wasting one's life on useless pursuits. Necros puts his voice through numerous filters and produces it with a harsh distortion that is extremely reminiscent of Underworld's single "Pearls Girl." In fact, Necros' singing style is almost a perfect replica of Karl Hyde's vocals on that same track; you could fit Hyde's "White room, sun room, shadow room, night transmitting cars across the room" into "Winter" without breaking up the flow of the words. Even so, I think I actually like the imitation more than the original, due to the lovely music and the more comprehensible subject matter. If only it had been released as a single, I'm sure it could have gotten significant airplay and greatly increased The Alpha Conspiracy's following.

"Cross Product" also deserves some recognition. It's another vocal track, similar to "Winter" in style, with distorted vocals over a pretty melody. Here, though, the singing alternates between a dissonant, very heavily produced sound, and a softer, more vulnerable tone, which is a nice touch. After the second verse, there's a cool instrumental break with an acid-style synthesizer sound, before a return to the main keyboard line. Someone ought to play this in a club sometime and see what happens.

Unfortunately, that's about it. The other tracks sound like aimless sketches that were never developed into full-fledged songs. For example, "Ubik" sounds pretty good while it's playing, but doesn't linger in the mind afterwards. It's got some moody keyboards in the style of "Martian Lovesong," but without any distinct riffs. Apparently, Necros claims that this was supposed to be an attempt to merge garage rock with ambient techno. I get the second part, but not the first; he's probably referring to the prominent drums, but they are much more reminiscent of some formless trip-hop song than of the energetic, ramshackle feel of garage rock. Other songs are similar in nature; they aren't bad listening, but they don't stay in one's head for hours afterwards. Only "Glass" makes a sort of lasting impression, and that's not because it's a good song, but because it's much more stripped down than the rest of the album, and thus sounds different from the other tracks.

The production on this album is less elaborate than, say, on The Alpha Conspiracy's own second album, Aura. That's not a bad thing, but it has the effect of centering the listener's attention on melodies and songwriting, which are unfortunately under-developed on most of the songs. The gothic-techno arrangement of "Morphic," the third and final vocal track on the album, may have made for good dance-floor material, but unfortunately, the lyrics are ridiculous, containing such embarrassing lines as "you're in disguise / wait for days / it's a surprise" and "once is never / it multiplies / the darkness coming for you." They're placed up front in the song, too, so it's hard to get past them.

In the end, Cipher isn't the masterpiece I've been hoping for. Still, despite the weakness of most of the tracks, "Martian Lovesong" and "Winter" are the two best electronic tracks of this decade, which may make the album worth your while anyway. But if you haven't heard anything by Necros yet, I'd recommend Aura, which is a much stronger album overall.

At first I was worried that this was going to be another one of those cookie-cutter pop/electronica albums that seems to wash up on our shores from time to time. But I was floored by AM and the UV's subtle use of rhythms and synths, unique arrangements, and mesmerizing vocals.

Immediatetly danceable and yet lyrically accessible to lovers of modern pop as well as electronica acts like Portishead, it wooed me from the start. "Mysterin" is quite possibly my favorite track on the album, whose cold utterance of "cold fever sex" could remind one of Client without the rock elements, but instead manages to summon the sultry seduction of Goldfrapp.

The biggest sucess of Candy Thunder is that it surpasses one track wonders to enter the realm of producing atmosphere, which is hard to say in these days of uber-production with little effect. There's no wonder why their track "In This Kiss" was featured on FX's Dirt.

In my mind this album surpasses Goldfrapp's Supernature in that it incorporates elements from Black Cherry and Felt Mountain as well. It may be less experimental than Felt Mountain but it pulls off the chillout beats without any tracks that make you fall asleep like some other artists out there today.

If you love Portishead, Flunk, or Goldfrapp, then you owe it to yourself to check AM and the UV out.

Richard Pinhas "Tranzition" Album Review

There is More Rhythm
Tranzition is a wonderful mix of Richard Pinhas's beat works and ambient works that is all new material this past year (2004). He is still an innovator in the musical realms of electronic guitar cacophony- (pleasant ones :)!). With this release he flirts with some of his past musical senses in a way that is fresh.
If you were familiar with the French group Heldon, this record is not really like the styling(s) of that band (though versatile they were).
This record doesn't really compare to his 1990's solo and duet project albums either.
It is FRESH so check it out! Nice spin!

Moog synthesizer and percussion
This 1970 debut album by seminal German experimental group Popul Vuh opens on a somewhat pastoral note, complete with the organic sounds of birds chirping. Then a splash is heard, as if somebody jumped into a pond, which then fades into some comparatively cold and mechanical sounds on the moog synthesizer. It is as if another dimension (or distant future) is entered as the listener passes beneath the surface of the water, thus transporting the listener from the "sylvan glade" and the pond directly into what "sounds" to me like the vacuum of outer space. I am not entirely sure if that was Fricke's intention, but it certainly worked for me.

Affenstunde is an excellent and early example of electronica that just features the moog synthesizer along with some excellent percussion. I find the use of the moog at this early point especially impressive when you consider that this instrument cost a great deal of money - something on the order of buying a small house in 1970, or so I have been told.

The lineup on this album is very simple and consists of (the late) Florian Fricke on the moog synthesizer and Holger Trulzsch on percussion. The mixture of the cold synthesizer textures and the warm percussion is very interesting. The two pieces on this album are long and change very little over the course of the piece, with the Dream suite clocking in somewhere around 21+ minutes and Affenstunde at 18'30". In large part, the music cycles between spacey and somewhat creepy sounds on the moog synthesizer, and warmer passages dominated by various pieces of percussion (drums, bells etc). I found the contrast to be pretty interesting and at times, somewhat hypnotic. Based upon later albums by the band that I have listened to (Einsjager & Seibenjager, 1974), the electronic approach had been abandoned in favor of acoustic textures. Evidently, Fricke felt that he was not fulfilling his musical vision with the electronic approach and even went so far as to sell his "big" moog to Klaus Schulze, another excellent German electronic composer.

This reissued CD is pretty good and features good liner notes; some of which were written by Klaus Schulze himself. The meditative bonus track Train through Time (10'30"), is also very good and appears to have been recorded around the time of the Affenstunde sessions. This track features a similar mixture of percussion and synthesizer sounds.

All in all, this is an excellent and early recording of electronic music by a very important figure in the German experimental scene. This album is recommended along with other early works of experimental electronic music by German groups including Electronic Meditation (Tangerine Dream, 1970).

This guy from Newport Beach doesn't have a clue...I bought this about the time it came out which was near a decade ago and it remains one of the most treasured albums I own. You just don't come across stuff like this every day, month, even year.If you like electronic soundscapes and beats, snatch this one up if you can find it. Weatherall in top form here, giving you that late night, ultra dubbed and tripped out groove that he's so much appreciated for; scary yet serene referals throughout the flawless river of production. About the Band:
The San Francisco based ambient industrial / rhythmic noise project is the product of Chicago native Rob Wentz. Influenced by Peter Gabriel, Wentz also has toured with the industrial band Stromkern. The film and television soundtrack composer / engineer, who worked on notable DVDs including the Matrix Reloaded, the Matrix Revolutions, and Spiderman Special Edition is sometimes joined by Paul Karlik. Like Wentz's soundtrack scores, Monstrum Sepsis can be characterized by its emotional beats and blend of electronics and corresponding lack of vocals.

About the Album:
The Doors and Windows EP, the second major release from Monstrum Sepsis, is a follow-up to their successful Deep Sea Creatures album. The 1-hour long disc contains remixes from the first album by well known industrial acts including Android Lust, Displacer, Mimetic, and Haujobb. This disk also includes five new amazing tracks: walkout.live, painfully obvious, thermodynamics, push the red circle, and skipping stone that leave me sorry that Wentz actually doesn't spend more time focusing on making more Monstrum Sepsis material. All five of these tracks justify buying the EP in and of itself.

Some tracks I highly recommend include:
- Punch the Red Circle :: a very straightforward and energetic dance friendly track (it is traditional power noise);
- Doors & Windows (Displacer remix) :: typical of other Displacer remixes is really subdued and ominous; and
- Painfully Obvious :: a quiet though upbeat track (dark ambient).

Though my favorite offering on the album is the opening track walkout.live, which I hold has something of a flag bearer for what good electronic music should sound like. Walkout.live brings me back to some of my best electronic concert experiences and I suspect it will do the same for you as well!

Even though this was released in 2003, if you are a fan of science fiction like soundtracks and/or industrial music, I highly recommend you pick up this EP. Don't let this fly under your radar!

weaker legacy entry, but still amazing...
I have to say first, in response to an earlier review, "A Page of Life" is one of the very best joy electric songs to date. Definitely best of the album. this one's different.
first let me say that joy e is possibly my favorite band, they never cease to amaze and entertain me. this album is probably my least favorite of the legacy series. i think i find the synth arrangements a little less appealing although they are still very intricately put together. this one is darker than the past couple but i would say "ministry of archers" is more perfected "dark" album while "mannequin" has a little more trouble evoking a specific theme. not that, as all joy e albums, it doesn't work well as an album. just not quite as focused. other great tracks: "wolf in the bend", "i am a pioneer" and "song for all time".

Stochastic Theory "Soliloquy" Album Review

A strong, strong debut.
Okay, maybe I'm a smidge biased because they included a remix I did on the disc, but keep in mind I only did the remix because the song itself was so strong that I couldn't pass up the opportunity.I've probably listened to this album more than anyone short of the band, and I do have to say, it's a really solid, solid disc. The programming is nicely nuanced, and a refreshing change from a lot of the straight kick-drum-and-arpeggiator electropop formula that seems to be dominating the market these days. The vocals are strong, clear, in-tune (which sadly also seems to be unusual for a lot of music these days), and somewhat reminiscent of Information Society. Another nice feature of this disc is that the songwriting doesn't follow a strict formula either. There's no Depeche Mode/Erasure cloning going on here; this isn't an album of mopey brood-pop or chirpy bleep-pop. Instead you get original, creative songwriting that works as a cohesive whole.All in all, it's a great first disc for any band.

Weak, but...
This *Does* sound like a 'Combichrist'/'Icon of Coil' mix. If this is good or bad for you will determine how you will like this album. If you don't know who 'Combichrist' or 'Icon of Coil' is, don't worry. Andy LaPlegua also created these two bands, and while `Icon of Coil' deals with longer, deeper lyrics (I stress the `lyrics' part because the lyrics aren't exactly something to be desired); and Combichrist, with its choppy one-word songs and techno dance beats, `Panzer AG' has a bit of both. Now, onto this album...

`This is My Battlefield' has maybe three or four songs that are even worth listening to. Four out of fifteen. The rest of them are filler. The ones that are worth listening to, have somewhat deeper lyrics and one that you can slightly bang your head to, but even these good ones are weak. I'm not saying it's an album to avoid at all costs. Some people might like the tedious `God Eats God'. Some people might sit through `Chemical Breed'. But it all depends on whether or not you'd like to listen to a `Combichrist'-like album, and if the lyrics aren't of much importance. Most of the lyrics are anti-God, bow-to-the-machine that is the main theme for many Electro, Industrial bands. And if that's for you, then this is your album.

Just Great
I love this band. They are making accessible, listenable electronic music. The production is detailed and exciting, melodies are pleasing and not overly repetitive, and the drums do not beat you over the head. This album is better than its successor which, although it has its merits (the first two and a half minutes of "swamp" is incredible), is ultimately unsatisfying (the last minute of swamp with that bass guitar that ruins it).

Great stuff!
Snog has re-immerged for 2003 with another cynical attack on the corporate world of big business. Their newest album, "Beyond the Valley of the Proles" features eleven mellow electronic ''spaghetti western'' tracks similar to a mix of Lee Hazelwood and Leonard Cohen. Rich musical textures, clean acoustic guitars, and David Thrussel's deep bass vocals create a soothing atmosphere to calm the most restless spirit. Bent "The Everlasting Blink" Album Review

Hoping for more: more of the same...
After having loved their debut "Programmed to Love", I was somewhat dissapointed at Bent's "Everlasting Blink". While not a bad album, I found it to be more of the same. Still, had it not been for the self-indulgent 22-minute long closing track, which consisted of one LOOOOOONG and unnecessary 9-minute-some long chunk of nothing more than silence, this could have been a four-star album. I just simply lost interest in it a halfway through it.

Oscar "Oscar" Album Review

Breakneck genius
Oscar just died a few days ago, and I've been listening to his stuff and remembering how legendary he was, and for how long.
This is maybe his finest outing (of dozens of fine outings). Every track sparkles with mastery, and the listener is enveloped by truly great musical intelligence. Hearing tunes played this well just makes you feel holy. Night Train is a genuinely evergreen jazz album, perhaps even one of the best. The man swings like Tarzan on jungle crank and takes you on one wild ride after another. Canadians wail too, eh.
I grew up in Toronto in the '60s and '70s, Oscar's adopted hometown, and many was the night my folks would come home from the Town Tavern with big big smiles after yet another session with OP at the keys. Man I wish I could go back there and sit by their side!
Those who say he plays too fast miss the point (Segovia, when asked why he played so fast, smiled and said, "Because I can"). When you are this insanely musical, sometimes you have so many ideas that they just show up at 110 miles an hour. Tatum was even faster, and it's impossible to not call him one of the other handful of jazz piano geniuses.
After the speed arguments etc are done, we are left with astonishingly beautiful music. Peterson's long-long-time bassist Brown never lets him down, and Thigpen is equally tight on the skins. But this album is all about OP, a true master of perhaps the greatest musical instrument of all, in perhaps the most demanding musical idiom of them all.
If Oscar never lived, we would have had to invent him.

More positives than negatives
Is this the sole recording by Diagram of Suburban Chaos? DoSC is the working title of William Collin Snavely who, asides from the work heard here, also provides audio for commercial ventures as well, some of which can be heard on various web sites (one does have to pay the bills after all, yes?)

This CD is an excellent addition to any electronic music fan's collection, especially if one enjoys beats, as nearly every track contains a twisted percussion track. The music of STATUS NEGATIVES is not particularly groundbreaking in any way, but more so than many of his musical contemporaries, DoSC has managed to expertly harness the potentially sterile sounds of electronic instruments into something emotive and engaging.

The opening few tracks are good, but they're warm-ups for the more intriguing selections found later in the CD. The earliest highlight of the track order, the ominous ambience of "Meta II", hovers in the air like a ghost breathing into your ear. "Rooftop" ups the tempo a bit while sounding derivative of early Aphex Twin. "P-Fect" references contemporary R&B percussion filtered through glitchy electronica. The spacious "Fr-Ctred" opens to a hollow room occupied by the incessant hum of an idle machine while mysterious pounding noises echo from the roof above. The lengthy centerpiece of STATUS NEGATIVES, "W.A.A.C. (Dx)", announces itself with a bright keyboard melody and slow sweeping percussion, while short bursts of dialogue dart around the speakers like transmissions from a faraway signal.

Again, this is a fantastic CD and has stuck around longer in rotation than most music I've purchased. Here's hoping that Mr. Snavely will soon pool his works into another DoSC release.

Final Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Nobukazu Takemura "10th" Album Review

A Sound Mob
A twist on vocals, "10th" reverbs with what seems like Isaac Asimov's I-Robots humming to themselves. Takemura doesn't use real voices, he uses voice synthesizers for his vocals illusions and dog beats with toy instruments. The result is a sound mob of children's voices and choruses ranging from great to passable. My friends, who listened to the CD with me, tend to prefer the shorter pieces. For us, "Astral Beads" and "Cons" were the best tracks by far - definitely worth sampling. Many of the other songs dragged on a little too long, such as "Lost Treasure" and lost (pun intended) their originality quickly. If you are a DJ, this CD is probably very worthwhile for the cuts.

I'm a fan of Miss Kittin and had heard a couple of things from Fdh that I enjoyed. I figured this album couldn't miss. Unfortunately, I listed to the whole thing and I was bored. None of the songs really got my attention and I had to keeping checking the cd to make sure it wasn't the same song. It's not a horrible cd, but it won't rock your world.

On Family Guy (I think), they had a CD to help you sleep-- it was supposed to be "the sounds of nature" or something like that. When they played it- instead of hearing the leaves rustling in the wind, or the waves breaking in the ocean, you heard a grizzly bear attacking other animals, and other frightful sounds of nature.

This CD works A LOT better!

Remix album worth listening
I was doubtful about this remix album. Madredeus music is so specific that I was scared an electronic treatment would destroy its equilibrium and kill Theresa's voice. I was wrong, those remixes actually work out well. When reading the liner notes, comments from each remixers about Madredeus music and their remix, I was relieved to see they all worked with respect to the originals. Theresa's breathy voice remains the center of attention. The new production adds even some melancholy to the tracks, and might attract new listeners to the originals. "Haja o que houver" 'Lux mix' accentuates the melancholy and longing of the original with a floating and aerial electronic loops background. "Vem" gets a majestic string mix by Alpha. The strings and percussion climb hand in hand in intensity and passion with the vocals. Sunday Best version of "Ecos na catedral" is ethereal and contemplative. Banzai Republic washes out the vocals in a musical sea wave turning "O mar" into a haunting mermaid song. Bushemi proves with the "O Paraiso" 'afro mix' that Madredeus music can contain beats without turning into a dance track. Theresa's voice seems to float above the light orchestration."O sonho" keeps the trademark guitar sound in Ralf Myerz and Jack Herren Band version, but they push the vocals in the background to add to the atmospheric, dreamy feeling. Afterlife remix of "A lira" keeps the trademark cords and brings pulse to the song with a conga beat while the voice remains pure. Dusted keeps most the original elements of "Andorinha da primavera" and throws some quiet beats and spacy electronic loops in. The song becomes a waltzing lullaby. Telepopmusic incorporate perfectly Madredeus natural elegance into their electronic musical world. Their remix of "Oxala" is elegant, twisted and nonchalant. "Ao longe o mar" receives a chill out treatment from Astro who preserves the haunting, contemplative feeling of the original, and is successful in marrying tradition and modernity as he attempted to. David Bridie and Christian Scallan remix of "Ainda" is extremely interesting. They created an instrumental with sounds recorded in Mississippi bayou and "cut into rhythmic grabs" (in their own words) and married it with Theresa's vocals. The result is stunning. Craig Armstrong chose "Anseio". With the somber beats he added, the track made me think about Massive Attack. The vocals sound even more tragic, passionate and luminous at the same time. Manitoba added tribal drums and percussion to "Guitarra" and its typical guitar motifs but took out the vocals. I think the right word to describe this mix is 'tropical'.If you're a fan, don't be afraid to purchase this album. You will not find your favorite song in a badly adjusted disguise. You might discover new elements in Madredeus music. If you do not know them yet, it is not a bad way to start, but I recommend you to purchase "Antologia" or any of their previous studio albums to be able to compare to the originals. You will succumb quickly to the Portuguese charm too.

Delerium "Archives" Album Review

Great! But far more instrumental and experimental than their later more mainstream offerings.
I would give five stars to both Delerium's earlier and later works. While their later works accompanied by all of the sugar-coated female vocals would fit into the nightclubs of today, I find that these earlier recordings hark back to the underground sounds of the 80s. The feel of most of the tracks on both CDs remind me of a combination of Dead Can Dance, and the experimental electronics of Throbbing Gristle, Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel (aka Foetus Inc, aka Jim Thirlwell), and early Cabaret Voltaire (if you removed Stephen Mallinder's vocals and just left Richard H Kirk to play with his electronics). Whether you call that "dark" or "ambient" or "gothic", or whether you call it more "experimental" in nature... I like it! But if you are expecting these "Archives" to be similar to their later works with all of the guest female vocals, this may not appeal as much to you due to the lack of vocals and sparser arrangements of melodies.

Challenging to the ears as well as the intellect. Thaemlitz's organized noise fusion carries not only sense data, but aslo carries a thinking man's flame. His pieces breaks apart the invisible boundaries that categorizes and excludes familiarity. Definately a hot piece to sit around and discuss the polemics of strategems for political organized sounds. Terre Thaemlitz "Replicas Rubato" Album Review

Highly reccomended!
I happened to spot this disc in a funky record store with a handwritten note that it was highly reccomended. This was slotted with Gary Numans discs, and being a big Numan fan, I purchased it. Gary had already done a piano-ony version of "Down in the Park", but this builds upon and expands on that. It's a very full disc and the song selections are among my favorites (Storm Troopers in Drag, Down in the Park, Slowcar to China, Praying to the Aliens). This disc really brings the melodies to the surface but Terre also brings in some interpetation. Quite brilliant, when you consider the bulk of Gary's work is synthetic/electric by nature, hearing them in a stark setting of a piano-onl setting gives you a very different perspective on Gary's work that's both disquieting and familiar at the same time. I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend this to any real Numan fan, and I think it holds up as a wonderful CD of piano music for someone totally unfamiliar with Gary Numan!

A Gem
I bought this after hearing my dog eats beats late one night and was startled at its beauty. This album is a real find. One of my all-time favourite albums no matter the genre. Despite those who have reviewed before I, 14-0-0 is my least favourite. The notwist 'neon golden' is also a great addition.

Craig Armstrong "As if to Nothing" Album Review

Profound
The album is somewhat of a survey in styles/sounds, but it is mixed perfectly. I love it, perfect somber beautiful emotional music that blends electronica with interesting heartfelt lyrics performed by excellent singers and poets. This album is worth a listen for anyone wanting to branch out a bit from top 40 music into something more complex and introspective.

Another collaboration of contemporary-classical composer Craig Armstrong. This time he joins forces with Lemonhead´s lead singer Evan Dando. This is a pre-release promotional video of the album "As If to Nothing", but that doesn´t take of its credits. It´s emotional, even thought there isn´t a single live soul in it.
