Rick Sammon’s 24×7 Photo Buffet – A Photographers Companion App

Shriya and I are into photography and we just bought our first DSLR – Canon Rebel T1i recently. In fact, we blog about the photography tips we learn and camera deals we come across in our new Camera blog – Camerani.com.

Naturally, I listen to a lot of photography podcasts and Rick Sammon’s Digital Photo Experience is one of them. And I came to know that Rick has released an iPhone as well.

Here is a quick review of this excellent Rick Sammon’s 24×7 Photo Buffet iPhone app.

Rick has over 30+ years of professional experience and he has jam packed this little app with photography advice, tips and techniques he has collected over years.

The app is meant to be a reference on the go while you are out shooting as well as a searchable guide to find a quick fix for a tricky photographic situation.

The app has been organized into 5 major sections

Seeing – Focuses on showing how to see a picture before you snap the shot. Talks about composition, framing and lighting.
Making – Find out how to make a great picture with tips on exposure, color balance, flash, filters.
Editing – Tips for your digital darkroom showing how to make your pictures pop by tweaking white balance, levels, saturation and contrast and selectively controlling sharpness.
Tips – Search Rick’s tip from A-Z with advice on everything from Aerial shooting to panoramas.
Help – Powerful search function to find anything in the app quickly with link to Digital Photo Experience website with extra content.

If you are a photography enthusiast like us and wonder what f-stop or ISO or shutter speed is right for a situation where your kid is running around or to take pictures in low light without blur or to take a close up of a spring wildflower, etc, then having an app like this in your pocket will make it so much easier.

In fact, Rick has included a section for taking pictures with your iPhone. Oh and you want to learn about HDR, Rick has you covered.

Rick Sammon’s 24×7 Photo Buffet is an excellent resource for a photography enthusiast and with already over 100MB of content in the app and with new additions coming from time to time, I think it will be a $4.99 well spent on your passion.

With this app, I am looking forward to going out more with my camera knowing I have all the help I need right in my pocket to get my creative juice flowing.

What’s Your Favorite Location App?

There is no dearth of Location services apps in the App Store these days. With SXSW Interactive that just took place, the major location based players got some serious exposure but there really isn’t a clear winner amongst them yet.

Services like FourSquare, Gowalla, Loopt are all competing for market share in this area.

I just noticed on TechCrunch how Apple is also garnering a lot of attention to these services. On iTunes these apps have gotten their own area in New & Noteworthy. On the iPhone, they are featured in the top 5 spots (or more) in the What’s Hot section.

Here are the apps thats are getting a lot of attention from Apple

FourSquare
Gowalla
Loopt
Whrrl 3
MyTown

Getting featured by Apple is huge for any iPhone app developer as that increase the number of people downloading the app in an insane way as a lot of good apps get buried in the 100,000+ apps in the App Store.

Personally, I am yet to get hooked on to any location based apps. As much as I am open on the Internet and social media, I still hesitate to advertise my whereabouts every day.

Very Creative Video On Future of Publishing

Quick Tip: Bulk Move Photos With Dropbox Without USB Cable

I was recently asked by a reader if there was an iPhone app that lets us email 30+ photos at a time. I couldn’t think of one but i shared this tip i had written earlier – How to Attach Multiple Photos to Email?

Now, how about you were on a trip and you forgot to pack your USB cable and you need to move a whole lot of pictures to your computer?

You can do it easily with the free Dropbox iPhone app.

Create a new Dropbox account if you don’t have one
Install the free Dropbox app\
Browse to the Dropbox folder you want to upload pictures to
Login and click on the Camera logo
Choose existing photo or video
Choose the pictures or videos you want to upload

That’s it. You will see all your photos or videos in your computer as long as you have a 3G or WiFi connection.

Quick Tip: How to Prevent iPhone App Deletion?

I was just listening to Today in iPhone podcast, which I highly recommend, and came across a listener question and answers to one I have been asked many times as well.

How to prevent iPhone app deletion or how to protect iPhone app from being deleted?

You might have a little one or let your iPhone be used by someone else only to find some apps have been deleted accidentally or intentionally. This sucks as most of the time you might also lose the data associated with the app as well.

If you have a jailbroken iPhone, this can be done by one of several ways through jailbreak apps that you can download via Cydia or Rock app.

Lockdown – Go to Settings –> Lockdown app deletion. You won’t be able to delete apps even though they wiggle.

Categories – Any app you put in a Category folder can’t be deleted from the Springboard. You have go to the Categories app to delete the app from the folder or your iPhone.
SpringLocker – Lets you toggle to move your iPhone apps but doesn’t let you delete app as long as you have this turned on via Settings.
Supreme Preferences – If you have Winterboard app installed, this app adds a lot of extra preference options including the one to prevent app deletion.

As you can see you can use any one of these jailbreak iPhone apps to prevent accidental app deletion by your kid or anyone playing around with your phone.

if you use Categories a lot, you already have protected your apps unknowingly.

Launch Google Mobile App.
Say the words ‘Post buzz’ followed by the text you want to post.
It will launch Google Buzz mobile page with the text you said.

This is a quick way to post Google Buzz updates with just your voice.

Stream Live Video With Twitter Conversations

Have you ever wanted to broadcast live on Twitter while having a conversation via Twitter replies? There is an app for that.

There are many live video streaming apps for iPhone 3G and 3GS like Qik, Knocking Live, etc. But, there is an important piece missing in these apps. A conversation piece while broadcasting.

Lynda.com iPhone app provides free training material access to non-members. It’s even more functional for Lynda.com members.

You can log in to your Lynda.com account and access videos and start learning from your iPhone. Once logged in, you’ll see the most recent video you watched no matter if you watched it on your iPhone or on your computer. You can pick up where you left off.

Even if you are not a member, there are a hundreds of free content in the app worth checking out.
