Take Photos From Any Open iPhone App With Snappy

Never miss a chance to take a quick picture of something anymore because you were using another app.

This app is for jailbroken iPhone only.

Snappy is a new iPhone app available in Cydia for $1.99. Snappy lets you take photos even from within any open iPhone app. It even opens from the lock screen instantly.

To activate the Camera app from any screen, all you have to do is to tap and hold the top status bar where the AT&T carrier (or any other) logo to launch Camera and you are ready to instantly start taking pictures.

It beats the traditional way of closing an app and opening an app which probably takes precious 5-6 seconds when you might lose a photo opportunity.

Desert Island Apps Series At Just Another iPhone Blog

Patrick is a good friend of mine and I have long been a fan of his sites Just Another Mobile Monday and Just Another Phone Blog.

If there is one other iPhone blog you should read besides Top iPhone Resource, it has to be Just Another iPhone Blog. All kidding aside, it really is an excellent blog and a real inspiration for my efforts here.

Patrick recently started an interesting series called Desert island Apps.

It is based on a long-running BBC show called Desert Island Discs. The premise is simple – a guest is invited to choose 8 musical pieces they would take with them if they were stranded on an island.

With Desert Island Apps, a guest is invited to come up with a list of apps that you would take with you if you were stranded in an island.

And Patrick honored me by asking me to be a guest in this week’s Desert Island Apps series..

Lexic: The Most Beautiful iPhone Word Game Ever

I like word games and I used to play Scrabble on Yahoo games for hours years back. I haven’t checked out as many word games in iPhone though.

But, I think I am going to rekindle that old love for word games with this iPhone app I just came across.

Lexic by Kiefer Brothers is an incredibly beautiful iPhone app. The interface reeks of elegance and eye catching animations and pleasing sounds. It really is the most beautiful iPhone word game. Ever.

But, it does not stop at just being an attractive app. It is actually 4 word game modes packed into 1 app.

Quest – You will form words with the tiles in front of you. As you play you will unlock game feats, tile sets etc. There will be bomb tiles, virus tiles, lock tiles and letter switch tiles that can be obstructive to collecting gold tiles and points.
Cascade – This is a fun and fast paced game. You try to beat the clock and find words in a cascading stream of letters.
Blackout – This is another cool mode where the words you form explode and it doesn’t get filled with more letter tiles. You can use the accelerometer to slide tiles left and right and craft words.
Stasis: The tiles always remain in place and you can play infinite or to a clock and try to find as many words as possible.

The game itself has such good tactile feel and I am gushing with words of praise for it. It even has a beautiful tutorial for the game. The more you play you will start finding hidden secrets like achievements, themes and abilities that makes it even more interesting.

Lexic definitely sets an example of what a paid iPhone app should be.

If you want a great iPhone word game app, make Lexic your choice and you will not regret it.

PandoraBox – Find iPhone Apps on Sale

If you follow us on Twitter, you might wonder how we find all the wonderful sale for cool iPhone & iPod Touch apps.

Today, I am going to let out my secret weapon. Well, it’s not such a secret. In fact, there are more than 1 such app but this is what I have stuck to recent days.

PandoraBox is an iPhone app that tracks iPhone apps on sale.

With more than 100,000 apps in the App Store and everyday dozens of these apps either go on sale by 20, 30, 70, 80 percent on sale or even sometimes goes FREE for a limited time.

A smart iPhoner would make use of such sales and grab the iPhone apps on a nice deal.

An app like Pandora Box makes that such an easy task. You can see the apps that are on sale that are updated several times a day. You can see the description of apps that are on sale or free.

You can also create your own list of favorite apps and track apps you want to find on sale.

There are a few sneaky developers who keep throwing their app on sale and removing it flooding these lists. PandoraBox has an answer to that. You can block certyain authors you don’t care about seeing in the list.

With the Thanksgiving holidays coming up in the US, there is going to be a ton of sales with some nice apps.

Free Barcode Scanner iPhone App – ShopSavvy

You have probably heard of the paid iPhone app, RedLaser, that has been in the top 10 paid apps list for a while.

But, there is an app that could be called the original barcode scanner for mobile phones that was very popular with Android – ShopSavvy.

ShopSavvy lets you point the red laser like line on a barcode. It uses the iPhone’s camera to scan the bar code and look up the product online. It shows a picture of the product and shows their online prices.

Plus, it uses your location via GPS to show the local stores that carry the product with their prices.

Now, you have a powerful product scanner while you are out shopping to instantly see if you are paying the right price. A deal hunter’s dream weapon.

ShopSavvy lets you save products you look up so you can refer to them later. It also has another cool feature – setup Price Alert.

I tried scanning a book I had near me and it instantly popped up in ShopSavvy as you can see in the screenshots.

Top 10 Mobile Applications for 2012

Yes, it’s the dreaded year 2012 9atleast for some) in the news today and it’s not about the movie.

Gartner, the research firm has just released a list of top 10 mobile applications for the year 2012.

Gartner listed applications based on their impact on consumers and industry players, considering revenue, loyalty, business model, consumer value and estimated market penetration.

The top 10 consumer mobile applications for 2012 include:

Money Transfer
Location based services
Mobile search
Mobile browsing
Mobile health monitoring
Mobile payment
Near Field Communication services
Mobile advertising
Mobile instant messaging
Mobile music

If you were looking for something revolutionary, then you are probably feeling like how I feel – ‘meh’.

Yes, it’s true we are just getting started with some of these technologies (as Gartner points out) which are already available to iPhone users.

But, there is definitely a glaring omission – Augmented Reality. iPhone users have already started seeing AR apps that are totally revolutionary and I think it will be a big player by 2012.

Gartner’s list is not just for existing smartphone platforms but I believe they are addressing the general mobile phone market which is still ways behind the curve.

200 Situps iPhone App Review

Here is another fitness related iPhone app following our 100 Pushups iPhone app.

if you are into strengthening your core with crunches, 200 Situps iPhone app is definitely going to interest you.

Just like the 100 Pushups app, 200 Situps just got a nice UI redesign and I love it. It sports an pleasing-to-the-eye blue colors all over.

200 Situps iPhone App

200 Situps is a 6-week core strengthening workout regimen. All you need is about 30 minutes a week to get to your goal of doing 200 consecutive crunches.

Here’s how you’d use it:

You’d start by tapping the Today’s Programme button. You will be presented with the first rep you are going to do. The top of the screen also shows you the reps ahead. Once you are done with the first rep, tap the button and the rest timer will start. It will again beep when there is 3 seconds left for your next rep and so on.

If you are ready anytime in between, you just shake your iPhone to start the next rep.

And you can always do as many as you can in the final rep and log it.

Once you are done with your reps, you can go back to the main screen and look at the log graph of your progress.

Plus, the Setup screen has a few options. You can reset to a particular day to start over if you are feeling like you are rushing or for any other reason.

Also, if you were doing reps without your iPhone you can also fill the log with the entries. Plus, the app has Facebook and Twitter integration if you are sharing this with your friends to keep yourself motivated.

The $1.99 I spent on this app is definitely well worth it. In fact, I went ahead and bought their 100 Pushups app as well and considering looking at the 200 Squats program as well.

Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies iPhone App

Premium IM iPhone App Agile Messenger On Sale For $1.99

Agile Messenger is my choice iPhone app for instant messaging. It is feature packed and Push notifications works like a charm.

Although it is an excellent IM program, I have a hard time when it comes to recommending it to my friends and readers as the original price for it is $9.99.

But, I have some good news. Agile Messenger is on sale for an incredible price of $1.99 until November 30th. So, if you have been wanting a good IM app for your iPhone, this is the one app you want.

Of course, being a iPhone app reviewer, I never settle for one app for any particular job. So, if you use another good IM app, sound off in the comments and I will take it up for review soon.

Wifi & Youtube Fix for iPhone 3.1.2 Jailbreak Issues

There have been many reports of wifi and push notofication issues after the iPhone 3.1.2 jailbreak with blackra1n and unlock with blacksn0w.

Plus, there has also been issues with Youtube and GPS after the 3.1.2 jailbreak.

But, we are in luck as iPhoneil has released a ‘Push Fix & Youtube’ and is now available in Cydia.

Disable Wifi before you start
Just add the iPhoneil repository to your Cydia sources – http://cydia.iphoneil.net. Search for Push Fix & Youtube and install it.
Now, reboot your iPhone and enable WiFi.
Reboot your iPhone again

Looks like this patch fixes the wifi & Youtube issues after the jailbreak/unlock with blackra1n & blacksn0w.
