To be able to monitor forces acting on objects is important for a lot of different applications. In this case the object is a big steel disc and the forces to be monitored are those acting on the rim of the disc.

This is done with strain gauges that register changes in the internal strainfield. This is then run through a system model that outputs the equivalent force for that strainfield. The system model is created through a static system identification consisting of a series of test pushes on the rim of the disc. This method of system identification has a series of problem mainly that it is time consuming.

The thesis presents a proof-of-concept of a dynamic system identification method. Instead of pressure applied while stationary the pressure is applied by rotating the disc against another smaller steel disc and performing the system identification on this continuous data.

An algorithm to use the data is tested in simulation and the results are analyzed and proven successful. Then a experiment is performed, recording data and running the algorithm. The dynamic system identification is shown to give almost equal results to the static one. The difference can be accounted for as problems with the force measuring or that the dynamic system identification is actually more accurate than the static one.

The algorithm is concluded to work and give an advantage over the old algorithm in form of the time it takes to perform it. It has a possibility to be more accurate and also to be able to identify forces in more directions than straight into the disc.
Source: KTH
Author: Wester, Stefan

In object oriented programming, a Call Graph represents the calling relationships between the program’s methods. To be more precise, a Call Graph is a rooted directed graph where each node of the graph represents a method and each edge (u, v) represents a method call from method u to method v.

Focus of this thesis is on building a framework for Call Graph construction algorithms which can be used in program analysis. Our framework is able to be initialized by different front-ends and constructs various Call Graph algorithms. Here, we instantiate framework with two bytecode readers (ASM and Soot) as front-ends and implement three Call Graph construction algorithms (CHA, RTA and CTA).

At first, we used two above mentioned bytecode readers to read the bytecode of a specific Java program, then we found reachable methods for each invoked method; meanwhile we kept obtained details on our own data structures. Creating data structures for storing required information about Classes, Methods, Fields and Statements, gives us a great opportunity to implement an independent framework for applying well known Call Graph algorithms.

As a result of these data structures, Call Graph construction will not depend on bytecode readers; since, whenever we read the bytecode of a program, we accumulate all necessary points in pre-defined data structures and implement our Call Graphs based on this accumulated data.

Finally, the result is a framework for different Call Graph construction algorithms which is the goal of this thesis. We tested and evaluated the algorithms with a variety of programs as the benchmark and compared the bytecode readers besides the three Call Graph algorithms in different aspects.
There are great possibilities to cut lead time in product development process by automation of the routine work. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is often used to test product properties virtually. But the process of setting up FEA is manual most of the times and not properly structured.

Problem:
Transportation companies face an increase of emissions due to the increased use of transportation systems. The environment and society are being affected by emissions and solutions need to be created in order to stop the acceleration of harmful release to the planet. Transportation industries have to be sustainable.

Research Questions:
How can the introduction of new activities within CSR help a company become sustainable by reducing its ecological footprint? Which CSR activities could be adopted by a company so as to become sustainable by improving social conditions?

se:
The purpose of this study is to discuss and analyze how innovation in CSR activities, related to environment and society, can lead a company to be sustainable by reducing its ecological footprint.

Methods:
A qualitative method of approach was used for this research work, with regards to primary data; interviews (telephone interview and email correspondence) were used. Secondary data sources were literature, articles, journals and internet sources from the university data bases.

Conclusion:
Through CSR activities companies can be sustainable, since they are linking the company into responsible actions, taking it further, new thinking can take these actions into another level.

Finding new solutions to the arising environmental problems can result in decreasing ecological footprint. Companies do not have time to wait for solutions coming to them, they have to approach and motivate innovation in their company and constantly try new projects in order to be sustainable.

The main purpose of this thesis is to develop a 3D beam element in order to model wind turbine wings made of composite materials.

The proposed element is partly based on the formulation of the classical beam element of constant cross-section without shear deformation (Euler-Bernoulli) and including Saint-Venant torsional effects for isotropic materials, similarly to the one presented in Batoz & Dhatt. The main novelty consists in the addition of the coupling between axial and bending with torsional effects that may arise when using composite materials.

PreComp, a free access code developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to provide structural properties for composite blades, is used to obtain the section properties for the beam element. Its performance is assessed, showing its inaccuracy especially when calculating torsional related constants when webs are present in the cross-section.

Shell models of constant cross-section cantilever blades are developed to assess the performance of the beam elements, including or not coupling terms. Natural frequencies and displacements under static loads are compared for different study cases of increasing complexity.

For fiber-reinforced materials, elements with coupling terms show good agreement with the shell model, especially for the dynamic problem. Elements without coupling terms are unable to capture the dynamic behavior, as these terms seem to have a higher effect on the results when compared to the static case (especially the FT term).
Source: KTH
Author: De Frias Lopez, Ricardo

A management platform is an integral part of any modern computer network. Its role in any kind of network (research or commercial) is undeniable. By using the management solution, the operators of the network monitor, troubleshoot and manage the network from a centralized location.

MIUN IPTV test bed is expanding in the sense that it is covering a greater geographical area and more researchers are using the network in order to carry out their experiments. In this project, an attempt will be made to develop a management platform for the IPTV network.

The aim of this research is to check whether the Taylor rule in its simple linear form can be viewed as an appropriate description of the monetary policy pursued by Norway’s central bank – Norges Bank, and whether this rule can be used for forecasting purposes.

Not only does this research focus on the original Taylor rule, but it also deals with its extended version designed for small open economies such as Norway. A conclusion about whether regressions can produce reliable coefficient estimates is drawn on the basis of time series’ properties tests and cointegration tests. The performance of the simple-form Taylor equation is compared to its alternative forms through forecasting exercises.

The study has shown that the extended version of the Taylor rule with interest rate smoothing and augmented with the real exchange rate, the policy rate of the EU and oil prices can be viewed as a close approximation of Norges Bank’s monetary policy and can be used for forecasting purposes.
Source: Uppsala University
Author: Balabay, Oksana

Sustainable design and engineering is in great demand in cities all over the world. As a result, design and engineering consultancies have to continue finding ways to capitalize on sustainable developments responsibly.

Implementing a strategy to reduce the friction between the human-ecology and economic imperatives is a major step. Amongst Ramboll’s Nordic sustainable perspectives, the Swedish perspective can be innovative enough to reduce this friction that can stand in the way of the comprehensive sustainable project mission, which is profitable and value-added.

But can this comprehensive and holistic Nordic approach, intended to link stakeholders into a positive project dynamic be applied effectively enough under unique country-specific contexts? A strategy that incorporates a framework to understand and value the intangibilities of sustainability and fine-tuned for the different conditions and unique contexts of where projects are built can help by creating positive synergies between stakeholders.

The friction between the human-ecology and economic imperatives exists and we draw upon previous research and sustainable development projects in Sweden and Istanbul, Turkey, to determine how this friction prevents projects from being comprehensively sustainable.

Exploring beyond the Swedish sustainable perspective can help rationalize contextual barriers during the pre-construction stages of the project life cycle. And, with the right strategy, the project coalition can design and engineer with confidence knowing that the intangibilities of sustainability are valued and used by each stakeholder to optimize their profitability responsibly.

NetInf and CCN are two Information-Centric Network approaches which are constructed to solve limitations of today’s Internet that was developed in the 60’s. Today’s Internet requires that datum is referred by its location. This is not something the end-user is interested in, the user is only interested in securely finding the information that searched for.

These approaches decouple location from data and also aim on embedding security into the information itself and to provide caching functionality directly in networks.

The main goal of this work was to show the potential advantages of using the Information-Centric approaches by implementing them into the version control system Subversion and performing experimental evaluations.

A Subversion adaptation has successfully been developed which supports both OpenNetInf and CCNx. With a 1Mbit/s connection to the Subversion server evaluation results show that, compared to the original implementation, checkouts can be performed 13(!) times faster using OpenNetInf and 2.3 times faster using CCNx.

This work also presents motivation for future work in the area of Information-Centric Networks and has contributed with a working application which exploits advantages of these approaches.

Increasingly growing consumption of natural gas all around the world requires development of new transporting equipment and optimization of existing pipelines and gas pumping facilities. As a special case, Russian gas pumping system has the longest pipes with large diameter, which carry great amounts of natural gas.

So, as reconstruction and modernization needs large investments, a need of more effective and low cost tool appeared. As a result diagnostics became the most wide-spread method for lifecycle assessment, and lifecycle extension for gas pumping units and pipelines. One of the most effective method for diagnostics of gas pumping units is parametric diagnostics. It is based on evaluation of measurement of several termo-gas dynamic parameters of gas pumping units, such as pressures, temperatures and rotational speed of turbines and compressors.

In my work I developed and examined a special case of parametric diagnostics – methodic for evaluation of technical state and output parameters for gas pumping unit “Ural-16”. My work contains detailed analysis of various defects, classified by different GPU’s systems. The results of this analysis are later used in development of the methodic for calculation of output parameters for gas pumping unit.

GPU is an extremely complex object for diagnostics. Around 200 combinations of Gas Turbine engines with centrifugal superchargers, different operational conditions and other aspects require development of separate methodic almost for each gas pumping unit type.Development of each methodic is a complex work which requires gathering of all possible parametric and statistical data for the examined gas pumping unit. Also parameters of compressed gas are measured.

Thus as a result a number of equations are formed which finally allow to calculate such parameters as efficiency, fuel gas consumption and technical state coefficient which couldn’t be measured directly by existing measuring equipment installed on the gas compressor station.
Source: KTH
Author: Angalev, Mikhail

In the global business environment, outsourcing and offshore outsourcing are strategies for firms to handle the increasing competition in their specific market segments by utilizing the capabilities of other firms in order to gain competitive advantages.

China has become an important player on the global market and is an attractive country for Western firms’ offshore outsourcing initiatives. Even though outsourcing and offshore outsourcing have been discussed in the literature for a long period of time, firms are still not able to reach and fulfill their strategic goals and many offshore outsourcing projects fail.

The purpose of this study is to deepen the existing literature regarding offshore outsourcing to China by considering the Chinese suppliers’ perspective on competitive priorities, which are the priorities that firms organize the production by, in order to understand how the buying firms can be more successful in the Chinese context and reach their strategic goals.
Source: KTH
Author: Andersson, Dan | Bernhardsson, Martin

This research has been emphasized on integration of plants in skyscraper design which play a vital role for the energy conservation by the building as well as improving the living quality into these vertical cities. Throughout the work it has been studied to establish the necessity of planting to incorporate into skyscrapers, for the well being of our economy, society and the environment.

The rules and regulations in various countries have been studied. The provisions of integrate plants into skyscraper includes the four possible options like, Green roof, Green wall, Biofilter and Indoor potting plants which can be incorporate into the design. Benefits and impacts have been studied in terms of energy savings and indoor environmental qualities. For example green roof can reduce 50% of cooling load; green wall can reduce 10 degree centigrade indoor temperature, where as biofilter and indoor plants purifies indoor air by 50% to 60%.

Available technologies for green installments, like complete, modular and vegetated blanket system for green roof; modular, freestanding and cable-rope system for green wall; active and passive system for biofilter and different types of indoor plants have been addressed here along with their examples and case studies. At the end the recommendation shows that integration of plants into skyscrapers can change the micro and macro environment, climate, can restore the ecology and benefited to the economy. Results are the noticeable decrease in urban heat island, rapid reduction of energy consumption and cost, refreshing air for a healthy environment.

Nowadays, timber is widely used in construction industry thanks to its availability and good properties. The use of solid (sawn) timber is not always proper since it is only available up to certain dimensions. Therefore, the so-called Engineered Wood Products (EWPs) have been introduced tocope with the different design needs of structures.

The Glued laminated Timber (glulam) is a type of EWPs that consists of smallsections of timber laminates glued together to form beams and columns. Glulam can be manufactured in almost any size and shape; it can also be tapered or notched. However, notching a beam at its end leads to a stress concentration at the re-entrantcorner of the notch due to the sudden change in the notched beam’s cross section. The concentration of shear and tensile stresses perpendicular to the grain can lead to a catastrophic brittle failure caused by the crack propagation from the notch corner.

Crack opening due to tensile stresses perpendicular to grain is the most common failure at the notch corner and it is always taken into design consideration. However, shear component is usually exists and must be also considered in design to guarantee the safety of the structure. Currently, only the normal forces perpendicular to the beam’s axis are considered in the design of the reinforcement in design handbooks. The aim of this thesis was to study the structural behavior of notched glulam beams reinforced by adhered plywood panels and FRP. The carrying capacity of the notched glulam beams at their ends is the main subject of this project.
The project has been made in collaboration with the company Husqvarna, which is one of the biggest actors dealing with garden machinery on the market. Together we determined the project goal, “To invent, construct and test a brand new concept for how an automatic trimmerhead can look and function”.

At this day there are several different automatic trimmerheads on the market, both semi and fully automatic. After having seen and tested many of these trimmerheads, we have come to the following conclusion. They are either difficult for users to handle or has unreliable functions, sometimes both. We have, with this kept in mind, tested and analyzed the different models to find the problem. We found one, and maybe the only, reason to why these trimmerheads does not function as promised. All the trimmerheads functions are based on the increased rotation speed that will occur when the cord breaks off.

In our product we have therefore designed a mechanical solution that feed cord based on not only the force affecting the cord but also on the length of the cord. A trimmerhead with a cord feeding function which can activate based on the length of the cord does not exist on the market and is according to Husqvarna, who has much knowledge on the subject, a new and very interesting way of solving the problem.

Since the beginning of the project we have had many ideas and surely we have encountered even more problems, but this is what has given us the knowledge we needed to make it to where we are today. The result of this is a brand new concept with good patent possibilities on several parts and functions which have given Husqvarna everything they need to continue the work and to turn our solution into a high quality product.
Source: Halmstad University
Author: Axenskär, Christian | Winde, David

Proponents of Open Innovation argue in support of its novel additions, critics however question its novelty and argue that the roots of Open Innovation predate Chesbrough. While the increased inter-connectivity of the computer networks has brought a lot of benefits to the people, it also rendered networked systems vulnerable to malicious attacks from the hackers. The failure of the intrusion prevention techniques to adequately secure computer systems has lead to the growth of Intrusion Detection System.

In this study, we have designed and implemented a distributed, network-based intrusion detection system – Sachet. The Sachet word is a hindi word which means – Alert. The system uses an existing open source network based misuse detection system – snort. We have built upon snort to develop a heterogeneous, scalable, distributed IDS that is completely controllable from a central location.

Sachet comprises of multiple agents that use snort for misuse detection, a central server that stores all alerts and controls the agents, and a console for monitoring and viewing the activities of entire Sachet system by the system administrator. The agents and server communicates using a Sachet protocol that ensures reliability, mutual authentication, confidentiality, integrity and provides tolerance from agent and server crashes.

The performance of the most commonly used metal antennas close to the human body is one of the limiting factors of the performance of bio-sensors and wireless body area networks (WBAN). Due to the high dielectric and conductivity contrast with respect to most parts of the human body (blood, skin,…), the range of most of the wireless sensors operating in RF and microwave frequencies is limited to 1-2 cm when attached to the body.

In this paper, we introduce the very novel idea of liquid antennas, that is based on engineering the properties of liquids. This approach allows for the improvement of the range by a factor of 5-10 in a very easy-to-realize way, just modifying the salinity of the aqueous solution of the antenna. A similar methodology can be extended to the development of liquid RF electronics for implantable devices and wearable realtime bio-signal monitoring, since it can potentially lead to very flexible antenna and electronic configurations.
Source: The Pennsylvania State University
Author: Anya Traille | Li Yang L | Amin Rida L | Manos M. My work pushes towards a form of architecture with less emphasis on ornament and a greater emphasis on form, function, materials, clarity and quality. All homes in the plot are designed to cater for a more relaxed mode of family living. These dwellings fit with a modern lifestyle, with the main points being comfort and with a balance between private and communal space within the home.
We used the material obtained from the interviews and the secondary source, to structure our purpose, research questions, and to define the case of our study.

Results – The study concludes with a series of interesting findings; First, the activity of a Freight Forwarder depends on a series of factors that do not depend on the Freight Forwarder per se. And second, Freight Forwarders in order to accomplish their tasks, have access to services that are shared by all providers, and that are beyond their control. To conclude, the study identifies infrastructure as a major bottleneck in the Freight Forwarding sector.
Firstly, a quick overview of the bike is done and the current state of it at the end of the thesis is discussed. After that, the mechanism used to actuate the system is developed and explained, with which some CAD software was used to design and make some FEA. Straight afterwards the work focused on the tests and its development. A quick discussion about what tests should be done, the preparations and also the way that some measurements were done is commented. In order to do these measurements a data acquisition device and some software to deal with it was used.

Thereupon, calculations to know if the system auto-compensates the weight added, causing more rolling resistance, and the oil frictions are done. Example programs are well known as an important tool to learn computer programming. Realizing the significance of example programs, this study has been conducted with a goal to measure and evaluate the quality of examples used in academia. We make a distinction between good and bad examples, as badly designed examples may prove harmful for novice learners.

In general, students differ from expert programmers in their approach to read and comprehend a program. How do students understand example programs is explored in the light of classical theories and models of program comprehension. Key factors that impact program quality and comprehension are identified. To evaluate as well as improve the quality of examples, a set of quality attributes is proposed. Relationship between program complexity and quality is examined.

We rate readability as a prime quality attribute and hypothesize that example programs with low readability are difficult to understand. Software Reading Ease Score (SRES), a program readability metric proposed by Börstler et al. is implemented to provide a readability measurement tool. SRES is based on lexical tokens and is easy to compute using static code analysis techniques. To validate SRES metric, results are statistically analyzed in correlation to earlier existing well acknowledged software metrics.
The goal is to find a solution with optimal usage of on-chip silicon area. The advantages and disadvantages of each solution are studied and a new integration solution based on properties of FPCAs is suggested. A VLSI implementation proves the applicability of the proposed solutions.
