In July 2010, The Washington Post made a move, the publication of a 2-year research project into private Intelligence companies, that should prove to Americans that there are at least a few news organizations left that are not owned and operated by Corporate America. Top Secret America is a valiant, brave and ground-breaking move by the Post into a topic area that previously existed only as a “nutty” carnival act filled with conspiracy theorists and pundits. The Post publication adds relevancy and urgency to the need for the policing of America’s Intelligence infrastructure.

The People Behind Top Secret America?

The two professional reporters behind this effort are Dana Priest and William Arkin. Now, it’s only fair to note that professional bloggers have been covering this story for a long time. Guys like Tim Shorrock have been exposing the inefficiencies and corporate takeover of American Intelligence for years - and they deserve credit for their hard work. The Washington Post story isn’t new news - but it is mainstream acceptance of the importance and relevance of this topic.

Dana Priest is a professional, senior reporter at The Washington Post. She has researched and reported on intelligence issues for years, and she is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. She was part of the journalistic effort to expose secret CIA prisons and unethical counterterrorism operations. By far, she is one of the best suited warriors to lead this charge.

William Arkin is similarly experienced, having been with the Post since 1998 and with over 30 years of experience in reporting on national security matters. Together, and with a team of researchers, the Post has finally launched a mainstream effort against the corruption of U.S. Intelligence agencies - and it’s an effort bloggers have been calling for for years - it’s about time.

What Your Government Doesn’t Want You to Know

The day that I commented on Tim Shorrock’s blog, praising his work in this area - servers at TopSecretWriters were dragged down by what appeared to be a DoD (Denial of Service) attack. I would never imply that the Intelligence community has nothing better to do than harass bloggers in this field, but someone clearly doesn’t appear very happy that this news is getting out there.

What is the news exactly? Well, it’s actually no secret - bloggers have been exposing this for years - but the Post project aggregates the data into one easy-to-research site. The bottom line is that, over the last decade, the U.S. Intelligence apparatus that was always normally run under the regulation and monitoring of our government - has been “outsourcing” more and more of our nation’s intelligence work to private corporations.

What’s the problem with this? The problem is obvious - the top priority of a government agency is the public interest. However, the top priority of a private company is profit. What you are seeing is a “selling out” of American Intelligence to the corporate world - where decisions, operations, and projects are orchestrated out of a desire to improve long term growth and profit, not to protect the welfare or national security of this nation.

How to Take Your Country Back

I’ve mentioned this matter on TopSecretWriters often - we are seeing a corporate takeover of American freedom. This is but one more mile on the road to Americans eventually losing their freedoms and independence, because they’ve allowed their country and their family’s well-being to become dependent upon the products and services of greedy, self-serving corporate executives. These are executives who’s only interest is their own bottom line, their own stock porfolio, and how they’re going to pay the taxes on their yacht and the second home in Bermuda.

If this concerns you as an American Citizen, I urge you to contact your public officials - your Senator or Representatives - and voice your concern. Reference the Washington Post article and tell them that you will not stand by and allow our country to be sold out to the Corporate world.

One of the things that I’ve learned over the past few months, from my research efforts in the world of conspiracy theories, is that ultimately when you research and write about conspiracy theories, you are bound to end up facing tough decisions.

Sometimes it’s a matter of discovering something so troubling, and so damaging about someone, that you realize that nothing good can come out of making that information public. In many ways, a person’s personal life isn’t really relevant to most major news stories - even when credibility is at stake.

Sure, if they’ve had business dealings that are shady, or they have a criminal record, then yes that will reflect upon the validity of their public statements. But what if they treat their family horribly? What if they are controlling and domineering inside the privacy of their home? Do these private matters have a place in the public domain?

Understanding Journalistic Principles

The Project for Excellence in Journalism, by the Pew Research Center, is one of the best resource for Journalists. On their website, they offer a very valuable page titled, “Principles of Journalism.” Unfortunately, in the field of conspiracy theories, there are so many unknowns and so much controversy that even seasoned journalists can get swept away in the sea of discourse and debate. Any time things get heated and controversial, it is a good idea to reflect upon the principles as printed by Pew Research Center.

The following are the nine core principles of journalism - defined so that any journalist can remain within the safety and bounds of practicing true journalism.

1. Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth

This one seems like the easiest, but it’s actually the hardest. How do you define truth? Who’s truth? Many times, particularly in the area of conspiracy theories, beliefs parade as truths. However, journalistic truth is not philosophical truth. In journalism, truth is defined by facts. Facts are obtainable, measurable and easily defined. Upon publication, the typical journalist will reveal the sources (and methods) used to obtain the evidence. This allows the reader to confirm that the information is true.

One difficulty that the conspiracy theory journalist faces is the threat from con artists and hoaxers. In these cases, revealing methods can be detrimental to future investigations. This is why, in the field of the paranormal, sources can be revealed but methods can’t.

2. Its first loyalty is to citizens

Many news organizations have advertisers, but corporate influence has no place in news. Regardless of any financial or logistical support, the journalist that is writing up a news story must remain focused on the story and the facts at hand. If you find that outside influences, such as friends, money or fear, is influencing how you report the facts, then you aren’t doing the story justice, and you aren’t doing yourself any favors.

3. Its essence is a discipline of verification

While it’s difficult for journalists to be unbiased, it isn’t difficult to set aside personal beliefs to remove bias from the story. While the process may feel somewhat like having a split personality - the technique is using consistency in how you verify information. If you are able to develop and follow a strict protocol in how you go about verifying information, then regardless of the story you will be aligning your efforts in the same way every time. Those efforts are free from your personal bias, because you follow the protocol regardless. This makes your efforts objective, not subjective.

4. Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover

This one is fairly simple. Don’t accept job offers or payment, gifts or favors from the person you are writing your story about. This will immediately call your credibility into question, and it will also lead to questions about how much you are personally vested in the outcome of the story.

5. It must serve as an independent monitor of power

As a journalist, you are central to democracy in that you serve as a watchdog against corruption, misuse of power, and fraud. This is a great responsibility, so it shouldn’t be taken for granted or downplayed. If you are doing your best to report the truth of any situation, based upon verified evidence and facts, you are performing a tremendous service to your country and community.

6. It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise

On the Internet - this one is obvious. Allow your readership the ability, in some way or form, to comment and discuss the issue at hand. Not providing a method of feedback is elitist and unfair to the public.

7. It must strive to make the significant interesting and relevant

Conspiracy Theory journalists have a lot of topics to choose from. However, if you opt for stories that are too fringe and irrelevant to larger society - you run the risk of sidelining the entire field as fringe and irrelevant. While it may fascinate you to take on these stories, it’s most important to choose stories that are truly important and relevant to the mainstream - at least in some small ways.

8. It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional

You must become a reliable source of news by asking the questions readers will ask, and not ignoring those questions that may lead in a direction that you don’t want the story to go. Understand that as an unbiased observer, alongside your audience, you must follow every lead before jumping to conclusions that don’t exist. That kind of jumping-to-conclusions is a behavior that’s rampant throughout the world of conspiracy theories and the paranormal.

9. Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience

This is the real kicker. Every journalist “must be allowed” to exercise their personal conscience…their moral compass. Alas - this is where the bulk of disagreements and drama are born in this field. Every journalist has their own idea of moral and ethical responsibility, but so long as that journalist is following the rules of evidence and fact-checking, then journalists must be afforded the freedom of aligning with their own moral compass - not yours.

So, before you judge a journalist for covering a story, for writing about a topic or for reporting a con-artist to the authorities, think carefully about the ninth principle of journalism, and understand that it is there for a good reason.

In this update, I plan to start off by covering the history of the Illuminati. One of the main reasons I started this blog is because I have a natural inclination to recognizing patterns and secrets, the ability to dig in the the right places, and - maybe through a combination of both good luck and good timing - I usually discover the truth behind a particularly strange and complex story.

The Illuminati is a topic that is much more difficult to cover than most, because there are so many wild conspiracy theories and completely ridiculous theories, that it’s nearly impossible to separate truth from fiction. So, what I plan to do is to start from the very beginning, identify the items that can be authenticated and verified, and then follow the yellow brick road of evidence to the truth. If there is truly a secret organization with nefarious motives, manipulating society - eventually the trail will lead to them.

The History History of the Illuminati - Starting with the Bavarian Illuminati

Based on my preliminary readings, I’ve identified circumstances in the mid 1700’s, surrounding one Adam Weishaupt, as containing major clues as to the true origins of an Illuminati, if one exists today. Through history, Illuminati myths and legends have morphed and changed, but these documented origins and writings are real. So this is where the investigation should begin.

A man named Adam Weishaupt grew up in Ingolstadt, Germany - born in 1748 and raised as an Orthodox Jew. Upon entering his teen years, he turned away from the religion of his parents and instead attended a Roman Catholic monastery school. He was an intelligent child, mastering many languages and capturing the eyes of the Jesuits who ran the schools. Resisting their offers to become a missionary, Adam instead finished his schooling and then became a professor at the University of Ingolstadt.

Adam’s passion for languages led him to ancient texts, and eventually his thirst for knowledge led him to the occult, and in particular ancient Egyptian secrets. Adam became convinced that through the occult, the human race could elevate to a greater awareness. His belief led him to seek out others with the same passion and drive to use the occult in this way - starting a secret society with the ultimate motive to transform the human race.

History Illuminati - The Founding of the Original Secret Society

Adam started his first secret society with a small group of students at the University. They named the order the “Perfectibilisen.” Adam’s fascination with Egypt and the Pyramid of Giza led him to use the pyramid as the Illuminati symbol and organizational structure of the order. Many people with even a passing interest in the Freemasons would recognize this organizational structure, with the bottom row as the novices, then the next “advancements” to upper levels being that of royal titles - minervals, knights, priests and of course the level of king.

This very beginning of the history of the Illuminati consisted of a written oath of secrecy. Not only would candidates maintain secrecy about the existence of the society, but the candidate wouldn’t even be provided any information about members in the higher levels. However, members of the society understood that the principles of the order were based upon ancient texts, therefore the “origins” of the order were ancient as well.

There were actually two major things that each initiate had to promise upon joining the order.

->Complete and total secrecy.

->Complete and total obedience.

It’s important to understand what that really means. Secrecy is actually the easy part - but consider taking an oath of total obedience to an organization. They provide the orders, and you simply follow without questioning. You would have to report to an unknown superior. The ultimate goal of the group was to bring about Utopian world without corruption and greed…otherwise called the “New World Order.”

The goals of the early Bavarian Illluminati were:

->Abolish all government

->Abolish private property or private ownership

->Abolish all forms of nationalism

->Abolish all religion

->Abolish the institution of marriage

->Institute a system where the community educates the children

The early goals of the order were to spread throughout the power structure of society and government - to attract the intelligent and powerful with the promise of “rulership” once the Order took over all of society. By appealing to the natural desire of humanity for power and control, the Order would set itself up like flypaper - pulling in the powerful through their own desire for power.

Good and Evil Do Not Exist - And the Rise and Fall of the Illuminati

In this early Illulminati, Adam Weishaupt removed the differentiation between good and evil. Ultimately, if violence resulted in a positive outcome, then it was good or virtuous. So long as the intention is good - the act is “good.”

The Bavarian Illuminati and its principles quickly spread - first through Germany, then Britain and then through Denmark and Portugal. The principles of the Illuminati and European Freemasons merged, and became virtually synonymous. Finally, the order made it to the U.S. - specifically the Columbian Lodge in NYC. Then it spread to Brazil through poet Claudio Manuel da Costa. Clearly, by about 1780, the Order of the Illuminati was already a worldwide organization.

However, Adam’s role as “King” - or Illuminatus Rex - reached a point where the required characteristics of a “ruler” or “leader” were too much for this academic scholar. While his theories and principles attracted new members and led to the rapid spread of the order across the globe, his character was not one of a charismatic leader. First, Baron von Knigge, the man who initially merged the Illuminati with Freemasonry, quit the Illuminati in 1784 after Adam refused to make him an equal ruler of the Illuminati. German political activities of Illuminati members ran contradictory to the principles that Adam had defined for the organization, which led to a disjointed effort and a splintered alternative form of the Illuminati in Germany - with different principles that ran contrary to the “anti-nationalist” rule.

Discontent spread as disgruntled Illuminati members started to view Adam negatively. As fate would have it, in 1784, as a secret Illuminati courier raced across the countryside to deliver a secret message, he was struck by lightning. The Bavarian police discovered the secret coded messages. Unfortunately, disgruntled members of the Illuminati broke their oath of secrecy and told the police about the secret order. The King of Bavaria immediately banned the Illuminati, and Adam Weishaupt was fired from his job as a professor. He ran away and eventually settled in Gotha - living in exile with his friend and associate Dr. Schwartz.

The End of the Illuminati?

Many would suspect that this would mark the end of the Illuminati Order, however this is not at all what happened. Following the fall of Adam, Dr. Schwartch took his collection of Occult materials to Moscow, where the Order took on new life and continued to spread like wildfire. Adam joined up with Jean-Baptiste Willermoz, another member of the Illuminati, and became somewhat involved in the French Revolution (more on this another time).

The truth is that the Illuminati continued to grow and spread around the world in various forms. Although somewhat fractured and mutating, the original principles set forth by Adam Weishaupt from the very beginning, remained intact, for the most part. When he died in 1830, Adam left behind a massive, global organization founded upon Occult beliefs and practices which continued to spread like wildfire.

By almost 1900, not very long ago relatively speaking, there remained evidence that the Order of the Illuminati remained throughout the world as a disjointed, yet strong and growing organization. The question now is this - how far and how dramatically did the Order of the Illuminati spread, and what is the intent, motive and activities of these “secret societies” that exist all around us. Are they simply various sects of an overall cult, or are they larger, more powerful and more organized than most people realize?

It’s been quite a long road over the past couple of years, with personal and professional challenges along the way. In an effort to build upon my private research experiences over the last half decade, I founded TopSecretWriters. However, the path since the first day I opened the doors here has been rather bumpy.

Conflicting Priorities and Continuing Research

As most of you know, I am also a co-founder of RealityUncovered, popularly known throughout the Ufology community as ‘RU’ and not always in a positive light (certainly not for the Ufology scammers).

My original goal with TSW was to explore the world of writing and researching matters potentially involving classified or unclassified private and governmwnt research. Unfortunately, almost every post I wrote at TSW resulted in raised eyebrows by my friends and colleagues at RU. Why write at TSW when you’ve got RU?

I didn’t really have a good answer until I started self-examining my personality with a critical eye. Ultimately, I guess when it comes to writing, I’m a bit of a control freak.

The Future of RealityUncovered

Once I came to terms with my own issues, and realizing that it’s part of my own personality, and part of the reason I don’t often do well in business ‘partnerships’, I sat down with my buddy Steve and we worked through these matters.

RealityUncovered remains on a track to become the leading balanced and sane viewpoint into the world of Ufology and the Paranormal. I am quite proud to call myself a co-owner of such an amazing resource for researchers and enthusiasts.

The Future of Top Secret Writers

Our newly inspired drive to invest even more time and energy into RealityUncovered leads me to take a fresh look at Top Secret Writers. I realize today that I love this site and it would be impossible to ever give it up. I’ve been brainstorming ideas for the direction to take my articles here, and I’d love input from readers.

Updates about the ‘inside story’ behind my personal research efforts within the paranormal field

Ideas and tips to safely and effectively investigating potentially top secret topics.

Review pieces with the inside story behind publicly released details about the various Top Secret projects of the U.S. military and intelligence agencies since the founding of the United States.

Considering the several fun articles I’ve published here about topics like spying activities of the Union during the Civil War, I am leaning toward the last option, but I’d love to get reader feedback and ideas.

This is all assuming that there’s going to be enough time in my schedule to start updating TSW more frequently. RU research can be all-consuming at times (in a good way), but to keep TSW alive, I will be closing down two or three other websites I launched over the past couple of years.

Hopefully, I can find some sort of balance…

In 2008, news reports dropped a bombshell on the western world that raised serious security concerns and quickly transformed into a vast Skype conspiracy American intelligence agencies should not ignore. The first reports involved the methods used by the Chinese government to filter Internet conversations by monitoring Skype conversations and filtering particular “politically charged words.”

While this comes as no surprise - after all, China has been censoring their population’s media for many years, the Internet is no exception - the surprise comes from how the Chinese government goes about performing that Skype conversation censorship. They do it with the help of Ebay, which owns Skype.

An October 2008 report in the New York Times by John Markoff highlights exactly how Skype and Ebay helped the Chinese government accomplish the task of spying on their citizens.

Rights, Shmights.

We’ll get to Gravionics very quickly, but first take a very brief moment to review and make sure that you understand Newton’s laws. They will be instrumental in understanding the feebleness and incorrect science associated with current efforts in Gravionics.

Newton’s First Law of Motion: This is also known as the Law of Inertia. It states that every body/mass that is in a particular state of motion (either at rest or in a uniform speed in a straight line) will remain in that state unless outside forces act on the body and force a change in state (such as acceleration or change of direction.)

Newton’s Second Law of Motion: When an object is compelled to accelerate by an outside force, it accelerates at a rate that’s directly proportional (equal) to that force, but inversely proportional to its own mass (opposite or divided by). The direction of acceleration is in the same direction as the applied net force. Put simply, if you double the force, you double the acceleration. If you double the mass, you cut the acceleration in half.

Newton’s Third Law of Motion: Also known as the Law of Action and Reaction. If one object applies force to a second object, that second object applies an equal and opposite force back onto the first object. In a vacuum, one pool ball striking a second that’s at rest would make the first ball transfer to a state of rest, and the second ball would travel at the same exact speed that the first ball was traveling before the collision.

Understanding Gravity and Gravionics

Newton’s three laws of gravity are approximations, nowhere near Einstein’s Theories of General and Special Relativity, but he used the laws of motion to put together a law of gravity that reflects how things work here on Earth.

Newton’s Law of Gravity states that the force of gravity is equal to a constant value (G) multiplied by the two masses and divided by the distance between the two masses squared.

G (the force of gravity) is typically a very, very small number because the force of gravity is extremely weak - especially when you’re dealing with small masses or on a subatomic scale. Other fundamental forces of nature referred to by gravionics includes electromagnetism - the electrical forces that hold matter together and discussed on a quantum level in the field of quantum electrodynamics (QED).

The final two fundamental forces of nature are the nuclear forces - the strong force and the weak force - which, put simply, hold together the nucleus of all matter - and of course nuclear decay and nuclear emission.

So What the Heck is Gravionics?

In the not-so-brief description above, we’ve covered accepted physics. But if you’ve never waded into the world of Quantum and Theoretical Physics, you’re in for quite a ride. The field is so on the theoretical end of the spectrum that many scientific fraudsters and scam artists take advantage of the “scientific” speculations from many theoretical physicists in order to convince capital investors they’ve discovered the secret to things like free energy and anti-gravity (the two most commonly scammed subjects in history.)

Even our own government is unsure what to believe is real or false, as I detailed previously concerning what is called “technology threat assessment.” In other words, the government would not only like to know which of these cutting-edge fringe ideas other governments have achieved (or are about to achieve), but also what domestic efforts are near successful completion and whether said technologies represent a threat to U.S. national security.

What is Gravionics? It’s a new term being used by scientific fraudsters in the age-old scamming area of anti-gravity. Technically, the word “gravionics” would describe the interactions between the fundamental forces of nature - specifically gravity and electromagnetism - but in a way that could potentially produce technology (sort of how electronics represents technology produced to take advantage of electricity).

Proponents of Gravionics refer to “gravions” much like electricity has electrons - as quantum particles that are interconnected with mass and of course electromagnetic force. Gravity Waves as described by Robert Baker and essentially debunked by the JASON group was an early example of the approach to explain gravity in such a manner.

Most mainstream physicists recognize the term “gravionics” for what it is - a bogus, technical-sounding term backed by nothing more than theoretical techno-babble meant to confuse potential investors.

However, in recent years the phrase and concepts are getting tossed around as physicists who sit on the bleeding edge of real vs. fantasy physics continue trying to discern the difference between the two within the confines of our murky reality - and sometimes for the sake of our own government and our national security.

After waiting almost a week for feedback on the questions that I forwarded to Gordon Novel, I haven’t heard anything so I’ve decided to publish the questions over at RealityUncovered.net.

The decision to do this stems from the fact that I’ve been hearing things from a few of the nutters that suggests Ron is actively working in the background to create a diversion from this particular discourse.

Ed Komarek’s Strange Behavior

Upon hearing about this interview, Ed Komarek launched into a prolonged missive about Ron Pandolfi and Gordon Novel’s relationship. He clearly avoids mentioning RealityUncovered (god forbid people realized where Ed’s information came from), however his book-length description of what’s “really” going on in the background gets everything wrong. The only thing that’s clear about Ed is that he has no clue what’s really going on, but he doesn’t hesitate to jump in the limelight when he sees a major paradigm-shifting event in the near future.

Then there’s Dan Smith. The poor guy is like a leaf floating on top of a turbulent ocean - attempting to find meaning in unpredictable and violent winds, but bending at every whim of the ocean. Ron says what to say and Dan complies. In his mind, everything that comes forth from the mouth of Ron is imminent disclosure. Ron has enjoyed his position of power among the believer community for far too long. Dan is his tool for distraction and diversion.

Ron’s Attempt to Distract

Ron’s “Princess” is his fling - a willing new subject in his elaborate chess-game against believers. Ron runs personal experiments upon the believer crowd, and the crowd says “ooh” and “aah” on cue. Whenever something unpredictable happens, Ron works hard to redirect the plot - to restart a new storyline - in order to realign with his ultimate goals.

What are Ron’s ultimate goals? As he himself has admitted, they have nothing to do with UFO’s. They have nothing to do with disclosure of any sort. And no, they have nothing to do with foreign agents or international espionage. As Steve pointed out the other night during a discussion we were having - the man is a physicist, not an intelligent agent.

And so, setting aside the grandstanding, the drama, and the philosophical meanderings of fools - the ultimate question remains: Will Gordon Novel answer the questions?

Keep your eyes on the RU blog to find out.

There are many thousands of government and industry professionals who maintain some sort of top secret clearance to work for the government or on government and military contracts. Is it ever okay for those employees or job hunters to publicize secret security clearance status that they may have?

I find this concept fascinating, because while many scammers often try to use a top secret clearance as proof that they have inside knowledge about the government’s business, other people are very blase and aloof about their clearance - listing it as just another item on their resume like any other.

However, what these individuals may not realize is that the choice to publicize secret security clearance could be a dangerous decision. I have a some public examples I’d like to show, but since these may be taken down shortly after being revealed, I’ll avoid linking to them.

The Dangerous Choice to Publicize Secret Security Clearance

One of the first examples examples I discovered was that of a former Lockheed PMP Top Secret DOD expert on LinkedIn. His name is John Grinold and he is a Senior Nuclear Engineer based out of Switzerland. His focus was performing “design risk analysis” for Lockheed Martin Space Systems.

Considering all of the conspiracy theories out there regarding Lockheed’s Top Secret DOD construction contracts and other urband legends, it seems inconceivable that someone would post their Top Secret access to such projects right on the public Internet. All it takes is one nutcase gaining access to your contact information, and you can just imagine the sort of madness that would invade one’s inbox.

John writes:

“Performed independent design risk analysis for Lockheed Martin Space Systems using cost, schedule and technical risk models reviewing top secret multi-billion dollar proposal for advanced remote sensing designs (TS/SCI)”

It wouldn’t take very much work for a savvy foreign intelligence agent to dig through this person’s details, discover contact information and approach the employee with a tempting offer to extract that top secret information. Because of this vulnerability, industry and business networking sites like LinkedIn present a significant security vulnerability for U.S. intelligence organizations.

If there isn’t a policy in place within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for all intelligence agencies regarding whether or not employees and contractors can publicize secret security clearance - then there should be.

Here is another case, a man named Doug Evans, a PMP Top Secret DOD expert (Project Manager) based out of Washington DC. Note here as he proceeds to publicize secret security clearance.

Again, this information as well as a full breakdown of his previous work history, including work with Lockheed Martin and with the Army 20th Special Forces Group, are all stored in his LinkedIn profile and configured as “public.”

Here is another example …

In this example, Melissa Bullinger, another project manager, decides to advertise the fact that she has “Active DoD Secret Clearance.” Obviously, having only Secret rather than Top Secret doesn’t make her privy to information of National Security sensitivities, the tendency to advertise one’s security clearance online is an activity that folks throughout the Intelligence communities should carefully consider.

Just searching Google for LinkedIn profiles turns up many dozens of such profiles that advertise their security clearance alongside other resume qualifications. While a security clearance is obviously a positive attribute to have when you’re job hunting in particular industries, should it be something that you advertise to the entire world?

There are two groups of folks who would find such information very useful. The first - Scammers who would like to make use of any very real project that you might have worked on in order to convince people that a fabricated project (using similar or identical code words) exists. The second and more dangerous - foreign agents who may approach and attempt to coerce individuals with security clearances into sharing sensitive information with a foreign intelligence service.

Protecting your privacy within LinkedIn is simple. Go into Settings, and then click on Public Profile. It will look something like this:

Make sure current positions, past positions and even Education are all unselected.

Every government or military employee or contractor should keep their identification private, or at least opt not to publicize secret security clearance that you might have on your record. While a potential employer may have an interest in your clearances, that doesn’t justify broadcasting it to the world and marketing yourself to foreign intelligence agents as someone who may hold valuable classified information.

The Central Intelligence Agency has been something of an enigma for United States foreign policy for many decades. I’ve previously discussed some of the CIA’s recent efforts to privatize Intelligence work.

However, if you really want to know how does the CIA define intelligence, you have to understand the foundation of the organization and the long history of how it attempted to influence foreign nations since then.

In effect, the CIA was born from the Office of Strategic Services, the active Foreign Intelligence organization critically necessary during the major world conflict of World War II. Once the War ended, the Intelligence organization found itself without a real mission - and the O.S.S. was officially terminated in 1945.

However, despite the fact that most government leaders considered the intelligence organization as a “necessary evil” during such a terrible conflict against such a ruthless dictator - the majority also considered such a “foreign intelligence” organization as unnecessary during peacetime.

In fact, when the C.I.A. was eventually founded upon the same basic principles as the O.S.S., the State Department, the F.B.I. and even the Department of Defense all attempted to stifle the growth of this new organization specializing in covert foreign intelligence.

What Intelligence Measures are Appropriate and Ethical?

<!--

Considering the idea of intentionally influencing foreign matters around the world, one needs to observe events during America’s own internal conflict during the mid 1800’s - the American Civil War.

Prior to 1862, the Civil war had nothing to do with slavery. The Southern States were simply fighting to split from the Union. In fact, the southern political structure more closely matched the Aristocracies of Europe, while Northern Democracy was still a concept that European nations did not believe would be effective or successful.

Outright war between the Union and England almost broke out in 1861 when Captain Charles Wilkes stopped and searched the British mail steamer, Trent, suspecting that Southern commissioners were aboard - attempting to reach Europe to request assistance in the Southern war effort. Wilkes captured the two - James Mason and John Slidell - on November 8, 1861 and imprisoned the two at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. The British loaded up eleven thousand troops upon a war fleet and sailed toward the American mainland for war. Before they reached land, the North offered an apology and surrendered both prisoners.

Aside from this incident, where the British almost openly went to war with the North - not a single European Nation interfered outright with the internal American conflict. Support for either side was limited to the normal, non-preferential sale of arms to both the North and the South. No nation attempted to destroy the American Democracy by supporting the southern uprising.

How Does the CIA Define Intelligence by Contrast

Tibet is a perfect example of U.S. Intelligence efforts to subvert foreign political power by interfering in the internal affairs of foreign nations. Since the 1940’s, the CIA has never been averse to using drugs and sex to manipulate foreign powers, or to giving away U.S. military hardware and weaponry to support a particular civil uprising.

From the 1950’s through the 1980’s, the CIA’s primary focus across the world was to counter Communism anywhere is surfaced in the world.

In 1956, the Tibetan people rose up against communist China. The C.I.A. trained a small “special forces” team of six Tibetans in areas of demolition, small weapons handling and even Sabotage. The training took place at Saipan Island in preparation for a CIA operation called “Saint Circus.” The United States consistently approached the Dalai-Lama to team up with the U.S. government to publicly support the uprising. In 1958, CIA agents outright asked the Dalai Lama to publicly request U.S. help for the Chushi Gangdrug tribal alliance.

Meanwhile, the CIA actually brought Tibetan guerillas to Camp Hale and Butts Field Air Force Base in Colorado and trained them in military warfare tactics. Over seven years, the CIA trained over 200 Tibetan rebels. The Dalai-Lama consistently refused U.S. intervention in order to avoid outright war with China. Despite his efforts, the tribal National Volunteer Defense Army entered into war with China on March 10, 1959.

During the conflict that lasted just about a year, the U.S. covertly dropped 362 tons of military supplies - and “guerilla warfare specialists” - into Tibet to support the uprising against Communist China. Eventually, the Tibetan forces were militarily overpowered and the Tibetan government was forced into exile in India.

The CIA has conducted itself similarly throughout the rest of the world, particularly in the Middle East, for many decades. During a 1993 New York Times interview, the Dalai Lama reflected upon the similarities between himself and Saddam Hussein in how and when the West chose to support or condemn particular leaders.

Q: I understand that you were very angry during the 1990 gulf war, as angry as you’ve ever been.

A: Angry? No. But one thing, when people started blaming Saddam Hussein, then my heart went out to him.

Q: To Saddam Hussein?

A: Yes. Because this blaming everything on him — it’s unfair. He may be a bad man, but without his army, he cannot act as aggressively as he does. And his army, without weapons, cannot do anything. And these weapons were not produced in Iraq itself. Who supplied them? Western nations! So one day something happened and they blamed everything on him — without acknowledging their own contributions. That’s wrong.

Final Words

While it’s easy for Westerners to justify the often-unethical activities of the CIA in interfering with foreign affairs, U.S. citizens should also ask whether it would have been okay if Britain or France had covertly shipped many tons of military supplies and offered military training to Confederate forces. Would it have been okay if foreign powers, through covert means, completely altered the outcome of the American Civil War and ultimately changed the course of history?

The final question for U.S. citizens is this - is the C.I.A. even relevant any longer today, and is its mission and activities reflective of the core values and principles of America?
