Seat Belts: Your Single Most Effective Safety Step
Seat belts are the single most effective traffic safety device for preventing death and injury, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of crash injuries

by 50 percent. They save lives:
Seat belts saved more than 75,000 lives from 2004 to 2008.
Forty-two percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2007 were unbelted. A 2009 NHTSA study estimates more than 1,600 lives could be saved and 22,000 injuries prevented if seat belt use was 90 percent in every state.

The good news is, in 2009, seat belt use averaged 88 percent nationally, compared with 69 percent in 1998. NHTSA attributes this increase to the "Click It or Ticket" campaign, originally created by the National Safety Council as part of its Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign.
Nationwide, seat belt use is higher than ever. Yet seat belt use remains lowest among young drivers. NHTSA also reports that, in 2007:

Seat belt use was lower among blacks than any other race.

Seat belt use was higher among females than males.

Seat belt use was lower among drivers who drove alone than drivers with passengers.

State Seat Belt Laws Forty-nine states and the District of Columbia have mandatory seat belt laws (the exception is New Hampshire). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has a state-by-state map of seat belt laws.
Primary and Secondary Enforcement
Seat belt use is 13 percent higher in states with primary enforcement (88 percent) than in states with secondary enforcement (75 percent).

31 states plus the District of Columbia have primary enforcement of seat belt laws, meaning police can stop vehicles and write citations for failure to buckle up.

18 states have secondary enforcement, meaning police can issue a seat belt citation only after a vehicle is stopped for another reason.

Have Your Brakes Checked Regularly

When you have your oil changed — every 5,000 miles is a safe interval — is a convenient time to have your brakes checked, too. Rather than head to a quick-change franchise, have a trusted mechanic change your oil and look at the condition of your belts, fluids, tire pressure and brakes. Brake malfunctions can have many causes. A good mechanic knows how to spot minor problems before they become crises.

Check Your Own Front Brake Pads
If you prefer to do your own brake maintenance, concentrate on the front brake pads. Front brakes bear the brunt of stopping your car and can wear down twice as quickly as rear brakes. Almost all cars have front disc brakes. Drum brakes occasionally appear on rear wheels, but they're an old technology that's fast disappearing.

To check front brake pads, do the following, being sure to finish with one tire brake before checking the other:

1. Set the parking brake.
2. Remove a wheel cover and loosen the lug nuts ever so slightly, so you can easily remove them once you elevate your car.
3. Place 2x4 scraps in front of and behind your rear tires to prevent rolling.
4. Jack up the side with the tire with the loosened lug nuts until the tire clears the ground.
5. Place a jack stand under your car's frame; check your owner's manual for proper placement.
6. Remove the wheel. Look for the brake caliper, which is a bulbous mechanism that encloses a portion of the shiny disc-like brake rotor. The back of the caliper has a small view port.

Use a flashlight to peer inside the port to see the edge of the rotor and the edge of one pad. If there is 1/16 inch or less of pad material left, not counting the metal backing of the pad, it's time for replacement.

Know the Warning Signs

If it's been 25,000 miles or about two years since you replaced your brake pads, you definitely need to check, and be prepared to replace, them. The following are other signs that you should get your car into thd shop immediately for brake work are:

Exceptional loss of brake fluid. Having to top off a small amount of fluid every few months is normal with an old car. A sudden drop is a sign of trouble.

Squealing while braking. Disc brakes have a built-in wear indicator — a semi-metallic layer in the pad — that makes a high-pitched squeal once the pads wear down. Don't confuse that squeal with the intermittent squeak from brakes that have sat tnused in damp conditions. A squeak caused by a bit of rust soon disappears.

Grinding noise. Grinding means you missed the early warning signs and the worn surface of a worn pad is digging into the rotor. When this happens, expect to have your rotor replaced or "turned," which is mechanic talk for grinding it smooth.

Pulsations in the brake pedal. Very likely, your rotors or drums are warped, which causes uneven pad wear and poor braking.

Shaky steering wheel. Shaking could indicate a warped rotor or uneven pad wear. If you're lucky, though, it may only be low air pressure in one tire.

Increased stopping distance. Something is wrong with the hydraulic pressure that makes the brakes work. The problem could be low brake fluid or a faulty master cylinder.
Car pulls to one side when you stop. You may have some grease on one pad. More likely, you have a damaged caliper or hydraulic line.

Brakes grab. Grabbing could indicate pad or rotor wear, caliper malfunction or a master cylinder problem.

Overheating the engine can cause serious engine damage. To avoid the overheating the engine check the coolant level periodically. It should be at least at the "Min" mark in the coolant reservoir. If it's lower, add the coolant bringing the level to the "max" mark.

Caution: Never open the radiator or the coolant overflow reservoir when the engine is hot!

If the engine temperature starts rising above normal, have your engine inspected before this can cause serious problems.
Check the front of the radiator - sometimes it may be obstructed with a debris; it's one of the possible reasons for overheating. Look at the image, this Buick' radiator is clogged. Avoid using a front end cover, as it can cause restrictions to the air flow through the radiator.

Why regular oil changes are so important? What will happen if I miss my oil change?

Engine oil has limited life - after a certain point it starts losing lubricating qualities and carbonizes. Once it happens, the engine gets contaminated with carbon deposits or sludge (see the photo) that significantly shorten engine's life. When you change oil at or before manufacturer suggested interval, you change the oil before this "carbonizing" point, engine remains clean and once refilled with new oil ready to work hard again. If the engine oil has not been changed for long, carbon deposits start clogging the oil pick-up screen decreasing oil supply and increasing friction. Through the engine ventilation system the same carbon deposits build up inside the throttle body and EGR system causing rough idle and possible check engine light. Compression decreases and engine start wearing much faster.

If you don't remember when you changed the oil in your car last time - just check the oil on the dipstick. And every time you change the oil, the oil filter should be replaced as well.
Driving with the low oil level (less than min.) or with low oil pressure may cause serious engine damage. If you notice that the oil pressure gauge indicates low oil pressure, or if the low oil pressure warning light comes on with the engine running, have your engine inspected as soon as possible.
Always use only the appropriate engine oil type (usually you can find it on oil cap or in the owners manual).
Check your parking space for leaks. If you find any, have it repaired before it leads to more serious engine problems.

If you have read the article entitled How Radar Works, then you know how normal radar works. A normal radar set sends out a radio pulse and waits for the reflection. Then it measures the doppler shift in the signal and uses the shift to determine the speed.

Laser (or lidar, for light detection and ranging) speed guns use a more direct method that relies on the reflection time of light rather than doppler shift. You have probably experienced the reflection time of sound waves in the form of an echo. For example, if you shout down a well or across a canyon, the sound takes a noticeable amount of time to reach the bottom of the well and travel back to your ear. Sound travels at something like 1,000 feet (300 meters) per second, so a deep well or a wide canyon creates a very apparent round-trip time for the sound.

A laser speed gun measures the round-trip time for light to reach a car and reflect back. Light from a laser speed gun moves a lot faster than sound -- about 984,000,000 feet per second (300,000,000 meters), or roughly 1 foot (30 cm) per nanosecond. A laser speed gun shoots a very short burst of infrared laser light and then waits for it to reflect off the vehicle. The gun counts the number of nanoseconds it takes for the round trip, and by dividing by 2 it can calculate the distance to the car. If the gun takes 1,000 samples per second, it can compare the change in distance between samples and calculate the speed of the car.

By taking several hundred samples over the course of a third of a second or so, the accuracy can be very high. The advantage of a laser speed gun (for the police anyway) is that the size of the "cone" of light that the gun emits is very small, even at a range like 1,000 feet (300 meters). The cone at this distance might be 3 feet (1 meter) in diameter. This allows the gun to target a specific vehicle. A laser speed gun is also very accurate. The disadvantage is that the officer has to aim a laser speed gun -- normal police radar with a broad radar beam can detect doppler shift without aiming.
Correct tire pressure is absolutely determined by the year/make/model of vehicle AND tire size and yes, the more air you put in a tire the greater the load it can carry (up to its maximum).

Take your 31x10.50R15 LT 109S tires for example. According to the Rubber Manufacturer Associations Tire Load and Inflation Tables (the inudstry standard) at 30 psi this tire supports a load of 1,595 pounds, at 35 psi that increases to 1,765 pounds, at 40 psi it is 1,945 pounds (compared to a standard S10's P235/75R15 105S sized tires 1,940 pounds at the factory recommended 32 psi) and it maxes out at 2,270 pounds at 50 psi. It is this last number: 2,270 pounds at 50 psi that you will find on the sidewall of the tire, indicating both the tires maximum load and maximum inflation capacity. This is not a RECOMMENDATION, just a safety warning.

So JBF was correct, when you change tire size you need to change inflation pressure to compensate for the change in load capacity. You can see from those figures how overloaded your tires would be if you used the same inflation pressure as the tire size that was put on the truck at the factory.

The Five Keys are:

1. Aim High in Steering - Avoid Collisions by seeing, evaluating, and acting upon all information available.

2. Get the Big Picture - Fewer mistakes are made when you have the complete traffic picture.

3. Keep Your Eyes Moving - Proper scanning techniques separate safe drivers from people who make
costly errors.

4. Leave Yourself an Out - All that separates drivers from a collision is space. Use it to your advantage.

5. Make Sure They See You - Seek eye contact and use your warning devices at the same time

twentieth edition of the Ferrari Challenge Europe

Stratta and Basov win in the Coppa Shell
This was a big weekend for racing at the Monza circuit, with no less than 31,000 spectators in attendance to see an interesting package featuring the Ferrari Challenge, the Superstars Series and GT Sprint races. The crowd enjoyed the busy programme that featured plenty of spectacular overtaking and closely contested races that were seen on television in over 60 countries.

Monza, 1 April – Both Trofeo Pirelli races were won by Bjiorn Grossmann (Ferrari Moscow.) The German started Race 1 from second on the grid after he duelled in spectacular fashion with pole man Niki Cadei and then with Andrea Belluzzi (Rossocorsa) who had adeptly broken away as the other two fought among themselves.

By the end of the 17 laps, Grossmann had retaken the lead, crossing the line ahead of Belluzzi and the Ukrainian Andrii Kruglyk (Ferrari Ukraina,) while Cadei (Motor/Piacenza) had to settle for sixth after a spin on lap 13 that allowed the Russian Skryabin to get through and win the Coppa Giovani category for the under 25s. Grossmann was the dominant driver, taking the win in Race 2, which he led from start to finish, from Cadei and Stefano Gai (Ferrari Moscow.) Of the youngsters, Skryabin won again thanks to a fifth place behind Dario Caso (CDP) who inherited a position when Andrea Belluzzi (Rossocorsa) went off track, without doing any damage, at the Parabolica with only 5 laps to go.

The Coppa Shell races were also very close from start to finish, with fights going all the way to the chequered flag, with the drivers delivering performances worthy of professionals. Race 1 saw victory go to the experienced Giacomo Stratta, reigning world champion with Team Forza, who took a really well deserved win as he fought off incessant attacks from Raffaele Giannoni (Motor/Piacenza) and Russia’s Alexey Basov (Ferrari Moscow.) In Race 2, Basov took the victory ahead of Giannoni and Portugal’s Franciso Guedes (AF Corse,) taking part in the championship for the very first time. Of the Coppa Shell runners, the Coppa Gentleman went to Fons Scheltema (Kessel Racing.)

The next round of the European Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli takes place on 22 April at Imola’s Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit.

Dangers of Night Driving

Traffic death rates are three times greater at night than during the day. Yet many of us are unaware of the special hazards of night driving.

Why is night driving so dangerous? One obvious answer is darkness. The primary component of a driver's reaction is vision, and night vision is severely limiting. Depth perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision are compromised when driving at night.

Older drivers have even greater difficulties with night vision. As we age, we need more light to see as well as we could in our younger years.

Minimize Night Driving Risks

Prepare your car for night driving. Clean headlights, tail lights, signal lights and windows at least once a week. You should also have a mechanic check your headlight aim twice a year.

Don't drink and drive! Drinking and driving is a leading cause of accidents – including night driving accidents.

Avoid smoking when driving at night. Night vision can be worsened by the effects of nicotine and carbon monoxide.

Turn your headlights on at dusk. Lights will not help night vision in early twilight, but they'll make it easier for other drivers to see you.

Reduce your speed while driving at night and increase your following distances. Remember not to overdrive your headlights. You should be able to stop inside the illuminated area.

When you’re driving at night and there is another driver ahead of you, keep your headlights on low beams so you don't blind the other driver. If an oncoming vehicle doesn't lower their beams from high to low, avoid glare by watching the right edge of the road and using it as a steering guide.

If on a long road trip that includes night driving, make frequent stops for light snacks and exercise. If you're too tired to drive, stop and get rest.

If you have car trouble while driving at night, pull off the road as far as possible. Turn on your flashers and the dome light. Stay off the roadway and get passengers away from the area.

Observe night driving safety as soon as the sun goes down. Twilight is one of the most difficult times to drive, because your eyes are constantly changing to adapt to the growing darkness.

Prepare Your Car Before a Snowstorm

Check under the hood and take a look at your car’s cooling system. Make sure you have plenty of antifreeze and the hoses are in good condition.

Test heaters and defrosters ahead of time to make sure they’re in good working condition.

Test your windshield wipers and check the condition of your wiper blades. If wipers leave streaks on your windshields, replace the blades.

Make sure you have plenty of windshield washer fluid and use a washer/antifreeze solution.

Check all your lights & periodically clear them of snow and dirt.

Car batteries need extra power in cold conditions. Make sure the battery’s terminals are clean and cables are secure.

Fill up. Keep your gas tank at least half full in the winter to help avoid gas line freeze up.

Driving During & After a Snowstorm

Wear sunglasses. You might want to keep a pair in the car just in case the sun is reflecting off the snow.

Be aware of blind spots created by snow banks.

Be extra cautious of pedestrians and other vehicles in intersections.

Allow extra time for braking and increase the distance between you and the car ahead of you.

Reduce your speed and don’t exceed the posted limit.

If you start to lose traction, don’t panic. Take your foot off the gas gradually reduce your speed. Accelerate again slowly once you feel traction is regained.

If you start to skid, steer in the direction of the skid. Remember, steering can be more important than braking on slippery roads.

Must Haves for Driving Safely

Two Principal Safety Categories

Manufacturers design various safety features to avoid crashes and/or protect you and your passengers if a crash occurs. While most vehicles on the road today have equipment such as anti-lock brakes designed to help you avoid a crash, a variety of new, high-tech devices are in various stages of development and testing.

Size Matters

Millions of crashes involving tens of thousands of deaths occur every year – so it’s critical to select one of the vehicles that are most likely to protect you from death or injury if you should be involved in an accident.

While many factors enter into our decision to select a specific car or vehicle, size is an important consideration. The death rate for occupants of small vehicles is more than double the death rate for occupants of large cars. Finding a car that offers you the most protection while still comfortable with handling the vehicle is a balancing act. If you review the safety ratings of vehicles you will notice that medium and larger vehicles are often rated more highly on safety.
However, vehicles weighing more than 4,500 pounds, such as large SUVs, offer only slightly increased protection for occupants while increasing the injury risks for people in other, smaller cars.

Safety Systems

Safety systems to protect you in a crash have come a long way. First we had safety belts and then a single air bag. Today our vehicles have sophisticated engineering to protect us. Our safety system includes a safety belt, seat design and numerous airbags. Each of these components contributes to safety but more importantly they're designed to be used in combination. For instance, not wearing a safety belt in a car that has airbags can be very dangerous and cause the driver to "submarine" under the air bag in the event of a crash.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

ESC has already proven to be highly effective. ESC helps drivers maintain control in the worst on-the-road crisis – loss of control at high speed – when the electronic stability control engages automatically to help bring the vehicle back into the intended line of travel. The device aids braking, assists in emergency handling, and improves rollover resistance. ESC lowers the risk of a fatal single car crash by about half, and the risk of a fatal rollover crash by as much as 80 percent!

Air Bags

All new cars have driver and passenger frontal air bags, and most models now offer side air bags as well. Air bags inflate in a fraction of a second, offering excellent protection.
Some vehicles without rear seats, such as pickup trucks and sports cars, have a passenger air bag on-off switch, which allows you to disable the air bag. The air bag should be switched off only if you are transporting a passenger whose age, size or medical condition puts him or her at increased risk for an air-bag-related injury. (Children under the age of 13 should always ride in the back seat because of the danger posed by the air bag to those of small stature.)

Lap-and-Shoulder Safety Belts

Always wear safety belts and wear them correctly.

Drivers seat adjustments: be sure your drivers seat is properly adjusted to maximize safety in the event of a crash.

Check the seat adjustments: can you raise it high enough so that you can see at least three inches over the wheel?

Does the seat back adjust so that the entire length of your back fits against the seat back? Are you comfortable with your seat back fairly straight (another way to prevent “submarining”)?

Be sure to leave at least 10 inches between your breastbone and the steering wheel to protect you from the air bag.

Can you easily reach the gas pedal, and fully depress the brake (and the clutch) without lifting yourself off the seat cushion?

The driver’s seat is one of the most under-appreciated safety features in any car. Make sure you purchase a car that has a seat that fits you!

Additional Features That Can Contribute To Safety

Instrument Panels that are easy to read at a glance or voice controlled features that allow you to keep your hands on the wheel at all times.

Backup cameras with Ultrasonic Parking Assistance

Cornering headlights

Headlight Washing Systems

Narrow windshield and window pillars that allow a full view of the road

Rear windshield wiper, especially if the car is a station wagon, hatchback or van

Lane departure warning systems

Pet Car Seats Help Keep Small Dogs Safe

Dog Travel

Small dogs often prefer to curl up on someone's lap – and if that lap belongs to the driver you have an unsafe situation. Dog car seats and other supplies are available through catalogs and in pet shops. Used with a back seat safety belt and a harness (never a collar!) on the dog, these dog car seats keep pets in place, are soft and comfortable, and enable little critters to see out the windows – keeping everyone happy!
In addition to dog car seats, there is a wide range of travel harnesses designed for dogs of all sizes. These buckle into most standard seat belts to secure the dog safely. Some dogs may be more comfortable in a travel crate – and if that's true for your pooch, just be sure the crate is secured.

Cat Travel

Cats, who generally don't like riding in cars, are safest in carriers – which should be restrained, preferably by safety belts. An unrestrained carrier will do nothing to protect the cat in the event of a crash – and could pose a danger to you and your passengers.

Keep Pets Inside Your Car - In Back, Away From Airbags

Pets should always ride in the back of your vehicle -- away from side airbags and safely inside the car. According to the Humane Society of the United States, pets who are allowed to stick their heads out the window can be injured by debris or become ill from having cold air forced into their lungs. Never transport a pet in the back of an open pickup truck.
While most dogs will sleep when they are in a car, plan on making stops to give them a chance to stretch their legs and get a drink of water. And, of course, avoid leaving pets unattended in the car if you're parked for a meal or other reason.

Young Passengers

Use Proper Restraints to Prevent Head Injury

Laws are very strict concerning car seats and other safety devices for children, and with good reason. Because their heads are heavier than adults’ in relation to their bodies, unrestrained young children are likely to be thrown forward headfirst in collisions – and head injuries are usually very serious. Child safety seats reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants (less than 1 year old) and by 54 percent for toddlers (1 to 4 years old) in passenger cars (NHTSA, 2008).

Use Restraints Properly

It’s critical that those restraints are used correctly; if not, they will fail in crashes. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics:

Infants should ride in rear-facing infant seats or rear-facing convertible seats until they are at least one year old and weigh at least 20 pounds.

Toddlers and pre-schoolers should ride in convertible seats. While it is best for a child to ride rear-facing for as long as possible, children can ride facing forward once they’ve passed their first birthday and weigh 20 pounds.

School-age children who have outgrown their forward-facing car safety seats should ride in booster seats until adult safety belts fit correctly – usually between the ages of eight and twelve, when a child reaches about 4’9” in height.

Older children should ride with lap-and-shoulder belts in the back seat until they are about 13 years old.

Whether you're talking on a cell phone, texting, using your laptop or any other device not related to driving, you will be distracted from the task at hand – safe driving. State traffic laws are beginning to catch up with the common use of electronic devices, often banning their use to reduce distracted driving.

In 2008, 5,870 people lost their lives and an estimated 515,000 people were injured in police-reported crashes in which at least one form of driver distraction was reported on the crash report. While these distracted driving statistics are significant, they may not state the true size of the problem, since the identification of distraction and its role in the crash by law enforcement can be very difficult

Defensive Driving

Defensive Driving

Prepare Yourself to Protect Yourself

For decades people of all ages have participated in defensive driving classes in classroom settings across America, and it’s possible that at some time in your life you’ve taken such a class. If you did, chances are you learned some valuable tips – but if it’s been a while since you took a class some of the knowledge may have slipped your mind. Now – while you’re considering how you can prepare to drive for a lifetime – may be the perfect time to sign up for a refresher.

Where to Find a Defensive Driving Class

A variety of organizations offer defensive driving classes. Defensive driving classes cover age-related changes that can affect driving, such as changes to vision, strength and reflexes.
You'll also learn valuable information on how medications can affect your ability to drive. These classes are also a great way to refresh your knowledge on state laws and get some practical tips on driving safely in today's environment. If you haven't had a refresher since you were first licensed to drive this is a great way to become more informed and safer. Many classes are offered in person in a classroom but online courses are becoming increasingly popular.

Possible Discounts

Many states offer an auto insurance discount for residents who complete a defensive driving course. Check with your insurance company or agent for information on what you would have to do to qualify.

The AARP Driver Safety Program

The nation's first and largest driver improvement course designed for drivers age 50 and older. Since its inception in 1979, the program has helped millions of drivers stay safe on today's roads. Available in a classroom and online setting, the course is open to AARP members and non-members of all ages, and there are no tests. The course covers topics such as defensive driving, new traffic laws and rules of the road, techniques for handling driving situations such as left turns and right-of-way and understanding new car safety technology. Course participants may also be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completion. For more information or to register, click here or call 1-866-664-5364.

Techniques to Avoid Crashes

Most crashes are not inevitable. While some are beyond your control, you can do a lot to avoid, or at least reduce the effects of, many crashes. While a defensive driving program will teach you many useful techniques for avoiding accidents, a few of the most important methods are highlighted here.

Left turns at intersections: This is one of the major accident situations involving older drivers. That’s because there can be many elements demanding your attention, like other cars, pedestrians, kids on bikes, or a changing light – and a driver who is trying to run it. Impaired depth perception and other vision changes can make this a treacherous situation. Exercise greater caution while making a left-hand turn or choose a route that avoids difficult turns.

Rollovers: These types of accidents are responsible for 33% of car fatalities. Of those killed in rollover crashes, nearly 75% were not wearing a seat belt. Vehicles that are narrow and taller, such as SUVs, pickup trucks and vans, have a greater likelihood of rolling over. This is another factor to consider when selecting a vehicle. Of course, always wear your seatbelt and don’t speed.

Changing lanes: This type of accident is a major problem for adult drivers. As we age, we may have more difficulty turning our heads to look at cars approaching in an adjoining lane. Rear-view mirrors are important safety tools, but they’re not enough. Turn your head and look for approaching traffic in the lane into which you’ll be moving.

Parking lots: It will be no surprise to anyone who has driven, even for a short period of time, that most parking lots are driving nightmares. Cars are backing up, often with the side views blocked by large vehicles, trucks or buildings; shoppers are hurrying to and fro without a glance left or right; and children newly released from the confines of their cars are running across driving lanes.

The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiarano’s successor has been announced and it’s one hell of a car. The car is called Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and is the most powerful and fastest Ferrari ever produced. The all-new F12 Berlinetta will be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is powered by a naturally aspirated V12 engine mounted in front of the driver. The V12 engine produces a massive 730 horsepower and 509 pound-feet of torque, the engine can rev up to 8,700 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch F1 transmission. The F12 is 30% more fuel efficient than the car it replaces while gaining 118 HP.

The sword of Damocles has never been a more apt parable than it is when describing today’s economic environment. Stock markets are a bigger risk than spending the day at the casino and real estate has lost its Gibraltar-like air of certainty when it comes to having a secure place to put your money. So, with all of the uncertainty and the prospect of the skies actually falling in the next year or two, why is it that some commodities continue to soar in price and desirability?

Exactly what commodities, you may ask? High-end collectibles, which range from rare Art Deco glass figurines and Tiffany lamps to rare antique and classic cars. Now, I know I have mentioned this on more than one occasion, but the continuing strength of the high-end collector car market continues to puzzle classic car collectors and enthusiasts and genuinely confuse investment gurus, who preach the placing of big money in more “sensible” investments.

To give you an idea of just how good an investment these cars have become, one only has to look at the performance of classic car auctions over the last few years. Where, once upon a time, the sale of a $500,000 car was treated as an event, in this market, a car valued at that level doesn’t make a ripple. Million-dollar-plus cars are becoming more and more the norm at a lot of auctions and it is not unusual for an auction house to post 10 or more cars selling at that level at just one sale. As a matter of fact, $4-million and $5-million cars are not uncommon. And now it takes a sale of $10-million for a car to really arouse media attention.

This August during the Pebble Beach Concours week, the Gooding & Company auction house achieved a world record auction price for a single car — $16,390,000 for a 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa prototype. (This is the same auction house that, by private treaty, sold a Bugatti Atlantique for $35-million a couple of years ago.)

At the same sale this summer, Gooding recorded 37 world record prices paid for cars. A Duesenberg Model J coupe established a record price of more than $10-million, putting an American-made car into territory normally occupied by European greats such as Ferrari and Bugatti.

The Canadian auction house RM also posted spectacular results at Pebble Beach, but that is not where it stops. RM has had several sales since then, and at auctions where prices would historically have been conservative — such as its event in Hershey, Penn. — prices this fall were still extraordinarily high. The world’s oldest running car, an 1884 De Dion Bouton steamer, sold for $4,620,000. That was despite a pre-auction estimate of $2-million to $2.5-million. Ten years ago, that car would probably not have sold for anything more than $200,000 or so. This all makes me feel good as I have a 1901 De Dion Bouton, and the sale of the 1884 De Dion can serve to pull up the value of other cars created by the same manufacturer.
There are several ways to play the game. One is to beat the bushes for extraordinary cars that are hidden in barns and garages. This is akin to hunting for Spanish treasure, although the odds are a bit higher. For instance, a rare original Italian car that I bought last year for $50,000 sold this year for $200,000 in its original shabby condition. I had even preserved the dust and detritus that was on it when it was pulled from its garage.

Another simpler method is to buy at auction, but this game is one of patience. While you can sometimes get a deal on the right car, most will invariably cost a premium. In some cases, aggressive bidding may end up with you as an investor paying a world record price — but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What this does is establish what someone (you) is willing to pay for the car. This means that it now has a new value exceeding its old value. Now, you can’t just throw it into the next auction or it will stall, but you can sit on it for a few years and then introduce it to potential buyers again. This is where you will likely make a killing.
Once people are comfortable with a car’s new price range, they will likely feel just as comfortable setting a new price range a couple of years down the line. This means that you are now a savvy player who can laugh all the way to the bank.

I used to advocate that cars are like art and should be bought because you like them first and secondly as investments, but, these days, with enough knowledge, there is little risk in buying them simply as investments.
