Expected to open in September 2026, the new hotel will be created through the conversion of two existing buildings in Braga’s city center. The 58-room property is owned by Hotel Janes LDA, led by Luciana Borges, and will be managed by independent hotel management company Amazing Evolution.

Expanding the Vignette Collection Brand

The new signing adds to a growing collection of Vignette Collection hotels in Portugal, joining properties including Convent Square Lisbon, Casa da Companhia Hotel & Spa, and the recently opened Onyria Marinha Cascais.

IHG says the brand continues to attract owners who want to preserve the individuality and character of their hotels while benefiting from the company’s global scale, systems, and global reach. Portugal remains a key market for the company, and Braga was seen as a natural fit for the brand’s portfolio of luxury and lifestyle properties.

According to Willemijn Geels, Vice President of Development for Europe at IHG Hotels & Resorts, the signing “marks an exciting next chapter for Vignette Collection in Portugal and reflects the strong momentum we continue to see for the brand across Southern Europe. Portugal is a priority market for IHG and Braga is a fantastic destination to house the new hotel.”

A New Luxury Stay in Braga

Known for its rich history and cultural heritage, Braga seems to be the perfect location for this new project. Luciana Borges, CEO of Hotel Janes LDA, said, “Braga always surprises those who discover it: with two thousand years of history, my city has its own authenticity, without the weight of a place that surrenders to the past. It was this character that attracted me to bring the Vignette Collection to the historic center.”

She added that the partnership with IHG provides access to a global platform while the operational expertise of Amazing Evolution will help create a hotel that appeals to both local residents and international visitors.

Since launching in 2021, Vignette Collection has grown quickly by offering hotel owners and industry experts the opportunity to join IHG’s network while maintaining their property’s unique style and identity. In just four years, the brand has already passed the halfway mark toward its goal of attracting 100 hotels worldwide by 2030.

The growth continues across Europe, where Vignette Collection currently has six open hotels and 17 additional properties in the development pipeline. Hard Rock Hotel Gramado is designed to bring the brand’s mix of hospitality, music, entertainment, and lifestyle experiences to the region. Partnership Supports Growth in Brazil

The project is being developed in partnership with Mundo Planalto. The company is responsible for the development, construction, commercialization, and management of the fractional ownership model. Under this model, buyers purchase ownership fractions that provide access to accommodation and shared vacation experiences.

Hard Rock International will contribute its global brand standards and is expected to operate the hotel after construction is completed.

According to John Rees, Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations at Hard Rock International, the project reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Brazil and its confidence in the country as a destination for hospitality and entertainment. He said the hotel will reflect the Hard Rock brand while also celebrating the unique character of Gramado and the Serra Gaúcha region.

José Roberto Nunes, CEO of Mundo Planalto, said the project combines the flexibility of a vacation club with the international standards and entertainment-focused atmosphere of the Hard Rock brand. He added that the development is designed to create long-term value for tourism, investors, and the local community.

Expected Benefits for the Region

The future resort is planned to reflect Gramado’s architectural style and mountain lifestyle. It will combine accommodation, wellness, gastronomy, leisure, and entertainment in a setting aligned with the destination’s premium tourism market.

The 88 room luxury hotel’s long leasehold interest has been bought by King’s Cross Group, for a reported GBP20 million. The same group, which is owned by a major Australian pension fund, AustralianSuper, already controls a major part of the 67 acre King’s Cross estate, an urban regeneration area around King’s Cross and St Pancras stations in north London.

A New Long Term Owner

Having taken an interest in the area with an investment in 2025, King’s Cross CEO Leo Shapland said that taking control of the hotel was a natural next step: “Bringing the asset back under aligned ownership with the wider estate strengthens our ability to continually evolve the neighborhood, while securing diversified long-term income. During the last year, we have built a business that benefits from capital to deploy and the expertise of a world-class team focused on active stewardship.”

Guests arriving at the hotel will see little immediate change, however. The property will continue to be operated by Turkish group Kaya Hotels, which has just agreed a long term lease as part of the disposal sale. Kaya bought the hotel in 2024 from seller Intriva Capital Advisors; up until that time, the property had been operating as an independent hotel, but affiliated with the Tribute Portfolio, one of Marriott’s collection brands.

One of the original UK railway hotels, the Great Northern first opened in 1854. More recently, it was brought back to luxury hotel use by investors who relaunched it in 2013.

The hotel sits within a highly competitive London hotel market, where several new luxury hotels are joining the fray. Independent property The Newman has recently opened, along with IHG’s Six Senses The Whiteley. Other hotels, including The Leonard, and The Landmark are undergoing refurbishments, to maintain their respective places in the market.

Later in 2026, two new hotels will launch alongside the city’s Olympia events and conference centre. These are the 204 room Hyatt Regency, and 146 room CitizenM hotels.

Upcoming Luxury Launches in London

New brands are also set to make their first appearances. Ennismore will launch its Delano London hotel, in the final quarter of the year, bringing a touch of Miami Beach style to the UK capital. And Minor Hotels has chosen London as the launch location for its new Colbert Collection. A former bank building on the city’s famed Piccadilly is being converted, to create a flagship for the new luxury brand.

Looking further ahead, projects in development for completion in 2028 include Montcalm at the Brewery, which will upgrade and expand the existing Montcalm hotel at the former brewery in Chiswell Street. Plans include growing the room count at the hotel from 213 to 221 rooms. The luxury Oberoi brand is also set to launch in London, with a small boutique hotel. The property will be developed by joint venture partners Grosvenor and Mitsui Fudosan UK, on a prime site in Mayfair.

Group CEO Sebastien Bazin has signed a letter of intent with Shoreline Group, an investment platform that looks to develop infrastructure across many parts of Africa. Together, the pair aim to develop what will be Nigeria’s first national hotel platform, adding new branded properties, and taking the country’s broader hospitality sector forward.

A Major Investment in Nigerian Hospitality

Shoreline has committed around USD300 million to the initiative, which will see Accor open up to 10 hotels, across eight Nigerian cities, by 2030. The aim is to support a variety of market segments, from the midscale right up to luxury, meeting the needs of many different travellers.

In addition to opening hotels, the partners will also focus on how they will staff the properties with skilled team members. A dedicated hospitality academy is planned, which will develop local talent and bring forward Nigerians who would like to take advantages of opportunities in the hospitality sector. Ultimately, around 1,000 direct jobs could be created via these initiatives.

“This partnership is a testament to our belief in Nigeria’s dynamic future,” said Bazin. “By combining Shoreline’s deep understanding of the local market with Accor’s global expertise and diverse brand portfolio, we are poised to create an unparalleled hospitality offering that will set new benchmarks for quality and service.”

The shift for Accor will be significant. Currently, the group operates four hotels in Nigeria with 654 rooms, though its development pipeline includes five more properties. One of those five is the Movenpick Abuja, which will open in the third quarter of 2026, having 138 rooms, plus 36 apartments for those planning a longer stay. Also to come for Accor is the Novotel Victoria Island Lagos, a 162 room hotel due to open by mid 2027.

Other international brand groups are already making progress in developing their businesses across Nigeria, notably Radisson and Hilton. Radisson’s pipeline includes no less than three hotels opening later in 2026. These are the Radisson Collection Hotel & Conference Centre in Abuja, a Radisson hotel in Benin, and a Radisson Blu in the central business district of Abuja.

International Brands Crowd In

Hilton will open the Canopy by Hilton Lagos Victoria Island later in 2026, while also welcoming The Wave Hotel Abuja Jabi to its Curio Collection. Into 2027, it will add a Hilton Garden Inn in Enugul and further ahead, there are plans for another Hilton Garden Inn in Kano.

Hyatt, too is making advances, with two Hyatt Regency hotels due to open later this year. Hyatt Regency Lagos Ikeja will have 142 rooms, while the brand is another coming to the city of Abuja, with a 145 room hotel expected to open by the end of 2026.

The $640 million Falcon & Alexander project is designed by TURNER and will combine residential, hotel, and retail spaces in one precinct. Courtyard by Marriott Sydney Crows Nest will occupy the first three levels of the development and is expected to include 100 guest rooms, meeting spaces, and fitness facilities.

Deicorp Founder Fouad Deiri OAM said the project matches the character of the Crows Nest area and the needs of travelers looking for accommodation in connected urban locations.

Falcon & Alexander will also include 212 apartments, retail stores, and dining venues at ground level. Construction is underway and the hotel is scheduled to open in late 2027.

Hotel Partnership Expands Sydney Presence

Marriott International said the agreement reflects demand for international hotel brands in well-connected parts of Sydney.

Tristan Cooper, Marriott International’s Director of Hotel Development for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, said, “Sydney remains one of our most important markets in Australia, and the return of the Courtyard by Marriott brand to the city is a significant milestone.”

Earlier this year, Deicorp also announced a partnership with Trilogy Hotels and Marriott International to deliver Sydney’s first AC by Marriott hotel at the Hyde Metropolitan project on Liverpool Street.

Scott Boyes, CEO of Trilogy Hotels, said the company is pleased to continue working with Deicorp and Marriott International on hotel developments in Sydney. He added, “Sydney’s North Shore is rapidly becoming a vibrant extension of the CBD through new transport connections, and this hotel will deliver for our owners, create opportunities for our teams, and provide experiences for guests in one of Sydney’s most dynamic emerging precincts.”

Project to Include Retail and Dining

Courtyard by Marriott Sydney Crows Nest will include food and beverage venues, a bar, and guest facilities aimed at both short and extended stays. The Falcon & Alexander precinct is planned as a walkable destination that connects residential living, hospitality, and retail within the existing Crows Nest village area.

Founded in 2023, Trilogy Hotels operates hotel properties across Australia and New Zealand. The company currently operates and manages more than 2,500 hotel rooms across 13 hotels.

Deicorp is an Australian property developer established in 1999. The company delivers residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects across Greater Sydney.

Marriott International is based in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, and operates nearly 9,100 properties across more than 30 brands in 142 countries and territories.

The cross-continent connection aims to create a mutual benefit, driving more reservations to both parties. By combining their portfolios, the hostel alliance will be able to offer adventurous travellers a choice of properties with a total of more than 8,000 beds, across Europe, India and the UK.

Exploiting Growth in Indian Visitors to Europe

The logic behind the deal is clear, when you see the numbers travelling from India into Europe. The volume of visitors was up 17% year on year, and providing those travellers with an easy to understand budget accommodation option is key.

“This partnership with Zostel represents an exciting strategic development in extending Safestay’s international reach through a scalable, capital-light model,” explained Safestay chairman Larry Lipman. “By aligning with a leading hostel operator in India with aligned values, we will access new customer segments and strengthen our position in key long-haul travel markets. We believe it is a strong commercial fit between two complementary hostel networks with a shared focus on quality, value, safety and guest experience.”

Both companies will retain their existing branding, but will promote each other’s inventory via their own channels and websites. By making it easy to book, their approach will remove one key point of friction for travellers planning an international trip.

Safestay’s focus on expanding via an asset light model contrasts with alternative approaches being taken by others in the sector. Germany’s a&o Hostels is deploying capital to acquire properties, recently buying hotels in London and Manchester for conversion to their hostel format.

At a&o, expansion in Germany remains a strong focus. The group has signed additional pipeline projects in Heidelberg, and at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin. There, an office conversion is planned, to deliver a substantial hostel with 610 rooms. Backed by investors StepStone Group and Proprium Capital Partners, a&o will invest around EUR40 million developing this new German flagship site.

Also expanding in the hybrid accommodation space is Meininger, which recently signed a lease on a property in Porto, Portugal. The property is under development and has been acquired by investor Covivio. Meininger is also close to opening a property in Edinburgh, where an office building has been converted to create a hostel. The company’s pipeline also includes German sites in Kiel and Berlin, plus Dublin in Ireland.

A Leading Asian Hostel Operator

Avril Gupta, chief executive of Hostel, added: “Through our partnership with Safestay, our community of nearly 3 million travellers will now have that across 22 European cities. In turn, Safestay’s guests will gain access to more than 100 destinations across India, Nepal and Thailand through Zostel.”

Safestay currently operates 21 sites across Europe, with 20 hostels and one hotel. Zostel has over 100 properties across India, Nepal and Thailand. In addition to its mainstream hostel offering for backpackers, the group offers a higher tier of hostels, Zostel Plus, as well as homestays under the Zostel Homes sub brand.

The move will see the group take operations in-house, at a property which it already owns. The shift will be away from a management contract, previously managed by global brand group IHG, with Covivio instead handling all the day to day activities of the hotel via its WiZiU platform. Covivio has previously indicated its long term desire to grow the scale of WiZiU, grabbing a greater slice of the real estate value chain.

A Growing Operating Platform

The addition of the airport hotel into the WiZiU business means that the operating platform now looks after 25 hotels, of which 13 are in Belgium. Covivio says that growing WiZiU will create an integrated hotel platform, developing more long term value from its hospitality property holdings. Over time, it plans to bring the management of more of its hotel assets into the business.

Speaking at a hotel investment event in April 2026, Covivio deputy CEO Sébastien de Courtivron said there is a desire to double the scale of the WiZiU business within five years. WiZiU is building a strong presence in France and Belgium, but for other markets such as the UK and Germany, Covivio will continue to work with other third party hotel management groups.

In recent months, the group has confirmed its commitment to continuing to invest in the hotel sector across Europe. In April 2026, Covivio Hotels acquired a EUR217 million portfolio of hotel properties in the Milan area. The deal adds to the group’s broader investments in this area of Italy, where it also owns several office properties too.

The hotels are in the four star market segment, adding up to around 900 rooms, and located in the Scalo Farini area, in Bicocca, in Corso Buenos Aires, and in Piazzale Loreto. Structured as a sale and leaseback with partner Invest Hospitality, the deal provides Covivio with a long term income via lease agreements of 21 years. The rent is in the form of a base payment, plus a variable extra payment depending on the performance of the hotels.

Active Carbon Reduction Plans

Covivio continues to look for ways to improve its environmental footprint, and reduce its carbon output. With the newly acquired hotels in Milan, it has taken on assets that were recently renovated, but further upgrades are planned, to enable certification of the hotels as LEED Gold, or assigning them the BREEAM Very Good in use rating.

In early 2026, Covivio also added a new hotel in Portugal to its portfolio. It agreed a forward purchase of a new development in the city of Porto, where developer Eiffage Immobilier Portugal is building a new hotel for operator Meininger. The 228 room hybrid property will be completed in the second half of 2028, and Meininger has already committed to a 20 year lease, guaranteeing Covivio a solid income from the asset.
