It’s simply a piece of hardware that stays on your desk while you travel with your laptop. When you return, you can pop your laptop back into your docking station and at the same time connect all the devices that you need to use, since they are already connected to the docking station. It is practically a box with an opening on one side and bunch of computer ports on the opposite side.

It almost acts like your desktop personal computer. The laptop docking station typically has a monitor, keyboard, mouse, USB ports, and ports for headphones, speakers, and drive bays for CD-ROM, DVD, hard drives, backup drives, and its own power supply. The monitor can be placed on top of the docking station. A flat monitor would be the best choice.

Professionals can do this work for you. However, this can turn out to be very expensive to make the whole house wireless. In particular, today’s wireless home theatre systems primarily focus around the use of wireless speakers systems to eliminate trailing speaker wires around the room perimeter when installing rear speakers in a surround sound setup. Just set up a wireless digital media player and you will be able to use your existing TV or home entertainment system to play digital audio and video files. Media players come with a remote control and an intuitive on-screen menu for easy access of digital content through your TV screen.

There are already several products on the market with wireless support - including set-top boxes, wireless speakers systems, media players. DTV usually uses MPEG-2 encoding, the industry standard for most DVDs, to compress the signal to a reasonable size. MPEG-2 compression reduces the size of the data by a factor of about 55:1, and it discards a lot of the visual information the human eye would not notice was missing.

However, even though a digital signal is better quality than an analog signal, it isn’t necessarily high definition. HDTV is simply the highest of all the DTV standards. But whether you see a high-definition picture and hear the accompanying Dolby Digital® sound depends on two things. First, the station has to be broadcasting a high-definition signal. Second, you have to have the right equipment to receive and view it. We’ll look at how to get an HDTV set and signal next.

However neither Palm, nor Vodafone commented on the signing of an agreement for GSM distribution in Europe. But talks for a possible deal were reported. According to a post on PalmPreBlog, the discussions between Vodafone and Palm were real, although the two companies rather deny such a move. On the other hand that Vodafone’s rival in Germany, O2, has exclusivity deal with Apple for its iPhone 3G. So the launch of this phone can be a legitimate one.

While the Americanized version of Helio’s Ocean 2 has gobs of red accents (thanks, Virgin Mobile!), many have wondered if an all black version would hit the scenes as well. Clearly, that answer is… well, maybe. A South Korean Helio page shows two variants of the newest Ocean, with one devoid of all those fiery accents. Obviously, we’ve no way to tell if this thing is ever coming to US soil, but this just might be the excuse you needed to hit up Seoul for an extended weekend.

Rumors of an upcoming price hike for Asus products are unsubstantiated and appear unlikely.

Australian publication ARN reported Tuesday that the Taiwanese manufacturer announced 20-percent price increases for all its existing and upcoming notebooks and Eee products beginning March.

However, the publication did not cite a source or an official statement from Asus. Also, Asus Germany has denied such claims and Asus USA said it is unaware of any price increases.

ARN’s report also cited the economic downturn as a reason for increased component costs to explain Asus’s price hike. However, if that were true, Asus’s competitors would be forced to raise prices as well. A spokesman for Multi-Star International, a netbook manufacturer also based in Taiwan, told Wired.com it has no plans for price increases.

Asus USA told Wired.com it will contact Asus Taiwan for clarification. We’ll post an update once we hear back.

We had heard that certain Mitsubishi representatives had been telling Diamond dealers that production had been suspended on the outfit’s flagship LaserVue HDTV, and sure enough, the story is true. We have confirmed with Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America that the outfit has “temporarily suspended production of LaserVue televisions due to a problem with manufacturing equipment used to produce LaserVue TVs.” We’re also informed that “Mitsubishi Electric engineers are taking the necessary action to ensure that the company resumes production as quickly as possible, while maintaining the highest standards for product quality and reliability.” So far as we know, this isn’t a sign of sudden discontinuation, as Mitsu has affirmed that it’s “expecting production to resume in early 2009.” We’ll update with more as we get it in.

Update: We asked a few followup questions, and we did find that Mitsu isn’t anticipating any supply issues, which indicates the problem may be short lived (or at least it hopes so). As for an official comment on what went wrong? “LaserVue production was suspended due to a manufacturing equipment issue.” That’s all we’ve got.

LAS VEGAS — Asus’s latest 12.1-inch notebook is special not only because a cow died for it. More interesting for gadget geeks, the notebook can hold a solid state drive over half a terabyte large.

Lined with brown leather, the S121 is part of Asus’s high-end line of 12.1-inch notebooks. The notebook, powered by a 1.3GHz Atom processor, normally ships with a hard disk drive, but Asus offers a 512GB SSD as an optional upgrade.

That’s pretty damn huge for solid state. Just a year ago, the industry was barely breaking double digits in terms of gigabyte capacity for solid state drives. The advantage of solid state is there are no moving parts, which thus makes these drives less fragile and more quiet.

Solid state ain’t cheap, though. Taking Apple’s MacBook Air, for example — upgrading from a 120GB hard disk drive to a 128GB solid state drive costs an additional $500.

Asus’s S101 starts at $1,650 with the default configuration. The company didn’t have a price yet for the SSD option, but I’d estimate you’d have to pay at least an extra $700.

The S101 ships end of January.

Alright, business customers, just wipe that smug grin off your faces, won’t you? The unwashed masses (read: us) have finally been given the green light to rush into T-Mobile stores (and online) to pick up the BlackBerry Curve 8900 for $199.99 on a two-year contract after rebates — not exactly the $149.99 we were hoping for, but we can always hope for Best Buy to get this sucker out the door for a few bucks less than T-Mobile proper.

Sound & Vision has a rather interesting article up about the ten films that it most wants to see released on Blu-ray, and while we concur with the most of ‘em, we’re interested to see what you readers think as well. Before delving into your fanboy-ish desires, however, it’s important to note that past popularity isn’t necessarily a sign that a particular movie will be re-released on BD. As we’ve learned before, there are quite a few variables that studios take into consideration outside of just public perception. Well, well, well. What do we have here? Looks like Sprint just updated their site with the Palm Pre’s specs. This news alone isn’t anything special as the specs have been available for quite some time, but we now know a few details about the Pre’s internal storage and some service details. Does this mean the Pre is coming soon or did Sprint and Palm just finalize some details?

7.4GB will actually be available from the 8GB included, possibly implying the size of the OS is somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 megs or so (though it’s still unclear what the relationship between the 8GB of storage and RAM will be, and whether or not the Pre will use Program Memory RAM/Storage ROM/Mass Storage like Windows Mobile or have a simpler RAM/Storage setup like other phones).

Also, MMS is CONFIRMED. So is Phone-as-modem via bluetooth or USB tethering. Yes!!

We’re just as excited as the guys over at PreCentral, but it’s still coming to Sprint first and that stinks for us GSM users.
