<p>When you are in the hiring process, it really isn’t about age, and it isn’t even about how much schooling one has. It is about experience and personality. Common sense goes a long way to someone who may not have insurance experience, but they have a tough sense “of stick-to-itiveness” and a bright, engaging personality.</p>

<p>It can sometimes get hairy when you hire older people because you want to be sure you don’t get someone who can’t roll with changes and punches. However, don’t sell older people short. Many of them have experience with various sales and may have even run their own business at one time. They have invaluable knowledge that someone who is still in college will never have.</p>
<p>Older employees will have the support of your older customer base as well. Sometimes older customers feel uncomfortable trying to relay personal or financial information to a very young staff member.</p>

<p><strong> 3: </strong><strong>Do trial runs for potential employees. </strong></p>
<p>If you like someone but want to be sure they are a right fit, see if you can agree on a week trial in which they will get paid a set salary, and you want to get an idea how well they can handle marketing and bringing in business.</p>
<p>If they can bring in one customer a day on their own that is willing to get quotes, that should give you a feel for their leadership and willingness to go out there and get some business.</p>
<p>These difficult economic times aren’t times to gamble on staff for your agency. You might be in a cash-flow crunch yourself, but you won’t make it better if you don’t hire someone willing to go out and get business. Surround yourself with talent so that you and they can reach their full potential in your agency, bringing success to both of you.</p>

<p>Every independent insurance agent goes through a dry spell every now and then. It seems like things always happen in spurts. Either the phone is ringing off the hook and everyone is working overtime or the agent and the office staff is finding ways to look busy when nothing is really happening.</p>

<p><strong>1. Close the office.</strong><br />
• Yes, you heard it right, close the office! But before you do, quickly make a brochure relevant to a regional or seasonal event you can tie to your products and have a face-to-face marketing event that includes everyone.<br />
• Lock up the office and have everyone including yourself introduce yourself to business, commercial, and residential neighbors where allowed by law. (Don’t trespass any “no solicitation” zones!)<br />
• Some staff members may be terrified of face-to-face marketing, but find other ways that they can be useful in passing out brochures, like finding public bulletin boards.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>2. If you haven’t yet, try an online lead program.</strong><br />
• Don’t pick the first one you see, do your research and find one that has good reviews.<br />
• Check independent insurance agent forums for ideas and leads, but beware of spammers that post in forums. You should be able to discern the good from the bad by reading carefully.<br />
• The better online lead programs may be somewhat pricier than ones you can get for pennies, but like with anything else, you get what you pay for.</p>

<p><strong>3. Reward your staff for their hard work.</strong><br />
• An agent is only as successful as his best employee, so make sure you collect a highly loyal and trustworthy crew.<br />
• You can obtain them by respecting them, rewarding them, and thanking them when they do great work.<br />
• If you have a very slow day in the middle of the week, close the office with a sign and take them to lunch. No agent has ever lost a brownie point from buying their staff lunch!</p>
<p>Slow times can be cause for anxiety, but if you can see positive opportunities where other agents see only negative roadblocks, you will find yourself to be much more successful than the other agents.</p>

<p>Brokers and small agency owners will feel the crunch of this new health care system and now is the time to make some changes so that when the laws are in full effect, they can weather the storm and come out the other side still in business and still profitable.</p>
<p>1. Support NAIC and NAIFA.</p>

<p>• They are insurance associations that lobby congress for the insurance industry.<br />
• If you aren’t sure what is going to affect you or how, you may want to seek out the counsel of someone on board of one of these organizations and have them direct you to someone who can sit down and go over what the changes will mean.<br />
• It is largely going to affect sales of health insurance care plans. It has been predicted that rather than seeing commission percentages, agents will be paid a flat fee, and probably less than what their commissions would have been.<br />
• Small agents and local owners are already suffering from easy access to auto insurance online. The percentage of people who shop and buy auto insurance online increased 20% between 2009 and 2010.</p>

<p>2. Diversify.</p>
<p>• Now might be the time to delve into other areas of insurance and financial markets.<br />
• Go back to school and get more training in other areas or in order to obtain other types of insurance licensing to expand your portfolio of products.<br />
• If you already have your bachelor’s degree, consider getting an MBA or other master’s degree that you can use if you decide to close your agency and work in a different career.</p>
