Air France Flight 447 Airbus A330 Broke Apart in Sky

Air France has said about Flight 447 that the jetliner broke apart in the air there is no hope that anyone survived.

According to French newspaper Le Monde the jet was flying too slowly ahead of the crash, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile photos shot shortly before the aircraft crashed appered in the web.

The photos shown here were taken by a passenger in a B737 (wasn’t it a A330?)

The photos were retrieved from the camera’s memory stick. In the first photo, there is a gaping hole in the fuselage through which you can see the tailplane and vertical fin of the aircraft. In the second photo, one of the passengers is being sucked out of the gaping hole.

One day after that terrible shooting in Alabama, where a gunman shot dead 10 people then killed himself, a 17 year-old German man went on a rampage at his former high school in Winnenden today.

He entered the school at about 09:30 local time, dressed in black combat gear and opened fire at random.

Fifteen people have been killed, nine students and three teachers at the Albertville secondary school in Winnenden, north of Stuttgart, sources say.

He fled in a stolen car first, but was shortly later killed in a shoot-out with police.

This is the worst school shooting in Germany in seven years. In April 2002 a gunman killed 17 people, including himself, at a high school in the eastern city of Erfurt.

The monkey attack by a chimp who once starred in an Old Navy commercial happened on Monday. The pet chimpanzee was shot and killed by a Connecticut police officer after he mauled a friend of its owner. Travis, the chimp, went berserk and had to be stabbed by its owner and shot multiple times by the police. The 200-pound primate, attacked the 55-year-old woman as she visited her friend and chimp owner Sandy Herold around 3:30 p.m, cops said.

Japanese finance minister stepping down

Amid claims that he was drunk at a recent G7 meeting, Japan’s Finance Minister Shoichi Nakagawa has resigned.
He resigned shortly after a shaky performance at a G-7 meeting where participants accused him of being drunk.

“I deeply apologize to the prime minister, the people and members of parliament for the significant trouble I caused,” Nakagawa, 55, told reporters today, according to Bloomberg News.

In addition to the growing financial turmoil gripping Japan, over the past three years the leadership of the country has changed three times, with countless cabinet reshuffles and resignations in between.

Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere occurs this year on December 21 at 12:04 Universal time. It also marks the beginning of winter.

Depending on the shift of the calendar the event of the winter solstice varies some time between December 20 and December 23 each year in the northern hemisphere and between June 20 and June 23 in the southern hemisphere.

For ‘Celtic’ countries, such as Ireland, the calendarical winter season has traditionally begun November 1 on All Hallows or Samhain. Winter ends and spring begins on Imbolc or Candlemas, which is February 1 or 2. This calendar system of seasons may be based on the length of days exclusively. Most East Asian cultures define the seasons by solar terms, with Dong zhi at the winter solstice as the middle or “extreme” of winter. This system is based on the sun’s apparent height above the horizon at noon. Some midwinter festivals have occurred according to lunar calendars and so took place on the night of Hoku (Hawaiian, the full moon closest to the winter solstice). And many European solar calendar midwinter celebrations still centre upon the night of December 24 leading into the December 25 in the north, which was considered to be the winter solstice upon the establishment of the Julian calendar. Persian cultures also recognize it as the beginning of winter.

Since the event is seen as the reversal of the Sun’s ebbing presence in the sky, concepts of the birth or rebirth of sun gods have been common and, in cultures using winter solstitially based cyclic calendars, the year as reborn has been celebrated with regard to life-death-rebirth deities or new beginnings such as Hogmanay’s redding, a New Years cleaning tradition. Also reversal is another usual theme as in Saturnalia’s slave and master reversals.

Many outside traditions are often adopted by neighboring or invading cultures. Some historians will often assert that many traditions are directly derived from previous ones rooting all the way back to those begun in the cradle of civilization or beyond, much in a way that correlates to speculations on the origins of languages.

Diwali, Divali, or Hari Deepawali is one of the major Indian and Nepalese festive holidays.

Divali celebrations are spread over five days in most of North India. All the days except Divali are named according to their designation in the Hindu calendar.

Lakshmi Puja

There are two legends that associate the worship of Goddess Lakshmi.

On this day, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from Kshira Sagar, the Ocean of Milk, during the great churning of the oceans, Samudra manthan.

The other legend relates to the Vamana avatar of Vishnu, the incarnation he took to kill the demon king Bali, thereafter it was on this day, that Vishnu came back to his abode, the Vaikuntha, so those who worship Lakshmi (Vishnu’s consort) on this day, get the benefit of her benevolent mood, and are blessed with mental, physical and material well-being.

The celebrations of Indian New Year include use of fresh flowers for decorative purposes, exchange of gifts and greetings, meeting up with friends and family members. Different people celebrate the festival in different ways but the common traditions associated with the Indian New Year are the lighting up of lights and candles, igniting of fireworks, exchanging of gifts and good wishes

Meaning of Diwali – what is Divali

At a metaphysical level, Deepawali is a festival signifying the victory of good over evil; the latter is destroyed and reduced to ashes by fireworks is the belief of the people. This festival is celebrated on a grand scale in almost all the regions of India and is looked upon often as the beginning of Indian New Year. The first day of Diwali is also regarded to be the New Year for business houses, who pay off their debts and decorate their offices for getting wealth and prosperity in the coming year.

Halloween is celebrated on the night of October 31st. Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, costume parties, viewing horror films, visiting ‘haunted houses’ and participating in traditional autumn activities like hayrides.

Halloween is celebrated in many parts of the western world: the United States, Ireland, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. More and more the holiday is also celebrated in parts of Western Europe.

Scotland has celebrated the festival of Samhain robustly for centuries. Robert Burns portrayed the varied customs in his poem ‘Hallowe’en’ (1785).

The carved pumpkin, lit by a candle inside, is one of Halloween’s most prominent symbols. This is an Irish tradition of carving a lantern which goes back centuries.

Other common Halloween characters include, skeletons, ghosts, ghouls, witches, vampires, bats, owls, crows, haunted houses, pumpkinmen, black cats, aliens, spiders, goblins, zombies, mummies, skeletons, werewolves and demons.

Particularly in America, symbolism is inspired by classic horror films, which contain fictional figures like Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, The Wolf Man and The Mummy.
