10. Serious lack of functional literacy:

Many Asian countries, including China, have invested heavily in primary education. Their fundamental goal is to increase functional literacy so that every citizen is capable of reading manuals or any other documentation and perform various tasks at work. The Indian education system, on the other hand, fails to impart the much needed functional literacy to millions of students. Except Information Technology and IT-enabled services, India’s performance in the services sector is abysmal and these, too, include repetitive work lacking any creativity.

9. Disparity in various streams:

A large majority of Indian parents and students look up to engineering, medicine, law and management as “better” streams. The Indian education system is such that vocational streams are almost always looked down upon. If a young student wishes to make a career out of his/her hobby, s/he has to fight or convince the entire society before going ahead with the plans. In fact, a large number of students have no choice but to graduate in Science, Humanities or Commerce even if they are ultimately going to be musicians.

8. Chalk and talk system of teaching:

The Indian education system is firmly stuck with the old and traditional system of ‘chalk and talk’. Technology plays little or no role, and it fails to find a mention in the policies laid out by various boards of school education – MHRD, NCERT and others. A successful (or failed) research scientist, medical specialist, engineer or any other person will agree that Indian education system should instead of called ‘Indian Exam System’.

6. Little room for world class research:

There is little or no room for world class research in the Indian education system. Even if a university student has great ideas and manages to implement one of them despite having to appear for dozens of exams every year, s/he has to align well with department head, professor-in-charge or director of the educational institution. If s/he deviates even slightly from what a professor with outdated knowledge thinks and believes in, the student is likely to get no funding for research, average grades or no recommendation in future.

5. The education system promotes private tuitions:

Private coaching institutions in India do not teach students how to do well as a citizen, be a successful professional, start a business or carry out research on a topic. They just prepare students for a board or entrance exam. It is ironic that students have to take up private tuitions despite attending schools for 7-8 hours every day. Students, who do manage to qualify in various competitive exams, lose interest in academics, experimentation and research right after they make it to the best schools.

4. Student ends up as jack of all trades and master of none:

Young school students in India are made to study as many as 7 to 10 books on different subjects starting from a very young age. They learn something about everything from Civics to Geography and from Language Studies to Trigonometry, but fail to focus on any one particular subject and excel at that alone. This is precisely the reason why these students fail to carry out research or have little or no creative pursuits later on in their lives.

3. Right to better education is affected by a student’s caste or religion:

India is a country of billions and it only has a handful of quality institutions with limited seats for millions of students. But admissions to these institutions are not always based on merit. The merit is sidelined as a major chunk of the “limited” seats is reserved for students who are born in certain communities, whether their parents happen to be peasants, industrialists or IAS officers. While the fundamental solution to the problem should have been more schools and better facilities for the less fortunate, the government chose to blindly implement the politically influenced reservation system.

2. Formulae instead of concepts are important:

Indian students are made to learn formulae, chemical equations, periodic table, names of freedom fighters, peaks and so on. Instead of learning the fundamental algebraic concepts, characteristics of elements, intricacies of the freedom struggle, etc., students end up cramming information that serves little or absolutely no purpose in day to day life. Why should everyone cram Trigonometry formulae to score well in High School, for example?

1. Theoretical knowledge forced upon young students:

In the Indian education system, teachers impart theoretical and not practical knowledge to students at any level. Even a 7-year-old student can be seen carrying a bag full of books and notebooks all the way to school and back home like a coolie (the British succeeded!). Instead of imparting practical education to students, boring subjects are forced upon them. In the process, the students lose the curiosity which could have helped them learn better, and at a much faster rate. The biggest flaw of this system is that it kills curiosity – the human nature that leads to development.

10. Kick me:

One of the simplest and easiest of pranks that I’ve played on my classmates in school and even you must have tried some point in time is the Kick me prank. A sticky note is pasted onto the back of the victim reading kick me, just make sure the victim doesn’t see you sticking the note. Once he/she will walk around just see how other students in the class react.

9. Place an order:

This prank is simply but can be really frustrating for your teacher. All you have to do is, get the number of your local grocery store or an expensive restaurant in the locality of the school and then place a home delivery order for a hefty bill in the name of your teacher. Just be around the teacher when the delivery guy comes to deliver the order you just placed.

8. Scare your juniors:

There is nothing more annoying than being scared by your seniors in school, and when you come to the 6^th form; there is nothing better than scaring your juniors in the haunted area of the school or say on 13^th Friday. Just clad yourself in a white robe and hide in a dark area, when a junior approaches just pop out of the blue and be there to see the junior to the hospital.

7. Steal pigs:

I haven’t really done this myself but I didn’t waste a moment to feature it here in the list of funny pranks when a friend told me about it. The execution of the prank is easy, just steal a few pigs and put 1,3,4,5,6 numbers on them, let them lose in the school campus and enjoy the scene when everyone is busy searching for the pig number 2. If caught, God save you from expulsion.

6. Shower stealer:

Besides studies and sports, you do learn a little bit of stealing in school. Just be sure you don’t make it a profession though. Stealing in the shower is a good way to refine your skills. Just pick the towel and change hanging outside when the victim is taking a shower (make sure you’re swift and he/she doesn’t get to know of it) now run away and hide the stuff, make sure you get back to see your friend without a change to get out of the shower.

5. Nose flick:

Nose flick is a very classic school prank that you must have tried or been a victim of some point in time. If you want to play the prank on your friend, all you have to do is, point a finger at your friend’s chest, right below the chin and act as if there is something there, and as the person looks down to see it, just flick the finger up and hit his/her nose.

4. Door balance:

Yet another classic school prank, but this isn’t as simple as some of the others listed. Door balance requires you to place a glass full of water on top of a partially open door. Then just be around to see the event that follows when the next person walks through. If all’s in place, the glass of water will fall onto the person. If you’re lucky, the victim may just spare your life.

3. Pick me if you can:

Being in school one rarely gets a handsome pocket money, so whatever little cash that you can grab onto is a bonus. The prank here targets this student psyche. Just tape a thread to a dollar bill, place it on the ground and holding the thread in the hand hide yourself behind a bush or a wall, now whoever sees the cash on the ground will come to it, as the person bends down to grab it, pull the tread (and the bill) away from the person. Repeat until the person knows he’s been duped.

2. Cheat the teacher:

One of the best ways to fool around in the class and play a prank the teacher is to not do homework or any classwork for a couple of days and keep questioning the teacher repeatedly on a topic being taught. If the teacher comes around to check your work, start of dramatizing a panic attack of sorts, try and be very realistic in your acting. If lucky the teacher’s thought will divert, else Lord be thy savior.

1. Spill him over:

This prank is my personal favorite, and I’ve done it over and over in school and ever after school. All you have to do is get a large glass of water and ask your victim to place their hand on the table with palm facing downwards. Now, place the glass (and to indulge them) ask if it hurts (the answer for sure will be negative). Now remove the glass and ask the victim to place the other hand on top of the first (in reverse again). Now, place the glass on the hands and walk off. There is no way the victim will be able to move the hands without spilling the water on the desk.

10. You start imagining things:

Some people stay happy and some, well, they just try to find joy in sadness. If you’ve had an unsuccessful love relationship in the past, you probably would make up a future with your past love in your thoughts many times over. It is important for you to leave the past behind and move on. Do not predict the sad demise of your present love (in case you are already in one) and also do not think about the past one.

9. Be a team:

There are ups and downs in life; there are times when one or both of you are depressed for one reason or the other. On such occasions, it is important that you two work as a team and support each other. For example, if your interest is writing and hers is cooking, both of you can help each other in pursuing your respective hobbies. If the reason for your previous breakup was because you couldn’t get along very well, you’d have by now realized how important mutual understanding is to a relationship.

The only love worthy of being held in the highest esteem is one which is unconditional. It is not easy to misinterpret it. The best outcome of loving someone unconditionally is that you wouldn’t be judging him or her at all. There is absolutely no room for altercations, disagreements, doubts or resentments in a relationship when you just offer your love. No strings attached. Maybe you placed conditions in your previous relationship which is why you lost it.

7. Don’t wait to be happy:

Time to be happy is today, and you shouldn’t wait for someone to come and help you smile. Many people develop high level of emotional dependency on their lovers. Emotional dependency is likely to make you expect more. But a relationship begins to weaken the moment such expectations are not met, even once or twice.

6. Some relationships are not forever:

As soon as you accept the fact that some relationships are just bound to be temporary, you can stop fretting over things that went wrong. Walking past blame-games and guilt-trips is extremely important. No matter what the underlying reason for the failure of your relationship was, it is important to recognize the truth that if two personalities do not align well with each other, they’re better separated than united.

5. Learn quickly and apply immediately:

Breakups do not happen without a reason in most cases. For many people in love, these reasons are just silly or downright stupid. If you’ve come to understand that he or she doesn’t want you to get drunk every night, you better mend your ways immediately or take him or her into confidence. You must apply each lesson you learn on the way before you find yourself on the edge.

4. Communicate regularly:

Most relationships often end when either one of the partners fails to communicate properly. Misunderstandings should have no place in a romantic relationship. Love is a pure and divine emotion. Even the slightest of doubts can shake it up. Instead of frowning over a partner’s doubt, fear or allegation, it is important to quietly understand his or her predicament. A hug and kiss followed by a brief explanation can always help.

3. Respect him or her as an individual:

Yes, there are hardly any reasons that you can list for being in love with someone. One moment you feel the spark in your heart and the next, you know you’re in love. But it is easy to undermine his or her individuality when in love. Just as you do not interfere with personal beliefs, wishes and issues of even a best friend or sibling, it is important to give the same space to your lover, too.

2. Let it go:

This is the hardest lesson to learn from past love. Letting go is very difficult, especially if you’ve not found someone special again. Past love, if you fail to forget it, stays in your heart disguised as a sweet memory. It would make you feel cherished and grateful but will actually stop you from building new relationships. Letting go is what empowers you to create a new and maybe even better relationship.

1. Be yourself:

There is no point of changing your opinions or beliefs just to please him or her. In the long run, it doesn’t really help. When you’re in love, the most you can do is to gladly disagree with him or her. Be yourself and let your partner do the same. Do not force your ideas and opinions on your partner either. A loving relationship lasts forever only when two people accept each other completely, no questions asked.
