At the junction, where the Bandungan road branches from the Yogyakarta - Semarang road, this small market town is the site of the Ambarawa Railway Station Museum (Museum Kereta Api Ambarawa). Years ago Ambarawa was an important connecting rail link, providing a special cog railway locomotive which forged its way through the central mountain range.

60 km south of Jakarta, is most famous for its botanical gardens. Due north of Serang, on the coast, are the few fragments of the great maritime capital of the Banten sultanate where the Dutch and English first landed on Java to secure trade and struggle for economic supremacy.
