Proof of Medical Insurance now Mandatory for Travel to Europe

Canadians travelling to Europe this summer are urged to carry proof of supplemental health insurance as various governments now require visitors to have adequate medical coverage while in their respective countries.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT): “Your Canadian insurance is almost certainly not valid outside Canada. It is essential to obtain supplementary travel insurance ― health, life, disability, driving, vehicle, and trip cancellation ― before leaving Canada.”

David Hartman, president of the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada (THIA) states that “In addition to Cuba, which last year announced it would require visitors to show proof of medical insurance when entering the country, more nations, particularly in Europe, are also requiring such proof.”

Hartman notes that the DFAIT website lists Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine as specifically requiring Canadian citizens to be prepared—in some cases required—to show proof of medical coverage while visiting.

It notes further that in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Estonia, the minimum medical coverage required is 30,000 euros (approximately $42,500 Canadian), while Lithuania stipulates that health insurance is mandatory for all non-European Union citizens, and visitors unable to demonstrate sufficient proof of medical coverage must purchase short term insurance at the border.

Similarly, DFAIT notes that the government of the Ukraine requires all visitors to obtain mandatory health insurance from a state-supported company at their point of entry.

Mr. Hartman warns that the small amounts provinces pay for out-of-country health services would not meet those coverage requirements, although supplemental, private travel insurance plans available in Canada cover, at minimum, $1 million of medical emergency and repatriation expenses.

“Because of changing border requirements and controls, we urge all Canadians travelling abroad to check the DFAIT website at http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/menu-eng.asp and click on the countries they are planning to visit to determine their medical insurance requirements, if any. They will be found in the Entry/Exit Requirements section,” says Mr. Hartman.

In Today’s world, business insurance is necessary to cover exposures that exist in the business’s operating environment. What is important to note about business property insurance is that it may be difficult or impossible to be insured if the operations of the business is classified as too risky. For this reason their exists specialty insurance markets or companies which favour insuring specific risks of business. Depending on the risk level of your business this will determine whether the premium you pay is more or less expensive. As is with liability insurance, if your business is more inherit to risk this will be reflected by paying a higher premium price for coverage. Also, each insurance contract states the limits of insurance which refers to the maximum that is paid out in the event of a loss. By increasing or decreasing this limit it will also have an impact on your premium price. The limit of insurance is specified in the contract and in North America industry standard is to have at least one million dollars liability insurance. This limit should be increased the more exposure your business encounters. A good measure of exposure is the level of revenue your business earns. For instance, if you are selling a product to many stores and your revenue increases from one million to five million it may be a good idea to review your product liability limits. This is because your product is now being purchased by more people, increasing the chance of risk that someone may be injured. Furthermore, depending on the type of business you own other coverage such as crime insurance, theft insurance, accounts receivable insurance and specifically tailored coverages should be considered. Even if the business you own is small, the day you offer your product or services for monetary compensation their exists a risk and liability and as a diligent business owner you owe it to yourself to seek a reputable company that understands your businesses risk.

Uninsured Vehicle Project

Starting November 29, a new system will help keep uninsured drivers off Ontario’s roads by providing on-the-spot confirmation of insurance when drivers go to renew their licence plate.

In Ontario, it is mandatory for all vehicles to have valid insurance coverage. Currently, drivers are required to provide proof of insurance when renewing their vehicle’s licence plates. The new electronic verification system, will allow the province to confirm directly with the Insurance Bureau of Canada if a vehicle has mandatory insurance coverage during the license plate renewal process.

Partnering with the Insurance Bureau of Canada to check for valid insurance in real-time will make sure that drivers have insurance that is valid and up-to-date. It will also help keep Ontario’s roads safe by ensuring there are fewer uninsured vehicles on the road and less risk to other drivers.

Lane reductions on Highway 401 eastbound collectors to Highway 427 southbound at Renforth Avenue: expect significant delays.

Highway 427 southbound collector lanes: expect periodic full closures and significant delays.

Highway 427 southbound express ramp to the eastbound Gardiner Expressway: expect periodic full closures and significant delays.

Southbound Highway 427 traffic will be required to exit to westbound QEW during these periods.

The eastbound QEW/Gardiner Expressway: expect periodic full closures and significant delays during these periods. At Highway 427, all eastbound traffic will be re-routed to Highway 427 northbound. The eastbound York, Bay, Yonge Streets exit will be closed.

Highway 401 eastbound ramp to Renforth Avenue and the on-ramps from Renforth Avenue to Highway 427 southbound will also experience periodic closures.

Highway 27 southbound will be periodically closed at the 401 overpass during periods when Highway 427 southbound collector lanes are closed. During these periods there will be no access to Highway 427 collector lanes from Highway 27: expect significant delays.

There will be no access from Highway 427 southbound express to Holiday Drive and Burnhamthorpe Road.
