height="228" width="320" />
What do the Raps Have and What do they Need?

As of right now the Raps do have an abundance of young talent on their roster that will be crucial in their quest to the playoffs next year. They have added a franchise player prior to the trade deadline, in Rudy Gay, who will be instrumental in getting the Raptors over the hump and into the post season. So far they have their wingmen in DeRozan and Rudy Gay, who will provide valuable scoring and in Rudy Gay the team will benefit from having a two way player that is a menace on the defensive end. The Raps have reliable point guard in Kyle Lowry, who really needed some experience this year and controlling the team, and with the trade of Calderon it has given him the chance to run the team, and its exactly what he needed.

What the Raps need to address for next season, can be broken down into two areas, the center position, and bench scoring. The Center position is occupied right now by Amir Johnson, who has played well, no doubt, but he doesn't matchup well with opposing teams big men. The Raptors are among the leagues worst in rebounding on the defensive end, and the Raptors have to bring in a experienced Center who can help out on rebounds, and be a threat to opposing teams on the offensive and defensive ends.
Bench scoring has been a problem for the Raptors, it has been inconsistent throughout the season to say the least, and must be addressed in the off season. Alan Anderson, who is a key player who comes off the bench for the Raps, will most likely sign else where at the end of the season, so it is important for the Raps to bring in some role players, with experience, who can also score on a consistent basis.

It will be a very interesting and busy off season for the Raptors as they look ahead to next season.

Toronto Raptors vs Milwaukee Bucks Pre Game Analysis

Saturday night will bring a game that features teams going in different directions, the Toronto Raptors who are planning for next season and the Milwaukee Bucks who are getting ready for some playoff action, which will most likely see them face the dangerous Miami Heat in the first round.

Both teams will be finishing up back to back games, where the Raptors faced the Timberwolves on Friday and the Bucks faced the Knicks. The Bucks are slumping heading into the playoffs, losing nine out of their last 13 games, while the Raps are three and seven in their last ten games but won their last game against Washington with ease. The Raptors will look for some redemption on Saturday against the Bucks, as they have not had much success against them this season, going 0-2 in the season series. More importantly the Raps lost their last game in overtime against the Bucks in early March, which proved to be a huge blow to the teams confidence and fainted any Raptors playoff hopes.
The Milwaukee Bucks enjoy playing Toronto, and will look to turn a new leaf as they head into the playoffs, as they have won the last nine games against the Raps.

Key Match-Up
JJ Reddick vs Rudy Gay
Reddick is a streaky scorer, that comes off the bench for the Bucks and can put huge numbers from behind the arc. Reddick is one of those players who really enjoys playing against the Raps, during his time with the Magic and now the Bucks. Rudy Gay has played more effectively for the Raps in the last week and was a key component in the win for the Raptors against the Wizards. Look for either one of these players to be the crucial factor, in a win for their team.

Probable Starters

Toronto: Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Amir Johnson, Jonas Valanciunas

Milwaukee: Brandon Jennings, Monta Ellis, Marquis Daniels, Ersan Ilyasova, Larry Sanders

Predictions

Tonight's game will be an interesting one between two teams that are heading in different directions, but both have poor records over the last 10 -12 games. Look for the Raptors to come out with the win on Saturday and snap their horrible record and losing streak against the Bucks. I would touch the over/under for this game, but would take the Raptors to cover the spread.

Raptors vs. Pistons Pre-Game Analysis

Tonight the Toronto Raptors will look to end their five gaming loosing streak as they visit Detroit to play the Pistons. Tonight's game will also have another featuring story line, as it marks the first game Jose Calderon will play against his ex team in the Raptors.

The Pistons are on much of the same path, as they have lost 11 out of their last 12 games, with their last win coming in a point win over Charlotte. Despite this free fall by the Pistons they are still only two and half games behind the Raptors in the Eastern Conference. Both teams have secured a victory against each other in the season series, and Greg Monroe has been huge for the Pistons in this series, averaging over 27 and 10.5 rebounds. Look for the Raps to limit Amir's playing time tonight as he banged up his leg against Atalanta on Wednesday, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure he is alright.

Key Match Up
Lowry vs. Calderon
A key match up for tonight's game will be between former teammates in Jose Calderon and Kyle Lowry. The two battled for starting positions in Toronto, until Bryan Colangelo made the big trade to land Rudy Gay. Look for this match up to be intense and competitive.

Probable Starters
Toronto: Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Amir Johnson, Jonas Valanciunas

Detroit: Jose Calderon, Brandon Knight, Kyle Singler, Jason Maxiell, Greg Monroe

Game Time : 7:30 pm on Sportsnet One

Up next for the Raptors is the Washington Wizards followed by another meeting with the Pistons on Monday. There has been signs of worry from leafs nation and because everything is under the microscope in this city, it starts the talks of possible trades the Leafs could make to secure themselves a spot in the post season. With 19 games remaining in this short season, the Leafs have found themselves in a little bit of a tail spin, one we have see before, that ends up costing them a playoff position, but what pieces do they need to get them over this slump. The Leafs according to numerous reports are still in the hunt for a center and a top four defense-men, which is kind of bland, as most teams are looking for the same. A rumor that has surfaced over the last couple of days, is that the Leafs are eyeing Rebeiro from the Capitals, who has played well this season, scoring 9 goals and adding 19 assists in 24 games. But the problem is Ribeiro is much like Nazem Kadri of the Leafs, who is already playing well and could just be given more ice time. To get Ribeiro the Leafs would have to part with a second round draft prick and a prospect, which is much of the same of what the Capitols gave up to get him from Dallas. Now Ribeiro is a good player, has veteran experience, and can help with scoring and play-making, but in my opinion, the Leafs should not make this move, as they not only have a similar player on the team right know who playing well in Kadri, but it goes against their philosophy of having big players.

In terms of a top four defense-men there has been no players named but a few players that could help them and that could be available are Jay Bouwmeester and Robyn Regehr. If their respective teams continue to fall these players could be assets that the Flames and Sabres are willing to part with.

The last 5 games for the Leafs have been disappointing, however their next two games against the Lightning and Sabres should be games that they win. These next two games are also crucial for the Leafs as they have two games coming up against Boston.

Being a player in Toronto means that when things are going well the media praises you, however when the team goes on a little slide the team is under the microscope and the rumor mill is created. But rumors are just speculations and we have to wait until something actually happens.

NBA: Who Will Stop The Heat

Who is going to stop the Heat, as Miami have been on a path of little resistance over the last 23 games, with exception of the Celtics game where they had too battle back from a 17 point deficit, and are closing in on the NBA record of 33 wins in a row, held by the 71-72 Lakers.

So who could stop King James and the Heat?

Could it be the Cleveland Cavaliers without Irving, lack luster teams like Charlotte, Orlando and Detroit or even the Bulls without Derrick Rose?

These are the teams that Heat are set to face, over the next week or so, and they don't seem like the teams that have the ability, skill or depth to overthrow the king and the Heat. However, during illusive winning streaks in sports it is always teams that you are expected to beat that snap your winning streak. Now, with the way Miami has been playing, and their ability to win in all situations, whether it be coming back from a 17 point deficit to Lebron hitting a game winning shot with seconds remaining, to just flat out blowing out teams, I do not think that any of their upcoming games over the next week will pose a threat to their winning streak.

James is carrying is own sign of march madness and he's rounded up the rest of the Heat to follow suit, as the Heat are overcoming career best games from opposing players, like Jeff Green who had a career high 43 points in the loss to the Heat in their last game. With a limp Eastern Conference and and a fairly easy remaining schedule for the Heat as the season winds down and comes to an end, there seems to be no team that could stop the Heat.

The main question for the Heat is, will this winning streak translate to success in the post season??

The answer is yes, as right now it looks like the Heat will face off against the Bucks in the first round, and this should be a fairly easy round for the Heat, as the Bucks do not match up well against the Heat, except in the rebounding category. The more interesting match up would be if the face the Pacers in the second round, as Miami hasn't fared to well against the Pacers this season losing two out of three so far.

So who will stop the Heat as the regular season winds down, most likely no one, in a limp Eastern Conference, as King James and the Heat are on a tear and look to surpass that illusive 33 game winning streak held by the 1971-72 Lakers.

Andrea Bargnani's NBA Season Cut Short

Toronto Raptors fans may have see the last of Andrea Bargnani, as his NBA season has been cut short due to an elbow injury.

The Raptors announced on Wednesday that the seven foot center is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a sprained right elbow, an injury that is not related to his previous elbow injury that sidelined him for 26 games earlier in the season.

Bargnani has averaged 12.7 points and has shot just over 40 percent from the field in the little amount of games he has played this season for the Raps. Bargnani's season has been riddled with injuries, and has been subject to many trade rumors, and Raptors fans may have just seen the last of the former number one pick.

The Raps need to address a few needs in the summer starting with a big men who can help the team on rebounding, in which they are among the leagues worst, provide scoring, and be a menace to opposing teams top players. The Raptors also need bench scoring, as Alan Anderson is most likely to sign with another team, so the Raps will need to address this through the free agent market or via trade.

A rumor that has been floating around is trading Bargnani to the Lakers for Gasol, and then bringing back Jose Calderon, as the two are great friends and have played together on the Spanish national team. This would be a great move for the team an address some of their main concerns, the only problem is that they would have three point guards, in Lowry, Calderon and Lucas. However, this can easily be addressed through packaging Lucas in a trade.

As the season winds down, Raptors can only hope that next year the team will have a better start and remain competitive throughout the rest of the season.

With Bargnani's season being cut short, this is most likely the last time we see the former number one pick in a Toronto Raptors uniform.

NBA: Kobe Leads LA to Victory Over Raps

Kobe lead the Lakers to victory over the Raptors last night in LA, with a game winning driving dunk with the less than 11 seconds left in overtime. The Toronto Raptors went into LA with nothing to lose, as their playoff chances were slim to none, and gave the Lakers a run for their money. The game although entertaining, and showed the character of a thriving Lakers team, also showed Raptors fans what the team is missing to compete with a team like the Lakers. Towards the end of the game the Raps found themselves up 107-103 with the about 30 seconds left in the game, and chose to take long 3 point shot from Kyle Lowry that missed the mark and was eventually collected by the Lakers. This play was the crucial point in the game for the Raptors, they simply chose the wrong shot shot and shot taker. Time was on their side and they were up by four, all they had to do was put the ball in the hands of DeRozan or Gay and let the drive the ball. Kyle Lowry is not an efficient 3 point shooter to be taking a shot like that, especially in a close game against the Lakers and when Kobe is on a hot streak. Another lack luster choice by the Raptors was after Kobe hit the three to tie the game the Raptors had just over 4 seconds left to answer back and missed on a Rudy gay step back jumper. There was no problem with the player taking the shot, as Rudy Gay has been clutch in these situations before for the Raps, however, a more ideal play would be for either Rudy or DeMar to drive the ball. Casey to take a smaller approach in the second half and in overtime against the Lakers, which did prove to work in his favor, until Amir fouled out on OT and Aaron Gray came in. Once Gray checked in the Raps were only able to score 3 points in two and a half minutes and the mojo of the team really shifted once Gray checked in. Steve Nash hit a clutch 3 pointer to tie the game at 115 and Kobe put down a two handed dunk, which was contested by the majority of the Raps on that play, to give the Lakers the lead and which proved to be a the game winning shot. The Raps weren't able to comeback in the final minute with misses from Rudy Gay and a missed free throw from Alan Anderson, and dropped to the Lakers in overtime 118-116.

Need To Know
Dwight Howard looked like the Dwight that we've seen in Orlando, finishing with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and although he benefited from the double teams on Kobe he still played well and was key in the Lakers comeback.

Just after Kobe dropped 42 in New Orleans, he had another dominating game that saw him finish with 41 points, 12 assists and 6 rebounds and showed no signs of slowing down in the near future. Kobe's second halves over the last couple of games have been insane, and have been the main reason why the Lakers have been able to over come deficits and win games. The team is definitely following his lead, and it looks quite apparent that Kobe will lead them into a playoff spot in the West.

The Lakers defense caused the Raps to commit 17 turnovers, and also won in terms of rebounds 47-43.

For the Raptors, they have to get better on the boards, as they are among the leagues worst in this category, and have to get DeMar more touches, as they need that driving aspect in their game.

Kobe Bryant lead the Lakers to victory for the second time in a couple of days, and has inched the Lakers closer to that all important final playoff spot in the West.

Lakers Playoff Chances??

The Lakers playoff chances seemed blurry at times during the first part of the season, however with strong recent play, the Lakers sit only 1.5 games back of the final playoff spot in the West, which is held by the Utah Jazz. The Lakers are once again following the lead of star Kobe Bryant, as a prime example could be in the New Orleans games, where the Lakers found themselves down 25 points at the half and 18 points going into the fourth quarter. Now, how the Lakers found themselves down by 25 to New Orleans is another questions, as no team should ever find themselves in that type of a whole to New Orleans, but it happened, and its what the Lakers did through the second half to recuperate and put a W in the win column. Kobe chipped away at the lead in the fourth by notching in 18 points and 4 assists, and did not take a rest in the second half of the game, which says a lot about a player who is considering retirement after his contract expires. Kobe ended the night with 42 points and 12 assists and lead the team on offense especially in the fourth, and Dwight Howard did his part on defense in the fourth, which enable the Lakers to make the extraordinary comeback. Over the last games Kobe has been shooting at a high volume, averaging just over 35 points a game, 6 assists and shooting just over 56 percent. From perspectives all over the NBA, the Lakers are peaking at the right time, and although in 9 place right now, they will make the playoffs, Kobe will make sure of that, the question is which position will they finish in?
Look for the Lakers to finish in the seventh spot while the Houston takes the eight spot. Now despite their sub five hundred record, its safe to say that the Raptors have been playing better ball over the last couple of months and have turned around their season from their horrific start, where they won only four out of their first 23 games. The addition of Rudy Gay, who was acquired in a three team trade, which saw the departure of the long time serving Raptor in Jose Calderon and the youthful Ed Davis, has proved to be an additional boost and uplifting for the team, as they have since continued to improve their game and played above five hundred basketball.

The main concern for fans now is, is the current Raptors team a playoff team? The answer is no, as even with the addition of Rudy Gay, and on a more smaller note, Sebastian Telfair, the Raptors are still missing key components that would enable them to play consistent ball and make a dent in the Eastern Conference. Yes they have DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay and who can drive the basket, hit crucial shots and create open looks for other players on the floor, however the Raptors are still missing that dignified big man who can rebound on the defensive and offensive boards, hits shots inside and create a problem for key opposing players. The Raptors have received contributions from bench players like Alan Anderson and John Lucas this season, however, it has been inconsistent on a game to game basis, and has hurt the Raptors in alot of games this season.

Now fans today are asking why didn't Colangelo make the trade to Chicago for Boozer and Robinson? It makes sense from from a fans perspective that in acquiring these two players it would fill the gap and Toronto to the next level, as Robinson would provide ample scoring from the bench and Boozer would give the Raptors a better presence on the boards and in the paint. However, the Raptors are building or at least trying to build a cohesive unit that can last for the next couple of years, and want to have players that get along in the locker room and want to play in Toronto. Nate Robinson has been around a number of teams and has had previous clashes with teammates and coaches, which is not the look or the kind of player the Raps want in their dressing room. Boozer is a great player and would definitely take the Raptors to the next level, however is contract is a problem , and with the Raptors already investing huge amounts of money in players like Rudy and DeMar, it would put the team in as situation where they would n't be able to have these key guys past this year. This why it made sense for the Raptors to hold on to Bargnani and not make the trade at the deadline, as they now have the opportunity to wait until the summer to better explore their options.

Raptors Needs
Despite being a sub five hundred team the Raptors are on the right path and have added a key component in Rudy gay that will be detrimental to their success in the near future. The Raptors will challenge for a playoff spot this season, and it will most likely come down to the last couple of games, However the reality is that they are ultimately not a playoff ready team that can handle the likes of Miami, New York, Indiana or Atlanta. What is a necessity for the Raptors in the off season is a Center that is gritty , can score in the paint, and provide much needed help on the boards, and they need role players that can provide a spark from the bench and contribute to the team on a consistent basis.

Although, the Raps are not a playoff ready team this year, it is clear, that they are not only on the right path in building a cohesive unit that is playoff ready but will be in the playoff hunt next season and will have the ability to better match up against top teams in the East.

Is Amir Johnson The Answer to Raptors Center Position

Amir Johnson is a work horse that plays his heart out every night for the Toronto Raptors, he is valuable player to have in the locker that is respected by team members and has shown that he can play at high levels on a consistent basis. However, with that being said, is Amir Johnson the answer to the Raptors Center position. Although he has shown his ability to work hard night in and night out, and ability to bang on the boards, he is still is not the typical Center that the Raptors are looking for that can compete with the big boys. Amir would be a much better threat coming off the bench and give the Raps much needed help in terms of bench scoring and defense. Now the Raps currently do not have much options available to them in terms of Centers, other than Jonas Valancuinas, however he is a rookie, still young and developing, so for now Amir is they guy. The Center position and bench scoring is the main concerns for the Raptors, and addressing this in the off season will be a top priority. An idea for the Raps would be to ideally make a deal for Pau Gasol from the Lakers, and let him handle of the duties of a Center and shift Amir to another position or have him come off the bench. In addition, to address the bench scoring, if the Raps do in fact acquire Gasol, they can try and lure back Calderon, as the two have played together on the Spanish team and are good friends off the court. I think that these moves will address both needs for the Raptors and give them the ability to better compete in the East.

For now Amir is they guy for the Center position, and has played well, as we have seen in most recent game against the Golden State Warriors, where he has big for the Raptors on the offensive boards. However, as the season approaches an end, the Raptors will look to address situation and find a more suitable Center that can help improve the Raptors rebounding on both the offensive and defensive ends, as they are among the leagues worst in this category, and one that could add valuable scoring. All in all, Amir is a valuable player for the Raps, the key for the Raps is deciding what they will do in the off season and then determine what role Amir will play on the team.

Depending on the pieces that Raps add this summer, do you think Amir should start or come off the bench next season

Should the Raptors Keep John Lucas?

John Lucas was signed in the off season of 2012 by the Toronto Raptors to a two year contract, with the expectations of being a viable back up point guard that can assist the team when ex Raptor Jose Calderon and now starting point Kyle Lowry are in need of rest or having lack luster performances. Now Lucas has shown at times, especially after the departure of Jose Calderon that he is more than able to handle the duties of being a reliable back up point guard that has kept the Raptors in many games and provided a spark for other key Raptor players. However, it is his shoot first mentality, that can end up hurting the teams bench play.

Salary is definitely not a concern for the Raptors when it comes to Lucas, it his ability and skills to help the team with valuable and reliable scoring and distribution of the ball from off the bench. Lucas has always been a shoot first type of player, which does hinder questions about his ability to distribute the ball and create better shots for players around him. Raptor fans has seen glimpses of his ability to score more recently, however, he has had games where he has had lack luster shooting performances and continued to throw up shots, in which some cases he could have found a better shot for another Raptor. Now, the Raps do not have many options of scoring from the bench other than Lucas and Anderson, so and even further discussion might be, how will the bench situation be addressed in the summer?

Lucas hasn't done a terrible job coming off the bench, however, as the Raptors continue to add pieces to make them a playoff contender, and hopefully address the bench situation in the summer, I find highly unlikely that Lucas will fit into the system and direction of the team next season.

Look for the Raptors to add a more reliable veteran that can distribute the ball better, create better shots for other bench players and has the ability to score. The Raptors can address this via trade and package Lucas with another player, since he is still under contract or via the free agent market depending on what other pieces they add during the off season. Depending on the pieces added in the off season, it will most likely determine the future of John Lucas with the Raptors.
Do the Raptors Have a Legitimate Number 1 Point Guard

The Raptors seasons to date has been plagued by trials and tribulations that have seen them start the season at 4-19, comeback strong in the month of January, make a major trade before the deadline that brought in Rudy Gay, go on a losing streak at the end of February that may have taken them out of the playoff picture and the whole controversy surrounding Andrea Bargnani. Yet, with all that has been going on with the team, no one has really contested the point guard situation for the Raptors. Do they actually have a legitimate number one point guard that can lead the team down the floor and distribute the ball effectively?
The Raps started the season with 3 point guards, in Calderon, Lowry, and Lucas, however a trade before the deadline saw long time serving Raptor in Jose Calderon being dealt in a three team trade that brought Rudy Gay to Toronto, leaving the Raps with Lowry as the starting point guard and John Lucas and newly acquired Sebastian Telfair as the back up. Now both Lowry and Lucas have played well at times this year and have shown signs of being able to handle the load of their respective duties, however there has also been instances that shows inability to distribute the ball, hit crucial shots, hold emotions, and inconsistency.

Kyle Lowry wanted to be the main guy, and wanted the chance to run the team and has been given that opportunity with the departure of Calderon. But has he really stepped his game up, lead the team to where they need to be, and has he shown front office personnel that he is the right guy to lead the team in the future? Here's what he has done this season for the Raptors, he as average 12.7 points a game and 6 assists, which are decent numbers, however when you have viable scorers on the floor like Bargnani, Derozan and you can even through Anderson into that category, and now Rudy Gay a player like Lowry has to be able to not distribute the ball better but also create better plays that enable the rest of the team to get better shots. Lowry does have upside, there is no question about it, he is still young and has the young Raptors continue to grow and develop so will Lowry. The question is, will the Raptors put the teams in the hand of Lowry or bring in someone in the off season. My guess is that the Raps will stick with Lowry for next season, but bring in a veteran to back him up that has the ability to start if Lowry is struggling. If the Raps want to go in a different direction there are plenty of options available to them via the free agent market, like ex Raptor Jose Calderon, Mo Williams, and Devin Harris.

Sebastian Telfair's contract is up at the end of the season and will most likely not be signed to a new contract and John Lucas is under contract for another year. Lucas was involved in many rumors before the trade deadline, to be involved in a package deal wit Bargnani to the Bulls and a number of other teams. This doesn't mean that its a guarantee that he will be traded in the summer, but look for him or Alan Anderson to be packaged with Bargnani if they do make a deal.

So do the Raps have a number one point guard, its tough to say, while the team continues to add new pieces, the overall direction of the team get better, but it will take time to see how Lowry is able to progress and integrate himself with the current team and the future moves that the Raps make.

Chicago Make a Confusing Transaction to Help Them Down The Stretch

The Chicago Bulls have brought on big men, in Louis Amundson, to help them down the stretch drive, after signing him on March 1stto a 10-day contract. The signing of the big man hinders questions to what his role will actually be on the team and how will it help the Bulls as the playoffs inch closer?

Amundson is a defensive minded player that won’t be useless to the Bulls, as there is a whole in the interior defense due to the absence of the injured Taj Gibson. However, the signing of Amundson doesn’t appeal to the Bulls primary needs, which is scoring. The Bulls are among the league’s worst in scoring, averaging just around the 92.6 points per game mark. Their inability to score is mainly due to their star point guard, Derrick Rose being injured.

To date the Bulls are among the league leaders on defense, which makes this signing even more mind boggling, as they already have players like Noah and Deng who are reliable defensive minded players that also contribute on offense. As the playoffs come into sight, the Bulls did not need to address their defensive side, but add some scoring to the lineup, as there are many Eastern Conference teams that are in a playoff position that can score.

So who could the Bulls went after instead of a pure defensive minded player like Amundson?

Two players come to mind, their veterans, have experience and have the ability to score, Tracy McGrady and Gilbert Arenas. Now both players have played in China this season and both had respectable campaigns, as McGrady averaged nearly 25 points per game while Arenas averaged 20 per game. Of course, defense is a must in the NBA, especially going into the playoffs, however the Bulls are a top team on defense and lack offense. Posting low offensive numbers in the playoffs, especially when going up against teams like Miami and New York, will not fare well, and will most likely exit the playoffs in a hurry.

GM Gar Forman should have explored these options, as either one, Arenas or McGrady would have provided a spark for the team and helped fill a void left by the Derrick Rose injury.

Raptors vs. Wizards Post Game Analysis

Wednesday nights match up between the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers was a crucial game for the Raptors, as they found themselves only five games back of the Milwaukee Bucks and that all important eight and final playoff spot in the east. However, the Raptors couldn't take advantage of a game that worked in their favor, as the Cavs are below the Raps in the standings and were without Kyrie Irving. Despite a deflated team the Cavs, managed to overcome a slow start to the game, and handed the Raptors their first road loss in February. The Raptors got of to a great start, leading the Cavaliers by 13 early in the game, and had huge contributions from players like DeRozan and Rudy Gay. However, their bench didn't show up tonight only chipping in 8 points, which ultimately hurt the Raptors and lead to a loss. A key point in tonight's game was towards the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth, as the Raptors had worked hard to cut into the Cavs lead and trailed by a mere two points with less than 3 minutes in the third. After chipping away at the Cavs lead the Raps went cold for about 6 minutes and fell behind again and found themselves down by 13 with 9 minutes left in the fourth. This hurt the Raptors, as they were not able to find their game, and produce key stops at the right times. The Bucks were also in action tonight, taking on Houston, and were able to knock of the Rockets 110-107, which means that they now move to 6 games ahead of the Raptors in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors will try an rebound from tonight's game, as they head home to face the Pacers on Friday night.

Raptors vs Wizards Preview

The Toronto Raptors head to Washington, to take on the Wizards tonight at 8 p.m. and look to extend their winning streak to five games. The Raptors headed into the All Star break last week winners of their last four games, and are five and two since acquiring small forward Rudy Gay. The Raps look to make a second half playoff push, and are currently six games behind the eight spot holders the Milwaukee Bucks. Tonight the Raptors face a Wizards team that has been playing some pretty good ball since the return of point guard John Wall, as they are 10-8 since his return from his long injury absence. Wall has given the Wizards a major boost since returning from injury and his averaging almost 16 points and 8.6 assists, and will look to lead the Wizards past the Raptors tonight. For the Raptors, look for Rudy Gay to have another big game, he grew up in Baltimore and played high school basketball about an hour away from the Verizon Center. Rudy did struggle in his last game before the break, going 4-21, and the All Star Break served as a good break for him. John Lucas has been a pleasant surprise for the Raptors, since the major deal, and will look to continue his dominance off the bench. The Raptors have to take advantage of these games and close out these games early, as these ones are the games that help teams like the Raptors gain ground on teams ahead of them like Milwaukee.

Rudy Gay vs. John Wall

Since returning from injury Wall has put up some bug numbers and has lead the Wizards to play above .500 basketball, while averaging almost 16 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds. His presence on the floor and skills will definitely give the Raptors trouble tonight. Rudy Gay on the other hand, since coming to Toronto has also given the team a major boost, hitting two game winning shots, leading the team to a 5-2 record since his arrival, and putting the Raptors back in the playoff picture. Look for Rudy to have a rebound game from his disappointing offensive production the game before the All Star break.

PROBABLE STARTERS

Toronto: Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Amir Johnson, Jonas Valanciunas.

Washington: John Wall, Garrett Temple, Martell Webster, Nene, Emeka Okafor.

Betting Predictions

For tonight's game I would leave the over/under and focus more the money line, by choosing the Toronto Raptors to win the game, as they have to take advantage of these types of games to gain ground on Milwaukee. I would also take the Raptors to cover the spread tonight which is 3, as they will most likely take the game by 7 or more.

Terrence Ross Wins Dunk Contest

Saturday nights events of the All Star weekend in Houston, were centered around the skills competition, and the Raptors had one member, in rookie Terrence Ross representing their team in the dunk competition. Ross has shown throughout the year that he has flare, hops and the ability to throw down some eye opening dunks. Judges on hand for the competition, were some new faces that included, Dikembe Mutumbo and Yao Ming. Other competitors in the slam dunk contest, included, Jeremy Evans of Utah, Gerald Green of Indiana, James White of New York, Kenneth Faried and LA Clippers Eric Bledsoe. The dunk contest had two competitions in it, east vs. west and an individual winner. The east came on strong in the first round scoring two 50 point dunks, from Ross and Green, however, it appeared they peaked too early as with the exception for Ross who scored two 50 point dunks in three rounds the rest of the east players did not fair as well and ended up losing to the west, who had superb dunks in the last two rounds. For the individual winner it came down to a final between the Raptors rookie in Terrence Ross, against Utah's Jeremy Evans. Evans final dunk was one where he jumped over a painting he created and did a windmill dunk. Ross also used props for his final dunk, as he used one of the ball boys to jump over, put the ball through his legs and threw down a powerful dunk. Ross easily edged out Evan to win the contest, garnering 58 percent of the vote.

Perhaps a more memorable moment from the dunk contest was when Ross paid tribute to former Raptor Vince Carter by wearing his jersey, during his third dunk in round one. Overall, the dunk contest was exciting, and more importantly for Raptors fans a Raptors member won it, as Terrence Ross, showed consistency and dunk difficulty throughout all of his dunks, which might not be said about all of the other dunks.

Raptors Trade Rumors

As the trade deadline approaches on the 21 of February, the Toronto Raptors and more importantly Andrea Bargnani has subject to many trade rumors. Recent reports suggest that the Raptors are close to completing another deal with the Chicago Bulls. Indications suggest that former first round pick Andrea Bragnani and John Lucas of the Raptors would be shipped to Chicago in return for veteran Carlos Boozer and former dunk winner Nate Robinson. Reports are suggesting that this is the offer Chicago has laid on the table and the Raptors just have to give the okay for the deal to be completed. From a Raptors perspective this deal dramatically improves their team, in terms of offense and defense. Boozer would not only give them much needed help on the boards, but would provide scoring from the paint, which is something the Raptors have lacked this season. Nate Robinson would mostly likely come of the bench if traded to the Raptors, and would give the Raptors a quick paced point guard that can help not only score but distribute the ball well. In terms of Andrea Bargnani, he has showed moments of star quality throughout his career, but most of his time in Toronto has been subject to underachieving. As of right now , and in terms of the direction the team is heading in, Andrea Bargnani is not a player that fits in well with team. He has been knocked for his defensive abilities, and plays for a coach that is defensive minded. His abilities would better fit with a team like Chicago, as they need player who could score, distribute the ball and provide another threat on offense.

These are only reports and rumors for now, but it will be interesting to see if a deal is completed before the deadline expires.

All Star Dunk Competition

The NBA season has reached its half way point, and the All Star festivities have taken center stage, this weekend in Houston. The weekend is surrounded by the leagues top talent ranging from veterans, to up and coming stars. Saturday's event relates to the skills of players with contests like the dunk competition and 3 point shooting competition, and Sunday centers around the east vs. west game. Terrence Ross of the Toronto Raptors will be participating in the dunk competition on Saturday and the rookie seems quite excited about showcasing his skills in front of an international audience. Toronto has been producing players for years, that have the skills and capabilities to produce mouth dropping dunks, from Vince Carter, to DeMar DeRozan and now rookie Terrence Ross. Ross in his rookie campaign has shown flare, quick pace and strong development, and has continued to surprise Raptors fans with his ability to hit shots from all over the court and produce exciting dunks. Terrence Ross has been working hand in hand with team mate DeRozan to gain advice and insight on tweaking and developing some of his potential dunks that he will showcase during the competition. Tonight look for Ross to surprise the crowd with some unusual never seen before dunks and potentially shocking the NBA universe with a win tonight.

Raptors Getting Help From Unlikely Sources

The Toronto Raptors have been on a roll as of late, winning their last four games heading into the All Star break. It appears, that the Raptors have enjoyed the acquisition of small forward Rudy Gay, as since he has arrived the Raptors are five and two and have taken a lead into the fourth in every single game since he has arrived. However, the Raptors can not only give credit to their big name players like Rudy Gay, DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, as when they have had games where they haven't shot well, bench players like Alan Anderson and back up point guard John Lucas have stepped up huge and given the Raptors a second threat. Lucas had a huge game against the Nuggets and was clutch especially in the fourth quarter, as the traded baskets with Nuggets right down to the end, and Lucas was crucial as he knocked down shots from of all over the court. Alan Anderson stepped up big against the Knicks, as players like Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan were having cold games. The Knicks game was not a particluar game that the Raptors like to play, it was gritty, rough, and all of contact in the paint, but Anderson seemed to thrive in this type of environment, and was one of the main reasons that the Raptors were allowed to keep the game close and eventually close out the Knicks, despite shooting a low shooting percentage.

Despite being in tenth place, the Raptors have shown over the last little while that they can play with and beat different variety of teams, a high scoring team like Denver, and gritty team like the Knicks, which only suggests that they will be in close contention for the that final playoff spot in the East, which is currently held by Milwaukee. Consistent play from Rudy Gay, improved play from Kyle Lowry and DeMar Derozan, as well as ample scoring from the bench only shows that the Raptors will be a hard team to play against in the second half of the season.

Bargnani Trade Rumors

The former 2006 number 1 first overall draft pick hasn't quite lived up to his potential or the star quality that a number 1 pick brings. Andrea Bargnani may be on his way out of Toronto, and find himself with a fresh start in Chicago, as rumor continue to swirl around the player and his possible destinations before the February 21 trade deadline. Recent rumors have suggested that the Raptors are in negotiations with the Chicago Bulls on a possible deal which would centerpiece around Andrea Bargnani for Carlos Boozer. Now the deal cannot be a straight up deal, as the there would have to be a number of smaller contract or role players added to the deal so that the salary cap math could work.

Bargnani would be a good fit in Chicago, as he would add a much needed dimension to the team, in terms of his ability to shoot from beyond the mark, and trading Boozer would definitely be cost effective, knocking some dollars of the books. Bargnani is coming of a shoulder injury that sidelined him for a couple of months, however the Bulls do need help with scoring and scoring from behind the arc, as they are one of the worst teams in the points per game category.

Boozer is currently shooting the worst percentages of his career, however his play has picked up as of late, and would be an instant help and boost to the Raptors on the boards and defense, as the Raptors are one of the worst rebounding teams in the NBA. The deal would definitely help both teams out, especially Chicago, as Derrick Rose will be returning to the line-up sometime after the All Star game, and would be a great fit for Bargnani. With Rose back and the possiblity of acquiring Bargnani the Bulls, would be able to create more space for Rose to shoot, stretch the play and create more shooting options. Although Bargnani's time in Toronto has been subject to disappointment, he would do better on a team like the Bulls, as they are one of the best defensive teams, and he would be around a more winning team with a stronger supporting cast.

All in all, the deal sounds good for both sides, as Chicago would acquire a layer that can boost their offense, and the Raptors would get a player that could help the on the boards and defense, and really help the team shut down games in the fourth quarter.

Raptors vs. Celtics Preview

Wednesday night's game between the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics, will be a crucial game for the Raptors, as Boston is team they are chasing for the final playoff spot in the east. This is Boston's first trip to Toronto this season and are currently on a four game winning streak, despite having lost their all star point guard, Rajon Rondo to season ending knee injury. Toronto will look to rebound from a second half disappointment on Sunday against Miami, which was dominated by the teams turnovers and inability to score in the second half against a tightened Miami defense. Toronto is now seven and a half games out of the final playoff spot, and will have to put forth more of a complete game for 48 minutes to secure a win and gain ground on Boston. Andrea Bargnani will make his way back into the lineup for the first time since December, after he suffered from an elbow injury. It more than likely that he will come off the bench, which works in the Raptors favor, as they have not got much scoring from their bench over the last couple of games.

Key Match Up
Paul Pierce vs. Rudy Gay
These two players are a couple of high scoring wingers, as Pierce averages about 19 points a game and Rudy Gay has amassed a total of 49 points in his first two Raptors games. Look for Rudy Gay to attract double teams from the Celtics, which will create opportunities for other players like DeRozan, Johnson and Lowry. On the other hand, the Raptors need to carefully guard Pierce, his experience, scoring ability and ability to create open shots for other players, can hurt the Raptors.

The Raptors need to win games against the teams that they are chasing, because it not only allows them to gain ground on those teams, but if at the end of the season, the teams have identical records it would come down to head-to-head match ups.

Betting Lines
Tonight the Raptors are favorite by 3.5 points and the over/under is at 189.5. The Raptors are favorite to win the match, with odds at -155. Look for the Raptors to win this game, as they have to gain ground on Boston, they have fairly decent record at home, they have to rebound from their second half mishaps against Miami on the weekend, and they are welcoming back Andrea Bargnani into the lineup, who will provide them with extra scoring from the bench. I wouldn't touch the over/under in this game, as both teams are unpredictable with scoring, but I would take Toronto to cover the spread, as they should do this easily.

Raptors vs. Heat Post Game Analysis

With a day that is primarily focused on the Superbowl, there was another game that did bring some attention, as Sunday's matinee at the ACC, brought the Miami Heat Heat to town to tangle with Raptors. A familiar face, in Chris Bosh played his third game in Toronto after leaving a couple of years ago to join Wade and Lebron in Miami, and was a key player in the second half for the Heat that lead them to victory.

The Raptors started the game slow, as they found themselves down 10 points with in the first few minuted of the game. However, strong play from the newly acquired Raptor, Rudy Gay, directed and lifted the team to not only comeback in the first quarter but also take the lead into the second quarter and going into the third quarter. Despite strong play from Gay and DeRozan, the Raptors did not get much help from their bench in today's game, as the reserves only pitched in a total of 11 points against the Heat.

The Heat were down going into third quarter, but immediately tightened up their defense and exploded on offense. They forced a number of turn overs at the beginning of the third and took advantage of them, going on an 8-0 run at the beginning of the third. The Heat's big three woke up in the second half, mainly Bosh who was pretty quiet during the first half. The big three, Lebron, Wade, and Bosh combined for a total of 81 points, and appeared to be too much to handle for the Raptors, as they hurt them for from everywhere on the floor.

Despite losing to the Heat today, the Raptors did prove that they were able to stick around with the Heat, and showed their ability to cause them problems, especially in the first half. Rudy Gay continued to show fans his ability on offense, pitching in 29 points, and showed glimpses of his defensive capabilities in the first half when guarding Lebron. DeMar DeRozan has also continued to play well, showing that his slump is long over, as he added in 27 points, and more importantly, drove the lane and got to the line.

The Raptors will have a couple days off and then welcome the Boston Celtics to town, which is an important match-up, as the Celtics are the team that they are chasing for that all important eighth spot. The Celtics will be no easy match-up, as they have won four in a row, even with out their star point guard in Rajon Rondo.

Key Stats

Miami Heat

Chris Bosh- 28 points, 5 rebounds

Lebron James- 30 points, 7 assists, 8 rebounds

Dwayne Wade- 23 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds

Toronto Raptors

Rudy Gay- 29 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists
DeMar DeRozan- 27 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds

Raptors Land Gay

Hours before their game against the Atlanta Hawks, the Toronto Raptors pulled the trigger on a deal that would send Jose Calderon, Ed Davis, a second round pick and cash to Memphis for Rudy Gay and Haddadi.

Landing Gay, the Raptors automatically turn into a better team, as they get a strong minded defensive player and has the ability to be a prolific scorer. Rudy Gay is under contract for two more years in which will pay him about $37 million. While point guard, franchise leader in assists for the Raps, and long time serving Raptor in Jose Calderon is in his contract year and it is a possibility that he will be used in another trade by Memphis to a third team. Ed Davis is still in his rookie contract, and has shown strong progression on both the offensive and defensive ends over the last little while.

Rudy Gay has long been a target for Colangelo and the Raptors, in fact the Raps could have chosen him during the 2006 draft, but chose now injured Andrea Bargnani first overall. What the Raptors are getting in Gay, is a six foot eight small forward that is strong on defense and has the ability to put up high numbers on offense, even though he is currently putting up some of the worst offensive number of his career. Raptors coach Dwayne Casey will have his work cut out for him, in getting his defensive wings DeRozan and Gay in order, as this will be crucial to the success of this deal.

Raptors vs. Hawks Pre-Game Analysis

Tonight the Raptors travel to Atlanta to face a Hawks team that is on a roll, winning their past three out of four games, and averaging a high 108 points per game over the four game period. The Raptors will have to bounce back from a lack luster fourth quarter performance, that cost them the game against Golden State. Historically, the Hawks have dominated the Raptors, especially at home, however over the last moth or so, the Raptors have completely turned around their season and look like a different team. They are still in the playoff hunt, for that final spot and will have to try and snag a win tonight on the road, (as road games are no their forte, hence the 5-14 record), as they than have three games in a row at home.

Key Match-Up
Ed Davis and Josh Smith
Josh Smith has been playing well as of late, and is one of the reasons why the Hawks have been able to score over 105 during their last four games. Smith does take questionable, maybe even mind boggling shots at times, especially some of his three pointers, however, he has been knocking them down as of late, and is not being guarded by a shut down defensive minded player in Landry Fields, so he'll have his shots.
Ed Davis has also been on a roll offensively, and has really stepped up his game while Andrea Bargnani has been sidelined. A key for Davis tonight is to continue his dominance on offence, and play sound defence shutting down Al Horford.

The Raptors have enjoyed the recent play of DeMar DeRozan, as he has broken out of his slump, and tonight they hope much of the same from him. For the Raptors to add a win to their record, they will have to ensure that Hawks shoot a low shooting percentage and score under a 100 points, as the Hawks haven't faired well when scoring less than 100 over the last little while, and previous games show that on the road the Raptors usually score just over 100.

Betting lines for tonight's game shows that Hawks are favorites by 7.5 and the over/under is 175. For me personally, I would scrap the point spread, but choose the over 175, as this game should easily reach this mark.

Golden State vs. Toronto Raptors Pre-Game Analysis

Monday January 28th's, game at the Air Canada Centre will be a tough one for the Toronto Raptors, as the Golden State Warriors come into town trying to snap a two game losing streak. The Warriors are also hoping that Andrew Bogut will be ready to make his return from a nagging ankle injury that has sidelined him for 38 games, as he would be an instant boost to the team and also cause a lot of trouble in the paint against the third worst rebounding team in the NBA, the Toronto Raptors. For the Raptors, tonight will be about trying to beat the mind games that may have cost them the last game against the Cavaliers in the dying seconds. A key player for Toronto will be Alan Anderson, he is probably not your first selection, but over Toronto's last nine home games he is there leading scorer, and has shot well from outside the arch. The Raps have to recognize this and play this to their advantage, as they will need as many points as they can get tonight against a highly talented offensive Golden State Warriors. Terrence Ross will be another key player that the Raptors will to tonight, as his flare, entertainment, and high flying capabilities will serve as confidence and provide spark to a team that maybe lacking some confidence.

Look for tonight to be a high scoring affair, with a fast pace and a lot of entertainment. The Raptors will have to play a sound defensive game and ensure that they make their presence felt in the paint and on the boards, as this will most likely dictate the games winner. The Raptors will also have to focus on shutting down offensive monster Stephen Curry, as the Raptors don't want this kind of player to get on a roll as it can lead to an upward battle for the Raps.

Probable Starters
Golden State: Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes, David Lee, Festus Ezeli; Toronto: Jose Calderon, DeMar DeRozan, Landry Fields, Ed Davis, Amir Johnson.

Also, Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry has been suffering from an irritating back injury and is a game tine decision, so look forward to Jose Calderon taking the lead.

Point Spread: Raptors +2.5
Over/ Under- 202.5
