									<title>That Summer 2014 Feeling</title>
<itunes:subtitle>Starting off on the funky, jazzy side, with a dash of positive reggae vibes, but we do get to rock out in this set before mellowing out.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>1) Luvmenauts - Dr. Yeah Buddy
2) House of David Gang - Good to be Loved (3:00)
3) The BelleRegards - Nothing to Lose (6:24)
4) Jazz Money - Softly As In A Morning Sunrise (9:50)
5) Animalia - See (12:22)
6) Combo Royale - No.28 (15:34)
7) d-Orbital - Oppenheimer (9:10)
8) Jackets - Ain't no people (23:36)
9) Mother Tareka and The Greezy Steez - City Breathin' (UFOs Greezmix) (26:50)
10) Union - Teenage (29:43)
11) Jim Dan Dee - Borrowed Time (33:19)
12) Earth's Yellow Sun - We're not supposed to be here (35:24)
13) Bondi - Waves (40:03)
14) Peirson - Outta My Mind (45:27)
15) Steve John Dale Quartet - Imotation (49:44)
16) LadyFace -The Lighthouse (54:44)
17) Julie Arsenault - Mr.Golden Sun (57:54)

I'm impressed when a band doesn't use excessive compression these days. Jackets, I'm looking at you, y'all sound like you're coming out of 'The Band' era of rock and I dig it. Had to include you even though you're slightly out of town. Mother Tareka, love the grooves, the poetry and the subject matter you take on. Luvmenauts, I'd like to have you explain more about the artistic process that led you to the setting music to old movies thing you are doing, but I do know y'all made some funky-ass tunes that are damn fine listening on their own. Combo Royale, Wow, that's some mesmerizing out of this world stuff. Union y'all are obviously young, the sound is raw, but I like it in a velvet underground sort of way. Particularly, the way it changes it up at the end. Excited to see where y'all go together. House of David Righteous truth. Y'all make this man feel good. Earth's Yellow Sun, congrats, the odds were against you, I can't remember the last time I included something metal on this podcast. Take some composition wizardry to seamlessly blend a sax solo into this kind of music. Respect. Julie Arsenault Beautiful and gritty. The simple sublime of the everyday is exactly what folk is all about. Pierson you're gonna make some people cry as they remember all these things. Song sounds like a gentle dream so we'll enjoy the tears. Jazz Money this is the kind of jazz I love. The strong beat, a slick bass line, upbeat melodies, and the whole thing oozing with a dopeness that bobs heads.

Virtual music is all well and good, but do get out and see the musicians work their magic live. Here's a few plugs from the featured artists:

"Also if you can mention our upcoming show at cherry colas on June 27th with superstack and the marwills that would be great." - Jim Dan Dee

"We're playing a show with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 on July 12...it's going
to be a groovy time. Here's a link to the event" - The Luvmenauts (Andrew)

For those with cash we're entering a season of festivness, indulgence and gift buying, but for those who don't it's some of the longest, darkest days of the year. At the same time it also seems to be when folks are feeling the most charitable and generous... even towards those they don't know. If you're looking to help those in need or just want to check out some great live music and painting go to the Feed it Forward event at the Drake Wednesday December 12th.

A furious wind certainly blew the leaves off the trees in a hurry this year. I walk carefully through these fallow streets with my head still clearing from the visions of summer. The air is wet, the sky is dark and the plastic poppies are blooming. It's obvious change is descending upon us and the season of death is here.
Stephen Jenkinson, as the leader of a palliative care counselling team at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital, has been at the deathbed of well over 1,000 people. On his web site he writes:
&quot;A good dying is nothing less than cultural subversion. Advocating for, providing for, pursuing good dying for ourselves and for those we love is a political and a spiritual project. It is an act of love and of revolution.&quot;
Stephen also says we live in a death phobic culture, so this probably all sounds a bit overwhelming. But I challenge you to see to what extent you can subvert this cultural fear just a little bit. Is there a part of yourself that you are clinging too even though it's purpose has clearly been served? make some time to properly grieve this part of your old self, and then make s point of embracing something more appropriate for the person you have become.
Take some inspiration from the musicians. For example Hugh Oliver is still doing new things in his 80's and there's the Reluctant cogs, who've put effort into stepping outside the musical norms, took the time to listen to each other in new ways and learned to speak a delicate and unique musical language. </itunes:summary>

It'd be nice to have rhyme with the reason, but sometimes I'm happy to settle for one of the two.
There's so much random and inexplicable sensory stimulus, and sometimes it's powerful enough for us to forget to ask what it means.
Then there's the occasional thread you pull on and the coincidences pile up so high that you can't help but muse on the significance of how it all connects.
When everything unravels and pain pours out it helps to at least know why. When all is well and smooth you feel you risk missing something if you stop and try to understand it all too.
Yet there is a pleasure in pointing out patterns and being confident about how the next things will go, and there is so much sweet relief to be had in escaping to the land of magic and forgetting what you think you know.
Oh, where does one go to find rhymes for their reasons, or reasons for their rhymes?
If I don't move, if I don't make it chase me, will that make it easier? Should I just let them find me in their own time?

Was feeling like entering the territory of the sacred for this mix. I was quickly made aware of the high danger of cliches, taking things too seriously and predictable cheese as I wondered how one finds the spiritual. Of course I didn't reach any hard conclusions, the music mix simply represents an appreciation of the multi-fold paths available. There are those finding the sacred in solitude, in connecting with the spirit of the ancestors, in looking up at the stars, in a shared community experience, in consoling a friend, in dancing with the end of the world, in the abstract, in raising the next generation, in everything that exists and in nothingness. In some cases I just went with the songs that found me, or picked from among those who self-identified with the theme. So I guess I'm admitting I've tried to find something sacred in the process of blending these varied voices together in this podcast, but everything else is up to you. In a land where all are visitors it's hard to rely on a tour guide, but the perspective of each visitor is infinitely valuable.

A few weeks ago I met a man who kept saying 'music is for the soul' while the band played. I knew what he meant and I wasn't really sure at the same time. For now I'm going to interpret it as a simple expression of the magic medicinal powers of music to transform the ugly truths of pain, heartache and anger into a force that soothes, consoles and uplifts. Gold's got nothing on that kind of alchemy. Music is for the soul. Music is for the soul.
There's a few items of note from the artists:
Charlie Bobus, founder of Inspirator International, is hoping to transform some of his album sales into a poetry lounge and youth Centre in Jamaica. You can help him out here.

Eastborough is trying to transform online votes into a spot on the Late Show. You can help her out here.
In case you missed it the 510 was transformed back to the Spadina Bus a little while ago:

Been looking back on the ambitions and accomplishments of my life with a curious wonder. Was it worth it? All the time and effort spent on things that don't seem so important now? As I look at the dreams that make me nervous but which I want to chase today I wonder if they'll be worth the risk. As I log off to contemplate these things some more I'll leave you with a comic from XKCD.com

Freeman Dre's beauty track is off his new album which drops July 19th at 9pm. Join him and the Kitchen Party at the horseshoe for the release. It's a touching concept album, on which Dre applies his lyrical wizardry to telling the tale of multiple generations of a family history.

For the artists listening out there. Pay special attention to m/b's track. If you're looking for live music at your art shows m/b would be glad to help you out.

On a final note, I wonder how many people can identify the Toronto locations in Andrew Huang's video?

A: Ran in to Tess on the way here.
B: I miss Tess, I haven't seen her in ages. What's she up to?
 A: She told me times were getting tough. It's hard to ask what someone's been doing when you know they've been out of work for a while. So I didn't, but she smiled, read my mind, and said &quot;You know the funny thing about being time rich is: you have time to think about how what you got is too valuable to spend all in one place.&quot;
B: She always had that weird way of finding humour in the darkness.
A: She's gotten comfortable there.
B: I don't know if she's comfortable. But it's almost like a spiritual thing.
A: Tess! Are you serious?
B: Just something about her attitude, the way she moves and the look in her eye. Like she's made a deal with some higher power.
A: The whole midnight standing out at some crossroads somewhere?
B: Maybe 'deal' is the wrong word. It's more of an understanding. Like she's stared into the dark long enough that she knows it's light side, she's come to terms with something normal people are terrified of.
A: Mmhhm. I call it an unwavering charm. It's become even more prominent since the accident. She asked me to give you this mixtape.
B: The metaphor mixtape. Right on! Gotta love her

A: Read the note.
B: "Sorry it's been so long. Lately I've been feeling all of life's a song. When the melody is distand it's important to keep the rhythm strong. When things are out of step with the truth of your heart than everything is bound to fall apart. So I've been practicing without distractions, making sure I know my part. Can't believe it's already June. We need to get together soon. Till then, here's a few tunes I've been listening to.

This podcast is music for love reconsidered. At the moment some friends are thinking twice about their relationships, many of my own relationships in the past have ended at around this time of year, and I just happened to receive many submissions speaking to this theme this month. So here we are in Spring, the Winter has left us at our weakest, we've been cooped up in tight quarters for months and we're perhaps a little more sullen or irritable than normal. All these factors may very well be making our relationships a bit more strenuous than they would otherwise be. It might be the proof you need that a relationship should come to an end or perhaps it's just a typical time of year to be going through an emotional valley and you should remain optimistic about the peaks that are surely coming. But how do you know?
In 'Hard Against The Soul' Toronto's Poet Laureate Dionne Brand writes:
hearing finally all the words that passed you like air,
like so much fun, or all the words that must have
existed while you were listening to others. What

would I want with this sentence you say flinging it

  aside...
As you reflect on the state of your relationships this spring, take this podcast as a collection of new words and sounds to try on. See if they fit, inspire, heal, or if you'd prefer, fling them aside.
For further listening I highly recommend checking out the Art Imperials new 'break up' album in full. Their Cult of Love attempts to &quot;forge empathetic bonds with the listener that expose the universal feeling of heartbreak; to show, in answer to Al Green's famous question, that above all else music remains the best cure to mend a broken heart.&quot; It is a solid piece of musicianship for start to end. Each track on there is an excellent piece of work.

There is a unique magic in those first warm days of spring when it seems everyone has left their caves. There is a certain lightness and relief in the air, you bump into friends you haven't seen in months and meet friends you've never seen before. These are the sort of feelings I've had in mind while putting this podcast together. Hope you're taking a moment to smell the freshly blooming flowers.</itunes:summary>

A few interesting notes about the music in this podcast:
Duane Forrest uses music to fund social activist projects he is a part of. He currently has a school of the Arts in Copan, Honduras called Genesis.
K-Sieze is all of 16 years old, his song is a response the 'Whats goin on..' video that went viral a little while ago:

The song by Solvent comes from an album entirely composed on a &quot;Yamaha CS5 monosynth, having been owned by Richard D James (Aphex Twin)&quot;
Hope you enjoy this mix. I realized I've been doing this podcast for twelve months now. With it being New Years it was tempting to do a 'best of' mix, but I had already received so many new songs that I thought it would be better to let 2011 go and start 2012 fresh.</itunes:summary>

The days may be getting shorter but with so much great music around me this month the podcast got longer. I went to a potluck/concert featuring Bob Wiseman. He makes a some damn tasty potatoes and sent me an early mix of a new song for the podcast. 'More Perverse Is' features a handful of notable guest artists including Richard Underhill and Serena Ryder. The lyrics speak directly to the political/media landscape we live in and the music is full of fun and surprises. I had the good luck to catch Eddy, a beat-boxing poet, perform at FOOL. His performance touched us all. If you want to learn to beat-box he is the man to talk to. I learned about Entire Cities by way of a performance at Placebo Space(One of my favourite venues). I Immediately fall in love with their sublime mellow sound. lightsweetcrude, long time favourites of ours at the TSG podcast, held a great album release show. Their music is extremly tight and will transport you to other worlds. They are playing a show Tonight(Nov. 17) and are well worth seeing live.

We have a few artists from Pinwheel Music is this episode. They are newly established but already represent some very eminent musicians including inimitable imaginator John Southworth. John is ramping up for a big year in 2012: he has a record, a cabaret show and a children's book in the bag. On tour in December to promote his latest offering, Human Cry.

Souljazz innovator Elizabeth Shepherd records an album of obscure jazz standards, breathing life - and soul - into forgotten songs. Rewind in stores March 2012. Globetrotting ukulele songstress Shelley O'Brien's brand new album Vivarium is a gorgeous love letter to Canada, canoeing and caribou.
Rootsy tunesmith Daniel Sky goes on a Traveling Wilburys trip with the help of Derek Downham (Beauties, Elliot Brood, Sarah Slean) on new record Spider Milk. After hearing the beautiful poem AfraKaren contributed to Ian Kamau's track in the last episode I had to seek out more from her. In anticipation of Seaforth, 1977 released So is the Sea yesterday. The Holy Gasp also has a recently released album with hand drum driven songs supporting the lyrics of a passionate and imaginative poet.

Drumhand lays down some intricate rhythms and lucious vocals. Eternia knows hip hop. I'm impressed with her solid flow. I've been meaning to get Elos Arma's smooth pop sound into the podcast for months. I hope they'll forgive me for the delay. Mr. Marbelz though their song might be too long for me. It's an epic track and I love the journey it takes you on, so I'm sure you'll be happy to take that ride too. Welldone Productions and Sickids both showing their prowess at laying down seriously slick beats. The junction Trio brings some fresh ideas and unexpected twists to a classic old tune. Bruce Peninsula has released there much awaited new album last month after their front man's recovery from leukimia. They're bringing their unique sound to venues all over Ontario this month.

As far as music goes hip hop was my first true love. It was the first cassette I ever bought, the first concert I ever went to. I loved the story telling, the word play, the exuberant self-expression, the dancing, people laying down their politics. I'd sample songs and scratch records in my parents basement while friends freestyled. Then at some point in the middle 90's I grew a little bored with the rap I was hearing around me. It took a bit of a back seat to the other music I had started exploring. However, my early romance with hip hop has undoubtedly influenced my musical tastes in genereal. I'm a sucker for songs of any genre with clever lyrics, or boomin poly-rhythms. It's lead me to explore Toronto's poetry scene and to play the djembe. This music runs deep
through the city, lyrics flow through our blood and our hearts are full of beats. As I started exploring Toronto's hip hop scene in earnest once again over the past year, I've been very happy to find a renaissance occurring of the kind of hip hop I love. The diversity of ways by which todays artists are approaching the art form has left me impressed. As two albums of straight up artistic brilliance(by Kamau and Kuda) have been released this month, I thought this would be the ideal time to celebrate Toronto hip hop love. Many of these artists have free/pwyc albums available for download. Many of these artists are involved in some interesting projects in the community. Follow their links and get to know them.

For October I thought I'd try shorter but more frequent episodes of the TSG podcast. For the first instalment I'm very excited to present another powerful foot stomping tune from Nicole Christian that is perfect this time of year, as we head into harvest festivities. Patti Cake Displays her fine mix of whimsy and amazing soulful vocal prowess on this rocker. At Nuit Blanche this year I came across a group of passionate Gameboy music composers in front of city hall. I was impressed and so were many others. They had attracted a good sized crowd of really talented joyful dancers. jefftheworld the organizer of the event has a number of his songs available for free under a Creative Commons license. Lal makes some very subtle yet sublime music. I really can't get enough of them. Planet Earth is one of the first bands I saw live in Toronto. Their sweet smooth funky sounds haven't really been matched by anyone else since. Thomas and Saint Dirt Elementary School have both just released new albums on Toronto's Barn Yard Records. For some reason I wasn't sure Saint Dirt was ever going to release more material. Very glad to hear some more wonderful, wacky and original pieces from the group that introduced me to the melodica.Thomas brings us a delicately blended mix of the unexpected and familiar on Either Side of the Symbol. In my books that's the recipe for a hit song. I don't think anyone has better articulated the bottled water phenomenon than evalyn parry. Hopefully you're already following her advice. The Bare Minimum lay down some kick ass catchy guitar licks.

She Rides comes from Spin, evalyn parry's theatrical multimedia musical which makes heavy use of a bicycle as a musical instrument and looks at the bike as an instrument in the history of woman's liberation. It's definitely worth seeing live, let's hope it will be staged again in Toronto. In the meantime you can see excerpts of Spin and other performances here. Red Slam Collective is another a great multi-sensory experience to see live. They bring the spirit of indigenous oral traditions to contemporary poetry and hip-hop performance. They've just released a very impressive first EP this past spring entitled Serpent Skin. Amai Kuda et Les Bois should be releasing her first album any moment. Every track I can find by her suggests she's got the talent of a superstar. Her voice is wonderful, the beats are fresh, there's wisdom in the lyrics and it seems like it's all been put together with a certain dash of magic. She's got a great video for All My Fine Shoes. Vidian is my favorite artist on CCMixter. He prolifically produces great tracks using Creative Commons samples. I've played some of his songs here before but there's just so many I haven't had the change to play. Visiting his page for free downloads is definitely worth the trip. Giacomo Cataldo is a Toronto based composer the SACD just came out in late July but the world concert premiere was performed in the Czech Republic. We're hoping to see some live performances in Toronto in the near future. Maria Kasstan well known in the city for her work with Seeds of diversity and the Toronto Beekeepers Co-op has released a soul touching album titled Gamma Knife this past summer. The album pays homage to life with her partner who's life ended a little too soon in front of a Toronto police station. The album is full of wit, wisdom, joy, garden imagery as well as the sorrow surrounding her loss. You can read more about her story and watch a video performance in this Star article you can preview and buy Gamma Knife here. The James Clark Institute knows pop music. By filling his songs with complex, mysterious and personal he brings pop music to wear it sounds best. I stumbled across Cai.ro on the web and simply couldn't get their catchy melodies out of my head. Ian Kamau had his poetry featured on Shad's album a few years back, released a series of mixtapes that furthered my belief this man is someone to pay attention to. His first album is set for release in October, the preview track shows every indication that he is going to live up to my great expectations. Dave Borins brings us his sweet pop sound. Nicole Christian does the blues right, with the classic twang sound well matched to a formidable and fun rhythm section. Saidah Baba Talibah hits us with some more high energy soul on the track I've featured here. But this girl is dynamic to say the least. Her recently released album demonstrates an impressive range as a musician and deserves to be listened to in full. Donlands and Mortimer were ambitious with Dreaming Songs. It's a finely crafted reminder of the need to look for love, full of quick tempo changes and dreamy atmosphere. I came across MC Fubb through his involvement with The Cypher. It's the mature and thoughtful voice of a community organizer that we find on this track. Lisa Bo...</itunes:summary>

14) Jumple - You &amp; me (51:00)
From back to front: Jumple brings some out high energy Balkan Beats that will have you ready for the dance floor. Patti Cake takes you to a new world with the aptly titled EP &quot; The Prime Minister of Cool Chicks&quot;. It sounds a bit like the 50's but it also sounds damn cool right now. With Lucky Number 7, The Machams have nailed the light, joyful, bouncing sound that takes serious skill to balance just right. Freedom of Death, smooth, laid back and intensely sweet. Dr. Draw is famous for playing the electric violin. The song has got wicked mellow groove but isn't afraid to rock you with a dose of dramatic energy too. If you don't know and love Samba Squad by now something is wrong. You should get to now TrisLaw, it takes some kind of genius to pull something like this off. Heartbeat Hotel is a bright fresh summer day surprise with a big cherry on top. Nhapitapi Mbira has the deep delicate beauty of a snow flake but with a warmth that will melt your heart. Chloe Charles is simply sublime. You can never cross the same stream twice and Static North's songs will flow over you ears time and time again. Download the free EP here and put it on repeat. Marc tells me &quot; The song is called 'Piv' (pronounced PIE - VAH). The chorus Paivaa is Finnish and it's means 'have a great day'&quot;. His dreamy ethereal voice on Piv leaves me marvelling. Aline Morales who you may have seen parading around Toronto with Baque de Bamba has just released her debut album. She ain't messing around, it's evident there is a true artist at work on this album. Saidah Baba Talibah is one hell of a butterfly rawking on the soul. One song will leave you hungry for another. No wonder she was able to fund her new album with pre-investing fans.

Summer seems to have truly finally arrived and a whole lot of love seems to have come with it. The submissions I received speak to the love theme in various ways, be it a love of: community, the spiritual, seizing the day, making the world a better place, the love of a martyr or of parents, but above all romantic love is in the air. This fact is probably best exemplified by the album I received from Enio written specifically for his partner as a wedding gift. Look for that album to be released July 5th 2011. Inspired by his gesture I'd like to dedicate this podcast to the love of my life, thanks for all the light you've brought bursting into my life this past year.</itunes:summary>

I keep considering doing more genre specific mixes but in the end I keep deciding I like all kinds of music and I don't want to music to be segregated like that. This mix was lot's of fun to put together. It was a pleasure listening to one of the worlds great harmonica players, discovering a guitar genius, floating away with a string quartet and pondering the words of the poignant lyricists. I enjoyed the challenge of fitting these very different styles of music together while trying to maintain a cohesive feeling to the overall mix. I'm calling this mix sign of the times. I've tried to capture a bit of what I see going on around me and what I'm feeling from being in Toronto right now. Let me know how well you think I did and how it's matching up with your experience of the city. I also recommend reading featured artist Ian Kamau's note on The Mixtape Tradition.</itunes:summary>

I sent the call out for music to a broader range of music sites and Toronto responded with force. Thanks to many artists submitting I was able to put together an hour and a half of music and still have a number of tracks that I will save for future episodes.

A theme that commonly came up while putting this together is the here and now. Making full use of the present, letting go of the past, enjoying your favourite things and accepting change. I've found these songs to be a fine soundtrack to the season of rebirth. Hopefully this mix will fit in with your spring as well.
Please follow the links to support these artists who are working their butts off to make the Toronto music scene something amazing.</itunes:summary>

									<title>Exploring the creative commons</title>
<itunes:subtitle>For this episode I wanted to see what Torontonians are doing in the creative commons. Turns our their is some exciting things happening in the world of free music.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>For this episode I wanted to see what Torontonians are doing in the creative commons. There are a few variations on the theme, but generally speaking the different creative commons licenses are used to freely share work so long as credit is given. Getting in touch with musicians was the most difficult part of putting together the first episode of this podcast, so music that already had the permissions needed for me to share it seemed attractive. But how would the quality of the music compare?
It was exciting to see that the pool of content had rapidly expanded in the Commons since last I explored them and that a couple of high quality sites promoting CC music had come into existence. A few quick searches on CCmixter, Jamendo, Archive.org's netlabels and I knew I'd be able to put together an excellent mix of music. In particular Vidian's epic 'Exploring With Color' stood out. It's playful and earnest, witty and funky; a sonic manifesto in support of using the commons. With its long list of collaborators, it is a vivid glimpse into the potential for creation that the Creative Commons allows.
Outside of the Commons I received some great submissions including lightsweetcrude's stunning track mixing Raga elements with a western jam band aesthetic. I asked Test Their Logik for permission to play their music. They first released their album for free, without any particular license, on crimethinc with the hopes of receiving donations to help pay legal fees when they were arrested prior to the G20 in response to their crash the meeting music video. The song I've featured here is uplifting, optimistic and speaks of beauty on a spiritual level. They are currently on a nation-wide tour. Look for them in Toronto June 9th.
1. Sanderson Dear - In Between The Raindrops
2. Vidian - Exploring With Color
3. Steve Chatterton - Fireflies
4. lightsweetcrude - Kaafi Funk
5. plastic flesh - talk
6. Test Their Logik - Who Are We
7. Southwild - Fonkey Monkey
8. Nomadic Sound Division - Squid Sandwich
9. Arkana Music - Through Sacco's Eyes
10. Michael Holt - Trees
11. Mr. Tunes - Don't Sleep
Putting this episode together was good fun and I'm going to pay more attention to CC music culture and participate in it more fully. The first step? Opening an account at CCmixter.org and starting to upload stems of my personal audio recordings.
This podcast is published as a collective work. Each song is made available under it's original license. </itunes:summary>
