The hip-hop legends of Public Enemy just released a BitTorrent bundle.

The group shares the new single “Get Up Stand Up” for free and more music can be “unlocked” by sharing an email address.

While these BitTorrent bundles are nothing new, the Public Enemy is more creative than most of the previous promo campaigns we’ve seen.

In addition to sharing music for free, the group also invited the public to share remixes via BitTorrent’s SoShare.

Needless to say, creativity will be rewarded.

The best remix will be released by Public Enemy and the runners-up will receive prizes ranging from Public enemy merch to equipment from Blue Mics and Native Instruments.

All the details on the remix competition can be found here.

After years of negotiating and planning the “six strikes” copyright alert system finally saw the light in February.

While repeat copyright infringers will be punished, in the media the Center for Copyright Information” (CCI) mostly highlights the educational nature on the system.

One of the main goals, they say, is to point alleged pirates towards places where they can download and stream content legally.

To achieve this, all Internet providers point recipients of the copyright alerts to the CCI website where links to MPAA and RIAA approved sites are listed.

Or should we say were listed?

After some updates to the CCI website, the original page with legal alternatives has been removed. Those who click on the shiny “how do I find the movies and music I want legally” banner will get a 404 notice.

Legal options 404 (click to enlarge)

The link that’s no longer available is also included in the Comcast copyright alert, which we assume hasn’t been updated either.

For those who are interested, the new alternatives page can be accessed here.

Perhaps a redirect is in place? Or is education the public not that important after all?

“The name you provided on your Google+ page, Kim Dotcom, does not look like a name,” Google informed Dotcom.

The company suspects that Dotcom is a pseudonym or a business name instead.

If Mega’s founder doesn’t clarify his unusual name within 4 days Google+ says his account will be suspended.

Perhaps he should tell the Google+ team to Google his name?

In an interview with Computer and Video Games, Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto says that his company is more concerned about piracy than the used games market, despite earning revenue from neither.

There can be no doubt that when it comes to video games Shigeru Miyamoto is nothing less than a legend.

The 60-year-old has some of history’s most iconic games and characters under his belt including Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda. To some he is greatest game designer of all time.

Speaking at this week’s E3 gaming expo in Los Angeles, Miyamoto told CVG how his company views the illegal market versus the market for used games, neither of which produce revenue for Nintendo.

“For us it’s less about used games and it’s really more illegal copying of games that we’re really worried about. By creating the games that we create and selling those games, it enables us to then create new versions of those games,” Miyamoto said.

“We’re more worried about piracy and we think used games are a whole other story,” he continued.

“In fact, from our perspective you want to create a game that people will want to keep and keep playing for a long time. That’s the approach that we always take and that’s the best way to avoid used games.”

That’s the nail on the head right there.

As all readers should know by now, BitTorrent activity is public and can be easily logged by outsiders. But what if someone on your own network, at home or at work, is doing the spying?

In this interesting video we see the basics of how someone with access to a network can monitor the activities of all users by using the free open source analysis software WireShark.

The tool looks complicated to begin with but with a little perseverance we can begin to understand how our torrent clients – and indeed any network enabled software – try to communicate with the outside world.

As always, every second of downtime causes concern to many BitTorrent users.

Every time the site becomes unresponsive some assume that something awful has happened, but this is “usually” not the case.

Those who wonder whether their ISP has started to block access to the site can be ‘assured’ though, the site is down globally.

TorrentFreak contacted the Pirate Bay admins to find out more, but we have yet to hear back from them.

When we find out more about the downtime we will post it here, but it’s safe to assume that it’s caused by either hardware or network issues.

Update: Downtime was because of a DDoS attack, it’s fixed now.

Update: And down again…..

Update: Back!

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom may have to wait until April 2014 before his extradition hearing takes place.

By that time it will be more than two years since the case started.

Kim Dotcom’s extradition hearing was initially scheduled last August, but was delayed until March this year, and then August, because legal arguments on a number of issues complicated the case.

These complications haven’t been solved in recent months which means that the August 2013 date has been scrapped as well.

The extradition hearings are now scheduled to start on November 21, witch April 14 as a backup date in case it has to be delayed further.

As lawsuits and claims for file-sharing settlements become more commonplace, criminals are trying to cash in on the fears of Internet users. This fresh incident from the Middle East looks particularly nasty.

A reader from Kuwait has emailed in to warn of a scam currently targeting Internet users. The message appearing on screens advises that unless a file-sharing related fine is paid, matters will escalate quickly.

“I was busy browsing Facebook and I got a massive Interpol letter on my screen demanding I pay up or face jail time,” he told TorrentFreak.

“I called my Internet service provider and told them what happened and they told me it’s a massive scam, they said they got 14 of the same phone calls during the day.”

The attack appears to come from some kind of malware, so the ISP advised our tipster to restore his PC in the hope that it goes away. They added that if there is ever anything wrong with an account they would telephone or send a text message – unremovable popups would never be used.

In a further sign that the warnings have no substance, no copyrighted works or rightsholders are referenced.

The video below shows the malware in action. Any users affected should be clear on what to do – remove the malware of course, but never, ever pay.

Underground Gamer (UG), a private BitTorrent tracker specialized in pre-2004 game releases, has shut down citing legal problems.

According to information from the site’s IRC chat the all non-essential data was wiped out and what remains was encrypted.

The drastic decision was presumably taken to protect the site’s users and staff.

UG’s Lenk explained in the site’s IRC channel that complaints were made by a copyright watchdog about some of the games that were distributed through UG, including FIFA 98.

According to Lenk the “threats” did not come from any of the game publishers directly.

“Companies don’t care about UG. Copyright watchdogs make it their job though,” Lenk writes.

Underground Gamer specializes in old and rare games across a wide range of platforms. As long as the game or platform is from before 2004 there is a very good chance you’ll find it available on the tracker

TorrentFreak talked to UG member Graham who praised the tracker for its extensive collection of old and rare games, and describes the UG community as the go-to place for retro gamers.

“The forums at UG are well used and a gold mine of information on just about anything to do with retro gaming,” he says.

We tried to get in contact with UG staff but so far without luck. It’s clear that the site has shut down for now, but it’s not the end.

“No, we are not gone,” UG notes.

After Movie2k disappeared earlier this week, with all its mysteries, LetMeWatchThis.ch has become unreachable as well today.

There is no official explanation for the downtime yet but the DNS servers don’t appear to be responding anywhere in the world.

The site disappeared roughly 12 hours ago for most people.

LetMeWatchThis’ former sister domain 1channel.ch is still up and running but the owner previously warned users not to use that because it’s compromised.

When we receive more information this article will be updated.

Update: Letmewatchthis came back online for most people after nearly 24 hours of downtime.

Movie2K, one of the world’s most popular movie streaming portals, disappeared without trace this afternoon.

Update May 31: Here

Following action by the Motion Picture Association, earlier this month the UK High Court ordered local ISPs to block subscriber access to Movie2K.

The censorship effort was quickly circumvented, with existing Pirate Bay proxy services stepping up to unblock the site.

Earlier today, however, all Movie2K proxy services broke down when the Movie2K site itself disappeared from the Internet without warning.

For a while the site began redirecting to Google but now fails to respond in any way.

TorrentFreak contacted the site’s operators hours ago but we have yet to hear back, which is unusual since they are normally quite responsive.

Twitter is alive with rumors that the site has been shut down in a raid, but at this stage there are no credible sources for those claims.

As soon as we hear anything more we’ll post an update here or if the situation is more serious, on our main page in the hours to come.

Anum, co-founder of H33T, one of the largest BitTorrent sites, passed away two weeks ago.

Earlier this year he fell from a second storey window and although he recovered from a deep coma he ultimately was to succumb to his injuries.

“In January anum fell out of a window and caught pneumonia, there was nothing we could do, his lungs died and there was no lung transplant for him,” H33T co-founder Lacadaemon (a blood relative of anum) writes.

Anum designed all the artwork for the popular BitTorrent site and kept on doing so until his last day.

“Anum spent his final day with me designing artwork for a new project. He was quietly brave concerning his end of life decision. His last words were typed on his laptop ‘I am not afraid to die. I am afraid of being alone’” Lacadaemon writes.

The previously unpublished logo below currently prides the H33T site, and was typical of anum’s creativity.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are to all who were close to him.

Lacadaemon shared the following with TorrentFreak in remembrance of anum.

“We are growing up, building history in our sharing culture, lives are being lived, and while we so often celebrate the successes and failures, today we mourn one of our fallen, a front line activist whose work has been seen by tens if not hundreds of millions without any one of them knowing his name. That is how it has to be in this world where it is bankers who do God’s work on earth, greed is good, and sharing a piece of corporate mass-media can get you longer jail time than for violence.”

“We reject the current hegemony, choosing instead alternatives about shared values, freedom and autonomy, creating our own culture based on sharing, co-operation and mutual support. We are united from every land on this planet in a new diaspora by the common belief that knowledge should be free, or taken to its ultimate conclusion: education is the great equalizer. BitTorrent is our engine, file sharing is our work, for our sins we live incognito, today we remember anum, founding member of H33T, our companion and friend, who on 15 May 2013 died aged 25 ….”

Twitter and Facebook, not to mention the TorrentFreak inbox, are currently alive with complaints that The Pirate Bay has been blocked, taken down, censored or otherwise silenced. Actually the site works perfectly for us but is clearly experiencing a couple of issues.

There’s always panic when people can’t access The Pirate Bay, especially when complaints seem to originate from more than one geographical region.

At the moment TorrentFreak is aware that users in some parts of the United States, Norway, South Korea, Malaysia and Japan are experiencing difficulties getting on the site.

And, adding to the mystery, the operator of ProxyBay.net informs us that traffic originating from Australia has increased 35 times over normal levels in the past few hours.

Despite the panic in some regions, the Pirate Bay is currently accessible in many parts of the world so the site definitely hasn’t been taken down.

What we do know is that yesterday some tweaks were made to the site’s setup so it seems likely that today’s difficulties are related to that. According to tests carried out a few minutes ago, at least one Pirate Bay DNS server is failing to respond.

In the meantime users should find that switching to a proxy should do the trick until the problems are sorted out.

If any further news comes to light, good or bad, we’ll post an update.

As well as being involved with The Pirate Bay, six years ago Gottfrid Svartholm was also an owner of PRQ, one of the most controversial webhosts in the world. PRQ was and still is a company that operates in a niche, playing host to sites and services that due to their nature are often rejected by other more sensitive companies.

PRQ has hosted a range of controversial sites, not least The Pirate Bay, Wikileaks, domains operated by far-right groups and those considered by some to be terrorist-affiliated. If it’s legal in Sweden, PRQ say they will host it – no questions asked.

However, in a 2007 video only recently translated into English by TPB:AFK creator Simon Klose, Gottfrid reveals that while he believes that everyone has a right to their opinions along with an open debate, certain things – even if made legal – would not be welcome at PRQ.

“To fight the phenomena you have to understand the phenomena,” the then 22-year-old explains.

The clip was subbed by TPB-AFK director Simon Klose who blogged it here (press connect to display the links on your phone), and originally appeared on Swedish Television (SVT).

An anti-piracy system present in all official Blu-ray players since 2012 has received a fresh update that detects pirated video and suggests options for users to invest in legal content instead.

The Cinavia anti-piracy system operates via a special type of watermarking that stays resident in a recording despite re-recording, transcoding, compression, or other type of transfer. This means that camcordings of Cinavia-protected first-run movies and unauthorized copies of Blu-ray or DVDs can be detected by Blu-ray players.

The system, a mandatory feature of all Blu-ray players since 2012, has just received a software addition known as Cinavia 3. It operates in a similar fashion to standard Cinavia when it comes to detecting pirate content but also has a trick up its sleeve.

While previously unauthorized content would be simply blocked by a Blu-ray player, with Cinavia 3 viewers are also informed on-screen where they can buy a legitimate copy of the content, whether that be through iTunes or some other digital retailer.

According to a Variety report, it will be the manufacturers of playback devices who get to choose where users are directed to after illicit content is detected – Apple would direct users to iTunes while companies like Samsung might choose Amazon, for example, each taking a cut of sales as they do so.

“The common misconception is you are either a pirate or you’re not,” said Joe Winograd, executive VP and chief technology officer of Cinavia creator, Verance.

“In reality, there are many layers of gray. Research indicates over a third of people watching pirated films are not hardcore techies but responsible, high-performing individuals who believe it is socially acceptable to search for a ‘free’ movie on a search engine.”

Verance hope that when offered a convenient opportunity to obtain quality content at a fair price, former pirates will consider going straight. Let’s see if that’s what they are actually offered when the system goes live.

One of the main reasons why people turn to piracy is the lack of legal alternatives.

This is one of the main reasons why Australia has such high piracy rates for TV-shows, Game of Thrones included.

The Ambassador of the United States of America to Australia recently complained about this “plain theft” by Australians, but recent developments suggests that things are not going to change anytime soon.

Delimiter reports that the Australian pay TV company Foxtel has signed a deal with HBO to become the exclusive provider for the show.

“Under the arrangement pay per view opportunities to see HBO dramas will be possible after the broadcast of the last program in a series,” Foxtel’s spokesperson says.

“However, in the case of season 3 of Game of Thrones and season 6 of True Blood (but not subsequent series of either show) pay per view is possible 24 hours after the broadcast of individual episodes.”

This deal means that Game of Thrones will be pulled from iTunes, and that starting next year fans will have to wait weeks before they can watch it via pay-per-view.

This situation will be comparable to the United States, where recent Game of Thrones episodes can’t be watched without an HBO subscription. Apparently,

It doesn’t take a rocket scientists to predict that the Game of Thrones piracy will shoot up again next year. We’ll certainly keep an eye on it.

Last year an Internet user known as El Nomeo leaked version 3.70 of Sony’s Playstation3 SDK online. Yesterday the man appeared in a UK court and pleaded guilty to charges of copyright infringement. He’ll be sentenced next month.

“I’ve always wanted to give something back to the community and here it is,” declared El Nomeo in January 2012 after leaking Sony’s PhyreEngine online.

“SDK 3.70 will be uploaded soon, having troubles with my connection!”

SDK stands for software development kit and describe tools used to create applications on a particular platform, in this case Sony’s Playstation3 gaming console.

The leak of their SDK wasn’t appreciated by Sony who launched an investigation. It lead to Jonathan Waring, a student at Teesside University in the UK.

Waring was arrested and immediately confessed but said that he didn’t expect any damages to have been caused to the games giant by the leak of the “research tool.”

The student had obtained a copy of the SDK from his university which had a licensed copy of the software. By sharing the content outside the university, Waring breached both the license and the law.

Yesterday the 23-year-old appeared at Durham Crown Court and pleaded guilty to infringing Sony’s copyrights. He will return to court for sentencing in June.

Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation is a network mechanism through which many Internet subscribers can share the same IP address. This has lead some to presume that as a result the online tracking of file-sharers might become more difficult for rightsholders. Not so, says a leading ISP.

IPv4 internet addresses are a finite resource and in Europe in particular have almost completely run out. This has led ISPs to look at options for using the IP addresses they have to serve more customers.

One of the solutions is known as Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation (CGNAT), which in basic terms offers a similar function to that provided by the network routers people have at home. Domestic ISP accounts have just a single allocated IP address but many users are able to share it due to the NAT abilities of the router.

CGNAT, on the other hand, is installed at the ISP level, meaning that many of the ISP’s subscribers can access the Internet using the same IP address as each other. This has lead some to question whether this offers an extra level of security to individuals looking to share files online. After all, if many users have the same IP, won’t it be hard for rightsholders and ISPs to say who any culprit might be?

According to BT, a leading UK ISP currently testing CGNAT, pirates can still be identified, providing rightsholders provide some key items of information.

“The technology does still allow individual customers to be identified if they are sharing the same IP address, as long as the port the customer is using is also known,” a BT spokesperson told Outlaw.com.

The ISP said that although IP addresses are shared, the combination of IP and port is unique. This information – along with a timestamp of the alleged activity – is enough to identify a unique subscriber.

“With CGNAT our broadband network ‘translates’ the source IP address on the Hub to a shared IP address, and also translates the ports being used to one within a unique block, from the 65,000 IP addresses ports available. This block is assigned for that user and that user only. We log this translation i.e. the shared IP address assigned, the block of ports and the time.

“If we subsequently receive a request to identify someone who is using IP address x, and port number y, and time z we can then determine who this is from the logs,” BT conclude.

The U.S. Government has taken a significant action against the web’s top Bitcoin exchange by seizing funds from its mobile payment services account as part of a criminal investigation.

As Bitcoin develops into a currency to be reckoned with, increasing numbers of netizens are seriously considering this pseudo-anonymous payment option.

However, just as more and more torrent sites begin to utilize Bitcoin as a viable donation platform, a new and worrying move by U.S. authorities has come to light.

According to a report confirmed by Betanews, the Department of Homeland Security has targeted a Dwolla account operated by Mt. Gox, the largest Bitcoin exchange.

“MtGox has read on the Internet that the United States Department of Homeland Security had a court order and/or warrant issued from the United States District Court in Maryland which it served upon the Dwolla mobile payment service with respect to accounts used for trading with MtGox. We take this information seriously,” the exchange said in a statement.

“However, as of this time we have not been provided with a copy of the court order and/or warrant, and do not know its scope and/or the reasons for its issuance. MtGox is investigating and will provide further reports when additional information becomes known.”

A spokesman for Dwolla confirmed the existence of a court order and said a ‘Seizure Warrant’ had been issued for the funds held in the account.

“In light of the court order, procured by the Department of Homeland Security, Dwolla has ceased all account activities associated with Dwolla services for Mutum Sigillum [MtGox] while Dwolla’s holding partner transferred Mutum Sigillium’s balance, per the warrant.”

The Dwolla platform was one of the key ways for users to purchase Bitcoins so the developments of the last 24 hours will be seen as a blow to the fledgling currency.

Of course, Voltage only want to utilize the law up to a point. Their main aim is to obtain the identities of the accused individuals so they may be contacted and asked to settle for a few thousand dollars. The case, which was paused for opinions earlier this year, is due to resume next month.

According to Canipre, the anti-piracy company working with Voltage to track alleged infringers, a lot depends on the outcome.

“We have a long list of clients waiting to go to court,” says Canipre managing director Barry Logan.

“We understand the culture of piracy. We’re bringing that model up here as a means to change social attitudes toward downloading.”

Not to mention generating plenty of cash for the trolls involved.

Earlier this week Kim Dotcom’s lawyers released a white paper accusing the U.S. Government of corruption.

The lawyers claim that Megaupload was taken down without a legal basis to keep Hollywood happy, securing the donation stream from the major movie companies.

Talking to Radio New Zealand U.S. Attorney General now denies that the Government caved in to Hollywood pressure.

“That’s not true,” Holder said.

“I don’t want to comment on the case other than to say it was brought on the basis of the facts, on the basis of the law and it’s consistent with the enforcement priorities that this administration has had,” he added.

Despite the worries that the case against Megaupload may fall apart, Holder said he is still hopeful that Dotcom and the other defendants will be successfully prosecuted.

This week Adobe announced a change in the way it does business, shifting away from boxed products and towards a cloud-based subscription model. The company hopes that those currently pirating its products will find the changes more affordable and find themselves encouraged to jump aboard the paid-train.

The days of obtaining new Adobe products such as Photoshop or its full Creative Suite in traditional boxes will soon be over. The company will focus on its Creative Cloud service which will require users to pay a monthly subscription.

Adobe’s products have been widely pirated over the years and already there are discussions on how the company’s new offering might be obtained for free. However, Adobe thinks that its new product will be more accessible and provide better value, leading to those currently using unauthorized copies to shift to a paid model.

“We believe in fighting piracy of software by making the right software for the right people at the right price,” said Adobe’s David Wadhwani.

“One of the things we noticed when we switched to the new model is that people who never bought software from Adobe – such as those using pirated software – now know that they can afford it.”

An analysis by CNet suggests that prices aren’t going to be dramatically different than in the past, but paying month by month might ease the burden for those who don’t have the money up front.

“I do not think people who pirate our software do it because they are bad people, or because they like to steal things,” Wadhwani said.

“I just think that they decided that they can not afford it. And now, with the switch to subscriptions and with the ability to offer software at a cheaper price, we see that the situation is beginning to change and we’re excited.”

1Channel is one of the world’s largest streaming movie and TV show portals but at the moment it’s working through a domain crisis. According to an admin, the 1Channel.ch domain has been “compromised”.

Last Friday we posted an update on a problem being faced by 1Channel.ch, a site that’s also known by its former name of LetMeWatchThis.ch.

Both domains used to direct to one site but last week the 1Channel.ch domain stopped working.

“We are having some issues with the 1channel.ch domain, please use letmewatchthis.ch domain in the mean time,” the site said.

Now a more serious problem has raised its head.

The 1Channel.ch domain is now working again and appears to display the correct LetMeWatchThis.ch site. However, on closer inspection it appears that 1Channel.ch now redirects to a clone of LetMeWatchThis, not the real site.

In a further indication that something is wrong, 1Channel’s forum section is not only out of date but whole sections are missing. LetMeWatchThis on the other hand appears to be working just fine.

“Do NOT use 1channel.ch domain, it has been compromised,” warn the operators of LetMeWatchThis.ch.

So, in summary – LetMeWatchThis.ch is now the real site and 1Channel.ch should be considered a fake/clone until further notice – logging in there should be avoided.

During the past few weeks the U.S. Ambassador to Australia has courted controversy with his opinions of those who download Game of Thrones without paying. Now it’s been revealed that he has more than just a passing interesting in copyright infringement.

Last month U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey L. Bleich kicked up a storm when he jumped aboard the Game of Thrones downloading controversy. He singled-out citizens in Australia and appealed to them to “stop stealing” the show.

Then just a few days later Bleich was back, responding to criticisms from people who felt that an ambassador should have better things to do than worry about a bit of downloading.

“Actually, given the overwhelming response to the topic, maybe I haven’t talked about internet piracy enough,” he said at the start of a second lengthy Facebook posting on the issue.

Now, thanks to News.com.au, we have a clearer idea why Bleich might have such a keen interest in the issue of illegal downloading.

Before being appointed as ambassador in 2009, Bleich spent 14 years at the Munger, Tolles & Olson lawfirm in Los Angeles. The Hollywood-based company had Time Warner – parent company of Game of Thrones creator HBO – as a regular client.

Furthermore, in 2011 the lawfirm represented record labels including Warner Bros. in their court battle against file-sharing service LimeWire.

And if that wasn’t enough, records obtained by News.com.au show that Bleich was an attorney at Village Roadshow, the company that sued Aussie ISP iiNet over copyright infringement claims.

Despite the above, Bleich says there is no conflict of interest.

“I have no connection with MTO anymore, and no economic interests in entertainment companies,” he said.

Last year Ed Sheeran hit the headlines when it was revealed his album had been illegally downloaded millions of times. The artist took the news completely in his stride and now he’s back again, suggesting he might be the one to get the ball rolling the next time.

In September 2012, Musicmetric published their Digital Music Index, a report on the state of online piracy.

Amongst dozens of stats it was revealed that English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran’s music had been downloaded in the UK more than any other artist. At the time Sheeran had sold 1.2 million albums, but 8 million had been downloaded illegally. Sheeran, however, was completely unfazed.

“There’s a decent balance between – you can live off your sales and you can allow people to illegally download it and come to your gigs. My gig tickets are £18 and my album is £8, so it’s all relative,” he said.

Now the Suffolk-born singer is back again with more controversial comments on piracy, this time in respect of the release of his new album. When asked by MTV when his new album would be available to fans, he offered the following teaser.

“It depends when I deliver it. If I deliver it to the label by the end of the year, it can come out early next year,” he said.

“And if I don’t deliver it by the end of the year, then I don’t know, I might just leak it. Put it on Limewire or something.”

Sheeran is signed to Atlantic, and they won’t like the LimeWire reference at all. The label was one of the plaintiffs that brought the company behind the file-sharing client to its knees in 2010.

Last year a man from Sweden became the first BitTorrent user in the country to be found guilty of sharing multiple movies. After a complaint by the prosecutor the case went to appeal and has now concluded with an ever-so-slightly increased fine.

In 2010 a man was house-sitting for a friend when early one morning he was confronted by police officers looking for the property owner. Unfortunately the police decided to search the sitter’s computer while they were there.

An investigation revealed a uTorrent client loaded with torrents and around 60 movies. The then 25-year-old was reported to both the prosecutor and copyright holders and charges were later pressed.

Last year the case was heard but the court went reasonably gently on the guy, handing down a 6,000 kronor ($920) fine. Displeased with this leniency, the prosecutor appealed.

The Court of Appeal has just reconsidered the case and decided that the original sentence was indeed a little on the light side. The original fine was increased to 8,000 kronor ($1,200).

Prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad noted that the man had not infringed copyright on a commercial level.

Downloadify, a new Chrome extension published just a few hours ago enables users to download MP3 files from the Spotify web player.

Users who install the extension have the option to download any song on Spotify web player by double-clicking on a track.

Upon publishing the extension still appears to work, but it’s highly doubtful that it will stay online for long. Last year Google cracked down on many YouTube rippers because of terms of service violations.

Tweakers notes that Spotify currently reports “issues with its website” on Twitter but it’s unclear whether this is related.

Ripping music from music sites and services is nothing new of course, but this is the first time we’ve seen such a straightforward option for Spotify.

Update: And…. It’s gone

Talks between Australian Internet service providers and rightsholders aimed at finding a way through the thorny issue of online piracy stumbled last year. Now they’ve ground to a halt.

When three years of discussions yielded no results, in November 2008 Hollywood movie studios under the banner of the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) sued local ISP iiNet. AFACT hoped that through legal action all ISPs could be held responsible for copyright infringements carried out by their customers.

In April 2012 the case came to a close, Hollywood lost, and it was back to the drawing board alongside fresh hopes for peaceful settlement.

Ever since, intermittent negotiations have continued between the ISPs and rightsholders, in the hope that the former would agree to implement some kind of graduated response/warning system on behalf of the latter in order to positively influence the behavior of pirating customers.

Last December, iiNet withdrew from the talks, declaring they’d had enough of dealing with rightsholders who refuse to make official content available at a reasonable price.

And now, six months later, with no further talks having taken place since, it seems the whole initiative has ground to a halt. David Epstein, chief of ISP Optus, told The Australian that his company could now back iiNet’s stance.

“We support a co-operative resolution to the issue but this requires general consensus among players and like treatment of any participant in a trial. We have not yet seen a model that enables this,” he said.

Despite voices to the contrary, the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) said that the talks hadn’t been abandoned and hope remains that an agreement can be reached. After suing iiNet and failing, they have few options left.

Following an initial investigation four years ago, a case against a file-sharing forum admin has just concluded with fines and a six month jail sentence.

In 2009, French anti-piracy group ALPA launched an investigation into Infernio Advitam, a 10,000 member file-sharing focused forum.

ALPA later filed a complaint with the police after discovering the site was making available more than 1,500 movies without permission.

According to a Numerama report, that case has now reached its conclusion with the Criminal Court of Caen handing down a six month jail sentence to the site’s operator.

In addition the admin will have to pay 8,000 euros in fines but damages, likely to be substantial, are yet to be agreed.

ALPA say the admin made around 25,000 euros from donations but the plaintiffs in the case – Fox, Columbia, Disney, Paramount, Universal Studios and Tristar – will expect much more.

Just two weeks after launch, BitTorrent Inc’s new sharing tool is already clocking up some impressive numbers.

BitTorrent Sync is a new tool that allows users to securely sync folders across multiple devices using the BitTorrent protocol. It’s a Dropbox-like tool but without cloud storage, and with no limit on file-sizes it’s proving a hit.

“To date, more than a petabyte of anonymous data has been synced between BitTorrent Sync users. A petabyte!” BitTorrent Inc just announced.

“To put that into context, the Internet Archive, one of the world wide web’s largest repositories of media, houses 10 petabytes of data. Sync is massive. And it’s growing. Over 70 terabytes of anonymous data are synced daily.”

For those users wondering how BitTorrent Inc knows how much is being shared, the company offers the following reassurances:

“Sync was built for secure sharing. While we have general statistics about the app, we don’t have any access to private information.

“The client reports back anonymous usage statistics in the same way our other clients do. Sync uses this call to check if there’s a new build available. This call also contains some anonymous statistics that allow us to understand how Sync performs, and how it’s being used; data transferred directly, through relay, size of folders, and number of files synced.

“This is the only information we collect, and we left it open intentionally – so that people could see the data we’re collecting. That way, it can be easily verified that we don’t have access to any private information,” the company concludes.

Now, if only there was an iOS version in the works…..

In the suit the plaintiffs mention that Warner Bros. has a history of protecting their own WB logo meme, and now the tables have turned.

“The “WB” logo also is a meme, even though it is only two letters inside 25 the outline of a shield. Of course, WB employs an army of lawyers who use trademark and copyright law to zealously protect its intellectual property, including its logo,” they write in the complaint.

“Yet, for the past three years, WB, along with game developer 5th, have knowingly and intentionally infringed plaintiffs’ copyrights and trademarks by using “Nyan Cat” and Patso’s image in WB’s top selling “Scribblenauts” games,” they add.

The meme creators demand that Warner Bros. and 5th no longer use their trademarks and request damages to compensate their losses.

When it comes to streaming movie and TV show portals, 1Channel is one of the world’s largest. However, many of its users have been in a state of panic over the past 24 hours after the site’s domain disappeared from the web without warning.

1Channel.ch is one of the most popular streaming portals on the Internet. The site is ranked the 293rd most-visited website according to Alexa with millions of pageviews every single day.

However, over the past 24/36 hours, things haven’t been going to plan.

The site usually operates from the Swiss-based 1Channel.ch domain but for the past day at least and at the time of writing it remains completely non-functional.

The site’s operator has given no detailed explanation for the outage in response to our request for comment, but did offer the following announcement.

“We are having some issues with the 1channel.ch domain, please use letmewatchthis.ch domain in the mean time,” the site said.

LetMeWatchThis was the site’s former name, a brand which still appears on the site today.

Here at TorrentFreak we like to keep a close eye on both Google’s Transparency Report and the ChillingEffects database since both provide a unique insight into DMCA takedown requests sent to Google, Twitter and other sites. Sadly, today we’re the ones being targeted by wrongful takedowns.

Pretty much every month we find strange, unusual, incompetent or downright weird takedown requests online, but it’s very rare that we find notices issued against our own domain.

Nevertheless it does happen, and today is one such special occasion.

April 1st we ran a story titled ‘Game of Thrones Pirates Break BitTorrent Swarm Record’ in which we explained, unsurprisingly, that a torrent swarm record had been broken after the new series of Game of Thrones premiered.

Unfortunately, anti-piracy company Entura International, who work on behalf of the BBC, think that the article infringes on the BBC’s copyrights.

Without contacting TorrentFreak first, the UK outfit went straight to Google in an attempt to have one of our URLs deindexed because they claim it infringes copyrights on an episode of Doctor Who. You can see the takedown notice on ChillingEffects here.

Luckily Entura appear to have botched the URL (which looks like it came from Twitter), so thankfully Google didn’t take down the link.

However, as can be seen here on TorrentFreak’s Google Transparency listing, we also have other issues to deal with.

At the end of April, French anti-piracy company SCPP asked Google to deindex a total of four TorrentFreak pages but because the notice is still to be filed on ChillingEffects, we don’t yet know what the problem is. We suspect that SCPP also made a careless mistake, but time will tell.

Thanks to Google and ChillingEffects, we shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out.

There are hundreds of proxy sites for torrent sites, most of them dedicated to The Pirate Bay.

These sites allow people to bypass IPS blockades, but when the original site goes down the proxy goes with it.

TorrentMirrors aims to solve this problem. The creators released so-called hybrid proxies that also function as a fully working mirror in case the original torrent site becomes unavailable due to technical difficulties.

TorrentMirrors currently has mirrors for The Pirate Bay, Extratorrent, KAT and isoHunt.

“The torrentmirror family of sites are not just proxy sites, they are also caching mirrors,” TorrentMirrors explains on its site.

“This means that if the target site becomes completely unavailable, the proxy will remain accessible for all cached content.”

“This also reduces load on the sites themselves and pages should load quicker than a conventional proxy. The proxies also have DNS bypassing which allows the target site to remain browsable through the proxy even if target domain’s DNS is changed or down.”

TorrentMirrors told TorrentFreak that they insert their own ads into the mirrors to cover server costs.

Authorities in the United States are continuing with their effort to seize website domains deemed to be infringing copyright and trademark laws.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations is the driving force behind Operation in Our Sites, an initiative that has seen dozens of domain names seized by the U.S. Government since 2010.

While file-sharing related domains have been seized on a number of occasions, more recently the emphasis has switched to sites connected to the sale of physical counterfeit products.

Last Friday, HSI special agents moved to seize 10 domains said to be involved in the distribution of counterfeit cycling products.

“The seizure of these domain names is an important tool in HSI’s continuing efforts to protect the consumer from sub-par and dangerous goods,” said Brian M. Moskowitz, the special agent in charge of HSI Houston.

“HSI special agents are also committed to protecting the rights of businesses that play by the rules so that they can remain competitive and support our economy.”

In addition to the domain name seizures, HSI targeted the site’s PayPal accounts said to contain more than $90,000.

Described by police as an international criminal gang and by the media as an outfit causing Hollywood and Bollywood “to bleed to the hilt”, two men in their twenties were arrested in India yesterday.

Rupesh Jaiswal, 28 and Tinu Sharma, 25, are said to be members of a P2P release group known as Yamraj who were responsible for camming local and Hollywood movies and distributing them on and offline.

According to a spokesman from Indore police headquarters, authorities received a tip from a legal officer with the MPA who advised that movies were being cammed in Indore movie theaters and later distributed.

“Subsequently, the crime branch was pressed into action to crack the case. Acting on a specific tip off, the duo running the shoot and selling pirated movie racket, were arrested on Monday,” he said.

According to local media, the pair rented 1TB of cloud storage with European company OVH and granted access to contacts so they could download the latest movies.

In several countries World Intellectual Property Day is used by pro-copyright groups to educate the public that strong copyright protections are needed.

China took it one step further and the local authorities seized the opportunity to take out a large piracy hub.

Siluhd.com, a website dedicated to HD video, was shut down by local police and 9 employees including the company’s CEO were arrested.

On the same day another prominent Chinese video site went offline. Yyets.com, listed among the 250 most visited websites in China, has put up a message stating that it’s temporarily closed. Interestingly, the site still works through www.yyets.com.

In the United States the Government uses World Intellectual Property Day to celebrate last years successful counterfeiting crackdowns. In addition the authorities teamed up with the MPAA to launch a new anti-piracy PSA, coming soon to a theater near you.

Happy World Intellectual Property Day!

A few hours after the switch TPB’s SSL certificate was revoked, showing an ominous red warning screen to those who browse the site over https.

“Secure Connection Failed. An error occurred during a connection to thepiratebay.is. Peer’s Certificate has been revoked.”

Some wondered whether this could be a new tactic by the entertainment industry to target the BitTorrent site, but reality is less exciting.

The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak that it’s merely an administrative issue which should be resolved soon.

It is expected that all proxies will function normally again after the owners make some required changes in the proxy setup.

The main issue appears to be that some proxies use the .se domain instead of the 194.71.107.80 IP-address to proxy the site.

Two parents have been landed with a copyright infringement bill after they admitted their kids downloaded and shared music without permission.

The pair, snared under New Zealand’s so-called ‘Skynet’ law, accepted that their three young children had infringed copyright on tracks by the Black Keys and Owl City.

The ISP account holder had received two previous warnings about illegal file-sharing but triggering a third when the Owl City track Good Times was shared “by mistake.”

According to Stuff, the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (Rianz) requested a $1627 (US$1376) compensation.

However, the Copyright Tribunal ordered a penalty of just $317 (US$268) after refusing to award damages for subsequent infringements carried out by other BitTorrent users following the initial uploads.

The case is the sixth to go all the way to the Tribunal and the first in which sharing was blamed on children.

This year two giants in their respective fields launched important new products into the technology marketplace. Now they’re boosting the success of each other’s services.

In mid-January, a year to the day since his creation Megaupload was destroyed by U.S. authorities, Kim Dotcom and friends launched Mega.co.nz.

This new file-hosting venture went off with a bang, gaining not only massive news coverage but also a fresh, growing and largely impressed userbase. A month after its launch Mega had more than three million members and is still growing today.

Just about two weeks after the Mega launch, a group of iOS hackers calling themselves the Evad3rs team released the Evasi0n jailbreak for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPad Mini, iPod Touch) running iOS 6.0 and 6.1. In less than a week more than seven million people had used the tool and by mid March that had increased to a massive 18 million.

Now, around three months after the launch of both projects, it’s interesting to see how much they are relying on each other. Along with Box and RapidShare, Evad3rs chose Mega.co.nz to host the (completely legal) Evasi0n jailbreak files. It’s been a fruitful, albeit unofficial, partnership.

According to Alexa, Evasi0n.com is currently supplying 5.63% of Mega.co.nz’s web traffic. The only referrer to send more traffic is Google with 6.46%, two places ahead of Facebook sending 5.17%.

On the flipside Mega.co.nz also feeds Evasi0n.com. Of all Evasi0n.com users, 8.35% had visited Mega.co.nz directly before. Google is Evasi0n’s number one referrer with 15.77%.

Finally, while we’re on the subject of webstats, as pointed out by a user on Twitter today, in just a matter of months Mega.co.nz has grown from nothing to become the third most-visited .co.nz domain.

Quite an achievement.

Since last year the Finnish public had the option to suggest what laws they want to live under.

A recent modification of the national Constitution allows for citizens to make legislative proposals for the Parliament to vote on, providing it gets 50,000 supporters within 6 months.

One of the proposals that has submitted since calls for a fairer copyright law.

Termed ‘To Make Sense of the Copyright Act’, the proposal wants to reduce penalties for copyright infringement, increase fair use, and ease the ability for people to make copies of items they already own (for format shifting, or backups).

During the first three months little over 27,000 people have supported the initiative, and to get more people to sign up several websites are participating in a SOPA-style Internet blackout today.

“The idea is to follow the model that was in use in the US where companies take part in campaigning when there is an injustice. So the blackout day is a chance for Finnish companies to speak out against this far-reaching copyright law,” Joonas Pekkanen of the Open Ministry said in a comment.

Among the participating websites are Afterdawn, FinDance and ja Ylilauta and many others. Finnish citizens can support the proposal here.

According to those who engage in it, file-sharing is supposed to be fun. A breath of fresh air when compared to some stuffy official offerings that restrict their users with tight business models and overpowering licensing restraints. Now it appears that at least one torrent site is attempting to go down exactly the same route.

Last week we reported on some unusual developments at the CHDBits BitTorrent tracker. The site, for reasons best explained by them, decided to implement some of the most crazy members rules we’ve ever seen. You can read about them here.

While many hoped the site would have a change of heart and soften its stance a little, it seems that they have done entirely the opposite.

In what they are describing as their “year end assessment”, members are now required to jump through a series of hoops starting May 1 and running until June 30, 2013.

The requirements (pasted below) seem to fly in the face of the freedoms supposedly offered by file-sharing. Why people want to exercise this much control is beyond comprehension.

If this is the future of torrents, the mass exodus to iTunes et al is just around the corner.

(Here are the ‘assessment’ rules, copied from the site.)

After nearly two decades Black Sabbath came out with a new studio album this year.

Today, the band released the first single “God Is Dead?” which was also posted on the official Black Sabbath YouTube channel.

This modern technology gives fans to check out the song before buying it. At least, that was the idea.

The video is currently featured prominently on YouTube, but those who try to play it will see that Universal Music Group pulled it down.

Perhaps the record wasn’t too happy with the single after all? Or is it yet another example of a copyright holder shooting itself in the foot with a bogus takedown request?

Probably the latter.

At the turn of the decade UK anti-piracy lawfirm ACS:Law were making dozens of headlines as they tried to extract cash settlements from alleged BitTorrent users. The firm did in fact succeed in bringing in many hundreds of thousands of pounds in cash, but due to their greed and incompetence their scheme began to fall apart.

While many groups and individuals contributed to the eventual downfall of ACS:Law and its infamous owner Andrew Crossley, it was Judge Colin Birss QC who had the pleasure of seeing the outfit take its dying breaths in a final series of embarrassing court hearings.

In 2011, as Crossley was collecting the Internet Services Providers’ Association’s award for Villain of the Year, Judge Birss was nominated as Hero of the Year for his stand against ACS:Law. He didn’t win, but today he has an even greater accolade.

“The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of His Honour Judge Colin Ian Birss, Q.C., to be a Justice of the High Court with effect from 13 May 2013 on the elevation of Mr. Justice Briggs to the Court of Appeal,” reports the Ministry of Justice.

Congratulations Judge Birss, well deserved.

Earlier this week MPAA chief Chris Dodd delivered a keynote speech to The National Association of Theatre Owners at their CinemaCon conference in Las Vegas. He began by noting that global box office receipts for 2012 had climbed to $34.7 billion, a 6 percent increase over 2011, but according to the Senator it’s not all good news.

“These box office receipt numbers grew because admissions jumped by 6%,” Dodd explained.

“Yes, 2012 was a truly great year at the movies! And I believe the summer blockbusters being previewed this week will contribute to a highly successful 2013.”

Then, in a recurring theme underlining the movie industry’s recent overtures to the tech sector, Dodd said that Hollywood and and Silicon Valley have a lot more in common than most people realize.

“Not only do we work closely with tech companies to create and promote our films; we are ourselves tech companies,” Dodd said. “We celebrate innovation through the world’s most cutting-edge content, and we embrace technology as critical to the success of the creators in our community.”

But despite the success of 2012 and the beauty of technology, Dodd went on to paint a darker and more cautious picture than last year’s optimistic results appear to support.

“Of course, technology can be abused especially by cybercriminals,” he said.

“Stopping content theft must be a top priority to all of us. Especially when you consider that in some instances blockbuster films have been downloaded illegally hundreds of thousands of times, harming not only the producers, but you, the exhibitors as well,” Dodd cautioned.

“The good news is that we are making progress, building inroads with tech companies, and working closely with ISPs, ad bureaus, payment processors and Internet hosting providers. And thanks to NATO and your vigilance, the incidence of illegal camcording in theaters is down 50% since 2007.”

Then, in an attack on those who associate free access to online content with right to free speech, Dodd offered the following.

“Too many people still coat the pill of content theft in chocolate. Free speech, they say, gives them the right to consume and enjoy our content for free, that creative artists and ordinary working people spent years developing, producing and exhibiting.

“This fallacy must be aggressively challenged and countered by everyone in our industry. If we allow for two centuries of copyright law and respect for intellectual property to be undermined and unenforced, the consequences on innovation in this country — not just for Hollywood, film makers, studios and cinemas, but for our entire economy, will be devastating,” he warned.

“We, and you, must underscore the message that business, government, and ordinary citizens must work together to ensure that the Internet works for everyone, and that intellectual property is respected and protected.”

Today Will.i.am appears to be in trouble.

A few hours ago he released his track “Let’s go” on YouTube. A track that sounds an awful lot like Arty and Mat Zo’s ‘Rebound’.

On Twitter Arty says that the rights were never cleared and that the sample was taken from the master file.

Record label Anjunabeats says it’s looking into the matter, while the other end of the dispute remains silent for now.

It looks like this is a lawsuit waiting to happen, which will probably be settled in a few days for a bag of cash.
