Course Overview

The text booklets are approximately 60–75 pages long. Each booklet contains three sections divided into five topics.

 
The content begins with the evolution of government, going back to historic empires before Christ. Then it moves on to the Roman government before introducing the colonies and the beginning of the US government.

The second booklet is an in-depth look at the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the branches of government. The final booklet covers state and local government, the election of the president, rights and responsibilities, and parliamentary procedure.

Text Layout

Each topic is only 3–4 pages long, making it manageable to cover in a day. At the beginning of each topic, a vocabulary list covers essential vocabulary from within the text. Within the text vocabulary appears in bold text. 

There are black-and-white illustrations and maps sprinkled throughout the text for both visual interest and topical clarity.

Most sections also include a life principle and an important quote about government from a famous historical figure. For example, one section is by Francis Bacon. “If we do not maintain justice, justice will not maintain us.”

Activity Books

The activity books are organized into the same chapters, sections, and topics as the textbooks, making pairing them seamless. Each topic has a page or two of questions, mostly fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice.

Sometimes, there are places to write down quotes or important content, such as the preamble to the Declaration of Independence.

While the company labels these as activity books, most homeschool families would recognize them as workbooks because they focus entirely on written questions rather than hands-on activities. 

Teacher Resource Kit

In addition, this course includes a teacher resource kit. The resource kit has a table of contents, activity book answer keys, section quizzes, and chapter tests. There are also answer keys for the quizzes and tests included in this set. It is provided loose-leaf with the pages hole-punched for a three-ring binder.

Wordsmith creative writing is not intended to be a complete grammar curriculum. Instead, it builds on the grammar that students have already learned and teaches them to use it effectively. The first portion of the book reviews the key parts of speech, not just by identifying them in sentences but by improving them through precise, colorful word choice. One of the strengths of this course is that it actively encourages the student to write and edit sentences, not just to mark parts of prepared sentences. Daily assignments typically provide sample sentences to rewrite, avoiding the struggle of starting with original sentences while allowing students to see the improvement their changes make in a sentence. 

Students start the year by improving their sentence structure. By the second quarter of the year, they are improving full paragraphs and progressing toward larger assignments. The bite-sized, sequential progression is natural and steady; by the end of the year, students will have written a variety of narratives, dialogues, interviews, and a short story. Parents and students alike will look back at the work written at the beginning of the year and be excited to see the improvement in their final products by the end of the course!

Is Wordsmith middle school writing curriculum designed for independent work?

Wordsmith’s creative writing course does require teacher participation, though the level of participation can vary depending on the student’s maturity and motivation levels. Teaching writing can be daunting to some parents, especially if they feel that they lack experience in this skill. Thankfully, one of the distinctives of this middle school creative writing course is that it provides excellent daily lesson comments for the teacher. The first several pages of the Teacher’s Guide is dedicated to explaining the purpose and approach of this particular curriculum. It also provides helpful guidelines and a clear mental framework for parents to incorporate as they evaluate their child’s work. The teacher’s version of the daily assignment often includes commentary on what to look for in the written work or key discussion tips for helping the students to evaluate their work constructively.

What is the course schedule?

Wordsmith is a four-day a week, full school year, 36-week course. This schedule allows for homeschooling families to adjust it to their family’s personal needs. By adding a fifth day of work each week, the coursework can be completed earlier, thus abbreviating the school year. Alternatively, the fifth day can remain open for completing unfinished assignments or for providing built-in flexibility to accommodate daily homeschool life.

Wordsmith adopts a relaxed, conversational style in the textbooks with the intent to engage the student’s imagination. The author includes creative story prompts with each writing assignment to help circumvent the dreaded “writer’s block” and ensure success. Some topics easily incorporate all five senses so that both the writer and the reader are fully engaged. Sometimes the author provides preparatory questions that stimulate the writers to more carefully analyze the person or situation that they are writing about. Here are seven skills that can be achieved by learning music in your home.

Big Picture Mentality 

This is helpful with many areas in life. When setting a goal, it’s helpful to keep that goal front and center. Remind yourself that all the work done is inching closer to achieving that goal. Whether it’s mastering an instrument, playing a particular piece, or writing an exam, realize that the hard steps of learning are the stepping stones for getting closer to achieving the goals. All the little notes on a sheet of music, when put together, produce the most wonderful symphony.

Perseverance 

When you have that big picture mentality, this can help you to persevere. Practice makes perfect! This skill will help your child keep going even when things are hard. Part of this process is learning that it’s okay when a particular piece is hard. It will get easier as they keep practicing.

Patience 

For children, patience is very hard to come by sometimes! But like the skill of perseverance, patience is needed to keep going towards reaching the goal. Remind your children it’s okay to feel discouraged. But they must learn how to pick themselves up again and keep on going. It’s important to be patient with yourself because we are not perfect. Everyone needs to have patience! It’s also tempting to want to skip steps along the way because it seems tedious. But even the easy parts need to be practiced, not just the hard pieces.

Problem-solving

Like many subjects, there are tough pieces that may be hard to figure out. Rather than letting the problems deter them, teach them how to think of ways they can improve or work around a particular problem. Maybe they need to ask someone for help or do some research. Practicing this will encourage your child’s skills in creativity as they work towards finding different ways to help work on those tough pieces as well.

Time Management 

Quality depends on the quantity of time that is put into achieving a goal. Imagine the difference between someone who practiced for half an hour as opposed to someone who practiced for many. The evidence will be shown in their performance (unless you’ve got a musical prodigy!). For most, people need to make the time to practice, and it needs to be enough time to work on those more difficult parts and to practice the piece on a whole, from start to finish. This is where goal-setting meets schedules. Your child will benefit by using the time management skill with music alongside daily chores and schoolwork. They will also learn to realize how much time is needed for tasks as they get used to it and be able to plan accordingly with more ease.

Working Together with Others

If your children join a choir or play in a band with other children, they must learn to work together. This encompasses some of the other skills listed, like patience and perseverance, but it also is a parallel to the big picture mentality. They have to see and hear the end result and work together to make sure everyone gets their part right. Later on, when your children are out in the workforce, they will have to apply this skill when working with a team.

Stress Relief

Music on a whole is a stress reliever for many. Some people like to write in journals, draw or paint pictures, or read books. Some like to sing songs or play an instrument to ease their minds and relax. Music is a great way to give your children a way to calm down when they are having a rough day. Learning what you can use as a healthy way to de-stress can be a great skill to have when problems come again.

The gift of music is so much more than musical notes and instruments. It can be a great teacher of life skills for your children to learn and take with them as they grow.
