Aquacast international ltd (www.aquacastinternational.com), a company registered in England/Wales, has developed a new construction method that is found useful in lagoons tidal power electricity generation.

The of the V and W precast design principle, makes construction in water extremely fast and easy to attain to form lagoons structures turbines are then assembled to produce tidal power and electricity, the system is also found useful in other applications such as, reclaiming land from the sea, the construction of sea walls, harbours jetties. The systems unique principle is the instantly formed holes in the structure during construction, these uniformly formed holes, provide a unique option of piling that enable structures to rise above water level claiming land from the sea and forming lagoons, the construction takes place without the need for conventional method practice of using shuttering and mixing concrete, saving considerable costs in both time and material, the
method has a worldwide patent protection.

The aquacast method, has attracted several tidal lagoon applications interests from tidal electricity generating companies, a draft design of tidal lagoon was submitted to Baker Telly IOM, several other companies have also expressed interest in using the system for tidal power electricity generation.

In July 2015, Aquacast International signed an exclusive manufacturing and marketing partnership agreement, with the world third largest cement makers CEMX UK, it is hoped the two companies will market the system worldwide.

The Solar Show in Manila, Philippines on 3 and 4 June 2015
- REC showcases its capabilities as an integrated solar energy solutions provider

Visit us at The Solar Show on 3 and 4 June 2015
– Booth Number 51, SMX Convention Center, Manila, Philippines

Singapore – May 26, 2015: REC, a leading global provider of solar energy solutions with one of the largest vertically integrated and fully automated production facility in Southeast Asia, is exhibiting at The Solar Show Philippines from 3 to 4 June. This is the country’s biggest and most influential tradeshow for solar power and photovoltaic (PV) technology where clean technology and renewable companies come together to exhibit and market their products and solutions.

At the two-day exhibition, REC’s TwinPeak Series and the REC SolarBox Hybrid Solution will be on display. REC will be presenting its solar manufacturing value chain where visitors will have an in-depth understanding of how solar panels are made from silicon, wafers and cells. The three exhibits on display during the trade show/event reinforce REC’s pole position as a leading global provider of solar energy solutions. It also demonstrates that REC is constantly at the forefront of solar technology and innovation.

Jen Tan, REC’s Vice President for Sales and Marketing in Asia-Pacific said, “As a leading global provider of solar energy solutions, we want to make a difference in helping to power the world around us. Just last month, Philippines declared a state of emergency in which a 200-megawatt (MW) power shortage resulted in a blackout across the country for some days of April and May. This highlighted the importance of alternative electricity sources. Renewable solar energy is definitely attractive to a tropical country like Philippines with abundance of free energy directly from the sun.”

She added, “On the back of growing energy demand and the power supply shortage,

the Philippines government has introduced measures in ensuring a more sustainable future for the country. Some of these initiatives include a US$0.22 cents feed-in-tariff [FIT] for up to 500MW of solar installations as well as a net metering program for its residential market.”

There has been a growing demand for renewable solar energy in the residential and commercial rooftop segments as well as integration of PVs in island grids and off-grid resorts. Solar adoption is gaining traction amongst many local households with the potential for solar expected to exceed the National Renewable Energy Plan’s target of 1,528MW by 2013.

According to the Department of Energy’s 2009-2030 Power Development Plan, the country’s energy consumption is forecasted to reach 149,067 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by 2030. This is a big increase from the previous estimated demand of 86,809 GWh by 2018 and the actual demand of 55,417 GWh in 2008. Peak demand is likely to reach 14,311 GWh by 2018 and increase to 24,534 GWh by 2030, a significant jump from 2008′s estimate of 9,226 GWh.

Furthermore, the Philippines Sustainable Energy Finance program (SEF) was launched in 2008, a first in the ASEAN region. Since then, SEF has been building a sustainable market capacity to develop and finance commercial investments that promote the use of new energy resources and reduction of carbon emissions.

These initiatives by the policy-makers in Philippines highlight the growing importance of solar in the country.

‘Sustainability’ has long since become a must-tick box to please stakeholders where any large scale project is undertaken. But the precise meaning and implications of this nebulous term are all too often over-looked. Where it applies to power, should we be more concerned about cost sustainability and giving access in a region where energy poverty levels are still high, or should greater focus be placed on environmental impact? Are there other key aspects of this term that need fulfilling?

We interviewed World Energy Council’s Regional Manager of Asia, J.K. Mehta on his take on sustainability. Read on to find out more!

Q. Can fossil fuels exist in the fuel mix of a ‘sustainable’ energy environment?

A. When we discuss energy issues there are two distinct aspects of it. That is first is the energy should be available to all & then the available energy should be sustainable. Energy access or making energy available to all is in itself is a big challenge & considering the existing availability for resource & technology ,use of fossil fuels to meet the energy needs is inevitable & shall have to co-exist in the fuel mix in foresee able future.

It may be noted that it was in UNFCCC’s Lima COP, December 2014, that for the first time, there was an unofficial mention of achieving zero emissions globally by 2075. Clearly if such a scenario becomes part of policy, fossils will no longer be available for use.

Q. In Asia where energy poverty levels are still high, should emphasis be placed on cost sustainability when meeting energy demand, or should the focus be on the environmental impact?

A. As mentioned earlier, considering the priority of needs specially in developing countries of Asia, it is important to provide energy to the people deprived of it as of now & who are still dependent on polluting sources such as firewood chips & dung cakes as well as other fossil fuels for meeting their cooking & other energy needs. Therefore, a delicate balance has to be maintained for providing energy in most environment friendly manner at “optimal cost”. Any technology that fits the optimal cost should be considered for long term sustainability. Wind is already competitive with fossils is several parts of Asia, and solar tariffs has dropped by 50% in India itself. Hence, environmentally sustainable technologies have a business case now.

Q. With recent oil prices dropping, would that affect the adoption of renewable energy? With fossil fuels now being cheaper, would renewable energy take a back seat once again?

A. Off late, there has been an increasing awareness about the impacts of climate change and a global dialogue on containment of green house gases. The renewable energy options for meeting the energy needs were being adopted & implemented keeping greater environmental goals in mind & with up gradation of technology & economics scale. The cost of renewable energy projects have reduced considerably in recent years. There is a vast supply demand gap and fluctuating oil prices or the recent drop in prices may not have any serious impact on implementation of ongoing & future renewable energy projects.

It is important to note that much of South Asia’s electricity base is not oil fired. So while oil has an impact on transportation sector, it may not impact renewable energy that is largely focused on power generation.

Q. Is wide-spread renewable energy adoption the answer to sustainability in Asia’s energy sector?

A. There are no two opinions about the fact that renewable energy must be utilized to full potential to meet the energy needs of Asia in a sustainable fashion. It is equally important to implement off grid, the distributed renewable energy products & stand alone micro-grids to meet the energy needs in far flung & remote areas.

Asia’s situation is different from Europe or USA, where renewables have to replace existing fossil fired capacity. In Asia, renewables are not replacing, but act as a complimentary technology for energy access. Seen together with the falling cost of renewable technology, flexibility they provide in terms of small scale installations and speed of construction, renewables are a good choice for future of electrification.

At Power & Electricity World Asia 2015, we bring together 4 CEOs from Asian power & utility companies to addresses the question of what ‘sustainability’ can and should look like within the context of the Asian power sector, and outline a few key pointers as to how such goals might be reached.

This panel will address the following points:

Addressing the fuel mix: can fossil fuels exist in a ‘sustainable’ energy environment?

Human vs climatic factors

How does the transition to a smart energy ecosystem sit alongside questions of ‘sustainability’

Not all batteries are created equal

Almere Haven, 3 October 2014 – Victron Energy, a leading Dutch power solutions provider, launches its new battery balancer. Not all batteries are created equal, and when multiple batteries are combined to create one large battery bank, the small differences between the batteries can cause problems that substantially shorten the life time. The battery balancer prevents this by actively correcting the imbalance. Besides correcting, it is also equipped with an alarm function to give a warning in case of a large deviation. Its stunning simplicity and effectiveness is the result of Victron Energy’s extensive experience and knowledge, gained whilst working with both conventional and lithium batteries.

Batteries can be used in both series strings and series/parallel banks, be they 24 V, 48 V or sometimes higher voltages. When using a series string or series/parallel bank to create differing voltages and Ah ratings from individual 12 Volt batteries, you can end up with a variance in terminal voltages on each battery. This will cause the batteries to become unbalanced.

This situation is often made even worse by the seemingly ever increasing demands on batteries, to run power hungry equipment. The consequence of all this is that an expensive string or bank can fail prematurely, which is costly in both time and money. Correcting and preventing battery imbalance with the Victron battery balancer is the answer to extending the lifetime of batteries.

Knowing the battery state is essential
The Victron Energy BMV-702 battery monitor, released earlier this year, is a perfect addition. Besides state of charge and voltage readouts, it also has unique mid-point voltage monitoring. This feature provides detailed insight in the balance of the battery bank, as well as configurable alarms.

Together, both products provide a comprehensive solution to monitor and maintain 24 and 48 Volt battery banks in tip-top condition.

Technical Information
If you wish to learn more about battery balancing and midpoint voltage monitoring, please see the Victron battery balancer datasheet and section ’5.2 Midpoint voltage monitoring’, in the BMV-700 series manual.
