Since eggs were considered the best source of protein because your body completely digests and uses them, they have a value of 100. A perfect score.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">A new study from Canada shows that egg yolks, the part of the egg you’re warned not to eat at any cost, doesn’t just have protein and minerals like calcium and selenium, but it also has antioxidants.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The researchers discovered that two egg yolks have almost twice as much <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">antioxidant power</span></strong> as an apple, and about the same power as 25 grams of cranberries.1</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">And the results from the lab tests A.N. brought me on her eggs show they have even more antioxidants than the eggs from the Canadian study.</span></p>

<p>Red Bull, Vitamin Water, Monster, and a ton of more energy drinks have flooded the market in the last decade. The caffeine content of many energy drinks is uncomfortably high. According to a report in the <em>Journal of Analytical Toxicology</em>, <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">energy drinks contain as much as 141 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per serving</span></strong>, often more than an eight-ounce cup of coffee (about 83 mg to 135 mg &#8212; and coffee also contains natural co-factors that counteract some of the stimulating effect of caffeine). In comparison, a 12-ounce Coca-Cola Classic contains 34.5 mg of caffeine&#8230; Pepsi contains 38 mg&#8230; and Tab has 46.5 mg. And, with energy drinks, as with colas and cups of coffee, many people don’t stop with one. In addition to excess amounts of caffeine, research conducted at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit found a link between consumption of energy drinks and <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">elevated blood pressure and heart rate</span></strong>.</p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><em><strong>Exercise and sports</strong></em><em><strong>.</strong></em></span> Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it promotes the production of urine by the kidneys. Severe dehydration may result when you combine the effect of the caffeine in the drinks with the natural fluid loss that occurs with exercise and sweating. Because of this risk, the American  College of Sports Medicine discourages high school athletes from drinking these stimulant-containing energy or sports drinks.</p>
<p><em><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Energy drinks and alcohol</span></strong></em><em><strong>.</strong></em> Some recent entries in the energy drink market contain alcohol. But whether purchased as an all-in-one product or with alcohol added separately, it’s important to note that there are particular dangers to imbibing spiked energy drinks since they contain both stimulants and a depressant (the alcohol). The stimulants mask the fatigue that normally serves to signal that you’ve had too much to drink and it’s time to quit. They may also reduce perceived impairment, and lead inexperienced kids (adults too, for that matter) to believe that they are more sober than they actually are. That can lead to poor judgment&#8230; and sometimes serious accidents. The fact that these substances are combined can also affect how they are metabolized, leading to the potential for serious medical problems when done in excess, and/or by people who are vulnerable, including those on prescription or OTC medications.</p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><em><strong>Posing as &#8220;natural.&#8221;</strong></em> </span>To appeal to health-conscious consumers, many marketers pump their drinks full of vitamins, amino acids or herbs (such as carnitine, guarana, ginseng, bitter orange), and then slap a &#8220;natural&#8221; label on the bottles. Don’t be duped by this ruse, since there’s nothing wholesome about these beverages and anything &#8220;natural&#8221; added to them is in amounts too tiny to have any benefit whatsoever.</p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><em><strong>Bloated with sugar and calories</strong></em><em><strong>.</strong></em></span> Like soft drinks, energy drinks can make you fat. They are loaded with sugar &#8212; equivalent to three or more teaspoons per can or bottle &#8212; and empty calories. They might seem less &#8220;bad for you&#8221; than sodas&#8230; for example, one serving of green tea flavored Vitamin Water contains 50 calories and 13 grams of sugar, while one 12-ounce Coca Cola Classic has 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar. But a more careful reading of the Vitamin Water label reveals that one serving consists of eight ounces and the beverage comes in 20-ounce bottles&#8230; so a bottle contains 125 calories and 32.5 grams of sugar. Additionally energy drinks are often made from fructose &#8212; crystalline fructose or high fructose corn syrup. Some experts believe these sweeteners are damaging and may do more harm to your liver and endocrine system than table sugar or glucose.</p>

<p>The weapons of choice against free radicals are antioxidants.  Antioxidants are molecules that can neutralize harmful oxygen radicals and are found in some vitamins, minerals, chemicals, bioflavonoids, herbs, and other substances. Not all vitamins and minerals work as antioxidants. In today’s society, with all the things we are exposed to, a great need exists to supplement our diets with extra antioxidants.</p>
<p>Free radicals are highly-reactive compounds created in the body during normal metabolic functions—like the ordinary metabolic breakdown of organic compounds—or introduced from the environment. Oxygen is one of the sources of free radicals. Increased oxygen consumption, as an exercise, leads to increased production of free radicals. Oxidation is one of the major causes of aging.</p>
<p>Electrons normally come in pairs. A free radical contains an unpaired electron. In its unbalanced state, the free radical wants to combine with other molecules and when it does, it can destroy an enzyme, a protein molecule, cell membranes, RNA, DNA, hormones, or a complete cell. The stealing of electrons by the free radicals creates a chain reaction, resulting in thousands of free radicals. Antioxidants work by seeking out and easily giving up electrons to free radicals, which neutralizes them. Antioxidants can reduce the energy of the free radical, stop it from forming at all, or interrupt the free radical chain reactions.</p>
<p>Environmental sources of free radicals include <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">radiation, sun exposure, x-rays, automobile exhausts, heavy metals, cigarette smoke, second-hand smoke, unsaturated fat, chemicals in water, processed food, pollutants, toxins, and stress</span></strong>. Free radicals are believed to play a role in many health conditions, including the aging process, loss of elasticity, decrease in flexibility, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, cancer, heart disease, and other degenerative diseases. Over the course of time, they make the body vulnerable to disease by weakening the immune system. Most degenerative diseases are accompanied by damage to the immune system. Eventually, free radical build-up exceeds the body’s ability to protect itself. Smokers take note—one puff on a cigarette brings trillions of free radicals into the body! I wonder if that has anything to do with why a smoker usually looks much older than his actual age. He not only looks older, but physiologically he is.</p>
<p>Antioxidants help protect your body from nearly every chronic degenerative disease, including cancer. Antioxidants in your food are one of the best ways to counter the damage that free radicals produce. Some of the highest-ranking antioxidant food sources are vegetables, blueberries, beans, and nuts.</p>
<p>Supplementing with a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidant enzymes, and herbs may be the best way to protect the body from free radical damage. Don’t think that supplementing with these things will make up for an unhealthy lifestyle—a poor diet, lack of sleep, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle. N-Acetyl-Cysteine is the acetylated form of L-Cysteine.</p>
<h4>N-Acetyl Cysteine increases Glutathione Levels</h4>
<p>N-Acetyl Cysteine is rapidly metabolized to intracellular glutathione. Glutathione acts as a powerful antioxidant in the body. Glutathione also detoxifies chemicals into less harmful compounds. N-Acetyl Cysteine also protects the body from acetaminophen toxicity and is used in hospitals for patients with acetaminophen poisoning. It has also been shown to be effective at treating liver failure from other causes as well.</p>
<h4>N-Acetyl Cysteine Chelates Heavy Metals</h4>
<p>Heavy metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic are detoxified and removed from the body by N-Acetyl Cysteine . It also increases the excretion of zinc and other essential minerals when taken over an extended period. It is therefore necessary to supplement zinc, copper and other trace minerals when taking N-Acetyl Cysteine.</p>
<h4>N-Acetyl Cysteine and the Immune System</h4>

<h4>N-Acetyl Cysteine and Cancer</h4>
<p>N-Acetyl CysteineN-Acetyl Cysteine has been shown to reduce the proliferation of certain cells lining the colon and may reduce the risk of colon cancer in people with recurrent polyps in the colon. Its action as an antioxidant and a glutathione precursor may also contribute to a protective effect against cancer.</p>
<h4>N-Acetyl Cysteine Cautions</h4>
<p>When taking N-acetyl cysteine it is recommended that <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">two to three times as much Vitamin C be taken at the same time</span></strong>. Failure to do so may result in more harm than good from taking this product because of the prolonged presence of the oxidized form of L-Cysteine. Vitamin C also helps keep the glutathione that is produced from the Cysteine in its reduced form so that it can continue acting as an antioxidant.</p>
<h4>N-Acetyl Cysteine Dosage</h4>
<p>Typical dosage recommendations are in the range of 250-1800mg of NAC daily for the majority of therapeutic benefits.</p>
