Womens College Water Polo: Update on potential cancellation of University of Maryland program

The University of Maryland has shelved National Letters of Intent for the 2011-2012 women's water polo recruiting class according to a person with knowledge of the situation. This comes as the Washington Post reports the university's athletic budget will lose $4.7 million this fiscal year. and that as many as 10 intercollegiate sports could be cut.
No official word has come that the water polo program will be cancelled. The sport is on a preliminary list of those recommended to be eliminated, according to multiple sources. Athletic Director, Kevin Anderson, met with teams individually to share the news yesterday. University President Wallace Loh is expected to make a final decision on the matter by December 31.
The team will play its 2012 schedule regardless of the President's decision since the fiscal year's budget has already been allocated, according to this person.
In March of 2010 UC Davis announced plans to eliminate intercollegiate water polo, sparking a nationwide fund-raising effort that ultimately saved the programs.

Boys Prep Water Polo: 2010 CIF-SS semifinal predictions

As Dan Albano said in his most recent podcast, sometimes the semifinals are the best matches of the tournament. So it should be today in Irvine with two monstrous games in D-1 and several more excellent ones throughout the field.

D-1: Loyola should be out for revenge after 2009's very tough upset loss to El Toro in Los Angeles. Not expected to be as strong this year after the graduation of Nicola Vavic, Loyola has surprised many with an excellent season, competing for the top ranking in D-1 throughout the season. But El Toro has been similarly good if not more so. This should be an excellent match, perhaps the best of the evening. But this is where El Toro is most often at its best. It will win a close match to return to the title game once again.
Meanwhile, Dos Pueblos derailed Newport's aspirations to return to the title match and face Mater Dei. Does anyone remember just how inconsequential Mater Dei was in water polo not a decade ago? Now, it is perhaps the most intimidating program in the nation with a seemingly endless pipeline of youthful talent to take the place of those who inconveniently have to graduate. Already they are penciled in as number one in the 2011 polls among many.
But not this year.
Dos Pueblos is the upset pick for 2010. Their experience and confidence will overcome the youth and talent of the Monarchs, and the team from Goleta goes on to the finals.
Don't worry, Mater Dei will be back.

D-2: Foothill's Paul Reynolds or Corona del Mar's Chase Watson? Speed, defense and outside shooting or mass and brute force? I'll take the latter. CDM has improved throughout the season after a close loss to Foothill very early. Reynolds is a marvelous player. But Foothill doesn't have enough to overcome the sheer size of CdM. The SeaKings prevail.
Murrieta Valley? How can they possibly compete with a program so laden with history as Long Beach Wilson? Who knew that there was even quality water polo on I-15?
The Wilson community desperately seeks to return to D-1 status. But with the relative weakness of the rest of the Moore League, and the confused state of the feeder programs that for so long supplied the Bruins with its talent, it has much work to do. Why the requiem? Because the upstarts from the Inland Empire move on convincingly. They have proven themselves throughout the state losing only to the very top teams. And they genuinely threatened to take down Loyola in an excellent match in Palo Alto. They're the real thing. The Bruins' very good season ends; the Nighthawks advance to the finals.

Prep Water Polo: 2010 CIF-CCS semifinal predictions

Boys' Division 1: This will be quick. Bellarmine and St. Francis are simply the better squads, with depth, versatility, and defensive pressure that will be too much for Leland and Serra to overcome despite Leland's upset win over Menlo-Atherton. See you two in the finals.
Boys' Division 2: Sacred Heart Prep will advance over Soquel, which played well against Valley Christian, but not well enough to threaten the Gators. Los Altos vs. Menlo is the best match of the boys' semifinal evening. Menlo grabbed the number two seed in the bracket and demolished Live Oak in the quarterfinals. But Los Altos has more size and hard-to-stop Colin Mulcahy. Los Altos wins in a very mild upset.
Girls' Division 1: Menlo-Atherton and St. Francis will meet in the final again.
Girls' Division 2: St. Ignatius from San Francisco won't be able to keep up with Sacred Heart Prep. But Castilleja vs. Los Altos should be an excellent match. In this case the public school wins out - Los Altos will go on to face SHP in the finals.

Boys Prep Water Polo: Notes from the North/South Tournament

A tumultuous weekend of California boys water polo is ended, including a bit of revenge for Mater Dei, which topped El Toro by one goal to win the North-South Tournament Championship in Atherton. And while the final match was merely decent, the level of play throughout the tournament, overall, was shockingly good. Some notes and observations:

Murrieta Valley, as one coach agreed, was an intriguing mystery at the start of the tournament. They largely proved to be among the best in the state having genuinely challenged Loyola in an excellent first-day match, which they eventually dropped by two goals, and in charging back to beat Miramonte Saturday morning. They played a very flat (tired?) final game against Dos Pueblos and still lost only by one. They are a team of very few surprises tactically, but execute and shoot quite well. Who thought, just a few years ago, that a team based midway between Escondido and Corona would be among the nation's best? This is good news for the sport.
Bishop's placed fourth after losing to a simply better Loyola squad in their final match. But in some ways they were the most entertaining squad - something of a throwback with their set pieces in after goal and man-up situations. Clever tactics and very good discipline, especially with defensive positioning, keep them in games in which they would otherwise be uncompetitive.
The quality of play among the elite Mater Dei and El Toro squads (Loyola too, really) was brilliant, but resulted in a somewhat limp final match with fairly unidimensional offenses. Two-meter play was excellent and Brett Bonani is a sparkling shooter (quickest release I've ever seen). But isolation-based front court offense can be tedious even when executed well.
I think it was Tony Kornheiser of the Washington Post who once wrote that San Diego should be awarded the Super Bowl every year. I feel the same way about Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton. Every high school tournament should be held there.
Who's number 1? Mater Dei beats El Toro. ET takes down Loyola. Corona del Mar knocks off Newport in the Battle of the Bay. Murrieta Valley plays well among the State's finest. Miramonte falls to both El Toro and Murrieta Valley… So which is the best in the State? Make your choice in the poll at the left.
