We’ve been following the launch of AirService 2.0 very closely over recent months. For those who don’t know, AirService is a Mobile Ordering Platform, that is so versatile, it works in almost any venue. AirService allows venues customers to check-in with their iPhone, immediately view the menu and order instantly. Orders are then sent either to the venues POS system, or AirService’s own Docket app which runs on iPad. With the stealth beta of AirService 1.0 running across 20+ venues in Australia, AirService then partnered with PayPal, and started to work on the next version of the mobile ordering platform. Now in 2013, AirService is poised for scalable growth internationally.

“Hotels are currently the main focus for the launch of AirService 2.0″, says Stefan Williams, Co-Founder, “but with the new features 2.0 offers, we will be opening out in to some new and very interesting sectors in the next few weeks…”

Williams declined to comment what those actual ‘new and very interesting sectors’ are, however we did manage to get a demo of the new AirService for iPhone app, alongside Docket, their new POS-esque iPad app.

AirService is now taking venue pre-registrations at their website. Venues wishing to try AirService, should hurry, round 1 pre-registrations filled up in just 1 day.

When Apple unveiled the iPad in 2010, smartphone vendors were caught off guard and they rushed to launch similar tablets to take advantage of the new market that had been created. Their early efforts were absolutely awful, however. Android slates have gotten much, much better since those early days and now Android vendors’ combined tablet market share looks ready to pass Apple’s share. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company isn’t done setting trends though, and its iPad mini is the latest device Android vendors will look to base their new models on moving forward.

According to Digitimes’ unnamed industry sources, we can expect a flood of new tablets sized to compete with Apple’s iPad mini. Since smartphone screens are approaching — and sometimes surpassing — the 6-inch mark, demand for 7-inch tablets is seen waning. Customers still want smaller, cheaper tablets though, and the 8-inch range is apparently the sweet spot.

Since the second-generation iPad mini will include a high-resolution Retina display, Apple rivals are also already working on panels with improved pixel densities. According to the report, however, pixel-hungry displays could pose a problem.

“The vendors also plan to make increased resolutions a major focal point in 2014, the sources said, Digitimes’ Sammi Huang and Alex Wolfgram wrote. ”However, recent demand from vendors asking panel makers to produce more IPS/FFS panels has caused panel shipment bottlenecks in the market, as the makers’ production yields have dropped as a result of producing the advanced technology. For panel makers producing panels with even higher resolutions means they might face even more bottlenecks through the year, causing panel supply to possibly be in even tighter supply in 2014, the sources added.”

According to data from Canaccord Genuity, Apple and Samsung managed to capture 100% of the mobile industry’s profits last quarter. In the first quarter of 2013, Apple took home 57% of the global smartphone industry’s profits, while Samsung grabbed almost 43% to leave nothing for BlackBerry, Nokia or HTC. In fact, the only company that managed a mobile profit share above 0% was LG with its 1% share. Even at nearly 100%, however, Apple and Samsung’s share of mobile profit has actually declined from last year. The research firm previously reported that the two companies captured 103% of handset industry profits in 2012.

“Due to operating losses from smaller scale competitors trying to compete, Apple and Samsung’s combined share of industry profits have exceeded 100 percent in previous quarters,” Canaccord Genuity T. Michael Walkley said, according to AllThingsD. “While Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the share of industry profits, improving cost structures and results from other OEMs have reduced Apple and Samsung’s combined share to 100 percent from levels above 100 percent the past several quarters.”

Samsung has slowly eaten away at Apple’s profits over the past few quarter. The research firm notes that Samsung is now on track to surpass Apple for the largest share of smartphone industry profits within the next few months.

“During the June quarter, we believe softer iPhone sales combined with strong Samsung Galaxy S4 sales could result in Samsung surpassing Apple for the top share of handset industry profits,” Walkley said.

Although iPhone sales are expected to soften in the coming months, the launch of the iPhone 5S will likely jolt Apple back into the lead.

Heard someone on the bus say something ridiculous, pop it on Eavesdrop. Other users then have the option to up vote or down vote your post. Think of it like Reddit, but for the masses of commuters.

The app has just hit the App Store, so users are low, but get started with it, and you’ll find its very fun.

Apple’s iPhones were found to be nearly three times more reliable than Samsung’s smart phones, according to a FixYa study.

Using 722,558 combined problem impressions, FixYa calculated scores by taking manufacturer problem impressions divided by sample problem impressions (impression ratio), normalizing market share amongst competitors for comparison (sample market share, combined total is 100%), and dividing sample market share by impression ratio.

Apple scored 3.47 for reliability; whereas, Samsung scored 1.21. Higher is better.

Here is what the study said about Apple devices….

Pros:

Dead Simple UI — FixYa users enjoy the “sleekness” and “simplicity” of the Apple experience, comparing it favorably with other phone manufacturers. A simple UI that everyone from grandmothers to small children can use is definitely a calling card of all iPhone devices and something that Apple has historically been very cognizant of when designing their products. There were nearly no complaints from FixYa users about the usability or confusing nature of the iPhone device.
Reliability — FixYa users lauded the reliability of the iPhone, stating that it is almost always working as intended in regards to core features and never hits a constant roadblock with one feature. This isn’t to say there were no complaints about the product. Rather, it’s an indication that the issues weren’t showstoppers and rarely continued to crop up consistently on a weekly basis.
App Ecosystem — Considering Apple essentially pioneered the appstore model, this is a logical pro of the device. While users on Android or Windows Phone ecosystems had complaints about a specific app not being available (although this is becoming less of an issue each day), iPhone users did not. If there’ s an app you want, it’ s going to be available on the Apple App Store.

Cons:

Lack of customizability — The iPhone’s simple UI is a double-edged sword. While the majority of FixYa users praised the company for its ease of use, some consumers wanted a greater ability to customize the device to their liking while retaining the simple design they enjoy. Apple has notoriously been very closed with their devices, with users essentially getting the full range of functionality out of the box. That works for the majority of consumers, but if you’re a techie and want to add more layers into your personal smartphone experience, the iPhone may not be the best choice for you.
Battery life — Anyone familiar with the issues surrounding the iPhone4S should be familiar with this complaint. It’s a common refrain amongst Apple users, as a large number of iPhone owners on FixYa have raised the issue when looking for ways to conserve battery life. If you have access to a wall outlet at some point throughout the day this may not be a problem, but anyone who goes on a day-long trip, is using their smartphone to stream music, or send email all day, will find a problem with how long the device lasts off of a single charge.
Lack of new features with new models: Everyone wants the hot new gadget when it comes to market, and the fanfare surrounding iPhone releases speaks for itself. However, users who have upgraded their old iPhones to new versions felt that the additions to the device and experience were lackluster in nature. Consumers have higher expectations nowadays which may be an issue for Apple. As the old adage goes, “it’s what you’ve done for me lately” that counts. It should be noted however that users who are on their first iPhone don’t have any issues here — it appears to be the multi-device owners that feel the bar needs to be raised at a faster pace.

While the publication has been hit-or-miss with Apple hardware rumors in the past, its track record with display-centric reports has been fairly accurate.

If Apple adopts the Retina display, not only will the cost of the panel increase, but other parts as well, including an upgraded LED backlight to compensate for the increased pixel density. All told, the Retina display is estimated to raise the iPad mini’s BOM by more than 30 percent.

Research firm IHS iSuppli in November conducted a teardown of the then-new iPad mini and estimated the 7.9-inch tablet’s innards to cost Apple $188. Without factoring in labor costs, the low-end 16GB Wi-Fi only model is yielding 43 percent profit margins on the high end, with the 32GB and 64GB versions bringing in margins of up to 52 percent and 56 percent, respectively.

Of the components, the iPad mini’s screen was the most expensive item at $80, representing about 43 percent of the total BOM. Costs for the panel are likely to have decreased due to increased production ramp.

It is unclear if Apple will raise the price of the iPad mini if and when the company decides to release a Retina display model, though when an identical spec bump came to the 9.7-inch iPad, consumer cost remain unchanged.

The publication goes on to say that the global market is looking to move 180-240 million 7-inch form factor tablets in 2013, accounting for 45-60 percent of total shipments.
