Ramayana Dance Performance, Prambanan Temple (Open Air), Yogyakarta

This is the dance performance of Indonesia traditional dancer with background of Prambanan Temple, the epic story of marvelous visualization of legendary epos in Javanese culture, "Ramayana", when Rahwana (the devil) is kidnapping Shinta (story-tale Princess), and Hanoman (a giant white monkey) helps Rama (the Prince) to release Shinta. The dance is usually performed in Trimurti Open Air Theater inside the Prambanan Temple (Unesco World Heritage Site), which is able to unite various Javanese arts such as dance, drama and music on one stage.

You will see not only the dance but also interesting acts such as fireball game and acrobat. The fireball game is presented when Hanoman that initially would be fired alive turned to be successful in burning Alengkadiraja Kingdom owned by Rahwana. The acrobat is seen when Hanoman fights against Rahwana's followers. The fireball when Shinta would be burned is also interesting to see.

Construction of this bridge started in April 1962, after obtaining approval from President Sukarno. Construction costs were taken from Japan’s war reparation funds. Not only the cost, even this bridge using experts from those countries. Bridge dedication was made in 1965, and also reinforced the Bung Karno name as the name of the bridge. At that time, this bridge is the longest bridge in South East Asia. After political upheaval in 1966, when the anti-Sukarno very strong, the bridge’s name was changed to the Ampera bridge (Amanat Penderitaan Rakyat or People’s Mandate Suffering in English).

For a few years after it was opened, the center span could be lifted at 10 meters per second to allow ships of up to 44.5m in height to pass underneath. However this only occurred a few times, and after 1970 it could no longer be opened. The official reason for this was that the 30 minutes needed to raise the bridge was causing unacceptable delays, and that in any case silting of the river had made it impassable for large ships. However, said architect Wiratman who acted as a consultant before the construction, the design of the bridge was flawed from the outset because of the soft mud on which it was built. He maintains that his concerns were ignored for political reasons, and that as the towers' foundations shifted, the bridge deformed to the extent that it could no longer be opened. The ballast weights needed to balance the weight of the bridge were removed in 1990 to prevent possible accidents were they to fall.

Off-shore north from Jakarta's beach there are small islands called Kepulauan Seribu (the Thousand islands). They are part of the North Jakarta city government. As a tourist destination, Pulau Seribu is one of favorite destination for coral reef attraction besides Bunaken, Raja Ampat, and Karimunjawa. It has the misfortune to lie immediately offshore from a conurbation of 20 million people and the combined effects of land-based pollution and sedimentation are wreaking havoc in the fragile reef ecosystem of Jakarta Bay. Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands) is made up of 110 islands scattered in a vertical group to the north of Jakarta in the Java Sea.

Many of the islands provide resort type accommodation and are a popular spot for divers living in Jakarta. Accommodation ranges from up-market international resorts to rustic bungalows on several islands. Most resort rates include the cost of boat travel and meals. The Dive possibilities are almost countless. Reefs surround many of the 110 islands and you can expect to find good coral growth and a variety of fish life including Turtles, Moray Eels, large Cuttlefish and Stingrays. There are well preserved wrecks accessible from several of the resorts.

Karimunjawa Island, which located about 400 km northwest of Jepara in Central Java, is a beautiful archipelago in Java Sea. Jepara,a historical city, located 83 km away from Semarang, the capital of Central Java. Within the clusters of 27 islands, Karimunjawa is known for its amazing fringing coral reefs, diving sites, and sandy beaches. The reefs are a mixture of fringing, barrier, and patch with bottom depths ranging from 15 to 40 meters.

Karimunjawa is an island chain stretching in a north Semarang direction 45 mile from Semarang Central Java. Semarang can be reached by 3 hours drive from Yogjakarta. This archipelago is a cluster of 27 island in the java sea. The reefs are a mixture of fringing, barrier, and patch with bottom depths ranging from 15 to 40 meters.

There are nice resorts on 5 inhabited islands offering diving facilities. Visitors can reach Karimunjawa by plane from Semarang, the provincial capital of Central Java. It takes about 30 minutes flight to reach the islands from Semarang. Visitors can also reach Karimunjawa by speed boat from Semarang or Jepara in 3 hours. The best time to visit the Karimunjawa islands is from April through November.

For those who have that adventurous streak in them, Karimunjawa Islands can be an exciting destination. The wreck diving at the island of Batu Kunci, Karang Kapal, Karang Ketel and Batulawang can be a thrilling sport.
Wreck diving is a type of recreational diving where shipwrecks are explored. Although most wreck dive sites are at shipwrecks, there is an increasing trend to install retired ships to create artificial dive sites.
Till date, Karimunjawa islands have 12 dive sites.
Most of the diving is done on the fringing reefs around the islands, as well as on the submerged reefs and shipwrecks.
All the sites are located to the west of the main island.
Five of the 27 islands are domestically inhabited and together with 22 others form the four major zones.
The first zone is the main sanctuary area and is out of bounds to all.
The second zone is the wilderness area open to limited tourism.
The third zone is the utilization area while the fourth zone is the buffer zone.
The information staffs are known for their helpful and co-operative assistance. Expect to get a very pleasant welcome as you enter.
The main attraction at Karimunjawa Islands is the exciting range of flora and fauna above and below the water.
The reefs hold as many as 35 types of hard corals, sponges, gorgonian, soft and red corals and an amazing 240 plus variety of fish.

I suddenly remember a journey our family took, over ten years ago to Bangka Island. We stayed at a beach resort, which was amazingly close to the white sand. I was with my siblings, only around 10 years-old, but I can remember vividly the striking green water, in contrast with the tremendously beautiful azure blue sky and perfect white sand.

The water was fresh and the wind was cool, even at day time. To my surprise the beach was very very extra clean, unlike many other beaches in Indonesia. Moreover the food at the local food stall are mostly good and cheap in comparison to Jakarta's price.

So, what are you waiting for? Go there this weekend and embrace fresh air for your health....

When the fasting month arrives in Indonesia, you will experience the most fascinating cullinary season all over the archipelago, especially those areas where moslems are abundant. As I visit two cities in Java this year, my main focus were not merely the food (we are still fasting the during the day) so I also visited old mosques and cemetery complex, notedly the area of Kota Gede. As shown bellow the old Mosque in Kota Gede is still very simple compared to the one near Alun-alun Utara (north piazza of Jogja).

Anyways... during the afternoon, food stalls at Kauman area will be livid (the word derived from the word Kaum; people who are responsible to take care of the Mosque). There you will find food stalls of varieties of food, from snacks, light dinner, dinner, juices and my favorite: Iced Kopyor (a variety of coconut) with brown sugar syrup. Mmm... These are off course mostly packed to be taken home, since it is the normal gesture to honor those who are fasting.

The next day I went to Solo to fulfill my urged to taste the city's specialty, but after I taste the a Marrocan delicacy: Roasted Lamb with Wedang Jahe (Ginger Tea). The area is a nice pedestrian with umbrelas, near the city centre, just on the side of the court wall (Beteng) Jalan Galabo, today the building in front of it is called PGS.

After that, the closing was a very delicious Nasi Liwet treat at Wongso Lemu completed harmonious with traditional music. A perfect night with full stomach and happy heart.

As the place it self is hidden far away from the crowded and jubilant city of Semarang, Central Java, one could easily rest and relax with the warm and gentle breeze from the Sea. We could see the open vast Sea that connect the strait between Java to Borneo.

The food was great, also the selection of traditional and refreshing drinks. Fine selection of seafood cuisines, delicate in taste, also good vegetarian foods. The water spinach dish is highly recommended. Whether it is a romantic dinner or a family gathering, the place could accommodate both ambiances.

What is more to it, the architecture of the compound also is eclectic. It has the tendency to use traditional thatched roofs ad stilt structures, combined with wood works meticulously which enhance the beauty of the space. During night time, the lights from the lighted torches also illuminate a fantastic cozy atmosphere. So, it is a highly recommended place for a dinner by the Sea ;)

The development of Tawang Railway Station marked with ceremonial ground soil by the Governor-General, Mr. Baron Sloet van de Beele, along with the establishment of the railway system, 16 June 1864. wich connecting Semarang - Yogyakarta - Solo. Tawang Railway Station was designed by J.P de Bordes, Netherland

There were only few changes were made on this station, especially on the facade. Until now Tawang Station is still well maintained by PT. Kereta Api Indonesia. There are field in front of the station Tawang (now it became a polder to accomodate the rain water in the surrounding area) also has a high historical value that is as open space from the city long used as a place of the ceremony, sports, and so on.

There are the visual axis connecting the station with the Catholic Church (Blenduk). So that the role of this station in the formation of the image of the area is very important and is able to increase the value of the area. Unique architecture, with Indische architectural characteristics on material element to the wall pattern and color make this building beaceme very aesthetic. From the point of the city landscape, Tawang Station makes the better quality and potential for the open space in the surrounding area.

Charms of Ubud, the Inner Bali

While Ubud seems to outsiders like one small town with 14 villages, each run by its own banjar (the land-owning married men's association; in effect the local government).

It's clear that Ubud has grown rapidly and some central parts are coping less well with tourists than in previous years (although the drop in visitors following 9/11 and the Kuta bombings slowed development)

Central Ubud has three main streets, Jl. Raya Ubud (the "Main Road" of Ubud), Jl. Monkey Forest and Jl. Hanoman. At the intersection of Jl. Raya and Jl. Monkey Forest is the Ubud Market, the Ubud Palace and the main bemo (public transport) stops.

The area is sometimes referred to as the "craft villages" of Bali, though the area is a bit more built-up and congested than one might infer from the term "village." The whole scene has become rather commercialized. But still it's the best area to see a wide variety of the best Balinese craftwork in a short period of time.

Tirta Empul, Tampaksiring, 20 km northeast from Ubud. One of the holiest temples on Bali, built around hot springs that now bubble eerily in the central courtyard. Between Sanur and Ubud The road to Ubud from the south passes a series of small towns which specialize in the production of particular arts and crafts, including Batubulan (stone carving), Celuk (jewelry), Batuan (painting), and Mas (wood carving). The area has many large showrooms where arts and crafts in the Balinese style are offered for sale.

The 2008 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival will take place from the 14-19 October. The theme of this year's Festival is Tri Hita Karana - the Balinese concept of balancing Man, Nature, God.

This annual celebration of international and Asian literature is centred in the small hill town of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. Ubud is generally recognised as being one of the most important artistic and cultural centres in Indonesia.

Things not to miss: going to spas, wellness centres incl yoga places, stay at some of the locals' owned homestay, go to Antonio Blanco's gallery, see dance performances.
