Domestic tourism is growing in Eat African countries of Kenya,Uganda, Tanzania,Rwanda and Burundi. East African tour operators and experts say domestic tourism is slowly catching up . All East African tourism experts and government agency, reported that in the first half of 2012, the number of domestic tourists was higher compared to the same period last year.

The number of tourism-related agencies also has grown. There are currently increaing number of organisations with a tourism licensed in all 5 countries in East Africa. With more than Organisations are getting established in the past year. “The licenses are very difficult to obtain, and it is even more difficult to keep up with the competition and stay afloat,”said some of the directors of Travel industry.

However, according to them, it is worth the risk, because interest is growing and this year has seen the number of customers at his firm jump 25% from last year.
Robinson runs his own small travel company, which, in addition to the standard services, offers city tours, gorilla safaris, Hiking and holidays in East africa “Generally the city tours are offered on weekends, have a special theme, and are quite affordable,” he said.
His marketing method has also allowed him cheap advertisement. “I advertise the tours on the company’s website: www.riverpaktravel.com and on a social network page, and generally the people themselves invite their friends and family so they can spend quality time together,” James said the marketing director his business has built a solid following.
“I almost never miss a tour organized Riverpark Travel, and there are many others like me. We even organized a Facebook group of Hikers enthusiasts, and as a result people are becoming more interested in the history of our home town and region interest in the history of the region.”

HRC Burundi offers extensive experience in preparing and implementing tourism strategies - more than 30 to date - and in researching and preparing business plans for many types of destination, from national to local level; from metropolitan cities to rural regions.

We believe that the process for preparing a destination's tourism strategy should be relatively simple and based round three questions: 'where are we now?', 'where do we want to be in X years time?' and 'how are we going to get there?'.

Of paramount relevance here is the experience of many of HRC Burundi's personnel as senior managers within DMOs. We have prepared many DMO strategies and business plans 'from the inside' and have made them work successfully in practice. We know well the challenges and the opportunities involved, particularly for those that have to generate substantial commercial income to fund their programmes.

Our preference is for business planning work to be set within the context of a destination's tourism strategy and action plan. a.) HISTORICAL TOUR OF BURUNDI, RUVUBU NATIONAL PARK, LOCAL FISHERMEN.

Day1:
Arrive Bujumbura

Half day tour in Bujumbura, a visit to the Living museum (Musee vivant), visit of Buyenzi Muslim city with its different activities mechanics, local general goods market ,Belvedere Climb offering a nice view of Bujumbura city and Lake Tanganyika, Independence hero monument.

Dinner and overnight at (HOTEL) on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day2:
Cultural Tour of Bujumbura Morning, we visit Rusizi national park where there is a possible boat tour in Rusizi river can let you explore closer the hippo , numerous birds and the joining point between Rusizi River and Lake Tanganyika. After we visit explorers Memorial, a huge rock in the Suburbs of Bujumbura commemorating the meeting between explorers Stanley and Livingstone. A visit to a local general goods market, the craft centre and downtown Bujumbura. Dinner and overnight at a Hotel on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day3:
Gitega – Gishora

After breakfast visit of the drum sanctuary of Gishora. Gishora this is one of the famous drum sites of Burundi. Gishora is perched on the top of a hill at 7km from the urban centre of Gitega The site of Gishora also houses two ritual drums that were never beaten : Ruciteme (the one for whom we clear the forest) and Murimirwa (the one for whom we cultivate). The two names are intimately linked to the farming vocation and refer clearly to the fertility, characteristic of the king. We have also ordinary drums which the Batimbo could beat on special occasions of the country.

Visit the drum sanctuary of Gishora to relive the cultural tradition of Burundi which is becoming scarcer. The site recreates an architectural complex of Royal palace, rarely found elsewhere in the country. Get there a lot of information will be provided by Mr. Antime who has travelled a lot of countries across the world exhibiting the image of Burundi with his drum.

Here drummers performance can be watched . Lunch at Gitega city .After lunch ,visit of the city .Gitega is the second largest town of the country, with its typical colonial architecture. It hosts the National Museum with its ethnographic and archaeological collections

Dinner and overnight at a Hotel

Day4:
Ruvubu National Park After breakfast head to Ruvubu National Park. The lower valley of Ruvubu river is an open savannah, with swamps and forests. Among the animals in this area, you might see antelopes, buffaloes, monkeys and there are listed over 425 birds’ species. The river is home to large number of hippos and crocodiles. The national park offers possibilities of nature walks and sightseeing especially in the Northern sector. Packed lunch. In the evening return to Gitega, for dinner and overnight at a Hotel.

Day5:
Nyanza and Kigwena Forest- After breakfast, drive southwards to the region of Nyanza, characterized by the large palm trees plantations and the production of oil. Visit the sites of the local palm oil production. Stop over in Kigwena Forest reserve for a nature walk. You might see monkeys including the owl faced monkeys and baboons, many birds’ species

Lunch, visit of the local fishermen at Nyanza Lac .

Dinner and overnight at Hotel.

Day6:
After breakfast ,visit of the Hot springs of Mugara. The hot springs of Mugara comprise two descending sources that come out the ground in hot gushes to slide down the steep slopes of the rocky site, before forming a true basin far downstream of their course and then continue their itinerary mixed with another source of natural water in the common passage that will channel them to the lake Tanganyika, their last outlet.

An authentic hot (swimming) pool with 48 degree Celsius, this basin is acknowledged by the neighbouring and even distant population since time immemorial for its therapeutic quality against rheumatism and indigestion.

After visit of hot springs, we take our direction to Bujumbura; stop over for Lunch at Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort where a time of fishing can be spent ,with an appropriate boat and other equipment .

Dinner and sleep over at Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort.

Day7:
Airport transfer

b.) CITY TOUR OF BUJUMBURA, BIRDING TOUR , KARERA FALLS, HISTORICAL TOUR: GISHORA DRUMS SANCTUARY.

Day1:

The trip continues to Nyanza, characterized by the large palm trees plantations and the production of oil. Visit of the local fishermen. Lunch at Nyanza lac where local Agasimbo dancers of Makamba can perform.

Drive back to Rumonge for overnight at Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort.

Day5:
Birds watching tour -Kirundo

On the road leading to Kirundo, we will stop not far from Bugarama to see splendid tea plantations at Teza before we arrive at Kirundo, Lunch in the city center.

After lunch visit of the birds’ lakes .Kirundo a region of extensive depressions dotted with many lakes and abounding in bird life. It is an area of great scenic beauty where the visitor may discover, by canoe, such lakes as Cohoha, the bird Lake, renowed for its ornithological reserve; and other lakes like Kacamirinda and Kanzigiri.

Dinner at Kirundo and overnight at the city Hotel.

Day6:
After breakfast ,drive back to Bujumbura ,lunch at a Hotel, and enjoy facilities like swimming pool ,gym , sauna .

EAC sets passport, tourist visa targets

To travel within the East African region, EAC citizens do not require visas, just a valid national passport or the East African passport that was launched in April 2009.

The regional passport, issued at the respective offices in the EAC partner states, has a six months’ multiple entry validity — one of the privileges it accords the holder. The passport costs $10 or the equivalent in the local currency.

Lac Tanganyika

For East African citizens who may require to travel from one EAC state to another and who cannot be readily issued with a passport, they must acquire an admissible temporary document. The document, known as the certificates of identity or inter-state passes, is issued by local immigration authorities and can be used to travel in the region.

However, EAC citizens will soon not require the passports or passes as the region plans to introduce an almost restriction-free system of crossing the border. This will require the use of electronic readable identification cards as stipulated in the Common Market Protocol.

The Common Market Protocol provides for the use of a machine readable national identity card for travel within the EAC, but only for citizens of those partner states that have accepted the use of such cards among themselves. Kenya and Rwanda are currently the only countries in the region that use electronic readable identity cards.

A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required at all ports of entry into Tanzania from all the citizens from the EAC partners and outside the region.
Visa exemptions apply for nationals from selected Comesa and SADC countries in each of the EAC partner states.

There are ongoing efforts for a single visa policy for the EAC that shall make intra-EAC travel for non-East Africans much easier by allowing them to use, anywhere in the region, a visa acquired in any of the EAC partner states.

Buffalo in Burundi

East Africans are also allowed to drive private cars across borders and across the entire EAC region, free of charge, for visits no longer than seven days. All you have to do is fill a form at border crossing points that grants you the free access.

In this case, there is no need of a new licence to drive in another EAC country. Driver’s licences from any of the partner states apply anywhere in the EAC region so long as they are valid.

Due to a series of inter-operator roaming agreements, East African residents may use their local mobile phone numbers, sometimes without incurring roaming charges while in another EAC partner state.

THE WONDER OF THE WORLD

Lake Tanganyika

On a total area of 32000km², Lake Tanganyika is classified a priori the longest lake in the world, stretching over nearly 670km from north to south (50 km of average width).
With a record of the second deepest lake in the world after Baikal, it is over 1400m deep. Bottom sedimentary layers are at 6000m deep. Lake Tanganyika is the second largest reservoir of fresh water in Africa with 18800km² after Lake Victoria.

Biodiversity is very remarkable, and there are over 1300 plant and animal species identified from microscopic algae to crocodiles, over 300 species of large and small fish, invertebrates, plants among them about 500 are endemic. This rich biodiversity is of paramount importance all over the world.

The Nile source

The source of Nile River is located 115km from Bujumbura at the bottom of Kibimbi massif. This source is known as the southernmost source of the sources of the Nile. It is currently viewed as the origin of the Nile. The place is foreshadowed by a signpost and a pyramid located on Mount Gikizi’s slope (2145). The source is below about fifty meters from a car park.

From the commemorative pyramid located some fifty meters above the source, excursions can be organized through nearby hills (Mount Gikizi and Kibimbi).

Northern cross-border Lakes

This region is at about 200km from Bujumbura. It groups the main lakes: KANZIGIRI, RWERU, COHOHA and RWIHINDA.

Lake Rweru (10,200 ha) is shared between Burundi and Rwanda. It is the largest lake of the northern lakes (80km2 with 70% for Burundi). Surrounded by marshes and papyrus, it has floating islands which are unfortunately increasingly invaded by hyacinth.
Lake Cohoha covers an area of 7850 ha and it is one of the most attractive areas of cross-border t lakes with Yaranda beach, agricultural banks and papyrus.
Lake Rwihinda is one of the smallest lakes (425 ha), but it is the most famous: it is known as "Lake of Birds", a protected area located less than one kilometer from Kirundo county town. It presents hilly and swampy landscapes.
Lake Kanzigiri (750 ha) has a beautiful beach and a magnificent view.

Parcs and Reserves

Burundi has three national parks:

1. Kibira National Park

Kibira, the land of the famous chimpanzees. Accompanied by an experienced guide, you will discover inside the charm of this authentic rainforest. Here are hidden places still unexplored. There is nothing quite like immersing yourself in the exceptional ecosystem this park offers: chimpanzees,towering ancient sun dappled trees, astonishing waterfalls and the sources of Burundi’s great rivers await you. At the edge of Kibira forest, the tea plantations of Teza, streaked with rustic paths, unroll before your eyes like a verdant carpet. A walk through these plantations is a pure delight, and a unique opportunity to experience some of the most beautiful landscapes of Burundi.

2. Ruvubu National Park

Alternating hills and wooded gallery forests, this park contains all that remains of the fauna of the savannas of Burundi, once abundant and varied, but has ceded most of its fields to humans. One can still observe: hippopotamus, buffalo, antelope, waterbuck, bushbuck, giant forest hog, colobus monkeys, bush pigs, warthogs, baboons, monkeys, duikers, baboons etc ... ... and an even wider variety of birds.

3. Rusizi National Park

Subdivided into sectors and sector Palmeraie, with as rich a rich flora, even in endemic species (Hyphaene bengellesis ie) and the Delta area, the wetland serves as a breeding place for many birds migrateurs.C is therefore to Once an area of scientific interest, area and rest area discovered on the outskirts of Bujumbura.

Reserves and protected areas

Include the forest Kigwena nature reserve, the source of the Nile, the forest Bururi natural reserve , that of Monge, and Rumonge ,the Rwihinda managed nature reserve,flaws Nyakazu natural monument , the falls Karera natural monument , at Mukungu-Rukambasi landscapes protected , Mabanda-Nyanza-Lac, and Gisagara Kunusu.

Forest reserves

1. Forest reserve of Kigwena

Kigwena Forest is one of the oldest protected nature reserves of Burundi. It stands for the only sample of mesophilic forest. It is a dense forest, even impenetrable in some areas.

2. Forest reserve of Rumonge

Located 5km from Rumonge city, at an altitude of 850m, this nature reserve is home to a sparse forest of 600ha. Many ants are found in this reserve with sometimes impressive size: up to 4m wide and high. The reserve is also home to primates and antelopes. As far as reptiles are concerned, several species are listed including: green mambas and pythons. We also find there a multitude of birds.

3. Forest reserve of Bururi

Located in the massif of Bururi overlooking the city in the west, this reserve is home to a rainforest mountain between 1700m to 2304m. In terms of its wildlife, the reserve has strong similarities with Kibira as it pertains to the system of the Congo-Nile, in its most southern part. However, its less humid climate and less variety of fauna, but also other species such as endemic plants make it particular. For now, some 250 plant species have been identified in the reserve, some are typical of dense forests, others of sparse forests. The identified fauna includes a number of monkeys (many Cercopithecus) and several carnivore species. The most interesting and the rarest to contemplate among the latter, but unfortunately now endangered, is the panther. Birds are very numerous and represent a key attraction of the park: there are over 117 species, some are endemic. Since November 2009, a group of 40chimpanzees was identified, it is a good opportunity to get them used to the visits of tourist groups and enhance the reserve as well.

Drums Shrine

Founded by Ntare Rugamba,one of the former Burundi’s kings, Gishora is one of the areas of the most famous drummers in Burundi. It is perched on a hilltop at 7 km from Gitega city center and 200 m from the road Gitega-Ngozi.

The site was and is still run by a local community known as "Abatimbo". The shrine for Gishora drums revives Burundi’s cultural tradition. It restores a kingship architectural complex of the country. The renowned drummers form the “heart” of culture and legacy beating in the center of Burundi.

Waterfalls

Karera waterfalls are located in the south-eastern region of Burundi- Rutana Province- submerged into a forest gallery which is home to large trees. The falls form a system of waterfalls of a fascinating beauty as you travel through different paths. They are divided into six branches and spread over three levels.

Thermal springs

The thermal springs are spread over in a fantastic way throughout the territory of Burundi. They are found, for example; in the northwest at Ruhwa; in the north at Rwegura; or in the center at Gisagara. But the main part seems to be concentrated in the south, on Mount Kibimbi’s base where you find the thermal springs of Muhweza and Muyange, which are considered the most renowned of the country; while a long way there is a thermal source of Mugara.

Germans’ faults

A few miles from Rutana as the crow flies, a magnificent landscape occasioned by a great collapse through which extends a spectacular panorama of the vast depression of Kumoso. There are a few stones from the old boma that the Germans had built while fleeing from the Belgian forces, the reason why the name of " Germans’ faults. "
