Fritschi Fountain

Be sure to have a closer look on Fritschi Fountain (built 1918) on Kapellplatz. Though actually less than 100 years old, the fountain stands in the tradition of much older Renaissance style fountains with painted allegoric figures on top. You may find such fountains in any major Swiss city, particularly famous are the eleven fountains in the Swiss capital Bern.

Legendary brother Fritschi plays an important role in Lucerne's Carnival tradition. Brother Fritschi's grave is supposed to be under this fountain, on the medieval graveyard attached to St. Peter's Chapel. No one knows who Brother Fritschi really was. The legend goes back to around 1450 and the most probable explanation is that there was a farmer (or farmhand) living outside town making jokes whenever he came to town. Medieval town clerk and chronist Cysat reports that Fritschi left some money to the Safran guild on condition that they serve wine to the poor during Fasacht. The guild is still fullfilling this obligation today and has dedicated one storey of their guild rooms in Nölliturm to Brother Fritschi (the location is not open to the public, however).

After his death, Brother Fritschi remained very popular and was portrayed in many different ways. Among others, a figure made of straw with the features of an old man represented him. In earlier centuries, groups of young people from the other member towns of the old Swiss confederacy used to visit one of the other towns about once a year, have some sports competition and drink lots of beer and wine. Often a town's mascot, a flag etc. were kidnapped during such visits so that the hosts would have a reason to visit the town of the kidnappers soon. So Brother Fritschi as a straw figure saw some other Swiss towns ...

Today two young members of the guilds dress as Brother Fritschi and his wife (the "Fritschine") on Fasnacht Thursday (Schmotzige Donschtig) for the opening ceremony.

In earlier centuries the town ended here with a wall and a gate, and the famous wooden Chapel Bridge, now ending here, had a second part leading over shallow water to Hof Church where you now can walk under chestnut trees along the new lake shore. Both bridges were part of the fortifications. Today, there is only one tower left at Schwanenplatz. Other parts of the fortifications, namely the Musegg Wall on the north side of the medieval town, have been preserved, however. We will see some of its prominent towers during our tour.

Our tour starts right at the pedestrian crossing, we go straight to the west and the second building on the left side is St. Peter's Chapel, situated at Kapellplatz.

First mentioned in 1356, Kornmarkt was the grain market place of the city until the 19th century. The ground floor of the town hall served as a grain storage from 1438, from 1447 on the upper parts of the building served as town hall. Today the city administration is located on the other side of River Reuss, but there are still some official activities, for example marriage ceremonies (which have to take place in front of a town clerk to be valid under Swiss law).

The Swiss Alps (German: Schweizer Alpen, French: Alpes suisses, Italian: Alpi svizzere, Romansh: Alps svizras) are the portion of the Alps mountain range that lies within Switzerland. Because of their central position with the entire Alpine range, they are also known as the Central Alps.
The highest summit in the Swiss Alps is the Dufourspitze (4,634 metres (15,202 ft)) near the Swiss-Italian border. The highest mountain which lies entirely on Swiss territory is the Dom (4,545 metres (14,911 ft)). Other main summits can be found in the list of mountains in Switzerland.

Louis the German in 853 granted his lands in the Reuss River valley to the monastery of St Felix and Regula in Zürich (modern day Fraumünster) of which his daughter Hildegard was the first abbess. According to legend this occurred after a stag bearing an illuminated crucifix between his antlersappeared to him in the marshland outside the town, at the shore of Lake Zürich. However, there is evidence that the monastery was already in existence before 853. The Fraumünster is across the river from the Grossmünster, which according to legend was founded by Charlemagne himself, as his horse fell to his knees on the spot where the martyrs Felix and Regula were buried.

Day 01	Swiss Border – Interlaken Take a train to Interlaken (approx. 2.5 hrs), where you check in at your hotel. For the rest of the day you are free to explore the beautiful scenery or to go shopping. Overnight stay at Interlaken.
Day 02	Interlaken – Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe After breakfast, you board the train to Kleine Scheidegg via Lauterbrunnen (approx. 1.5 hrs). The famous Jungfrau railway takes you to the highest station in Europe (approx. 1 hrs). A day of fun and excitement is awaiting you in the captivating snow peaks of Jungfraujoch– Top of Europe (3’454 m/11’333 ft). Film star Sunny Deol jumped from here into the depth in his award winning Film“The Hero”. Visit the Ice Cave with its ice formations or else explore the snow on the glacier. You find a range of international restaurants on the Jungfraujoch. Return to Interlaken (approx. 2.5 hrs) by train with an optional stopover in Grindelwald. Overnight stay at Interlaken.
Day 03	Interlaken – Luzern (Lucerne) After breakfast, you are free to do whatever you like. You might take a boat trip on Lake Thun or visit the Ballenberg open air museum, just above Brienz. Later proceed to the station for your train connection to Luzern (approx. 2.5 hrs). Overnight stay at Luzern.
Day 04	Luzern – Mount Pilatus After breakfast, enjoy a cruise on Lake Luzern, departing from Luzern and terminating in Alpnachstad (approx. 1.5 hrs) & ravel up the Pilatus (2’132 m/7’000 ft) by boarding the steepest cogwheel railway in the world (From mid May till end of Oct). In wintertime take the bus from Luzern to Kriens (approx. 10 mins.) and continue with the panoramic gondola from Kriens to the Pilatus). Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views over the lakes of Central Switzerland and no fewer than 73 peaks. On the top of Mount Pilatus there are many restaurants. In the afternoon, a cable car takes you back to the base. A coach takes you back to Luzern (approx. 10 mins.). We also offer this excursion in reverse order. Overnight stay at Luzern.
Day 05	Luzern – Zürich/Geneva After breakfast, check out of the hotel and travel by train to Zürich (approx. 1 hrs). For the rest of the day you are free to go shopping in the famous mall street Bahnhofstrasse, which is situated on the shores of Lake Zürich. Or explore the nightlife in Switzerland’s biggest city. Overnight stay at Zürich/Geneva.
Day 06	Zürich/Geneva – Depart for the onward journey After breakfast, you either depart to the airport for your onward flight or else continue your stay in Switzerland.

Zytglogge clock tower is a famous land mark in Berne, Switzerland. It was built around the 13 century displaying it's medieval style. Originally, it served as the gate tower then later it was converted to a women's prison. Later, a major fire burned through the tower and it was restored in 1983. The tower has two bells where the larger one rings every hour on the hour and the smaller bell rings every quarter hour. Guided tours are available to see the inside of the tower and go to the rooftop and experience the romantic views of the city

Interlakken Switzerland

The first time that I visited this place was in April of 1999. I had the Hostel in Berlin arrange for me to stay at Balmers Herbage, the oldest youth Hostel in Switzerland. At the time it was full of Americans and there was always a party going on. From here I took the two hour train ride down toZermatt to ski the Matterhorn. This is possibly the most scenic train ride that I have ever had. I was able to rent a pair of skis at the hill which alleviated my worries of dragging my equipment all over. I had accomplished my goal of skiing the Matterhorn with my first trip to Switzerland.
My second journey brought me back to Interlakken 8 years later to visit an old friend. This time I was visiting in the summer and it was just as spectacular. The Jungfrau Region is right there. The ski area here is Grindelwald, but this place is also know for summer trekking. Having skied this area previously as well, I was happy to return to all of the region's beauty. Although this time we stayed inHasliberg. East of Interlakken and up on the side of a mountain I was so pleased to have been given this opportunity. This was a very different experience for me as we spent time climbing around on the mountain tops. The nice thing about the area is that you can either trek or take some sort of transportation to the top. The Alpine region of Brienz, Meiringen and Hasliberg is some of the prettiest in the country. 2250 meters above sea level, theMeiringen-Haseliberg Lift Co. has transported skiers and hikers to the area since 1973. When you stand on the top of these mountains you really do feel compelled to begin singing. The place we stayed was a wonderful B&B located at the bottom of the tram. Owned by a local couple it is the only one in town and not hard to find. My favorite excursions in the area was when we visited theAareschlucht. Carved out by Glaciers the Aare Gorge is a 1400m long and 200m wide wonder of nature. We were able to walk along a man made path up this Gorge to see some of the most amazing land scape ever. Tickets can be purchased at either the East or West entrances and the 45 minute hike is worth it. Make sure that you bring your rain coat as the spray from the roaring water does keep you quite damp.
