Kirti Mandir, Porbandar is a national monument of Gujarat that was said to be the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Kirti Mandir is located in the Porbandar city, a seaside town of Gujarat. The city also has a mythological association. It is believed that Sudana, Lord Krishna’s classmate resided in the city. Porbandar was thus known as Sudanapuri. The Kirti Mandir, Porbandar has a memorial of Mahatma Gandhi and contains a library with books on Gandhism, a spinning hall, a children’s nursery and a lovely prayer hall. In the prayer hall of the Kirti Mandir of Gujarat prayers of all faith are regularly organized.
Kirti Mandir, Porbandar is constructed adjacent to the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji was born in Porbandar in 1869. Innumerable Indian tourists visit Kirti Mandir of Gujarat and the ashram of Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba, his wife to pay their homage to the great leader of Indian National Movement. The Kirti Mandir, Porbandar has a huge Gandhian library which has an innumerable collection of valuable books on Gandhian thought.

Darbargadh History

Rana Sartanji built Darbargadh, the fortified palace, with a huge carved stone entrance gate flanked by high turrets and massive wooden doors. It is a typical example of such royal enclosures situated within the town of Gujarat. The nearby edifices on the left of the entrance are also good examples of large mansions with courtyards and intricately carved wooden elements.
The massive fort wall has several bastions, 4 main gates and 3 ‘baris’ (small gates). The four main gates are Kathiawadi Darwaja in east, Porbandar Gate in west, and Halar Gate in north and Junagadh Gate in south. The smaller gates are- Darbari Bari, Bhimji Bari and Sati Bari. Darbargadh of Dhoraji is located at the highest point in the town and is approached by Darbari Bari; a beautiful gate adorned with a jharokha, resting on brackets of 4 elephants statues in different poses. A finely carved entrance gate leads to the Darbargadh in the middle of a courtyard. Darbargadh is a three storeyed structure on a high plinth. The fa?ade is ornamented with sculptures of musicians, complex geometric patterns, images of sitting lions in different postures on long eaves, profusely carved pillars, horizontal friezes, decorative ‘kanguras‘ and windows framing skyline. It is designed like a jewel box- in the same architectural style of Navlakha Palace at Gondal.

The city of Porbandar in Gujarat State in India has lot of historical importance as the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi was born here at Porbandar. Porbandar has also become a popular tourists spot due to the presence of the open and beautiful Arabian Sea. Porbandar was a big port in the ancient times and had lot of commercial importance. We had an opportunity to visit this beautiful city of Porbandar in last January during our visit to India as my father in law stays at Porbandar.

Sea Beach of Porbandar in Gujarat

There are many beautiful sea beaches in the State of Gujarat in India as it has very long sea shore of around 2000 miles all along its border. We were able to visit many such sea beaches during our recent visit to India during January 2009. One of these beaches is situated at the city of
Porbandar. As Porbandar is the native place of my father in law, we had an opportunity to visit this lovely sea beach of Porbandar.

Sartanji Choro in Porbandar

Rana sartanji built the three-storeyed summer pavilion, sartanji choro, in rajput style as a retreat in the midst of the garden, each side representing a different seasons. the pillars with image of musicians, profusely carved foliated arches and a single dome at the top gives an idea of bygone days, when Rana Sartanji used to compose poems in Braj Bhasha, sitting under this pavilion.

Porbandar Sea Beach

The town has developed at the south-east shore on the Arabian Sea . At the foot of the town is the once beautiful Porbandar Sea Beach that, however, stench today. In the past it was called the Willingdon Marina Beach. And there is the Huzur Palace , the palace of yore oa the beach. You can also visit the factory here where gold and silver cigarette cases and vanity bags are manufactured.
