When you are on vacation, it may mean that you can let your hair down but you also have to keep in mind that this is definitely not a time to let your guard down. Wherever you may be and whatever you may do, it is important that you keep yourself in the safe zone and this is especially critical when you are traveling. Below are a few traveling tips that can help you have peace of mind while enjoying your vacation time.

Make sure to book your hotel or resort way ahead of time. It is best to know all your travel itineraries, destination and lodging details in advance. If it is your first time to travel to that location or you are not familiar with the place, you may want to get detailed descriptions and instructions on how to get there. This is one way of ensuring that you will not get lost midway. Note that the important numbers that you can call in case you miss or lose your way, this is especially true if you are traveling by car. Directions are very, very important and see to it that you have the right map. Also ask about your resort’s security measures beforehand. Choose a hotel that has tight security controls and regulations. Ask about the door locks or about their security personnel. It will make you feel better to know that you are in safe hands during your vacation.

Since you are in a new place, you are more vulnerable to crooks that usually keep an eye on and target unsuspecting tourists. Be very wary of people who may pretend to be hotel personnel. It may very well be a felon in disguise. One thing to remember is to look at their uniforms and IDs. If you are unsure, check with the front desk. Thefts and pickpockets are quite common in hotels and tourist destinations. To fend off the former, you may want to hang around while housekeeping does their job in keeping your room clean. Otherwise, you make sure that your valuables are safely tucked and hidden out of sight; better yet you may want to take them with you. Pickpockets usually work with distractions best. Their moves may include bumping into you, asking for the time, spilling something on you or even tripping in front of you, so be wary.

When traveling, it is advisable that you go with a buddy. This way you have someone to look out for you and vice versa. Most hotels and resorts set up parties for their guests and more often than not, you will have a drink or two. If you should get drunk and wasted, at least you will have someone to carry you back to the hotel room or even watch your back. Drunks are susceptible to theft and date rape. You would not want to be a victim of one or the other. Make sure that your companion is someone you can trust and who can support you when you get wasted. It would defeat the reason if both of you are thrashed and done in.

Winding, cobbled alleys lead visitors through the small, scenic village of Zermatt. Old, sturdy, wooden chalets line streets and lend a cozy feel to the car-free medieval village filled with pedestrians breathing in the fresh, alpine air. As pretty as this traditional Swiss village is, the visitor’s eye is drawn upward to the majestic peak of the famed Matterhorn, which soars up to 4,478 meters (14,692 feet).

The Matterhorn is not the only peak in town, though. There are 29 mountains surrounding Zermatt that rise over 4,000 meters (13,200 feet). The Matterhorn Ski Paradise covers three ski areas: the Sunnegga-Rothorn, the Gornergrat, and the Klein Matterhorn. There are 250 kilometers (155 miles) of trails with 22 percent designated for beginners, 50 percent for intermediates, and 28 percent for advanced skiers. The intermediates have the advantage in Zermatt with miles of scenic runs but there is excellent off-trail skiing, as well as special heli-skiing trips for advanced skiers.

Zermatt welcomes snowboarders as well. Boarders are allowed on most of the resort’s slopes and there are two snow parks with two half-pipes. There are also good schools for snowboarders including the Swiss Ski & Snowboarding School and the Stoked Snowboard School.

The terrain for cross-country skiers is somewhat limited and is located near the bottom of the mountains and requires natural snowfall. However, skiers enjoy several loops and trails sheltered by trees. There are 30 kilometers (18 miles) of hiking trails. Snowshoers can follow these trails, as well. The trails provide magnificent views of the surrounding mountains including the Matterhorn and there are cozy huts along the way to warm up in. For hikers that prefer more of a challenge there are local guides available to lead the way. There are also other winter activities to enjoy in the area, including tobogganing, ice skating, and ice climbing.

Zermatt runs a highly efficient lift system that includes 74 transport facilities with high-speed cableways, mountain railways, and ski lifts moving 17,188 people per hour. This system also provides access to Cervinia, Italy, where visitors can ski down the slopes and enjoy a tasty Italian meal.

Great restaurants are easy to find in Zermatt. The village is home to over 100 restaurants. Many are located along the Bahnhofstrasse, Zermatt’s main street. Food served ranges from traditional regional dishes of Raclette and fondue to Chinese, Italian, and Japanese dishes, among others. The restaurant Le Mazot offers high-class dining while Tony’s Grotto is a great place to enjoy a pizza. There are 38 mountain restaurants, as well. Many diners move on to a bar or nightclub with entertainment ranging from jazz to disco.

Skiing is not the only way to spend a day in Zermatt. Fun excursions include the Glacier Grotto, the world’s highest ice museum with its blue, frozen sculptures. A cable car lifts visitors to the top of the Klein Matternhorn to explore the unique glacial caves. Air Zermatt offers helicopter rides with stunning views of the Matterhorn and other nearby peaks. The Alpine Museum in Zermatt is also fun for winter sports lovers and details the history of mountaineering and skiing in the area. Shoppers are happy in Zermatt, as well. More than 300 shops sell products ranging from Swiss army knives to cuckoo clocks. Some shops sell touristy souvenirs while others offer designer fashions, ski wear, and expensive jewelry. For those who aren’t shoppers, there’s a very popular casino in Zermatt.

Zermatt provides everything needed for the ultimate alpine vacation. From a thrilling ski run to a cozy dinner in an old chalet, a Zermatt winter vacation is what dreams are made of.

If you have decided upon the Alicante region of Spain for your vacation this year, you will want to know how to choose a hotel in this area. There is such a wide choice of hotels in the Costa Blanca region in general, and in the Alicante area in particular that you will certainly be spoiled for choice. Alicante Hotels can range from inexpensive and rudimentary to luxe and expensive. Decide what suits your taste, budget and plans and then go searching.

The best advice is to start your search early. Especially during the high season of summer, you need to book well in advance to get exactly what you want. An early search on the Internet will give you a wide choice in terms of location, price and amenities. You may also want to talk to a travel agent; many times agents get packages of airfare/hotel rates that can’t be beat.

If you know of a few hotels that you would consider, you may want to contact them directly. Many times they reserve special rates for repeat customers and these are not listed either on the Internet or with travel agents. If you use all three of these options and compare what you find on the Internet with what you find from a travel agent or directly, you will surely find the best rates.

What should you consider when you are shopping for a hotel in Alicante? Location is always an important consideration. There are many hotels in Alicante’s downtown and harbor area. If you are more interested in being by the sea, close to the beaches and having a beautiful view, the harbor area is for you. But if you plan on sightseeing and want to visit museums and eat at fine restaurants, you should consider the downtown area. If you stay in the downtown area, you will not need a car, since most of the attractions are within walking distance.

One of the main decisions you have to make in terms of your hotel choice is level of comfort. A large four or five star hotel will be the most expensive choice, but if you insist on having a gym, swimming pool and concierge services at your disposal and want to be able go to a restaurant or bar right in your hotel, you will make this choice
regardless of the price.

If your budget is a consideration, you probably will not choose such a hotel. But maybe you are only going for a short trip, and an extravagance such as this is worthwhile.
For longer stays, however, saving money on a hotel in order to have funds to see more of the sites (and to afford to do some great shopping!) makes a lot more sense.

Czech Republic as a travel destination

As a travel destination, the Czech Republic has much to offer. It’s home to beautiful natural scenery, rolling farmlands, villages lost in time, hills crowned with castles, some of the world’s finest beers, a mild climate and its vibrant capital, Prague.

The Czech Republic comprises two areas, Bohemia in the west and Moravia in the east. Gems in Bohemia include the valleys of the Vltava and Labe rivers, hills and rocky mountains which are perfect for hiking and rambling.

Bohemia boasts a number of delightful medieval towns. A sublime example is the historic center of Ceský Krumlov on the banks of the Vltava river. The town features a 13th-century castle with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque components.

Moravia is the agricultural heart of the country and is marked by picturesque farms, wooded highlands and vineyards. Brno is the largest city in South Moravia and the Czech Republic’s second largest city. It showcases the natural and artistic charms of South Moravia and offers a host of theaters cinemas, and clubs.

If you’re making your way to Prague from other parts of the country, the area surrounding the capital is well-worth seeing. Notable is the Vltava river valley which has reservoirs, and the many delightful chateaus.

Prague guide

Prague’s many monikers – the Golden City, the City of Hundred Spires and the Crown of the World, attest to its unique splendor. Located on the River Vltava in central Bohemia, Prague was once the seat of Kings of Bohemia and an important trading junction.

Nowadays it’s a vibrant city with a pulsating nightlife and much to see and do. Add to that an enchanting historic ambiance, a low cost of living and superb beer, and you have the recipe for a great vacation. Here are some highlights.

Carving its way through Prague is the Vltava river and many of the city’s attractions are around on near it. To experience these riverside charms, take a boat tour along the river. And be sure to take a stroll over the Charles Bridge at night and view the city with its illuminated castle.

If Prague has a heart it is surely Wenceslas Square, site of all the city’s historic events such as the Prague Spring of 1967 and the Velvet Revolution of 1989 that finally brought an end to communism. Wenceslas Square is now the site of the national museum.

For glorious views over the Vltava to the city beyond, head on up to the Castle District on the hill. While you’re there, visit the impressive cathedral.

The highlight of Prague is its medieval architecture. The city was relatively untouched during the World Wars and so is a showcase of a fascinating medley of architectural styles including Art Nouveau, Baroque, Cubist, Gothic, Neo-Classical, and Renaissance. Add to this the modern towers of commerce.

You can best enjoy Prague’s architecture in the Old Town Square. It’s a great area for walking with its winding streets, old taverns, and antique shops. The highlight of the square is the astronomical clock. A marvel of 15th century engineering, this clock presents statues of the apostles as each hour chimes.

Whether you’re tempted by beautiful natural scenery, historic towns or just the wonderful Pilsner beer, the Czech Republic and Prague make for a wonderful travel experience.

If you have the financial resources to do it, you must go on an African safari at least once in your lifetime. The word safari comes from the Swahili language. It means journey, and journey you will. Return to the continent of your human ancestry and see its magnificent wildlife. You can expect to observe elephants, lions, tigers, and hippos in their native habitat. A safari does not even compare to a visit to the zoo. Seeing these animals as they exist in the wild is an unbeatable experience. You will discover Africa and experience a holiday that you will never forget.

You have several choices when you go on a safari. You can take a walking safari or on a hosted safari in a game preserve. A game preserve safari provides you with guides, transportation, and typically food and tents for camping out. You might be in the wild for several days, and most of your basic needs will be taken care of. Experienced guides will take you directly to the wildlife, making sure that you get to see plenty of animals. You can also choose to travel alone in your own vehicle, but do so at your own peril. The animals are far from domesticated and you can get into trouble without a native guide, especially when you are trying to get close enough to take pictures. You do not want to be on the wrong end of a stampeding rhino. Invest in a long lens camera before your trip, so you do not have to get too close to nature to take great shots. Your photo album from your holiday will be unforgettable.

A safari company is invested in making your trip safe as well as exciting. On an extended safari, guests will typically stay in either a lodge or a tent village equipped with most of the comforts of home. A chef is provided for meals, as well as guides for protection from predatory animals who might be interested in the lights of your camp. Expect to be regaled with Africa folklore by your guides. You can sit around the campfire and exchange stories at night, and then go to bed under mosquito nets while listening to the hum of insects and the calls of wild animals. If you are uncomfortable sleeping in the open or you are not prepared to give up running water and air-conditioning, then sign up for a safari where you will be housed in a lodge and take shorter day excursions. You will not be able to venture as far as if you were camping, but you will not have to exchange the comforts of home.

When you go on safari in Africa, make sure to pack well. In addition to a great camera, you should invest in a pair of binoculars. You might decide to adopt a new hobby while on the continent – bird-watching. There are so many species to observe in their native habitat. It would be a shame to be restricted by regular vision. After you have your camera and your binoculars, you can start thinking about clothing. Light, loose clothes are essential for your travels. A hat with a wide rim will protect you from the sun. Polarized sunglasses will protect your eyes without compromising your view. Finally, discover and revel in your African safari.

Your vacation supplies must include a first-aid kit.

Have it available while traveling and take it with you whenever you go walking, hiking, or any activity that takes you away from civilization.

You can use just about any type of container for your first-aid kit. It’s best if the container is lightweight, like plastic, and has a good lid. A handle can be useful also. A small toolbox, lunchbox, fishing tackle box or even kitchen Tupperware would work.

Here is a list of things to consider including in your vacation first-aid kit. This is not a comprehensive list and you may have other items to add.

You should have some sterile gauze with adhesive tape and scissors to cut them. Make sure the scissors are sharp. Also multiple sizes of band-aids. Tip: Sanitary napkins are sterile and make good compresses to stop bleeding.

To clean cuts and wounds include antibiotic cream, hydrogen peroxide and antiseptic wipes.

Consider including aspirin and acetaminophen, instant cold packs, calamine lotion and hydrocortisone cream.

Also, antacid, insect repellent, motion sickness medication, anti-diarrhea medication, sunscreen, cold and flu tablets

If anyone is taking prescription medicine be sure to bring enough for the whole trip.

The first-aid kit is a good place to store a list of emergency numbers along with your medical insurance information.

It’s always a good idea to have a first-aid manual on hand and review it before you leave. This way you will be much more prepared should a situation arise where you need it. This is a great opportunity for children to learn a little about first-aid so review the manual with them too.

Other miscellaneous items that could be helpful are thermometer, latex gloves, tweezers and flashlight with spare batteries.

Keep your vacation first-aid kit easily accessible at all times but away from small children.

That may be a presumptuous statement to make but after reading this article thoroughly, there’s a good chance that you’d agree to make that statement as well.

But first, let’s get down to the basics.

Cebu, as mentioned, is in the Philippines. Now, when you mention the Philippines, it’s either Manila or Boracay — those are the first places to come to your mind. But we assure you that Cebu is as good as both those places. Better yet, there’s no need to pass through other cities in the Philippines just to get to Cebu. As one of the major ports of the country, Cebu is even directly accessible from other countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, China.

Since Cebu is highly urbanized, tourists have no need to worry about where to purchase toiletries and other necessities because there are department stores and 24-hour convenience stores strategically located all over the city.

But enough about that and let’s get directly to the good stuff.

The Olango Wildlife Sanctuary should always figure prominently in a tourist’s travel plan to Cebu, Philippines. In this sanctuary, tourists would able to catch a glimpse of different species of migrating birds coming from places as far as China and Siberia. Based on studies made of this natural phenomenon, these birds choose Olango as a wintering ground and a way to increase their fat reserves before they resume flight.

Cebu’s Fort San Pedro is the oldest tri-bastion fort in the Philippines. Built in 1565, its 8-foot thick walls and 30-foot tall tower bore witness to several wars, not the least would be World War II, in which it served as barracks for American soldiers.

Casa Gorordo Museum is also one of the well-loved destinations of tourists once they arrive in Cebu. Taking a tour of this well-kept museum is like stepping into another time and era, thanks to the lovely antique furniture on display and the conservation of residential features from the old days such as the magnificent courtyard.

And speaking of Gorordo, make sure that you visit 415 Gorordo Avenue in Lahug, Cebu City because that is the address of the Sala Piano Museum. In this museum, you’d be able to a see a collection of about hundreds of pianos of different shapes and sizes.

Lastly, there’s the Kawasan Falls in Matutinao, Badian. The sight of this majestic waterfall would no doubt make you think how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful world.

There has been a lot of buzz lately about living on a Cruise Ship full time as an alternative to living in a retirement home.

However, it does not seem very exciting after about 6 months or so.

Ships, even Cruise Ships, are noisy for at least 2 reasons:

1. Engine Noise.
No matter how new the ship, no matter what new turbine engines the ship may have, the 24 hour engine noise may get to people.

2. Parties, bars and restaurants.
There is always a kind of party atmosphere on a Cruise Ship, people eat and drink too much, nobody tells them when to go to bed, they don’t have to get up the next morning, so, parties make noise.

It gets boring staring at the ocean 2 out of 3 days.

Although ship’s activities are very many these days, after a while you’ll get bored with them.
Cabins in general are very small, so after a while you’re going to miss your large living room on the mainland with its 75″ TV.

However, if 6 months are too long, there are other alternatives; Cruise maybe a couple of months a year.

If you follow that action things become interesting.

Here are some options:

The Monthly $18,000 route:

Residensea, the world’s only floating Condo, a 47,000 ton cruise ship which sails the oceans,
reportedly offers staterooms for rent for as low as $18,000 per month.

This Cruise Ship has designer apartments with original art.

I mean, this is luxury personified.

Great if you can get it.

Around the world in 102 Days.

By small Luxury Cruise Ship

In 2005 a trip around the world lasting 110 days could be had for as low as $15,600 per person.
That is $150 per person per day including food and all facilities. That is $9000 per couple per month.

This same couple would spend a minimum of $4000 a month in an old folks home.

So going on this 3 1/2 month World Cruise would cost them $9000 – $4000 = $5000 per month.

Now let me tell you what this $5000 for 2 people gets them:

The Itinerary:

Southampton ,Tenerife – Canary Islands St Vincent – Cape Verde Islands Fortaleza – Brazil Rio de Janeiro – Brazil Montevideo – Uruguay Buenos Aires – Argentina Puerto Madryn – Argentina Port Stanley – Falkland Islands Cruise around Cape Horn Ushuaia – Argentina Transit Beagle Channel Punta Arenas – Chile Chacabuco – Chile Puerto Montt – Chile Santiago – Chile Cruise by Easter Island Cruise by Pitcairn Island Papeete – Tahiti Bora Bora – Society Islands Pago Pago – American Samoa Lautoka – Fiji Islands Noumea – New Caledonia Brisbane – Australia Sydney – Australia Eden – Australia Philip Island – Australia Melbourne – Australia Hobart -Australia Transit Milford Sound Dunedin – New Zealand Christchurch – New Zealand Transit Marlborough Sound Wellington – New Zealand Auckland – New Zealand Nuku ‘Alofa – Tonga Apia – Western Samoa Christmas Island Honolulu – Oahu, Hawaii Kahalui – Maui, Hawaii Los Angeles – USA Acapulco – Mexico Huatulco – Mexico Transit Panama Canal Curacao – Dutch Antilles Margherita Island – Venezuela Barbados Ponta Delgada

The Luxury:

This is on a very luxurious Cruise Ship that has only outside or balcony cabins.

By Freighter

In 2005 a trip around the world lasting 102 days by various freighting companies could be had for $11,750 per person.
That is $117 per person per day including food and all facilities. That is $7000 per couple per month.

This same couple would spend a minimum of $4000 a month in an old folks home.

So going on this 3 1/2 month World Cruise would cost them $7000 – $4000 = $3000 per month.

For this you get a double suite with double occupancy.
Port Times range from 1 to 2 days.
The advantage seems to be that there is lots of space in four double suites.

The double suites all consist of two rooms, a bedroom with twin beds and a living room.

The cabins have showers.
Each cabin also has its own VCR and TV monitor and refrigerator.

On board facilities are a private passenger lounge and the sharing of the officers’ table

There is also an indoor swimming pool.

Cruise Hopping

This is cheaper yet.
There are lots of 7 day cruises for about $100 per day per passenger.
So you could conceivably take 7 day cruises continuously in the same area, say, the Caribbean, on the same ship, or on different ships until you get sick and tired of the area.

You can then do the same thing from the West Coast.

Logistics would be more difficult because you may need a place to stay every 7th night.

Discount Cruising

Effective in 2005 there is now a discount European Cruise Line operating in the Caribbean that charges $46 per person per night but you have to get your own food.

Maximum time they allow you to cruise is 2 weeks.

Still, can’t get any cheaper than this.

So, if you want to live on a Cruise Ship, it can be done in a variety of different ways.
