The Bridge

Ponte Vecchio is Europe’s oldest wholly-stone segmental arch bridge. There are three arches, the main arch of 30 meters, and the side ones of 27. To unwind, I typically stop on my way home from work to hike from Cardiff to Carlsbad on the beach. For picturesque sunsets and “tasty waves”, the beach between Cardiff to Carlsbad can’t be beat.

Cardiff – Starting

I typically start this hike by parking just south of restaurant row in Cardiff. Restaurant row is located to the north of the lagoon between Cardiff and Solana Beach on Highway 101. Parking is located on the side of the road, which is right up against the beach. Give me convenience or give me death!

As you head north, you first pass Charlie’s and other restaurants. Past the restaurants, you will come to the beginning of the bluffs that will line the beach to the end of the hike. San Elijo campground is on top of the initial bluffs and extends for roughly a mile north. The campground is very popular and the temporary home of locals and tourist. You can tell the difference by contrasting tans with sunburns.

Following San Elijo, you will walk through Sea Cliff County Park with bluffs over 100 feet high. An area known affectionately as “Swami’s” quickly follows this park. The name derives from the fact the area above the bluff is the home to the Self Realization Fellowship Center. This area is know as hot surf spot, but is very crowded. If you are a bit winded, you can stop and watch 50 or so surfers maneuver for waves. Yes, traffic jams aren’t exclusively restricted to California freeways.

North of Swami’s, you will cruise along a long strip of sand hemmed in by 50 to 60 foot bluffs in the town of Encinitas. For those with a wicked sense of humor, there is a relatively popular game called, “Watch the house fall.” Yes, the bluffs are giving away slowly. As they erode, the homes first lose plants, then patios and so on. They say real estate is all about location, location, location, but sometimes a beach front home isn’t all that great.

The Encinitas section of the hike is fairly long. With the high bluffs, you will find sections of the beach that are deserted. Yes, even during summer. The only thing breaking up the solitude is Moonlight Beach, a fairly popular beach with locals. Otherwise, it’s just you, shells and joggers until you arrive at the end of the bluffs and South Carlsbad. Time to turn around and find the car.

The Cardiff to South Carlsbad hike is about 5 miles in each direction. The walk is flat and quick. By the end, you will be relaxed and forget that Bert in accounting is a jerk. Enjoy.

It is Friday afternoon and you are sitting in rush hour traffic on I-5 going north, I-8 going east or one of the other lovely commutes. You have time on your hands, so you start day dreaming. You start wondering if it was always this busy in San Diego? Perhaps it is even time to think of relocating? Easy my friend, a few hours in your hiking boots will renew your faith in our politically corrupt, expensive slice of paradise.

The first of the treks worth your time is the beach hike. It is relaxing, easy and will remind you why it is great to live in San Diego. You can start and stop just about anywhere. A personal favorite is to head north starting at the beach in front of restaurant row in Cardiff. Depending on how far you want to go, you can just cruise up past Swami’s through Encinitas and up into relaxing Leucadia. The really great thing is you can just pop up off the beach and take in lunch on a patio whenever you feel like it.

If you are looking more for a hiker’s hike, there are plenty to fit the bill. A trip up the San Diego River, particularly in spring, is candy for the eyes. No, I am not talking about the section of the river down in the city. Instead, we are looking at the area out by Ramona. This is a 10 mile hike that takes 10 hours or so. It begins at the Inaja Picnic Area or Ramona Oaks Road on the other end. The hike is 10 miles one way, so you either need to have two cars or turn around at some point. Regardless, you will see waterfalls, hike through canyons, groves of oaks, granite grottos and do some boulder hopping. You will have to exert yourself on this trail, so be warned.

To the east of Poway is one of the more popular hikes in San Diego – Mount Woodson Trail. There is a short version that goes up the mountain, but I am talking about the 4.5 mile version that goes beyond it. Regardless, the hike is picturesque, close to much of north country and a favorite of hikers that like to do a little rock climbing given the boulders on the mountain. The best place to start is at the southwest edge of parking and picnic area at Lake Poway. There is a trail head that will take you to a junction just beyond Warren Canyon. The trail starts here and is marked with a sign. If you can’t find it, just ask as it is very well known. It can get brutally hot in the summer, so make sure you have water.

San Diego is a great place to live even thought it is crowded and expensive. Take a few hours to explore the beauty and you will be ready to handle the rush hour on Monday morning.

Such was the joy of a vacation to a place called Los Roques Venezuela. It is almost like a Pacific atoll, except it is at the bottom end of the Caribbean Sea, some 80 miles north of Caracas, and easily reached by plane, where you land on Gran Roque, which is where we stayed in a Posada.

For the uninitiated a Posada is a converted house or cottage, which takes paying guests in varying degrees of luxury at a corresponding price.

My wife and I chose the Posada Natura Viva, a very Italian Mediterranean Posada, right next to the beach. We chose it because of recommendation that we pick an Italian owned Posada as opposed to a locally owned one.

I have however diverted from the purpose of this account which is of course a Man & Woman stranded on a Desert Island with the sun beating down on us. In truth it was arranged by the aforementioned Posada Natura Viva, and so far as the sun beating down, they also supplied us with beach umbrellas, table and chairs, gazebos and beach towels.

Just close your eyes, and imagine a tiny spit of an island no more than 50 paces wide, one hundred paces long, in fact smaller than my garden at home. Imagine warm clear turquoise water, where you could sit in it like it was a bath, and drink a cool beer, feeling it was your own private island

I suspect they are some of the most important things to take if you are to be stranded on a desert island, even if was only for a day!! I should add the Posada also supplied a packed lunch, thermos with cool drinks, even if we did have to bring our own beers!!

Anyway this I suspect is what the Caribbean was like before us tourists arrived in our thousands.

It was fortunate we remembered our sunblock and high factor sun creams because apart from the shade that was supplied for us, there is none at all.

This has to be one of the most beautiful places on this earth, in fact it’s almost like a dream, why not go and see it for yourself, and become the Man & Woman stranded on a Desert Island for a day!!
