Tips for a day in Paris part 1

Tips for a day in Paris

The Latin quarter is a great place to start a day in Paris. Seeing for example the Pantheon gives you an opportunity to witness some of the finest architecture in Paris. Great Frenchmen like Voltaire, Rousseau and Victor Hugo are buried here and you have the chance to see there graves. The interior of the Pantheon is filed with statues and paintings, and the catacombs with graves of famous Frenchmen. Since it is one of the less famous places, the ques to enter are oftentimes a lot smaller then at Notre-dame and the Eiffel tower.

The Tuileries garden (or Jardin des tulieries) is a great place to relax after a day at the louvre. It lies between the Louvre and place de la concorde. You can relax on a bench, in the grass or in a outdoor cafe in the park or go to the tivoli which of course has a Ferris wheel.

If you want an easy and cheap view of Paris the top of the Lafayette shopping centre can be recommended. Right next to the opera of Paris. Can also be combined with shopping.

Monte Carlo, the city of yachts and cars

Monte Carlo, the city of yacht and cars

Monte Carlo, is the administrative area of Monaco, the second smallest and the most densely populated country in the world. With a wonderful location by the Mediterranean sea, just an hour or so away form Nice on one side, and Italy on the other side, Monte Carlo is known as a playground for the rich and famous. The country is also associated with its big casinos and formula one races. However even for the less rich and famous among us, Monte Carlo has something to offer; most notably the chance to see more yachts and super-cars then you could ever dream about.

Some of the yachts here have there own helicopter on them, not to speak of water-jets or smaller boat on the back, which seems to be standard equipment for a yacht this days. Yachts like these can be seen all over the Riviera and the Mediterranean in general, but what is special about Mote Carlo is the shear quantity of super-yachts you can see in one place.

There is also an opportunity to see tons of super-cars in Monaco. Here from a car display at the port of Monte Carlo are Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Austin Martins and many more, from all the different super-car-epochs and ages.

But if you rater would like to relax a bit when you visit Monaco there is also (somewhat surprisingly) a Japanese-inspired garden not far away form one of the most famous Casinos in town: the "Monte Carlo casino". The garden has everything a garden of this kind should have: a pavilion, a carp pond, bridges and well timed treas and bushes.

I did not feel that Monaco was a place to spend a lot of days, but for a day trip it is an ideal location if you are staying in Nice or one of the other cites nearby.

Musée Cinéma et Miniature in Lyon (film museum)

Musée Miniature et Cinéma

The Miniature and film museum in Lyon is filed with props and sets from famous films and series. This picture for example shows a huge moving alien in a cage.

One of the scenes from the movie "perfume". Big parts of the ground floor shows scenes like this from the movie, some extremely elaborate and well made.

"Mystique" from the X-men films, standing next to "the thing" form the fantastic four movies (the 2005 film). There are a lot of costumes from the big stars or extras on display in the museum.

The claws Hugh Jackman used in one of the X-men films as "Wolverine".

One of the wands from the "Harry Potter" films.

There is also many weapons and other props form different films on display.

Here is a model of the airship in the tree musketeers film from 2011 with Orlando Bloom.

The Museum has an enormous collection of movie props, costumes, sets and other stuff over several floors. Well wrought a visit for every person interested in films who visits Lyon. The building is very easy to find, as it lies in the main street of Lyons old town. There is also, as the name suggests, a collection for miniature art in the top floor. The miniature art is very impressive and shows some amazing handwork.

Sacré-Cœur in Paris

Sacré-Cœur in Paris

The popular basilique; Sacré-Cœur, at the summit of Montmartre. The inside of the church can be also be visited but usually there are long ques to enter. However, a stroll in the streets of Montmartre to the right of the church and a warm onion soup or a glass of wine is a good alternative to standing in line. You can also, if you are so inclined, have your picture drawn by one of the numerous artists rooming the streets asking for nothing more than a few euros. Watch out however as not all of them are very good artists.

The view from Sacré-Cœur is maybe one of the best you can get over Paris. From here you can see almost the entire city and all its most famous sights. The stairs are also known from the film Amelie, and most of the film also takes place in the area of Montmartre.

If you want to have a stroll, walking to the summit is a nice way to see Paris and get some light exercise as well. If not, you can take a cable car up to the top as well.

Visiting Château d'If

2016-08-31T18:34:00.000+02:00

Château d'If

The famous Château d'If which lies just west of Marseille. Built in 1529, this fortress turned prison, turned tourist attraction is known for its legends. The most famous of the legends is the story of the count of Monte Cristo. Alexandre Dumas's novel is about the young man, Edmond Dantès, who is falsely accused of treason and spend 14 years imprisoned in a cell on d'if. When he escapes he becomes the great Count of Monte Cristo and inflicts his revenge on the people who betrayed him all those years earlier.

The front gate of the castle is the only entrance and it is surveilled by two large artillery towers. The gate also has a drawbridge which lies over what is now a dry ditch. This combined with the strong walls and its strategic position made it a great fortress and an almost inescapable prison.

Even though the story of Edmond Dantès isn’t real the horrible prison conditions described in the novel are. As was common in that time (The fort was used as a prison between 1580 and 1871) the richer and more high ranking prisoners could pay for private rooms and better living conditions, but the poorer prisoners lived in cramped cells under the castle with poor hygiene and with only small chances of survival.

The view from one of the better cells in the castle. Showing what is now an information office to the right, and barely visible to the left: a cafe serving food and drinks open from April to October.

The cliffs Dantès was thrown from when he escaped (or it could have been).

Château d'If is a place absolutely worth a visit if you are in Marseille. The boat trip out gives you a great view over the city, and even if you are not interested in Dumas's novel you can find the history and arquitecture of this fortress fascinating. The trip only takes about 25 minutes and the boat is easily accessible from the old port in Marseille.

South Africa.

Afrika, Marokko, Marrakech.

Beforehand, I had studied Tripadvisor and foundwhat I thought was the perfect place to stay: Riad Zolah. Missed not there no, they were at the airport and fetched us and drove us to the wall where the next of employees were waiting, we went further into the souk with its bustling and narrowstreets. Deep here lies the oasis named Riad Zolah. It was amazing, look at the pictures then you begin to see what I mean. Marrakech is a real exotic and excitingcity, lots to see and experience. We have ordered a new week at Riad Zolah in April2011, so well we thrive.

Vintur til Beaune i Burgund Frankrike

2009-10-10T20:36:00.004+02:00

Turistinformasjonen formidler guidet tur i vinmarkene, veldig bra.
