Why Tire Safety Is So Important

With winter in full strength...it's time to talk tire safety. So many of us just jump in our cars and drive off to work, the mall or wherever without even thinking about tire safety. Typically, we only think about it when something goes wrong. By that time, it's too late. Nobody wants to be stuck on the side of the road. So here are a few things to consider in order to keep your tires safe.

1. Don't mix tires. It's generally a good idea to have all 4 tires match or at least match in pairs. However, some 4 wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicles require 4 matching tires. If you run into a problem and have only 1 tire fails, make sure the replacement is the same size and tread pattern as the rest, and preferably the same brand.

2. Tire rotation is imperative. No vehicles have even weight distribution. And since the front tires are used for steering and in many vehicles propulsion, this makes them more susceptible to additional wear. Tires should be rotated at 5,000 mile intervals. 3. Check your air pressure regularly. Believe it or not, tires can lose air through the valve over time. Low tire pressure is a huge safety concern. When the tire is below the vehicle recommended tire pressure, your car can handle differently. Not to mention a tire with very low air pressure can blow out due to abnormal stresses inflicted on the tire. Every car or truck requires different PSI so check the drivers side door jam for the recommended PSI per your vehicle.

4. Inspect your tires tread depth. In most states 2/32" is considered the minimum safe tread depth. Most people don't own a tire tread depth tool, so the easy way to check this is insert a penny in the tread grooves, Lincoln head down. If you can see any portion of the top of Lincolns head, your're below minimum tread depth and it's time to replace your tire.

5. Nothing is better than a quick visual inspection. Inspecting your tires can help you find punctures or other visible signs of damage that could necessitate replacement. Every time you fill up at the gas station it's a good idea to walk around the car and first see if each tire looks properly inflated. Always check for damage to the sidewall or tread. And it's not a bad idea to turn the wheels to the side to check for any irregular wear patters in your front tires that could indicate a faulty wheel alignment.

5 Tips for Winter-Proofing Your Car

With winter off to a slow start here in New England this year, lets not forget that January, February and March are still ahead of us! Old Man Winter will make his appearance sooner than later. That's why it's a good time to start preparing now for those hazardous winter road conditions.

We recently cam across these tips that are simple, very inexpensive and so unusual we just had to pass them along:

1.) Ice-proof your windows with vinegar: Just fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water and spray it on all your car windows at night. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which raises the melting point of water, which prevents water from freezing. Spray it in the evening and your windows will be clear of ice in the morning.

2.) Keep your headlights clear with car wax: Slush, snow and road salt are horrible for your headlights. When it sticks, it can be very dangerous to drive. The good news is you can fix this by wiping regular car wax on your headlights and buffing if off as you would your paint. Car wax contains special water repellents that will prevent the snowy mess from building up.

3.) Squeak-proof your wipers with rubbing alcohol: Pour the rubbing alcohol on a cloth and wife down the wiper blades. The rubbing alcohol will clean the buildup of grease and grime on your wiper blades, which is the main culprit of malfunctioning wiper blades.

4:) De-Ice your lock in seconds with hand sanitizer: Most cars now have wireless key locks. But for those of us who still have to insert a key into a lock to get into our car...this can pose a problem when your car is covered with ice. Simple fix...just put some hand sanitizer gel on the key and lock. Just make sure your hand sanitizer has at least 60% alcohol because its the alcohol that keeps it from freezing.

5:) Get unstuck from the snow with your floor mat: Don't panic if you get stuck in the snow. Turn your car off and put it in park. Stick the rubber side of one of your floor mats under the spinning tire. Turn the car back on and give it some gas and the mat will provide you the grip you need to get going again!

In this article we'll talk about two tires that are changing the way we think about traditional tires. The first one on our list is like something out of a science fiction film and the second while innovative is similar to the Tweel. Then again having multiple brands offering airless tires creates competition in the market place, which is not only good for consumers price wise, but it also forces manufacturers to make their products better and better.

First up on our list is the BH03 a concept tire designed by Goodyear. This tire offers the potential to help power electric cars by transforming heat energy into electrical energy. While the specifics of the technology are being kept under wraps Goodyear has released a video that showcases some of the tires features. These include black patches on the surface of the tires which absorb heat from the Sun. This is great for when your car is parked for extended periods of time such as while you're grocery shopping or at work. Additionally, the tire will also generate power from friction so as you drive down the street your tires will be helping to charge your electric car. Furthermore, as the tires flex heat will be generated and transformed into energy.

Another interesting tire that is in development is the Hankook iFlex Non-pneumatic tire. The main benefit of this tire is that it cannot get a flat, because there is no air inside of it. The manufacturer claims this tire can do everything a standard tire can do and also has stated that the tire successfully completed performance tests on ride, handling, and high-speed driving capabilities.

As you might imagine you can't always get a new tire on the first try and the iFlex is the 5th prototype developed by the company. In addition to a better design Hankook was able to cut the manufacturing process down to 4 steps as compared to 8 in the prior generation. They also made a change in materials so that the tire is more environmentally friendly and the process of recycling the tire is easier. Sadly, there is no set date as to when this amazing new tire might be available to consumers, but be sure to keep an eye out.

Adjusting Your Tire Pressure For Summer

When getting ready for a long road trip checking your tire pressure is an essential step. Carrying heavy loads like dirt bikes, ATVs, Boats, or Jet Skis can put a lot of strain on your tires and raises the possibility of a flat if the tire is not properly inflated.

The first step is to check your vehicles tire pressure followed by your trailers tires if you’re using one and last, but certainly not least your spare tire/donut. It’s especially important to check your spare tire, because if one of your main tires fails putting on another flat tire certainly won’t do you any good.

As for the correct tire pressure, it’s better to worry less about the maximum tire pressure and focus on the manufacturer recommended inflation pressure. This can usually be easily located in one or more places. Many times you’ll find this information within the owner’s manual, but if you don’t see it there or lost your manual you can check the tire placard, which is typically located on the inside of your driver door. Please note that the maximum tire pressure located on the tire side wall is not the same as the recommended tire pressure and should generally not be used for day to day driving.

If your load is extra heavy due to a camper, etc, then feel free to use the maximum tire pressure, but just don’t exceed that limit or your tire could blowout. Just keep in mind that tire pressure will go up a pound or so for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. So you might want to stay a few pounds below maximum pressure in case of extra hot days at the beach or parks. If you do inflate to the maximum limit be advised that your tires could potentially blow out leaving you stranded at the beach unless of course you’ve invested in a service like AAA to come and save the day, but still it’s a headache you’d probably rather not have to deal with.

Other things to be aware of are that most tire pressure warning lights will only alert you when a tire is under-inflated, not when it’s over-inflated so if the weather has caused your tires to inflate to dangerous levels you may not necessarily have any idea. If that’s not bad enough over-inflated tires will wear out faster and may result in poor breaking and steering.

5 Tire Maintenance Tips

In this article we'll discuss five simple steps that can lead to longer tire life and better safety when you're on the road. Whether you're just driving around town or going across country these tips could help save your life or someone elses.

Step 1 - Inspect your tires. While you may not always notice damage to your tires right away they can get damaged slowly over time. For example, rocks, glass, and other debris in the road may cut or wear down your tires at an accelerated rate. Sometimes these cuts may not be deep enough to puncture the tire right away, but additional wear and tear could result in a flat. In the event you do get a flat hopefully you have what’s called a donut aka. a temporary spare tire and can get to a Town Fair Tire location nearest you for our flat repair service.

Step 2 - Check your air pressure regularly. While modern cars have an automated sensor for checking tire pressure most older cars do not. You may have heard of this sensor by another shorter name called TPMS. This abbreviation stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. If you are wondering where to find the proper tire pressure you can typically check one of a few places. The most common places to find the (OE) or original equipment inflation pressure is on the driver’s side door jam, gas cap, or glove compartment.

Step 3 - Read your tire’s recommended load capacity. Make sure not to exceed the load capacity advised by the tire’s load index. If you exceed this weight limit your tires can overheat and burst. This is especially important to pay attention to during the summer months as you might be doing home improvement projects and loading your vehicle with lumber, concrete, etc. can quickly add to the weight of your vehicle.

Step 4 - Follow the speed limit signs. While driving fast might seem fun from time to time* it’s not only more likely that you could create a serious accident, but you can actually damage your tires or create heat build-up in your tires. At high speeds your tires can be damaged more easily and you can also lose air pressure very quickly. Ultimately, this could lead to a tire blow out and of course at high speeds could result in injury to you or someone else.

Step 5 - Don’t be afraid to use your spare tire. If you have a popped tire or otherwise damaged tire it’s best to replace it immediately. Toss on your temporary spare tire (also known as a donut) and get to a tire repair shop near you and have a new tire placed on the vehicle.

Why It's Time To Remove Your Winter Tires

Did you know that winter tires are made of softer rubber that is not designed to hold up to hot temperatures? The reason for this is because winter tires are designed to provide maximum grip rather than deal with hot pavement. Additionally, winter tires are made to handle colder temperatures and winter precipitation.

If you’re wondering when the best time to remove your winter tires, it’s when the outside temperatures are consistently above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the main reasons to switch your winter tires to summer tires is because winter tires will wear down faster on warm, dry pavement. This is due to the tread rubber being significantly softer. Although softer rubber is better for winter road conditions it is certainly not the best for summer road conditions.

Additionally, if you keep winter tires on year round you will notice a decrease in performance especially if trying to make a quick turn. The reason for this is because winter tires are softer and don’t grip the pavement as easily. In the long run using winter tires during summer months will increase your costs due to shortened tire life span.

If you follow our recommendation to change to either all season or ideally summer tires we would also recommend you do a few other things. This includes getting your tires balanced as well as a wheel alignment. The benefit of balancing your tires is that there will be less strain on your suspension and you’ll also get better gas mileage. This is especially true for high performance vehicles. Imagine this. You're about to start a new running routine in an attempt to get in shape for summer. You go out to the store and buy a brand new pair of running shoes that fit your feet perfectly. You're ready to go. Fast forward six months. The temperature begins to drop as the fall season approaches, but you don't have enough money to afford new dress shoes for work AND snow boots for the fast approaching ski season. Winter is a beautiful season but it has a knack for slowing everything down, especially on the roads. Covered in snow and ice, the wintry roads do a number on your car, but perhaps the worst thing about winter is getting stuck behind snow plows, buses, and overly cautious drivers as they add untold amounts of time to your travels. While it isn't responsible to speed, swerve, or rage your way through traffic, it is important to examine the real reason why you're running late. You underestimated Mother Nature.

Let me spell it out for you. The scenario may vary from person-to-person but in the end the lesson will always be the same.

The alarm sounds. It's Monday morning already, and while you want nothing more than to stay safely tucked beneath your warm blanket, you know that you have very little time to spare. That presentation that you've been dreading at work is finally here, and anything short of an alien abduction couldn't get you out of going into the office today.

5 Winter Car Care Tips For A More Efficient Winter Driving Experience

I hate to say it, but with a little preparation on your part this whole ordeal could have been prevented. Assuming that your vehicle isn't suffering from any serious mechanical issues, here are a few measures that you should consider taking the next time that snow is in the forecast.

If the handle on your car door is frozen solid try heating up your key with a match or lighter and slowly pushing it into the lock. The heat and pressure should melt the ice.
If your windshield is covered in ice/frost your best bet is to turn on your vehicle and set your defrosters on high. After the vehicle has had a few minutes to warm up, you can expedite the melting process by scraping the ice off the windshield. (If you want to take more preventative measures against ice forming on your windshield you can cover it with a rubber bath mat to shield it from the elements.)
If your wiper blades are frozen use a cloth and rubbing alcohol to wipe down each blade. This will both melt the ice and prevent the blades from sticking to the windshield or freezing again.
If your side mirrors are icy the best thing to do is scrape them off. (A more preventative measure would be to cover each side mirror with a plastic bag secured with a rubber band. Regardless of how cold it gets at night, there won't be any snow or ice on your mirrors when you remove the bags in the morning.)
If your car is having trouble starting due to frigid temperatures, remember not to hold the starter for more than 10 seconds as that could kill your battery. Give the battery a minute to recover and then attempt to start the car again. If the battery is warmed up from the previous attempts it will have an easier time starting.

It's always smart to prepare your vehicle for winter by checking your battery, brakes, defroster, etc., but not everyone has the time or money to do everything on the list. Every year when the leaves start to change color, the same question runs through my mind. Do I need to buy new winter tires? The status of my bank account has the biggest impact on my decision, and I usually tend to stick with my Michelin Primacy MXV4 all season tires that I drive on year round. Destined For The Landfill: How Tire Companies Are Producing Tires That Are Healthier For The Environment

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. You've probably heard the phrase uttered over and over again since you were a kid. It's a simple concept that requires us to find a productive use for our waste, while simultaneously keeping our environment clean. For tire manufacturers this has always been a difficult task.

In 2007 the Department of Transportation estimated that there were roughly 254.4 million passenger vehicles registered in the United States, and the number is rising. This number does not include commercial vehicles, vehicles used for farming, etc.

When you consider the fact that each vehicle operates on 4 tires (motorcycles and tricycles using two and three tires respectively), and most drivers travel with a spare tire, you're looking at over one billion different tires touching down on U.S. pavement each year. With the average life of each tire ending at around 40,000 miles, most drivers will have to replace their tires every two years or so.

These are loose averages, but the trend is obvious. We have a lot of tire waste that needs to be dealt with. A large percentage of old tires are burned for their fuel value, for their use on basketball courts, shoe products, etc. As for the rest of the old tires, mot will find their way to a landfill. Tires are very durable and they usually contain a number of components that, when broken down, could pose an issue for the environment. Tires also take up a lot of space in landfills because they have roughly 75% void space.

How Can Tire Manufacturers Help?

Some tire manufacturers are attempting to tackle this problem at the point of creation. For example, Goodyear has started to use rice husk waste in the construction of their tires. The Akron based tire maker uses the ash left over from the burning of rice husks to produce electricity as an environmentally friendly source of silica for use in their tires. Tested for over two years at the company's Innovation Center in Akron, it has been proven that this new environmentally friendly method is equally as effective as traditional sources.

With 700 million tons of rice being harvested globally every year, disposing of all the waste has proven to be yet another environmental challenge. Goodyear has found a way to use one form of waste to partially prevent the creation of another. The company is now looking to suppliers to produce rice husk ash silica for mass purchase.

Goodyear is not alone in the fight to protect our environment. Michelin uses Green-X Technology in their Michelin Energy Saver tires, which promises a level of energy efficiency that is among the highest in the tire market. The technology helps to reduce CO2 emissions while maintaining all of the dependable advantages of driving on Michelin tires.

The Yokohama Tire Company produces their Avid Ascend tires using Orange Oil Technology which uses oil extracted from orange peels to improve the molecular bond between natural and synthetic rubber. This helps to enhance the tread life, fuel efficiency, and all-season traction of the tire, in addition to making the tire healthier for the environment.

With major brand name tire companies taking the lead on greener innovations, will more manufacturers follow suit? If we make the educated choice to purchase these environmentally friendly tires they'll have little choice.

Vehicle Recall Information Will Be More Accessible To The Public

Why does it seem like so many vehicles are being recalled lately? Just yesterday Toyota issued a recall for over 20,000 vehicles because they could be experiencing a potential fuel leak. Back in April, Mazda issued a recall for over 40,000 vehicles because there was a problem with spider infestation. Yes, you read that right.

According to a Mazda spokesman, the hydrocarbons in gasoline attract yellow sac spiders that can sometimes find their way into the fuel tank hose. Once inside the hose the spider may weave a web blocking the flow of air through the tube. As a result the fuel tank could crack, and a cracked fuel tank is very real fire hazard. This of course is not ideal.

Toyota and Mazda are certainly not the only vehicle manufacturers at fault. General Motors announced a 41,000 vehicle recall because the fuel pumps inside the vehicles were cracking due to the sweltering summer heat, and Ford Motor Co. recalled 74,000 vehicles because the electric hybrid system inside the vehicles were prone to overheating.

Now the fact of the matter is that nobody is perfect. While a recall may hurt a manufacturer's reputation for a period of time, it does not define the company. However, if a manufacturer made a habit of recalling their vehicles it would be another story.

This past Thursday House Democrats passed the Vehicle Safety Improvement Act, which expands public access to vehicle defect and safety information. It also allows the NHTSA to dish out harsher penalties to automakers who violate safety laws.

How Local Motors 3-D Printed "Strati" Car Will Help To Pave The Way For Future Designs

Can you imagine how cool it would be to design your own car and print the entire model out from the comfort of your home? Well you can put your imagination away because Local Motors, a micro-manufacturing company out of Phoenix, Arizona, has done just that. Although the 2014 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago was more of a center stage event rather than a discrete at-home operation, the team at Local Motors accomplished the incredible feat of printing their "Strati" car design in just 44 hours, and it is very cool.

The average motor vehicle consists of hundreds of separate parts, but the 3-D printed Strati uses only 40 parts. Though very proud of their accomplishment (as they should be), the Local Motors team acknowledged that there is plenty more work to be done in terms of structure and materials used, as well as how to go about fastening additional parts to the printed structure. We've barely broken the surface when it comes to how we can customize and personalize 3-D printed products.

How Might 3-D Printing Affect The Tire Industry?

We have seen some truly incredible products come out of 3-D printing so far. From dinosaur bones to bionic ears, and now a full size car. Will something as common place as tires become a 3-D printing norm? If so, we should not expect to print out Michelin or Bridgestone quality tires from a 3-D printer. The printed tire will roll, but there is no way to mimic the design of a top quality tire right now.

Thousands of tires are manufactured every day around the world. With 3-D printing technology we can eliminate the need for the standard engineering and tooling required for traditional manufacturing, thus being able to produce at a faster rate. I do not know what sort of impact this will have on the job market, but in terms of efficiency it seems like a home run.

When I first heard the term "3-D printing", I imagined a machine that could print out a physical version of a product that you can search for on the web. Upon learning more about the 3-D printing process, it's funny to see just how close my assumption actually was.

While it is not as simple as selecting an image and pressing "Print in 3-D", the 3-D printing process enables the creation of physical objects from a 3-D file. The printer then builds the object, layer by layer.

American Muscle Monday: The 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner

Beep! Beep! That familiar sound comes from one of your favorite childhood television characters as well as this weeks American Muscle Monday focus. The 1968 Plymouth Road Runner was designed to run the quarter mile in under 14 seconds and run the consumer less than $3,000. Mind you that $3,000 in 1968 is equivalent to over $20,000 today, the quality and overall appeal of the Road Runner justifies the price.

This commercial is one of the originals that were used to sell the Plymouth Road Runner in 1968. Plymouth forked over $50,000 to Warner Bros to earn the rights to the road runner name, and spent an additional $10,000 to create their signature horn, which mimicked the "Beep! Beep!" noise of the famous cartoon character himself.

The 1968 Plymouth Road Runner model featured:

A spartan interior with a basic cloth & vinyl bench seat (there were no carpets in the early models)
Power steering
Front disc brakes
AM radio
Air conditioning
Automatic transmission
A floor mounted shifter (four speed only)

The earliest models were only available as two door coupes, and the 383 CID (6.3 L) road runner V8 engine came standard on all Plymouth Road Runner models.

Town Fair Tire Spotlight: The Super Secret Project

More conveniently refereed to as The SSP, Super Secret Project is a New Hampshire based comedy group that infuses catchy beats with their own unique sense of humor to create internet gold. Group members Christian Wisecarver, Billy Donohoe, and Darby Dechristopher have been bringing out the laughs in people for years, and today I had the pleasure of talking with Christian to learn a little more about the group's origin, inspirations, and internet success.

"We started out by singing in bars, and when we realized that we had something special we decided to take our comedy to Youtube", Christian explained.

Usually when one of us has an idea for a song we'll shoot the others an e-mail, and if we can keep the ideas flowing back and forth without losing interest in the idea, we know that we should go through with the project."

I personally came to hear about SSP when my co-worker showed me their "One For You, New England" video. This particular video encapsulates dozens of jingles from New England area based companies, and I was thrilled when I heard the shout out to Town Fair Tire at the 1:25 mark.

Christian expressed some surprise when he found out that I was calling about the "One For You, New England" video, because it was posted to Youtube over a year ago.

"It's awesome how some videos will draw attention, fade away, and then come back just as strong the second time around."

It makes sense that the New Hampshire based group's number one hit is about... New Hampshire. These guys clearly had fun making "Granite State of Mind", a parody to rapper Jay-Z's well known track, "Empire State of Mind". This song had incredible Youtube success, and upon hearing it for myself its easy to tell why.

I'm not from New Hampshire myself, but I still found this video hilarious. I can only imagine the hysterical effect that it had on the residents of the state. "Granite State of Mind" has drawn nearly 2.4 million Youtube views to date since it was posted back in 2010. Super Secret Project has also been recognized by major media outlets such as the Boston Globe and The Tonight Show.

What a mess. The Tony Stewart/ Kevin Ward racing incident at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in New York has gotten plenty of media attention over the last few days. Last Saturday, August 9th, Stewart and Ward were involved in an on-track altercation that escalated far beyond what it should have. Below is a 53 second raw video clip taken by Youtube user Pete Laslow at the track that night.

As you can clearly hear from the concerned racing fans in the video, Tony Stewart struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. with his car. While only Stewart knows what really happened out there on the track, the rest of us are left to debate whether or not Stewart's actions were intentional or not. One might argue that Tony didn't see Kevin walking towards his car. You can also believe the total opposite, and think that there's absolutely no way that he couldn't have seen him.

While racing fans are left to converse amongst one another, the real story lies with the passing of a young driver. The headlines will focus on Stewart and his penalty (or not) over the course of the next few weeks, but what's important here is to respect the privacy of the friends and family of Kevin Ward Jr.

Changes In NASCAR

It didn't take long for NASCAR to come out and make some changes to their rule book. Effective immediately, NASCAR drivers will no longer be allowed to get out of their car on the track to confront another driver. While such behavior seems to be common sense to fans and viewers, we truly do not know or understand what really goes on out there on the track.

In January of 2013, this vibrant purple 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda was sold for $1.3 million at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale.

This year at the Mecums Auctions event in Seattle, the blue beauty below is expected to go for around $2 million. Cuda's have sold for upwards of $3.5 million in the past, and something as rare as this blue 4-speed has a chance to push that number even further. With only 11 of these models ever made, the 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda 4-speed Convertible can become the center piece for an American Muscle enthusiast's collection.
