Notice to the Landlords - Your responsibility

Notice to Landlords
We would like to remind everyone that as per Town of Faro Water and Sewer Bylaw 92-30, Section 906, the registered owner of the property shall be liable for all charges and fees with respect to that property.
If your tenant sets up W/S/R account and fails to make the payments, it is your responsibility to pay the charges. We are invoicing quarterly and the invoices are not due until the end of the quarter. Outstanding charges are subject to 10% penalty after 60 days from the due date and at that time we send a late payment notice which will be copied to you. By the time you hear from us, there may be 5 months of charges on the account. We therefore encourage the landlords to make sure their tenant is making the payments or to keep the account in their name and collect the fees from the tenant directly.

Welcome, Nanako!

Welcome!
We would like to welcome Nanako from Oosakasayama City, Japan to our beautiful community. She is here under an Exchange Student Program; and is staying with Lorraine and Josh Wilcox as her host family while attending DVG School.
Nanako is a true young adventurer as she has decided to leave a city like Oosakasayama City (Population 58,172 - 4,900 persons per km²) to spend few months here in Faro. We hope that her stay here is a pleasant and memorable one.
On her first day in town, Nanako learned to chop wood like a true Yukoner. She loves art and well….sleeping. She is already feeling a bit cold…so will need to adjust to the Yukon for sure. She is looking forward to seeing some wildlife and learning to play hockey.
We are confident that this wonderful, warm and loving community will make Nanako feel right at home, so that she will not only forget about the cold, she will actually enjoy her time here. Have a wonderful stay here Nanako!

Thank you for job well done!

Thank you!
While driving through town during past few months, you must have felt like you were in a tropical paradise; with well-maintained lush green spaces and beautiful flower beds all around town. All this was made possible by the hard work of our full time and seasonal adult and student team members in the public works. We would like to thank them all for a job well done!

Time to get Planting!

When I started typing this update in the morning, it read “The weather has certainly taken a turn for the better.” Then the thunder came, and I thought I was going to have to change the tone of this entry. And yet, shortly after the thunder, we’re back to sun. Ahh, Yukon weather…wait five minutes and see what you get.
Thunder and rain aside, we are heading into summer. The grass is greening up, the trees are sharing pollen with us (whether we want them to or not), and this Saturday is Planting Day. Yes, it’s a bit later than previous years, but our Gardener, Ryan, wanted to give the plantlings their best shot at not getting frost-bitten.
As in previous years, volunteers for Planting Day meet at the Town Office parking lot at 10:00am on Saturday June 15. Bring your own gloves and planting equipment if you have them, as selection is limited. Be prepared for all weather conditions, as we will be planting rain or shine ^_^
Also on the 15th, the Anvil Range Arts Society is having a Fun Festival at the Gallery, starting at 1:00pm. They will be running workshops and demos between 1:00-5:00pm, with a free barbecue at 5:30!
Sunday the 16th is Father’s Day, and it’s also the Plant Sale. The Sale starts at 10:00am at the Greenhouse behind the Public Works building on McQuesten Road.
Have a great week, everybody!

Spring has sprung (almost 100% certain of it this time)

As I’m writing this update, my eyes keep straying to the office window. Not the one overlooking Pumphouse 3 (though it is a particularly fetching shade of blue), but the one overlooking the entrance to the Town Office. There’s a willow* tree between the office and the Church, and it is covered with light green leaves. I’m fairly certain they were just buds on Friday, but over the weekend they burst forth into baby-leaves.
I don’t want to jinx anything, but I feel pretty confident in saying Spring has finally come to Faro. Thank goodness! I don’t know about you, but I was pretty tired of all the snow.
The Interpretive Centre officially opened on the 15th. Sabine and Joseph are over there every day, so pop in to say “Hi” and check out the renovations that were done over the winter.
Our new gardener, Ryan, and our assistant gardener, Dave, are hard at work, getting the plants ready for Town Planting Day, which is scheduled for June 15. Of course, we’re also looking at scheduling Town Clean-up Day, which was postponed from April 27 because of the snow that would not end. Posters will go up around town for both these events, and I’ll update the Town’s Facebook page as well.
The pool opened on May 17, much to the delight of Faroites both young and old. Melanie, our pool coordinator, was teaching Bronze Medallion over the past weekend. We’re very glad to welcome her to Faro, and hope she’s enjoying her time here.
We’re getting close to the end of the school year. Our one lone graduate will be taking the stage very soon, and then we’ll be into summer. We have four student positions posted with Public Works, and one with the Rec Centre – get those resumes in by June 4, students!
So, congratulations to Faro for making it through the winter! Enjoy these quick days of Spring as we hurry toward Summer!
~Erica

Passing the Budget

Hey folks, just a quick reminder that tonight is a special meeting of Council to pass the 2013 Budget. 7:00opm at the Council Chambers - as usual, I will be brewing up a pot of coffee, so if you're interested in being there for this momentous occasion, stop on in!
We're getting closer to this year's Crane & Sheep Festival (May 3 - 5), and things are shaping up quite nicely. We've got the tentative schedule posted on the Events page. Now, if only the weather will co-operate and stop sending snow our way! I'm anticipating a couple of pre-Festival hikes up to the Falls to try to shovel away some of the snow on the north-facing sections.
As always, if you have any comments or questions, drop me a line here or call the office at 994-2728.
Cheers,Erica

Spring has sprung (sort of)

It’s hard to believe, after all the snow that Mother Nature decided to drop on us over the long weekend, but spring is just around the corner. And with spring comes a busy time in the Town Office – namely, Budget Time!
There will be a first and second reading of the budget bylaws at the April 2 Council Meeting, followed by a Public Budget Meeting on April 4 (Thursday) at the Sportsman’s Lounge. Coffee and refreshments will be provided, so please join Council and the CAO to learn all about the 2013 Budget.
Many people in town were surprised by unusually high energy bills in January. Yukon Energy did stop by Faro on March 22 to speak with people who were concerned about their bills.
These high bills highlight the importance of the Community Energy Plan that Faro is working on with the Pembina Institute. If you haven’t already filled in the survey that was mailed out, please do so. The survey takes about 15 minutes to fill out, and there is a chance to win a $100 gift basket from Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters. The survey is also available online at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/faroenergy

Catching up

Well, I'm working my way through the website, updating things and making the place as shiny as possible.
If you have a business in town, and want your information updated, please let me know! I want everyone to be as happy with the new site as I am.
I weeded through two months-worth of spam in our guestbook and comments section - if you are a real person and don't see a comment you made, it's possible that I deleted it. Scrolling through pages of comments offering cheap Ugg boots and designer running shoes took its toll on me. I saved a selection of spam that made me laugh, though, so that's a good thing.
The weather has gone from one extreme to another over the past few days - please be careful if you're out walking, driving, or just trying to stay upright. It is very icy.
That's all for now!

Happy New Year!

Hi folks! I've managed to get all the 2012 Mukluks uploaded (finally!) and the first issue of 2013 is up, too. You can find them all here.
The Whistler Centre for Sustainability is coming up to Faro to work on our brand new OCP/ICSP/Sustainability/Zoning plan. (That is certainly a mouthful, so I'm going to keep referring to it as our OCP update ^_^) They're hoping to have more people fill in the online survey - if you haven't filled it out yet, please take a moment to do so. It will help the team from Whistler and the Town in creating the best plan for Faro's future. Click here for the survey.
Do you notice the days getting longer? Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I think I notice a difference in the evenings.
As always, if you have any questions or concern, drop me an email or give us a call in the office.
Cheers,Erica
