Southeast Public Health reminds residents to protect themselves against diseases spread by mosquitoes and ticks

As we move into cooler fall weather, Southeast Public Health is reminding the public that it is still important to take steps to prevent bites from ticks and mosquitoes to avoid vector-borne diseases including Lyme disease and West Nile virus.

In 2026, the Southeast Public Health region has seen cases of West Nile virus, a disease that is transmitted through bites from infected mosquitoes. Additionally, our region is a high-activity area for blacklegged ticks, which can carry bacteria that cause Lyme disease and anaplasmosis. Although less common, blacklegged ticks can also carry and transmit other disease-causing agents to humans which result in infections such as babesiosis and Powassan virus disease. Lower local temperatures mean less activity from mosquitoes, but ticks can be found at any time of the year when the temperature is above freezing (0°C). The public should continue taking precautions to prevent mosquito and tick bites throughout the fall to protect themselves and their families against vector-borne diseases.

These additional precautions will also help to reduce your risk of vector-borne infection:

Doing a full-body check for ticks after being outdoors or at least once per day and promptly removing any attached ticks.
Using Health Canada approved insect repellents containing DEET or Icariden. When applying repellant, follow the manufacturer’s and be sure to check if the repellent is safe for younger children before applying.
Wearing permethrin treated clothing, as well as light colours, long sleeves and pants, socks, closed footwear, and tucking your pants into your socks.
Showering within two hours of returning indoors to remove loosely attached ticks.
Being mindful that pets may also bring ticks into the home. Talk to your vet about protecting your pets from ticks.
Creating a tick-free zone around your property.
Putting clothes worn outdoors in a dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes to kill any ticks.
Avoiding the outdoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. 
Removing standing water outside your home and covering rain barrels with screen mesh to prevent mosquito breeding. 
Fixing tears in window and door screens that mosquitoes can get through.

Signs and symptoms of Lyme disease include rash (may not be circular or “bull’s eye”), fatigue, muscle pain, headache, fever/chills, stiff neck, and decreased appetite. More serious symptoms can include facial palsy, heart block, meningitis, and arthritis. Most symptoms of Lyme disease usually appear between three and 30 days after a bite from an infected blacklegged tick.

Signs and symptoms of anaplasmosis can include fever/chills, severe headache, muscle aches and pains, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or loss of appetite and typically show within 7 to 21 days from the bite of an infected blacklegged tick.
Signs and symptoms of babesiosis may include fever/chills, sweats, headache, body aches, loss of appetite, nausea, and fatigue within 7 to 30 days from the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Most infections have no symptoms; however, babesiosis may also cause a type of anemia called hemolytic anemia, with symptoms including fatigue, jaundice and dark urine. Other severe symptoms include thrombocytopenia (unusually low number of platelets in the blood) and kidney failure.

Signs and symptoms of Powassan virus disease can include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, extreme weakness, and muscle aches and pains within 7 to 30 days from the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Most infections have no symptoms; however, a person may develop symptoms of severe disease, which includes confusion, loss of co-ordination, difficulty speaking, paralysis, seizures or coma.
Signs and symptoms of West Nile virus include several days of mild flu-like illness with fever, headache and body aches, 2 to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Less than one per cent of infected persons develop more severe disease, including neurological disease that can be fatal. The risk of severe disease is higher for older adults, people who are immunocompromised, and those with high blood pressure.If you experience symptoms of illness after spending time outdoors, visit a health-care provider or a pharmacist for assessment and possibly treatment.

Public Health conducts regular mosquito trapping to test mosquitoes for West Nile virus. The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative also monitors wildlife for evidence of West Nile virus. Residents can report dead birds by visiting their website.

Voter Information Letters (VIL)

Expected to Arrive in the Mail Beginning October 5, 2026

Eligible electors will be receiving a Voter Information Letter (VIL) in the mail beginning October 5, 2026. Please keep this letter in a safe spot. You need it to vote!

The Voter Information Letter contains all information required for you to cast your vote by Internet or Telephone from October 19, 2026 at 10:00 AM to Monday, October 26, 2026 at 8:00 PM. It also includes a specific elector Personal Identification Number (PIN). Please do not share your PIN.

If you need assistance with voting or require a Voter Information Letter (VIL), please visit the Town Hall Council Chambers, 30 King Street East, Gananoque, during the following dates and times:

Monday, October 19 – 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Tuesday, October 20 to Friday, October 23 – 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Saturday, October 24 and Sunday October 25 – 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Monday, October 26 – 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM

Should you require a VIL, please bring Identification with you. Accepted Voter Identification, as legislated under the Municipal Elections Act O. Reg. 304/13.

Introducing the Sector Grant Stream

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is introducing Sector grants, a new funding stream designed to strengthen the capacity and resilience of Ontario’s non-profit sector.

Project objectives

Grants support projects that respond to shared needs and emerging opportunities across the sector. Funded projects will help applicants achieve one of the following objectives for Sector grants:

Create or adapt tools and approaches that will strengthen the capacity of the non-profit sector to respond to changing community needs or opportunities.
Improve how data is collected, shared and used to build capacity across the non-profit sector.
Build understanding of diverse and non-traditional funding and strengthen the non-profit sector’s capacity to access it.

Eligible applicants

Organizations must be non-profits with a demonstrated mandate, presence, and established reputation for supporting Ontario’s non-profit sector.

Organizations that solely deliver direct programs and services in their communities are not eligible.

Amount awarded and grant term

From $50,000 to $300,000 a year, for 1, 2 or 3 years.

Application period

The Sector grant application is completed in two steps:

The first step involves submitting the Organization Information and high-level Project Information.
- Step 1: September 23 to October 14, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET.
The second step, for applicants whose projects meet requirements, builds on the information provided in Step 1 and requires more in-depth project details.
- Step 2: October 15 to December 2, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET.

The Judith Scott McLean Memorial Forest

The Judith Scott McLean Memorial Forest property is now recognized as a protected and conserved area in the Canadian Protected and Conserved Areas Database(CPCAD).

The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) was able to include this area in their submission to the CPCAD at the end of November 2025. It now counts towards the 11.2% of Ontario that is recognized as protected.

Background on the Judith Scott McLean Memorial Forest Property

In September 2023, the Town of Gananoque was the recipient of a 35-acre gift of land from the McLean Family. This managed forest located at the east end of Town, south of the commercial area abuts the St. Lawrence River to the north and has historically been enjoyed as part of the Town’s trail system. The lands will be formally named the "Judith McLean Woods" in honour of Judith Scott McLean. A plaque has been erected with the following wording as requested by the family:

"Judith Scott McLean Memorial Forest
Ivan and Marguerite Scott purchased this land as a working farm from the Dempster family in 1950. Their daughter Judy inherited the farm in 1981. Judy's goal was to preserve a habitat for native plants and animals. In her memory, Judy's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are proud to donate this property in perpetuity to the Town of Gananoque. Our hope is that the residents of Gananoque and its visitors will respect and enjoy the natural beauty of this property as much as Judy did. Please, respectfully enjoy the trails, animals, plants and lovely view of the mighty St. Lawrence River from "Turtle Rock".

Located at 10 King St. East is open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily. Public Washrooms are available.

Rest in Peace Roger Gipson

Please be advised that the Town will half-mast its Flag from Tuesday, July 28, 2026 to Wednesday, July 29, 2026, to recognize the passing of Roger Gipson (October 29, 1953 to July 25, 2026). Mr. Gipson served on the Town of Gananoque’s Council, as Councillor, from 1989 to 1994, and; 2001 to 2006.

Our sincere condolences go out to the Gipson family.
