MDC MP Meki Makuyana gets 18 months jail term

A member of parliament for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDc) was sentenced to 18 months in prison, six of them suspended on Thursday after conviction on charges that he committed violence in the post-election period of 2008.

The MP for the Chipinge South constituency of Manicaland province in the House of Assembly Meki Makuyana, is the fourt MP from the MDC to be convicted and sentenced this year.

According to VOA News;

Mutare West MP Shuah Mudiwa was recently handed a seven year sentence for kidnapping.

Chipinge East member Mathias Mlambo got 10 months for committing public violence, and lawmaker Lynette Karenyi of Chimanimani West was found guilty of electoral fraud.

Karenyi, Mudiwa and Mlambo have appealed their convictions, and lawyers for Makuyana are also filing an appeal. The MDC issued a statement calling all the charges “trumped up.”

MDC Manicaland spokesman Pishai Muchauraya told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that such convictions reflect an attempt by the former ruling ZANU-PF party and loyalists in the judiciary to whittle down the MDC's House majority.

Is Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF party committed to this government of national unity? What is the Tsvangirai and the MDC doing about these arrests? Why is it that Zanu PF MPs are not being send to jail? Is there one law for the majority and another for Zanu PF members?

Benjani Mwaruwari to re-join Pompey?

Zimbabwe football captain Benjani Mwaruwari says he would relish the chance to return to Portsmouth. The Zimbabwe international has struggled to make an impact at Manchester City, mainly due to injuries. Recent reports have also linked him with a move to Stoke City. However Benjani has suggested that he may prefer to return to Portsmouth if City decide to sell him.

"I have good memories and I have a special relationship with the Portsmouth supporters," he said in The News.

"I left on a good note and I have nothing but good feelings about them, that's for sure.

"I'd love to play for them again, but at the moment I'm contracted to Manchester City.

"I have a job to do here until I'm told anything else.

"There is a lot of talk about my future, but at the moment I'm still a Manchester City player.

"Obviously there is always speculation in football, though. I am happy to stay unless the club declare they do not want me anymore.

"In football, you never know what is around the corner."

Moving from Manchester City will probably be in the best interest of Benjani. With the mega bucks at City and big name stars set to come in, his opportunities will be very limited next season. I wish him all the best in the coming season, hope he will get the opportunity to show his talent.

Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is speaking to ‘African Voices’ on CNN this weekend - http://edition.cnn.com/CNNI/Programs/africanvoices/ African Voices airs again today Sunday June 28th at 19.00CAT for those in Zimbabwe and (1800GMT). Tsvangirai talks about his childhood in a small village and eight brothers and sisters, and what inspired his political consciousness. He describes the hard work in the mine and with the trade unions, to the romance of love at first sight when he met his wife, Susan.

Tsvangirai discusses his early political career, his subsequent disillusionment with ZANU PF in the ‘80s, from thinking of Robert Mugabe as his hero, and the shock at the transformation and deterioration of his leadership. He speaks about representing the real working classes through his party the MDC, keeping the faith through the years, and the circumstances that led to the Unity Government.

Response to the booing and hackling of Prime Minister Tsvangirai in London

Here is a response by one of the readers of Townshipvibes in the post To Boo or not to Boo?
Just to comment on the booing of the PM in London.

As one of those on the meeting (but did not boo the PM), l sympathised with those booing because, like me, people expected the PM to give an honest and detailed update of the current situation in the country. What impediments, if any, is the MDC facing in trying to functionalise the tripartite arrangement? Its in the public domain that the MDC is seeking recourse of SADCC on issues of disagreement with ZANU PF (e.g the Gono, etc issues). What are the implications of these referrals on progressive engagement of the tripartite phenomenon?

Why are MDC MPs (not ZANU PF) being heckled before the courts at a time when mutual trust should be prevailing? For goodness' sake, why is MDC (with the majority of Legislators in parliament) sitting on the fence whilst ZANU PF thugs continue to evade commercial farms and kill the backbone of our economy? Is the PM myopic enough to see what these acts of none governance and total disregard to the rule of law translate in the minds of those in the diaspora.

Is he aware we are living in a world where even Gordon Brown or Barrack Obama can be told off or their policies openly and publicly criticised without victimisation, etc.

Unfortunately the diaspora has widened people's horizons to the extent they will expect assurances in basic freedom, economic recovery, human rights for everyone and mostly, to be treated with dignity and respect by leaders and the institutions they control, among others. How does the PM think the diaspora will take it if we read that some stupid Ex-combatants are declaring (not negotiating) that Gono will stay as Reserve Bank Governor and that land invasions will continue unabated, not to mention Mugabe will never GO!!! Its provided that in18 months' time, constitutional reforms will be enacted and elections held. Is the PM aware that opposition supporters could still be tortured, killed and/or detained by the same institutions he is not controlling now (Police, CIO, ex-combatants and Solgers).

When this happens and we have returned home enmasse, is MDC going to be there for us when its not even there today for those supporters
currently detained or awaiting fabricated trials (MDC Legislators included)???? l think the diaspora is now wiser enough to seek reason and commitment than emotion. l still wish the PM does not get carried away by the current fiasco and request that he puts opposition principles and determination before power. ZANU PF is still the same old monster that swallowed ZAPU and its own patriotic individuals.

In concluding, l consider that the PM saw it fit to fail to engage his audience (sp); address some of the above, and critically, to remember that he was not addressing a rally in (with due respect to our colleagues back home) in Harare, Bulawayo, etc. He failed to read through the implications of his unfortunate call (for us to return home) 18 months down the road or what message it sends to the British government. If anything, it was indeed the PM who failed to utilise this opportunity to tell it as it is, and leave it open for everyone in the diaspora to make personal decisions on whether to return or not based on honest and unpatriotic update. Leaving the meeting, l concluded participates were right in advising and declaring to the PM "Chinja, maitiro chinja" (Change) or else change will surpass him. All the same, we still love and behold Tsvangirayi and the MDC, don't get us wrong on this one!!!!

Zimbabwe's maize production doubles

Zimbabwe's agricultural production is estimated to have risen significantly this year, compared to the past years. However United nations (UN) says "high food insecurity persists in Zimbabwe in spite of the improvement in agricultural production.

Good rainfall in the past season meant the 2009 production of maize is estimated to have more than doubled to 1.14 million tonnes, a report by the World Food Programme (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organisation said.

"The "King of Pop," who was preparing for a comeback tour, died Thursday at age 50.

Jackson, under apparent cardiac arrest, was taken from his home by paramedics to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where a team of physicians tried to resuscitate him for more than an hour, said Jackson's brother Jermaine. He said the music idol was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. (5:26 p.m. ET)."

Monkey urinates on Zambian President

A monkey urinated on Zambian President Rupiah Banda during a press conference outside his office in Lusaka.

It has been reported President Banda took the unfortunate incident in good humour. 'You have urinated on my jacket,' Mr Banda told the monkey. He also added, 'I will give this monkey for lunch to Mr Sata,' he joked reffering to opposition leader Michael Sata. Will Mr Sata see the funny side of this joke?

To Boo or Not to Boo? Why Zimbabwean exiles in UK booed and heckled Tsvangirai?

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was booed and heckled by Zimbabwean exiles in London for asking them to come home. Would you have booed Mr Tsvangirai if he had asked you to come back home if you had attended the meeting? What was the purpose of this meeting between Mr Tsvangirai and Zimbabweans living in UK?

Did Mr Tsvangirai just decided to have a meeting just to tell people to come back to Zimbabwe? I don't think so!

This was a perfect opportunity for Zimbabwean exiles in Britain to engage in meaningful and constructive dialogue with the Prime Minister. It was an opportunity to be updated, informed and hear for themselves from Mr Tsvangirai why he thought it was right to form a Unity government with Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF.

Was this a missed opportunity lost because of all the fear of having to go back to Zimbabwe? Did Morgan Tsvangirai come to ask Gordon Brown to send Zimbabweans back home like some are suggesting?
But did anyone expect Tsvangirai to say, please don't come back home? He needs all the skilled manpower he can convince to go back to Zimbabwe, to help in re-building the country.

The question is. Is this the right time to be asking people to go back to Zimbabwe? Is the environment now conducive for people to go back home and live a meaningful life. Is the economic environment right for business investment? Is the political situation stable so that investors feel safe to do business in Zimbabwe?

But as Zimbabweans, we should work together and engage in constructive debate and constructive criticisms. Only us Zimbabweans can rebuild Zimbabwe. Other countries and investors will come in and help but we have to show our commitment to improving our own situation.

Think about the future, where will you be in the 2, 5, 10, 15 or 20 years to come?

UK pledges £5 million aid to Zimbabwe

The British government has pledged £5 million aid to Zimbabwe. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown told Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai that there were "great signs of progress" in Zimbabwe but more reforms were needed before Britain would start large-scale development aid to Zimbabwe.

£4 million will go towards food aid, whilst 31 million pounds is for school text books. Gordon Brown also added, "we are prepared to go further in offering more transitional support if the reform programme on the ground gains momentum.

Prime Minister Tsvangirai who is on the final leg of his journey which has taken him to America and other different European countries, sourcing for financial aid for Zimbabwe's transitional government to help in rebuilding the country.

A number of countries have pledged financial support to Zimbabwe and are prepared to give even more aid if the necessary reforms are carried out in the country. It's now up to the politicians in Zimbabwe. Do they want development in the country? Are they prepared to do what's necessary in order to get financial support from the international community.

Zimbabwe must become a democratic country again, one in which there is rule of law. Human rights abuses and victimisation of activists should be stopped. There should be press freedom. People should be provided with well balanced information, if it's in the best interest of the public then it should be provided to them.

It's up to us Zimbabweans to work together and rebuild the country. But, can we do it? I believe we can.

Nhowe Mission Old Students Association - Feedback from the meeting held on 20 June 2009

It was a successful relaunch of Nhowe Mission Old Students Association (NOSA), a job well done to everyone who was involved in the successful relaunch of NOSA. Now that we have passed the most difficult hurdle, it's now time for action. Thank you Mr Secretary General Ephinos Gatsi for your hard work. In this post I will give you an extract from the email I received from Secretary General, Ephinos Gatsi with a list of members given the mandate to run the affairs of Nhowe Old Students Association (NOSA).

Hon Karimanzira, Prof Chetsanga , Dr Guramatunhu were conferred as Patron, Vice Patron and President respectively.

Other key appointments were as follows:

Handling of Finances

- Anybody involved in the handling of finances will go through a police clearance

- All contributions will be transmitted directly to the central account. No other parallel bank accounts will be opened and handled elsewhere other than the main account.

- The President, Chairman , Secretary General , Treasurer and Secretary for legal affairs will be among some of the signatories to ensure high level accountability.

- Contributions and Donations to resume after the bank account has been opened. Any contribution will be receipt and acknowledged to the remitter. The remitter should query if they do not get a receipt for their contribution.

- The Executive will ensure that there shall be a properly constituted Finance Committee before contributions resume.

- It was agreed that the Funds shall be subject to random audits. An audit committee will be put in place before contributions resume.

Other Highlights:

- The President, Dr S Guramatunhu pledged to contribute USD1000 (one thousand dollars ) once the account is opened

- Ambuya Nyandoro who attended the school in 1965 also graced the occasion

- The legal team was tasked to start work on registration of the Association and spearhead the writing of the constitution and other legally relevant documents.

- The council will be meeting this week on Saturday to chart the way forward ( it’s gonna be action and more action!!!!!!)

Prime Minister Tsvangirai to meet Gordon Brown for talks in London

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is set for talks with British PM Gordon Brown and he is expected to ask for financial support from Britain.

PM Tsvangirai is on a tour of America and Europe to lobby for funds to support Zimbabwe's transition government. PM Tsvangarai said it was important for the international community to support the transition government to strengthen democratic reforms.

PM Tsvangirai also said a lot of work is being done to transform the institutions that were used to abuse people, to prepare for fresh elections.
It is very important for all Zimbabweans to work together in an environment where we can trust each other. The problem is the past events in the country make it difficult for us Zimbabweans to trust some of our politicians and politicians do not have trust among themselves. There should be unity of purpose, every Zimbabwean contributing in the re-building of Zimbabwe.

The people who booed and hackled Tsvangirai in London had their reasons for doing so. But, did anyone expect him to say 'please don't come back home'? He would have failed as a Prime Minister because he needs your skills back in Zimbabwe to rebuild the country.

Broadband on the Tube - I love it!

My Internet is one thing I can not live without. At home and on the mobile and at work, I have to get on the Internet. Now the UK government plans to have broadband on the Underground, that will add a bit of life on the Tube.

Tube passengers could also make mobile phone calls while underground under government plans for a digital revolution. Under the plans, the whole of the railway network will have Internet access by 2012. Exciting times ahead for London travellers who like to be connected. What do you think about Internet and mobile phones on the Tube?

Prime Minister Tsvangirai booed and hackled in London

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was jeered when he urged Zimbabweans in London to come home to help rebuild the country.

Tsvangirai was hackled during a speech in London when he said 'Zimbabweans must come home.' People at the meeting chanted 'Mugabe must go.' 'I did not say you must pack your bags and go back tomorrow,' Tsvangirai said. It is too soon to start talking about going back home. What are we going to do there if we all go back today? Where will you get the job? Where is the money to pay the salaries? I think it's too early for all this fantasy talk of packing our bags and going home.

New Dress Code requires staff to wear underwear

It's a real funny world. A new dress code that requires City Hall staff to wear underwear is being enforced.

The City Council of Brooksville, Florida passed the law, 4-1 the only opposition came from the Mayor. The Mayor thinks the law will take away freedom of choice. The city employees must also wear deodorant. Does this mean there are still people who do not wear underwear in America? So, how did they know that some employees are not wearing underwear? But deodorant surely it should not be forced on people. Should be a matter of choice.

Gold production increases at Turk Mine in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe - Gold production at Turk Mine north west of Bulawayo increased by more than 10 percent in May compared to previous months. The mine re-opened early this year and the introduction of new measures by the government to revive the mining sector.

The mine is owned by Japanese based New Dawn Mining Group. The group chief executive Ian Saunders said production at the mine increased by to 916 ounces in May compared to 832 ounces produced in April. The gold produced during this period amounted to US$780 000.

Nhowe Old Student Association (NOSA) update

Saturday 20 June 2009 is the date for the inaugural meeting of Nhowe Old Students Association. At the meeting, members to lead and handle the affairs of the association will be elected. I think the drafting of all the documentation of the Nhowe Old Students Association will be done after this meeting. I will have more information after the meeting on Saturday. People have submitted nominations for the different positions. Some notable names on the lists, include Honourable David Karimanzira for the position of Patron, Professors Chetsanga, vice Patron and Dr S Guramatunhu for President of the association.

More specific information on what the association aims to achieve, I hope to provide in the next posts. But in general, it's former students and friends of Nhowe coming together so we can do something special for our school whilst we also enjoy the fruits of being properly networked. We should be able to transform Nhowe into one of the best schools around.

The current organising secretary, Ephinos Gatsi has also been nominated for the position of secretary general, and other names include Michael Dengwani, Doreen Motsi, Wilson Chinenyanga, Elvis Tarasana, Rebecca Takavadii, Nhamo Dongo, Tawengwa Mangwende.

I understand it's early stages, but I will aim to provide as much information as and when I get it. If you haven't joined already, I think you need to join the Nhowe Old Students Association Group on Facebook.

Nhowe Old Students Association (NOSA) meeting Saturday 20 June 2009

Gender Balance on Nominations

To ensure that both former old boys and girls are adequately represented in the committee, it was proposed that each of the secretarial posts be balanced in terms of gender. To that end, it is recommended that if the substantive secretary position is occupied by a female old student, then the deputy secretary should be a male old student and vice Versa.

Feel free to contribute to the growth of Nhowe Old Students Association and also help make it a success. To those in the diaspora, I think we also have a lot of work to do, just to mobilise each other and make sure we take an active part in this project.

Would you watch an exhibition of Corpse Sex?

Anatomist Dr Gunther von Hagen is to unveil his latest exhibition showing two corpses having sex. The sex couple will be shown at The o2's Body Worlds exhibition in London.

It is said to have caused a furore when it was exhibited in Germany, but von Hagens says he received hundreds of messages urging him to bring the exhibit to London. The man and women are said to have been consenting donors and agreed to be used to 'highlight human reproduction'.

This kind of thing makes me sick, I wouldn't pay to watch anything like that because even the thought of it makes me sick. So why would somebody come up with such an idea?? Would you watch an exhibition like that??? If NO, any reason?

Nhowe Old Students Association (NOSA) Project

Thanks to the guys in Zimbabwe, Ephinos Gatsi and the current team for the ground work they have done so far and the more work they continue doing to make the Nhowe Old Students Association (NOSA) project a success, not forgetting all you guys in the diaspora for playing your part in the project. More publicity is need since we need to get every former Nhowe student involved in this great project.

This was a quick note but I will provide more information as and when I get it. There is a Nhowe Old Students Association meeting taking place in Harare, this coming weekend on the 20th of June. I was going to provide more details but I don't have them off hand, will provide that in a further post.

Every former Nhowe Student's effort is required if we are to make this project a success. I think at the moment more publicity is needed, so let's all let others know about NOSA.

Robbers strike at 2010 World Cup Stadium

Nelson Mandela Bay, one of the stadiums for the 2010 FIFA World Cup was attacked by armed robbers after an international Rugby match.

The robbery took place at the sports bar of the new Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth after a Rugby match between the British and Irish Lions and Southern Kings of South Africa.

Police reports say five robbers were arrested.

Digital Britain - Why should we pay 'broadband tax'?

In it's plans to extend internet access across the country, the UK government is going to charge a £6 a year 'broadband tax' on every household and businesses. The cost of TV licence will also go up, welcome to Digital Britain a nation of over taxed citizens.

'The cable revolution happened without a cable tax, the satelite revolution also happened without a satelite tax' Jeremy Hunt from the Tories said. But these plans come from politicians who claim every peny they spend from us the tax payers. We pay our hard earned cash for MPs to watch adult Dvds and drink expensive wines and all they think of is more tax!! Why should we pay for this broadband tax??

Is it okay for women to breastfeed in public?

First let me say, every baby has got a right to be given food when hungry. Now is it alright for women to breastfeed in public?? If not why is it not right for women to give the baby milk whenever the baby is hungry?

There has been a lot of debate on this issue. Myself I don't see anything wrong, maybe because were I come from women breastfeed in public. So what do you think about breastfeeding in public??

Zimbabwe gets 25 million euros aid from Germany

The Germany government has pledged 25 million euros in aid to Zimbabwe. German chancellor Angela Merkel said German could provide more support if Zimbabwe undertakes more democratic reforms.

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has been touring Europe and the US looking for donor aid. But as more and more aid keeps coming to Zimbabwe, it's up to us Zimbabweans to make sure we use it wisely. Make sure we work hard to rebuild the country. There should be a zero tolerance policy to corruption, and only competent people should be in government.

Project to turn human waste into gas energy

'Poo Power' - A £4.3 million project to turn human waste into gas energy has been launched in Manchester, UK and could be ready by 2011 according to a report in the Metro.

The biogas byproduct of sewage treatment could be enough to power 5 000 homes. United Utilities is said to have secured government funding to provide human waste gas energy to the people of Manchester. Bio-methane can be compressed for use in vehicles or injected in the gas grid. If funding could be secured, this is the type of project that could help in Zimbabwe.
