Master Splinter? I was tempted to ask the homeowners if they were Ninja Turtle fans but decided against it. They probably would have looked at me as if I were crazy. Yeah, I'm not the one with a Ninja Rat in my driveway! (But I totally would be if the wife let me.)

The helmet fires missiles from the side. Looks like I'll be Iron Man for Halloween this year!

These Assemblers are pretty neat with their interchangeable parts. I'll be opening them up and looking at them more closely soon.

I got the Mark 42 and War Machine.

The Micro Muggs are blind packed, I ended up with Maskless Iron Man and Ironless Iron Man, aka Tony Stark. Fun!

Cue 'Ride of the Valkyries'

I pick up classic Fisher-Price Little People and accessories for my daughter from the flea market whenever I find them cheap and in good condition.The Helicopter and Dog came from two separate trips, but each cost me a quarter. The Dog has a yellow collar so I felt he matched the helicopter nicely and makes for a good pilot.

Star Trek Kre-O Blind Bag Minifigures and Codes!

In anticipation of Star Trek: Into Darkness, Hasbro via their Kre-O line has already released multiple building block sets - as well as a series of Blind Bagged minifigures!

I used the 'squeeze method' to find the two I needed: A Klingon and a Gorn (or is it just Gorn? Mr. Gorn perhaps? Maybe Ms. Gorn? I don't know.)

Gorn is pretty impressive. He has the 'Alien' build that makes him a great extraterrestrial minifigure, as well as great custom fodder.

He also has a very cool weapon.

'Bring it on, Captain Jerk!'

Of course I also had to have the Klingon. He has that ubiquitous Klingon weapon that I don't feel like looking up right now, as well as a cool jacket.

He's apparently also wearing a helmet, which may be the new Star Trek's way of bridging the smooth headed Klingons of the original series with the lumpy headed Klingons of TNG.

FIGHT!

Each package has a unique set of two numbers on the back upper right of the package, which leads with '30711' on all of them.

The Klingon was 30711 08 and Gorn was 30711 09. Or maybe it was the other way around, I got the packages mixed up when I opened them. Regardless, you will be able to tell because Gorn has those massive legs, and their weapons are unique too. So you might have to squeeze a little bit, but not too much ;)

Brief Update

Hope everyone enjoyed May the 4th as much as I did. Saw Iron-Man 3 (great end to the trilogy!), went to my LCS for Free Comic Book Day, and watched some Star Wars movies at home into the evening.

I found this Lego Tauntaun last weekend at a flea market for a quarter. I figure the Empire would use them too in cold climates, so I added a Lego Snowtrooper.

Made a blind trade with Chris of Stunt Zombie fame, and his half arrived before I mailed mine (because I'm a parent of a toddler - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

We had previously discussed his Super Powers Robin (who still has the cardback/bubble, which my toddler tried to smash to hell immediately - she's an 'opener' you see) but Chris surprised me and threw in a ton of other goodies from past posts of his, as well as some great new stuff too! The Action League figures are great, especially in light of the upcoming Flashpoint animated movie. I held tight to Batman but allowed my intern to play with the others. Also included are Young Justice Kid Flash and Speedy - now I really need to get a YJ Robin! Plus, Playskool Yoda and Darth Vader, Mega Bloks Venom and movie Captain America, a little green breakdance man (and boombox and 'cardboard' pad), and a very cool early Toy Biz attempt at a superarticulated Spider-Man! The 'jack-in-the-box' and comb belong to my intern.

Speaking of...take it away, 'Vanna!'

'This early Toy Biz Spider-Man from 1990 sports 'multi jointed action poses' and was a pre-cursor to the now famous 'Marvel Legends' line and the current super articulated action figure movement. He has about seventy bazillion points of articulation I think but I can't count so I'm not positive. Back to you, Daddy.'

Attack in the Box Joker

This is the 'Attack in the Box Joker' from the current Mattel in-house Batman action figure line.

When I saw this guy at Target recently I knew I had to have him. His design is pretty far off from your typical Joker, with elements of a prisoner Joker, a para-military Joker, and even Joker from Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker thrown in for good measure.

He could also pass as a good Joker Goon from Batman: Arkham City.

The cartoon on the packaging suggests a prison-type striped shirt, but the toy doesn't have the black striped elements painted. Regardless, like Swamp Raider Killer Croc before him, this Joker appears to be an escaped inmate with the orange pants/shirt and I like the consistency of design between the two.

I assume the purple vest is supposed to be a bullet-proof vest, and of course there's no denying the bullet belt across his shoulder.

I have to admit, a huge component of the appeal of this figure for me and why I had to have him is that he is either A) a reflection of our times or B) a poorly timed design variation that ironically reflects our times. Is art imitating life or vice versa here? Either way, a machine-gun toting urban terrorist Joker is what we got.

The machine-gun in question is pretty cool for a simple accessory. The plastic is bendable but not too soft so you can attach it to Joker's arm easily.

The gun barrel rotates out so the Jack in the Box can stand on it's own or reveal it's hidden gun barrel. Here's where the only real disappointment comes in...

The end of the barrel looks like it's missing a piece. Based on the packaging's cartoon, there should be multiple barrels at the end. Did Mattel try to white-wash the design and make it less realistic-gun-like or did they cut costs and remove a single component? We may never know, but my guess is they cut costs.

As for Joker himself, in addition to the overall design aesthetic, there are a couple of fun little design elements that really make him pop.

For instance, Joker's vest includes a dead/frowny face on the back.

And his guano-kickers have smile-tipped toes!

And last but not least, I really like the buzz cut. I can imagine Joker being pretty pissed about having to get a prison issue haircut, and letting that raw testosterone driven anger come out in his personality for a little while until it grows out. He gets all Rambo/GI Joker until his beloved locks grow back. Not sure what that ninja star logo is supposed to represent, maybe a mean, sharp, bad-ass flower? A MANLY flower! That's it!

See, that's the thing about this Joker, as much as he is non-canon, he's pretty canon if you think about how the Joker might approach a certain situation. I can imagine him doing some bad Stallone, Schwarzenneger and Van Damme impressions during whatever military strike he's making which necessitated this silly garb in the first place.

Also, this figure would make the perfect base to customize the 'Return of the Joker' version of our favorite Clown Prince of Crime.

I like the design of the Rockabilly Joker that is also a part of this line, but prefer this version since he lacks the action feature of that other Joker. Although a head swap, giving this Joker the Elvis-do, might look pretty neat!

Man bursts into tears.

Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci."

Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains."

I swung into Toys R Us only to find another extremely picked over box of Lego Minifigures Series 10. Happily I was able to find the sad clown himself...Pagliacci!

Now other than the super rare gold minifigure, I have all the ones I need from this series. In the mean time Pagliacci will be joining Lego Harley Quinn's goon gang!

Harley Qwednesday :: Injustice Harley Quinn Classic Costume 'Skin' DLC

Just revealed on the Injustice Gods Among Us Facebook Page is this DLC of Harley Quinn's classic costume!

I'm waiting for the game to have been out a while so I can get it on sale/used - I'm just not that big a gamer to need most games on opening day unless it's an 'Arkham' title - but when I do get it I'll be downloading this Harley Quinn costume that day! None other compare to the classic!

I See a Red Tornado and I Want It Painted Black Manta

I've owned both the Brave and the Bold Red Tornado and Black Manta for years, and although I've already posted about Black Manta, I have never posted about Red Tornado until now.

I believe Red Tornado came to my via Jboy of Revenge From the Cosmic Ark fame. He sent him along with a ton of other goodies years ago, and I just never got around to making a post about him. Thanks Jboy!

I found Black Manta at the flea market years ago. He's one of the nicest B and the B figures because there's absolutely zero parts re-use. His toy design is exactly like his toon design, and a neat design it is.

Every piece is unique to Black Manta on this action figure, or at least they all started that way. Not sure if they later re-used any of these pieces for other figures.

Both of these figures were boxed up for a couple years, and each suffered from that weird dusting that Mattel plastic often gets. I tried to wipe as much of it off as I could, but sometimes it's tough to get in the little detail areas. Anyways, back to old Reddy:

Red Tornado is a good action figure, but his characterization on the Brave and the Bold cartoon was never really my favorite. He's not a figure I would have searched out on my own when the line was new, which is why I am glad he was given to me. I felt the same way about the Atom at the time, and sort of wish I had him now. So I am sure I would regret not having Red Tornado if I didn't own him today. Funny how that goes, isn't it?

His weapon of course attaches to all those hex holes he and his B and the B pals have. It can be spun like a top or flung like a disc, so it's cool and character relevant. Of course I do like his cloth cape too. Cloth capes rule!

RT does have a neat and colorful aesthetic, and that face is very robotic and emotionless.

Like Colin over at Super Duper Toy Box, I have been feeling nostalgic for The Brave and the Bold recently. I'm glad I picked up many of the best when they were new, and have been lucky enough to find a few more with relative ease on the secondary market. I even picked up another half season of the show on DVD and am remembering just how awesome the cartoon was. I sure do wish it had been more successful and had lasted longer, not to mention wishing that it had spawned more unique characters in the toyline! Every time a new or different character pops on screen I think 'He/She would make a GREAT action figure!'

Alas, it was not meant to be.

Brave and the Bold Stealth Strike Riddler

Another tough to find villain has joined my Batman: Brave and the Bold ranks: This time in the form of The Riddler!

The Riddler came out when the line was ~~dying~~ dead as part of the final 'Stealth Strike' assortment. He was the only non-repaint-Batman of that wave, so he was short packed and sold out relatively quick. I did see him on the shelves once or twice but didn't bite, and I regretted that decision until I was finally able to find a mint specimen (sans accessory) for super cheap on eBay!

His design is straightforward and simple like all the Brave and the bold figures, and he of course has those crazy hex holes on his arms, legs and back, but I just love his head sculpt! Whatta widow's peak!

The Riddler makes a great addition to my growing Brave and the Bold rogues gallery, which also includes Despero, Gorilla Grodd, Black Manta, Metallo, and Solomon Grundy!

League of Extraordinary Bloggers :: Plastic Fantastic!

Editor's Note: I am going to cheat a little and update this post as a League of Extraordinary Bloggers post, since the new assignment is 'Comic Books' and I just posted this a few days beforehand. So there!

I have already mentioned my recent score of Plastic Man Archives Volume 1 for the incredible price of $20. The used bookstore where I discovered it had all eight volumes, but at first I was content with just nabbing Volume 1 - a book I have wanted for years.

Well, yesterday I returned and nabbed Volume 2, also for the low low price of $20.

Part of the DC Archive Editions, Plastic Man Volume 1 came out in 1998 and Volume 2 in 2000. Neither has been reprinted or gone to paperback, so if you want to own a comprehensive look at the early adventures of Plastic Man, these are really your only option (short of finding the actual original comics themselves!)

Volume 1 re-prints Plastic Man's appearances in Police Comics #1-20 and Volume 2 re-prints his appearances in Plastic-Man #1 and Police Comics #21-30.

I love Plastic Man, and am fascinated by his creator Jack Cole, so each of these volumes is a gem in my collection.

Volume 1 contains the first ever appearance of Plastic Man (natch) as well as his partner in comedy Woozy Winks.

Volume 1 also contains this hilarious sequence where Plastic Man is captured by a gang of female mobsters; their plan? Mold Plas into the likeness of gangster Eel O'Brien, (his own alter ego, unbeknownst to the gang of girl no-goodnicks), force-feed him some 'reefers' and send him off on a mad rampage through the city in an attempt to frame him!

'Whee!! I'm a Killer!!' BAM! BAM! BAM!

Hahaha it just doesn't get any better than this!

I'm absolutely LOVING these early Plastic Man adventures. Having scored both volume 1 and 2 so much lower than they generally go for on the secondary market just makes them all the sweeter!

Two Leatherheads are Better Than One

'And who you think you be, son, if'n I may be so bold to ask? Speak up! Wassamattah, boy, is your mouth glued shut?'

This feller here is the newest incarnation of the mutant Alligator Leatherhead. He's pretty neat, all things considered. I really like the character design, it makes for a nice all purpose mutant alligator.

That said, he lacks the personality of design that the original Leatherhead has. New Leatherhead could have used a leather motorcycle jacket or a hat or something to distinguish him a little further from a generic mutant gator.

He comes with no accessories, which is a disappointment considering how accessory laden most TMNT figures have been thus far. He really should have some sort of sewer related weaponry! As the character develops in the cartoon, it wouldn't surprise me if he gets more depth and that is carried through in his design - but for now, we get a mutated alligator just learning to make his way in the world.

He has ball swivel articulation in his hips and shoulders but that's it for his appendages - well, his tail rotates but that's not of much use. His head also rotates. Funny to think that the original Leatherhead action figure has more articulation - new Leatherhead could have used a hinged jaw!

Like with TMNT's previous release 'Dogpound' paint apps are a bit spartan. Which is ok since he's an alligator, but a better wash over his top/back would have been nice instead of the speckled white paint they did apply. He's smaller in scale than his cartoon appearance, but that doesn't bother me too much, although if Mattel can make a humongous Killer Croc for around the same price point, Playmates could have done a little better...

'Lissen here, boy, you needs to get y'self some trousers! T'aint right, goin' round with yer gatorbits in the breeze like 'at. People'll start talkin!'

'Okay okay, I'll cover my crockadoodle noodle. Hey tinjaws, think you could point me in the direction of the nearest Montgomery Wards?'

I do recommend Leatherhead for TMNT fans and for others who just like mutant alligators (and who doesn't? Communists, that's who!) He's a neat action figure for your display and of course a solid toy for kids to enjoy too, I gua-ron-tee!

Catwoman Purrrsday :: Julie Newmar Catwoman Action Figure Revealed!

Action Figure Insiders got the scoop this week on Mattel's 6" 1966 Batman Classic TV show Julie Newmar Catwoman action figure. Check out the pics below!

This is the pre-articulation 'paint master' phase of design, so the actual figure will have all the same articulation as the rest of the series.

I don't know, the face looks too 'Barbie' to me. But still a beautiful figure and I'm sure she'll be a hard one to pass up!

Harley Qwednesday :: more NSFR Harley Quinn Cosplay

Veidt.com recently posted three new cosplay photoshoots of model Kat as New52 inspired Harley Quinn!

For the most part, they are NSFR (Not Safe for Robin), but I tried to control myself when choosing the a few to highlight here on Toyriffic.

Your mileage may vary, however, so make sure you know who is looking over your shoulder!

Part 1 is relatively SFR, Part 2 starts crossing the line and Part 3 is definitely NSFR , but check them all out anyways.

The Fox returns to comics!

The Fox is coming back!

Hot on the heels of the successful New Crusaders title, Archie's Red Circle imprint will be releasing an all new Fox comic later this year by Dean Haspiel and Mark Waid!

The Fox is my favorite of all the Mighty Crusaders characters, and his absence in The New Crusaders really had me bummed. I'm glad to know now that his lack of appearance there meant he was being primed for his own title! I am fortunate to own his action figure from the 80s toyline and I'm excited to be able to read some new adventures starring the character soon!

Lego Minifigures Series 10 :: With Bump Codes

Moseyed into Toys R Us to find the last bits of a Minifigures Series 10 shipment tonight! They were super picked over, but I was fortunate enough to use the tried and true 'squeeze method' to find my 'must haves' for this wave. I went ahead and documented the bump codes too, for those of you who use that method of discovery:

First up, Bee Girl. This gal is super cute, and since my wife is related to the lead singer of Blind Melon, I figured this one was one I needed to own. Her 'bump code' is below:

If you squeeze, feel for those wings. Next up...Medusa!

Medusa is a true gem in this wave. She's super easy to find via the squeeze method because she has a massive snake lower body, which is epic. She also has two faces...

...and that snake-hair is just too much! I love this minifigure! If you squeeze, feel for that snake body, you can't miss it. Medusa's bump codes are as follows:

I just had to have Xena: Warrior Princess!

This minifigure is simple but beautiful in her non-copyright but damn sure Xena inspired motif. What's not to love?

Even though the assortment I found was very well picked over, I was lucky to find the big three.

Once again, Medusa is the stand-out here. Xena is a must have for anyone who was a fan of the show back in the nineties, and of course Bee Girl is just too cute for words!

He's Got a Mug Like a Dick Tracy Character!

A coffee mug, see...myeah!

More Dick Tracy fun!

I've had this coffee mug since the Disney movie was released in 1990. It was made by Applause and probably came from Hallmark or something. It's useless as a coffee mug, because it has functional wheels! A cute gimmick, but I don't need my coffee on wheels, especially since I live in California. Earthquakes and rolling coffee mugs don't mix.

So instead I use it to hold pens and pencils. And ironically it has never once rolled away and spilled. Sigh.

I never realized it until now, but with a little minor modification this could easily be made into a Clyde Barrow getaway car mug! Cool!

Despero :: Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Another Brave and the Bold villain joins the ranks as Despero arrives at Toyriffic Headquarters!

Released in a two pack with a black/grey Batman and never appearing anywhere near me when at retail, this Despero finally comes to my collection via a trade with Retro Toy Safari. Thanks LeAnne!

He also originally came with a sword accessory, but he never wielded a sword in the cartoon that I recall, and a sword isn't a canon weapon for Despero, so I am fine with not having it. Especially since I never thought I'd gain a Brave and the Bold Despero to begin with!

Despero is a great figure - he's unique to the line in that he has a plastic cape, his belt is unique to him and not just painted on, and his three-eyed head sculpt is top notch and the perfect match to his appearance on the episode 'The Eye of Despero!'

My intern was a little unsure of this intergalactic despot at first...

...but he proved harmless in the end.

I also recently gained a new Brave and the Bold Batman! This one has a little play wear and no accessories, but I like the red trim. Not sure what version this Batman was originally marketed as. EDIT: He was part of the Cyber-Tank set that also included a Blue Beetle action figure - thanks Colin!

But he's a cool looking Brave and the Bold Batman, and that's all that matters to me!

Based on the 1990 film and made by Playmates, the Dick Tracy toyline was one I gladly skipped at the time. I'm a fan of Dick Tracy and I enjoyed the movie, but the toys never appealed to me. But when the chance to get three of them for next to nothing arose yesterday I figured 'what the hell.'

This one is Lips Manlis, who was portrayed in the movie by Paul Sorvino. It's too bad I don't have his accessories, apparently Lips came with a set of concrete shoes! I suppose I could fashion a set out of clay or something though. If I had a fish tank, he'd make the perfect decoration sunk to the bottom with his cement overshoes!

This unfortunate looking chap here is Mumbles, who was played by Dustin Hoffman. Until they make a Tootsie action figure, this is probably the only Dustin Hoffman toy anyone will ever own and no one will want. Poor Mumbles!

And polishing off the criminal trifecta is The Rodent, who was played in the film by Neil Summers. Dig that mouse trap belt buckle!

These guys are beyond ridiculous looking, yet having them now I can sort of see the appeal. They would make excellent OG TMNT foes since they are essentially engineered exactly the same. They would also make great Batman villains if there was a Batman line they fit into, but I can't think of one that matches this scale/cartoony stature. In the meantime they fill a slot in my collection I never knew needed filling, and will run amok in toy town until I can track down a Dick Tracy to keep them in line!
