AT&T Oaks course grow-in process moving ahead smoothly

We hosted a tour of the final finishing holes on the AT&T Oaks course this week for Tony Piazzi and his team from Golf San Antonio, along with some of our PGA TOUR staff to review progress on the future home course of the Valero Texas Open. The golf course is simply looking marvelous. Golf Course Superintendent Tom Lively and his team are working tirelessly to insure the golf course is just right when it opens for play early next year.

Here are a couple of photos from the morning. The top photo is of 17th hole, a short but tricky 385 yard par four. The two bunkers on the hole are huge!!! The bottom photo is of the 10th hole, a slightly downhill 440 yard par four. This hole plays into the prevailing wind and demands pinpoint accuracy on the player's approach shot. A four is a good score here.

Construction Moving Along Quickly on the AT&T Canyons Course

The AT&T Canyons golf course designed by Pete Dye is almost complete. Construction has been moving ahead at a fast pace with completion slated for early July. Grassing is complete on eight holes. To give you an idea of the progress, I have attached a pair of photos below.

The first is a photo of the beautiful green site for the 15th hole, an almost 600 yard five par. The green has almost a negative edge effect from the fairway. The hole could be the most difficult five par on the course.

The second photo is of the third green taken from the left rough just prior to grassing. When playing this dogleg right four par, make sure you take enough club for your approach, you don't want to end up in the pot bunker in front.

A Bird's Eye View

Here is an aerial shot from April of the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa. You can see to the right of the photo is the AT&T Canyons course where construction is expected to be completed in late June. On the bottom left of the photo is the 18th green of the AT&T Oaks course, the future home of the Valero Texas Open. The area behind the resort, between the courses, is the River Bluffs River Experience, a six acre water park. Construction is still on pace for an opening in early 2010. Grassing begins on the AT&T Canyons course

Grassing began this week on the AT&T Canyons course at TPC San Antonio. The course designed by Pete Dye and PGA TOUR Player Consultant Bruce Lietzke is scheduled to be completed at the end of June. When completed the summer, the AT&T Canyons course, along with its sister course the AT&T Oaks course designed by Greg Norman, will combine to create one of the top 36 hole golf venues in the country. Here are a couple of photos taken this morning of the grassing. The first is of the par 3 16th hole and the second is the par 4 17th hole. Enjoy!!

Construction nears completion at TPC San Antonio

With Spring fully in bloom and the year's first major just completed (what an unbelievable tournament!!!), I thought it would be great time to provide you a construction update on work at TPC San Antonio. It is truly an exciting time as construction nears completion. Work on the AT&T Canyons course continues with grassing on several holes beginning very soon. Grassing of the course will be completed by the end of June allowing the course to benefit from a full summer and fall growing season. Here is a look at a couple of holes ready to be grassed on this unbelievable golf course designed by Pete Dye and PGA TOUR Player Consultant Bruce Lietzke.

The AT&T Canyons course is breathtakingly beautiful with fantastic vistas from the majority of the holes. Here is the view from the green of the par 3 8th hole toward the 768 acre nature preserve which borders the north side of the course and a view of the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa from the site of the 12th green.

Construction is complete on this course and our team is currently working through the final punch list preparing the course for grow-in this year as we prepare to open in early 2010.

TPC San Antonio names new General Manager

Twenty-five year golf industry veteran Jimmy Terry has been promoted to General Manager at the PGA TOUR’s TPC San Antonio, a private/resort club now under development in the Texas Hill Country. Terry previously served as Director of Business Development, with responsibilities of helping to spearhead the opening of the club and overseeing membership sales, corporate partnerships and other business opportunities.

“In just seven months as Director of Development at TPC San Antonio, Jimmy has made considerable contributions to club infrastructure, including the conceptualization and launch of the membership program, which is already proving to be very successful,” said John Hugghins, Senior Vice President of TPC Operations for PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties. “Having been born and raised in Texas, Jimmy is particularly knowledgeable about the Texas golf market. We are confident his breadth of experience and expertise in opening and managing high-end private and resort properties will help propel TPC San Antonio to the upper echelon of golf in the state.”

Jim Miller, President of Miller Global Properties, added, “We’ve enjoyed working with Jimmy Terry on this project during the last few months. We are thrilled that he has been appointed to this position. His professionalism, good nature, and ability to work with others will benefit everyone involved in this project.”

Miller Global is the developer of the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa, which will be owned by Miller Global in partnership with Principal Real Estate Partners.

A native of Texas, Terry has extensive experience in the planning, development, construction, opening and management of new facilities, including Falconhead Golf Club in Austin, TX; The Club at Comanche Trace in Kerrville, TX; TPC Tampa Bay; Barton Creek Resort and Country Club in Austin, TX; and The Club at Waterford in Marble Falls, TX. A Class A Member of the PGA of America for 22 years, Terry has been active in the Southern Texas PGA Section, having served as an officer, junior golf committee chairman, tournament chairman and member of the Board of Directors.

Terry earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. He and his wife of 21 years, Rose, have two daughters: Kasey, a sophomore at Texas A&M, and Kaley, a senior at Cedar Park High School.

Scheduled to open in early 2010, TPC San Antonio will feature 36 holes of golf designed by two of the game’s most innovative architects, Pete Dye and Greg Norman. Champions Tour player Bruce Lietzke collaborated with Dye on the design of the AT&T Canyons Course, while PGA TOUR player Sergio Garcia assisted Norman on the design of the AT&T Oaks Course, which will serve as the new home to the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open in 2010. Both layouts are being built with the infrastructure to serve as host venues for TOUR tournaments.

Sunrise at the AT&T Oaks Course

Hello from TPC San Antonio! I took an early morning tour around the AT&T Oaks course designed by Greg Norman last week. The golf course looked great so I thought I would share a few photos of it with you. The first photo is of the third hole, a par 3 measuring 213 yards from the TOUR tees and the next photo is of the the beautiful fourth hole, a 481 yard par 4 from the TOUR tees.

Construction is also moving along smoothly on the AT&T Canyons course designed by Pete Dye with construction scheduled for completion in June. Both courses will be opening in early 2010.

J.W. Marriott Achieves Construction Milestone

On Tuesday January 27, the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa celebrated a construction landmark with a ceremonial "topping off" event. The ceremony was held to commemorate the halfway point in construction of the 1,002 room resort, as well as beginning the one-year countdown to opening the facility. The resort features 140,000 square feet of meeting space, a 26,000 square foot spa, a high-tech sports bar and a $13 million dollar water park. The jewel of the resort will be the TPC San Antonio, which will be home to two world class golf courses designed by World Golf Hall of Fame members, Pete Dye and Greg Norman. The celebratory event was held on site at the resort and featured speeches from Judge Nelson Wolff, David Johnstone of Miller Global, John Pierret of Forestar Real Estate Group, Jimmy Terry of TPC San Antonio and the PGA TOUR, and the newly named General Manager of the Resort, Arthur Coulombe. Approximately 100 officials, dignitaries and well wishers gathered for the event. The culmination of the which featured the inaugural flag raising on top of the resort while the Star Spangled Banner was played, followed by personal guided tours of the resort and TPC Clubhouse.

A New Year, A Second Golf Course to Complete

Happy New Year to you from TPC San Antonio. This coming year looks to be loaded with excitement for our club including the completion of the AT&T Canyons course designed by World Golf Hall of Fame member Pete Dye, along with PGA TOUR Player Consultant Bruce Lietzke. Work is moving ahead quickly on the course with bunker work and sandcapping underway on several holes. Here are a couple of photos of the progress taken today for your enjoyment.

This is a photo taken from the first green looking back to the 16th green in the foreground and the 17th hole in the distance.

This is a photo from near the tee of the 17th hole. This shortish hole requires a downhill tee shot, but an uphill second.

These are fairway bunkers on the right side of #18. The green is located directly over the three white stakes in the center of the photo. You can just make out a small red roller which is on the green. The backdrop is the beautiful JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa.
